Issue 9

CREATING A SAFE COMMUNITY TO PREVENT SUICIDE By: Alex Granados, LSCSW-Therapist It takes the contribution of all in the community to prevent suicides. While the help of a therapist is often necessary and effective, family members and friends are in the best plac to provide immediate support. By having honest and genuine conversations about suicide and mental health, and developing skills to respond, we are preparing ourselves to help and protect someone when they are at their most vulnerable. Suicide ideations are more common than we want to admit, and can occur in anyone. If a person begins to express suicidal thoughts, the fact they are talking can be a healthy factor, as they can began to process the extreme distress they might be experiencing. Just because someone talks about it, that doesn’t make them ‘crazy’, ‘coward’, ‘weak’, or ‘selfish’. As a friend or a family member, one doesn’t need to know how to ‘fix’ their stressors that led the person to consider suicide. Validating in a genuine and sincere way is probably the best key in offering support and help. Be genuine in sharing that you care and assist them to get help. Your role as a family member or friend is critical in that it helps them survive and access further treatment.

IS CUSTOMER FOCUSED we are here to serve our members

HOW TO HELP SOMEONE IN NEED

ENCOURAGES CITIZEN ADVOCACY citizen participation to build a better Dodge City

1) ASK; Ask directly if they are thinking about suicide “Are you thinking about suicide?” Most people with thought of suicide want to talk about it, they don’t want to die, but often feel they are a burden to others. That is what could prevent them from talking about it. The stigma associated with the topic of suicide and mental health is such a barrier in healthy communication. They desperately want and need someone to hear and validate their pain and offer them help to keep safe. Don’t be afraid to ask the question in a direct manner. 2) LISTEN; Be attentive and genuine. Many people express fear of being judged and not accepted, if they talk about their feelings and emotions. This step (Listening) is so crucial. Demonstrate you are willing to be open and listen. That will help a person not feel ashamed. DO NOT go into problem-solving mode and begin offering solutions to their distress. Inviting them to talk about their thoughts is a way to demonstrate your concern. It is not your job to ‘fix’. Just validate by the simple act of listening.

3) SEEK HELP; Make a plan and follow your plan. Talk to the person about how you can work together to get them help. Be honest in telling them that you are concerned and would need to get extra help and support for them. You might need to let them know you can’t keep this a secret and that their safety is much too important. Let them know you will be contacting possibly crisis helpline, mental health center, or emergency services (911). If you are worried about someone, DON’T leave them alone. Remove any means of suicide; which might include drugs, alcohol, access to a car, or weapons. As I’ve stated prior, it takes an entire community of support and helping systems to prevent suicides. In some situations, a person may refuse help and you can’t force them to get help. You can reach out to other members of your community and make them aware of the situation. No one person alone, should ever have that responsibility to themselves. September is National Suicide Awareness month. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK (8255)

SLATER JOINS CASA AS A VOLUNTEER CASA-Children Worth Saving, Inc. would like to welcome Dave Slater, our newest CASA Volunteer. Dave Slater has always been active in volunteering: in the military, as a Jaycee, on church projects, as Lion’s Club President, and the list goes on. That attitude of giving has benefited CASA-Children Worth Saving, Inc. because Dave received his first CASA case in April 2018, and we are grateful to have him on our team! Dave said that it is rewarding to see the impact that CASA can have on families, even the small things can have a positive impact. He finds it disappointing to see the amount of red tape that is involved in making even a small change in someone’s life. His biggest hobby is reading and writing, and he is particularly interested in history. He is married to Gayle and they have four daughters and one son. They’ve always lived in a small town atmosphere and have enjoyed that neighborly, part-of-thecommunity feeling. People describe Dave, and he describes himself as a busy, active person. He says, “The older I get, the more I understand the generativity of my life—my desire to share with others knowledge that can make a difference.”

