FFA Alumni & Friends

••

to host silent auction at Expo

•• BY KAREN M. JORGENSEN DCI COUNTY STAFF WRITER

Triton’s FFA Alumni & Friends will be at the Expo with information about the organization and a silent auction to raise money for scholarships. This is the second year for both the auction and the group’s appearance at the Expo, said David Fitzgerald, president of the organization. Last year, he said, the FFA Alumni & Friends raised $2,400 for scholarships for Triton FFA students to continue their education beyond high school. For the auction, he said, the group gets donations from businesses, alumni and other individuals. This year, he said, they have secured a print from artist C.J. Brown and metal work from “Rusty Cowgirls” in Arizona. With two weeks

until the Expo they had more than 40 donations and more were still coming in. As the Expo nears, photos of the items will be placed on the group’s Facebook page. Bidding on items will take place at the Expo. The group currently has about 47 members, Fitzgerald said, and has changed the name from Triton FFA Alumni to Triton FFA Alumni & Supporters. All FFA alumni groups have the new name, he said, because they want to stress that membership is not open only to former FFA members. Anyone interested in agriculture is welcome to join, he said. Even those who are not official members are welcomed, he said, pointing out that Chris Pluto, while not a member of the group, makes sure that activities are placed on the bulletin board at the Legion and his Facebook page. The group has only one regularly scheduled

meeting a year, he said, during the Christmas break. The timing is at Christmas to allow the college students to become involved. They also have had a tailgate party at one of the Triton home football games the past several years and each year help out at the FFA Steak Feed. Members also help out the FFA chapter in other ways. Several members of the group drive school bus for Triton, Fitzgerald said, and even before the official alumni group was formed would volunteer to drive the chapter to events. Others would drive their own vehicles and also act as chaperones. Members of the group will be at the booth throughout the Expo, Fitzgerald said, to help with the silent auction and also to answer any questions about the group and how to become a member.

Annual Dodge Expo to take place March 30

BY ALEX MALM DCI NEWS EDITOR Every spring, there is an annual event that brings hundreds of visitors to Dodge County. That event is known as the Dodge County Expo. That will be the case again this year, with the annual business and organization expo, taking place on Saturday, March 30. Throughout the day visitors will have the chance to connect with and learn about a variety of unique businesses and organizations in Dodge County, as every one there must have a physical location in

Dodge County or be a member of a Dodge County Chamber of Commerce. This year, as in years past, the dodge expo is expected to be a big success. “The show, which is one of the most successful in southeast Minnesota, provides visitors with a sampling of the more than 100 businesses and organizations in Dodge County. More than 3,000 visitors are expected to attend again this year,” the Dodge Expo website stated. Some of the highlighted activities throughout the day include Aztec Dancers, performing in the South Gym three times throughout the day, and a scavenger hunt, with prizes for kids.

For adults, they can win prizes by entering a raffle at the chamber of commerce booth, where they can win prizes that were donated by the local chambers. The event begins at 8 am. with it’s annual $1 continental style breakfast, and ends at 2 p.m., with plenty of opportunities for visitors to learn more about Dodge County businesses and organizations. The expo as always will be held at Triton High School, 813 West Hwy. St., Dodge Center. Visitor are asked to use the Activities Entrance.

Scott Wenz and Michelle Jorgenson of Rochester visit with Maria Theelke Poppler, a psychic, medium and healer.

to promote June

••

community dinner at Expo

••

••

BY KAREN M. JORGENSEN DCI COUNTY STAFF WRITER Dodge Refreshed will be at the Dodge County Expo on March 30 promoting their first Farm to Table community dinner in June. The group received a Small Town Grant from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Fund last fall and is using the part of the grant money for the dinner. Dodge Refreshed is a citizen-driven group formed to help county residents grow in health and wellness. Members of the group will be at the Expo to sell tickets to the dinner and also to inform people about the goals of Dodge Refreshed, says Kristin Cerda, chair of the group and an employee of Dodge County Public Health. There will also be information available from Dodge County Public Health.

The Farm to Table dinner will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, at Coop’s Event Barn in Dodge Center.

The meal will feature locally sourced products, Cerda said, and Omar’s Kitchen will be using preparing the meal. Monte’s in Hayfield will be supplying the beverages, she said. Dodge Refreshed hopes the meal will help support and promote local farmers and businesses. The $65 ticket will include appetizers, salad, main course, dinner rolls, dessert and a glass of wine from a local wintery or beer from a local microbrewery. Nonalcoholic beverages will also be available. A portion of the profits, Cerda said, will go to the North Park project in Dodge Center. The dinner is one of three the group is planning for 2019. On July 20 there will be a Community Bicycle Ride which will begin and end in the Kasson-Mantorville Community Ed parking lot. This event is free. Come fall and Dodge Refreshed is planning a Haunted Hustle 5K and Family Fun Run/ Walk as part of the Mantorville Fall Festival. Proceeds from this event will help provide Kasson-Mantorville and Head Start early

childhood education scholarships. All interested persons are welcome to become involved with Dodge Refreshed. The committee includes individuals from Public Health, Sheriff’s Office, Drug Court, city staffs, people from the Extension Office and county schools and interested citizens. Anyone interested in the organization can check out the booth at the Expo, contact Cerda at Dodge County Public Health, 507-635-6150 or Kristin.cerda@co.dodge. mn.us.

Love

and coffee brought Trail Creek Coffee Roasters to Kasson

BY ALEX MALM DCI NEWS EDITOR 15 years ago Jim and Crystal Whitmarsh were set up on a blind date, where they went out to pizza hut and a coffee shop, Cyberia Cafe, in upper Michigan. Since then, they have had a dream of opening their own coffee shop. That dream soon became a reality. A few years ago, Jim came across an article online about how to roast coffee at home using an air popcorn popper. As they began to share this concept with family and friends they realized they wanted to start business and purchased a one Kg roaster from Mill City Roasters approximately two years ago, Crystal explained. At first, the couple started off

their business small, roasting the coffee in their garage, and selling it to customers on a small scale. “ Our business started under the cottage food exemption, where we roasted in our garage and sold coffee at farmers markets, community events, and direct to the

consumer,” Crystal said. Since then their business has continued to grow, and the couple has now been able to move their business into the old library building in Kasson, something that they are very excited about. “We recently just moved our

roaster into the old library building in Kasson, and obtained our food manufacturing license which will allow us to sell wholesale to grocery stores, coffee shops, churches, and restaurants. Daniel's restaurant in Kasson will be serving our coffee soon,” Crystal explained. For the Whitmarshs they very much enjoy, being able to promote their coffee out in the community, during events like the Dodge Expo. “We enjoy going to events and having people taste our coffee for the first time. The most common responses we get are: "Wow, that's really good coffee" and "I actually don't need creamer with that.” Aside from being able to sell their coffee, the couple also loves having the ability to connect people and support farmers around the world.
