Our magazine is packed with lots of cute cats and dogs parading in the most exquisite Easter attire. They are different, yet all special but they all have one thing in common. They are homeless. All these years we have only featured a dog on our front cover but this Easter we are bold and introducing Fergus our adult ginger boy recently rescued from death row at Blacktown Animal Holding Facility. Notice he still has his impounding tag 505 around his neck when he was photographed. We started rescuing cats and kittens on a small scale this year but in recent weeks we have rescued over 60 cats and kittens (some of which were mothers with newly born/very young kittens) so we thought it appropriate to feature a cat to mark the mammoth increase in cats and kittens DoggieRescue has saved. Michelle has been the lady driving a lot of these rescues and you can read the story on pages 18 & 19. Keeping Fergus company on the cover is Nugget the adorable bunny. We have many rescued bunnies needing to find committed, rabbit loving families.

We are very excited to report that we have been finding wonderful homes for some of our mature dogs. Homer and Phoebe’s adoption by a young couple working full time highlights the fact that there are families out there who have the compassion for a senior dog and understand the intrinsic value they have. A bundle of joy without all the problems! One of our Easter celebrations is that Noodle can see. This 3yo Lowchen X ( pictured page 2 ) was blind when he came from the pound and with successful cataract surgery he can now see! From being a boy who came with vet notes which said: matted and will bite if frightened, Noodle has transformed into a boy as happy as he looks in the picture. Of course such surgery is expensive and we could not contemplate it without supporters like you who recognise that the whole world has now changed for this little dog and his chances of getting a home are much higher. Whilst some of our cats and dogs have recovered from their issues, some will be staying in hospital over Easter. Margaretta a mature Mini Foxy X came from the pound with a mango sized mass on her neck and she is only 4.2kg. It is a tumour on her thyroid. She has commenced some medication which aims to shrink the tumour and give her quality of life. We have yet to meet this beautiful lady and we are all keeping our paws crossed for her.
“ Samson and Delilah cuddling up to me are keeping their paws crossed that someone might be thinking of this gentle, sweet couple. Last Easter came and went but this one might just be special for them.” Monika This Easter our dogs at Doggiewood will be eagerly waiting for you to take them walking or come and chill out and give them a cuddle, some quality human time and a special ‘doggy’ Easter treat. IN THE SPOTLIGHT : We catch up with ex DR doggies Pollux & Castor….
POLLY—THE GALLERINA By Carl Lykert “ While Polly is officially an assistant in our gallery in her mind she really is the MAIN EXHIBITION !” Carl
APRIIL 2015 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE When we spotted Polly on the DoggieRescue website it was love at first sight... Polly is the sweetest, most loving, gentle and affectionate dog, but she also loves to let her inner dog out at the park. As you can see she's also a bit of a looker. It's been wonderful to watch Polly grow from being timid, into the quietly confident dog that she is now, charming the pants off anyone who will give her half the chance. Polly's interests are well catered for between Carl and Robin. With Carl she regularly goes for long early morning walks in all the great parks in the neighbourhood
and she loves accompanying Robin on his Op Shop jaunts where she is welcomed with open arms. She also loves outings in cars, buses and trams, but we've yet to try the ferry, and of course is very happy curled up for hours in the most comfortable spot available. And when we have to go to work Polly comes with us where she loves to greet all the visitors to our gallery. In her mind she really is the main attraction and she receives a lot of attention and is not beyond posing for a little more. To us she truly is a work of art that no money could buy. With all her interests she barely has a moment to herself! Carl & Robin
CASTOR —THE GENTLEMAN By Neil Hopkins and Shannon Terry About a year ago we were in a position to finally adopt a doggie after buying our first home…. A friend had given us a Doggie Rescue flyer so we made an appointment to come and meet a few dogs. We took Castor for a walk and we knew he was the one immediately, not phased by his reputation as being a touch "anti-social". While filling out the paperwork we were surprised he'd been with Doggie Rescue for three years. We wondered if he was just misunderstood. The answer is most definitely yes! Sure, he dislikes some dogs, but others he's perfectly fine with. That can be true of humans too! Castor was friendly with the very first dog we came across on our first walk in the local park. That night we discovered that Castor is obsessed about chasing possums and so can't be left outside after dark...maybe a ploy to spend lots of time inside, not so silly! We gave Castor a cuddle cow during the first week, and it ended up buried in a hole in the garden within hours. After maintaining a rule that he was to stay downstairs, curiosity got the better of him about a week in, and that was that. He now disappears upstairs most evenings for a quiet snooze on a bed. Castor is quite the gentleman, never snatching food and even faking indifference while preparing his food, only to wolf it down when served. Throw a ball and you'll most likely be fetching it yourself. You threw it, you fetch it! And he's no surfer dog, he does not fancy being wet. Baths are his ultimate nightmare. He loves his walks, basking in the morning sun, being chased and chasing.
9
“He's been a great little friend with a wonderfully unique personality. Thanks to Doggie Rescue for keeping him safe and well so that we could eventually find him.” Neil & Shannon Note: Wondering about the resemblance between Polly & Castor? Well, they are brother & sister….