DODGE CITY BREWING EARNS AWARDS AT COLORADO STATE FAIR Dodge City Brewing is obsessed with making the best beer possible and strive to be their toughest critics. You may remember that they have dumped several batches that they did not think lived up to their standards. Occasionally they like to see how their beers compare to beers of their peers. So they entered several beers in the Craft Beer Competition held at the Colorado State Fair, which is open to craft brewers from all 50 states. Dodge City Brewing is proud that their Fuggley Brown Otter, a Brown (English) Porter, was awarded a bronze medal, and their Coronado Lager, a Vienna Lager was awarded a gold medal. They work hard to make the best beer they can and it feels good to know the BJCP judges at the Colorado State Fair agreed. Dodge City Brewing (DCB) offers craft beer brewed by Larry Cook, an award winning homebrewer and BJCP Certified Beer Judge. Along with the craft beer, DCB has brick-oven pizza made with fresh, house made dough and sauce. There are eight pizzas on the menu. The pizzas are a result of attending pizza school in Staten Island, New York. The owners are excited to bring a brewery to Dodge City, the first in Southwest Kansas.

FT. DODGE OFFICER’S QUARTERS SAVED FOR NOW

JOIN EARLY. SAVE BIG.

The planned destruction of the Officer’s Quarters at Fort Dodge has been extended until the Summer of 2019. This will give the Ford County Historical Society the time to plan for the renovation of the 1868 iconic structure. The noteworthy individuals who have been at the building and Fort among others are General Custer, General Sheridan, General Sherman, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson and Buffalo Bill Cody. The preliminary use for the 150 year old Officers Quarters is for a Reception Center for visitors to the Fort. Ford County Historical Society Kent Stehlik - President www.kansashistory.us

The team decided to affiliate with Carson Wealth to further strengthen their movement in the financial services industry and set a new standard for the client experience. Both firms bring well-respected brands to the partnership and share a deep-held commitment to making the complex simple for investors. Founder, CEO and wealth advisor, Michael David, will maintain active majority ownership of his firm’s six office locations and he, among Dodge City wealth advisors, Ann Frigon and Shannon Benish, will remain the strategic decision-maker for all business decisions and operations, including 28 stakeholders throughout Texas and Kansas. Currently, Pinnacle Financial Group’s six locations collectively manage $1.1 billion in assets, illustrating their long-standing history in serving the ever-evolving needs of their clients. The firm also announced plans to acquire three additional wealth management firms in Texas, Arizona and California, all of which share Pinnacle Financial Group’s core values, focus on personalized service and strategic vision. Along with the affiliation, Pinnacle Financial Group is able to deliver a personalized digital experience that engages clients and articulates the “value of relationship” in a whole new way by providing a holistic view of a client’s financial plan and highlighting major milestones in the client-advisor relationship, while simultaneously holding advisors accountable to their action items and conveying full transparency to the client. “It’s a transformational leap for both our team and our brand,” said Frigon. “Overnight, we’ve elevated our national presence as one of the most recognized financial services brands in the country, while keeping the interests of our clients at the forefront. The real benefit of this move is how it reaffirms the promise we’ve made to our clients and their families, above all else.” “The Pinnacle Financial Group team has known Carson Wealth for decades,” said Ron Carson, CEO and founder of Carson Group. “We couldn’t be more excited to have such a fast-growing firm represent a new chapter of the Carson Wealth brand. We make the complex simple for clients no matter their phase of life and or level of wealth, and we look forward to seeing that meaningful mission expand with this addition.” In addition to being a mainstay in the Barron’s annual list of top wealth management firms, Carson Wealth was recently added to the Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest growing companies, the Forbes list of America’s Top Wealth Advisors and a top-50 firm for Best Places to Work for Financial Advisors by InvestmentNews. ### About Carson Wealth Founded in 1983, Carson Wealth has grown to become a Barron’s Hall of Fame firm, serving clients through holistic financial planning, disciplined investment strategies and proactive, personal service. Carson Wealth Management Group is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, with the mission to be the most trusted for financial advice. Factors included in the rankings: assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, regulatory record, quality of practice and philanthropic work. Investment performance isn't an explicit component because not all advisors have audited results and because performance figures often are influenced more by clients' risk tolerance than by an advisor's investment-picking abilities.