He seems a mix of Chihuahua and Foxy and this gives him his beautifully rounded head, large ears and eyes and agile but robust body. Elmo’s greatest loves are? In true Chihuahua style he loves a belly and chest rub but then in true Foxy style he is then ready to zoom around his day pen playing with his toys (he loves his toys!!!) and other dogs.

What sort of family would suit him? Although he can be a bit shy with men he doesn't know, he has lots of energy and love to give and would suit a family with older kids.

DOGGIERESCUE UNLEASHED AND DANGEROUS COMPILED BY ROLAND BRIEFREL
Why animal welfare and human
suffering are the one issue. In early 2013 the UK’s Chief Medical Officer warned that we are rapidly approaching a time when antibiotics will be largely ineffective. We are at risk of returning to a pre-antibiotic age in which simple infections and minor surgical procedures will become increasingly fatal. Not to mention the resurgence of TB!!
The reason Amazing Grace opens in that way is that it was the very same people who fought for the rights of humans to own property in their own person – that is, the right not to be a slave – who also created animal welfare laws intended to protect animals against the worst excesses of human brutality.
Upon hearing this news I began to think about the plight of future generations. But the announcement also served to remind me of the extent to which the fortunes of humans and non-human animals rise and fall together.
Wilberforce was a remarkable figure. He championed both the abolition of human slavery and animal welfare. Yet while Wilberforce was remarkable because of the historical role he played in alleviating suffering he is not unique in extending compassion to both humans and animals. As the welfare state emerged so too did animal welfare principles. More often than not those who are predisposed towards compassion extend that compassion to all those with the capacity to suffer – both human and non-human.
The movie Amazing Grace tells the true story of the abolition of the human slave trade into Britain. In the opening scene the movie’s protagonist William Wilberforce stops his horse and cart, disembarks, and reprimands a fellow-traveller who is beating his collapsed horse. Empathy towards horses, especially urban working horses, was fundamental to the establishment of the UK’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in 1824. To this day, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) uses as its seal the image of an angel intervening on behalf of a downed cart-horse who is being beaten with a rod.
Despite the shared history many contemporary commentators do not make the link. The western concept and practice of human welfare and human rights has progressed steadily from its humble beginning in Victorian England. The same cannot be said of animal welfare or animal rights. Sadly, the notion that animals might have inherent rights remains little more than an abstract notion agreed upon by a very small number of people.
APRIL 2015 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE
13
Contemporary animal welfare laws are virtually structurally indistinguishable from Britain’s first animal welfare act of 1822. Yet despite the historical deviation it nonetheless remains the case that the well-being of humans and animals are inextricably linked. One of the most important causes of antibiotic resistance is that antibiotics are routinely fed to animals raised under intensive conditions – commonly referred to as factory farming. Some 500 million animals are raised for food in factory farms in Australia each year. 58 billion land animals are slaughtered each year in the US. In the UK alone, factory farmed animals are fed between 350-400 tonnes of antibiotics annually. More than half of all antibiotics produced are fed to animals. Antibiotics are not added to animal feed for therapeutic reasons; that is, to treat them when they are ill. Rather, they are fed to animals routinely merely to keep them alive under extraordinarily cramped conditions. In that sense the looming antibiotic resistance crisis serves as a timely reminder that we - humans and animals are in this together. We feed antibiotics to animals to keep them alive under conditions in which many would otherwise be dead. By doing so we are creating a future in which humans will die from infections that are currently treatable. When humans suffer animals suffer by their side. And vice versa.
Roland Briefrel is an educator and an animal welfare advocate who is not hesitant to speak out about topics for animals who have no voice of their own. He is a long time supporter of Doggie Rescue. The number of animals exported live out of Australia will increase as Australia prepares to enter into a A$1 billion free trade agreement with China. Agriculture minister Barnaby Joyce has claimed up to a million Australian cattle may in the future be exported each year. The issue of live animal exports has been a divisive political issue for at least the thirty years I have been monitoring it. Passions reached boiling point when former Prime Minister Gillard temporarily suspended the trade following a Four Corners exposĂŠ based on footage gathered by Lyn White and her team at Animals Australia. Cartoons by Ryley Miller
14
APRIL 2015 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE
Since then, the trade has re-commenced. The former Labor Government introduced a live export tracking system called the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS); Lyn White has been awarded an Order or Australia; and under the Abbott government live animal exports have expanded, including into China as a new market. Meanwhile, the community appears not to have changed its mind that live animal exports are cruel even though a serious question mark hangs over the government’s ability to police, and enforce, its own rules under the assurance system. In my view the deal with China is likely to increase the suffering of Australian cattle because unlike Australia, China has no comprehensive animal welfare law. On March 1 2010, a draft of China’s first animal welfare law, called the Animal Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China, was submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. The Standing Committee is a de facto legislative authority with considerable political power. That draft law received quite vocal opposition from sections of the community and some members of China’s ruling elite. In particular, a prohibition on the slaughter of dogs for meat (for human consumption) was controversial. As a result of that opposition, three months later on 10 June 2010, a second, more watered -down version of the original draft law was presented to the same Standing Committee.
shown any sign of progressing through the Chinese political process and neither is likely to become law anytime soon. The world’s first modern animal welfare law was introduced in the UK in 1822. That law was enacted following more than two decades of legislative advocacy and followed several earlier, failed attempts, at getting similar laws through parliament. The law that was eventually enacted in 1822 was a political compromise and contained only a small proportion of the provisions included in the unsuccessful bills. If the UK experience is anything to go by it could be many decades before China has an animal welfare law, and even then it is likely to be extremely weak. Of course Australia was not exporting cattle to the UK in 1822, yet it appears that we will soon be sending our animals to China. While Australian animals who find themselves in China will not have to face the horrors of ritual slaughter, as they do in the Middle East, they will nonetheless face the possibility of being killed by people who have minimal skill, little-to-no training and who may be working in very basic conditions. And as we have seen in the Middle East, not all exported Australian animals make it to a slaughterhouse. Yet, even if Australian animals do find themselves in the most modern Chinese slaughterhouse they will die in a country with zero rules prohibiting animal cruelty. If we think prohibitions against cruelty serve a purpose, this should be a troubling scenario.
The second law, called the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Law of the People’s Republic of China, contains markedly fewer prohibitions against cruelty to animals and permits the slaughter of dogs as meat. An examination of both draft laws reveals that whereas the first proposed law had 53 clauses relating to animals raised for economic purposes, the second has only 29.
Strict vegetarians of course would disagree with the basic premise of this, as they are not for killing cows. But if I was an Australian cow, and I was to be killed, I would prefer to be killed in Australia than to take my chances in China. I do not think China is a good place for cows, particularly Australian cattle.
However, this may be a moot point as in the time since being submitted for consideration, neither law has
Australian animal welfare laws are far from perfect, but at least they exist!!

EASTER WISHES 2013 Ian with Piper: My Easter wish for Piper and Penny is that they find a loving home together, not only for Easter, but FOREVER! They are both great little dogs and really deserve the best… Olivia with Penny: My Easter wish for Piper and Penny is that they find a ‘furever’ home together, where the Easter Bunny will always know how to find them. They are a pair of sweet little girls! It was ironic that these captions from Ian & Olivia appeared with the photo above in our Easter Edition 2013 of DR Magazine....
ADOPTING PENNY & PIPER CHANGED OUR LIVES FOREVER By Ian Adams It was a very warm Saturday morning as Olivia and I left home to come up to DoggieRescue for a day of dog walking. We had toyed with the idea of adopting a dog, but as we both work full time we didn't think it would be fair to leave a dog by itself all day. We arrived at the shelter to be told it was too hot for dog walking. We totally understood, but were slightly disappointed. One of the other volunteers suggested that we spent time with dogs who were shy, withdrawn and who didn't get out much. This was our first encounter with Penny and Piper. I bent down to pick up Piper and to my horror, she wet herself. I couldn't believe she was that scared. Penny wasn't keen on being picked up either. She'd struggle and wriggle so much. But we enjoyed our time with them as you can see in the Easter picture above taken that day. We were asked to give our ‘Easter Wishes’ for them, which we did not knowing we would actually make them come true!
A few weeks later we set off for Doggie Rescue again. When we arrived it was pouring with rain. It was on for the day. Walking again was cancelled. Once again a volunteer suggested 'cuddle time' with the small dogs. One volunteer said that we had a soft spot for Penny and Piper and we should have them again. We were delighted to get them. It was cold and they had little knitted jumpers on. So cute. Another great day. We had decided to adopt them both as soon as we could. We'd gone from not having a dog, to adopting two. Best decision ever. Penny wouldn't walk 5 metres without giving up. Piper was very jumpy and easily startled. They both hated the vacuum cleaner. They were both so shy and timid. After having them home for a few weeks we started to introduce new things to them. Instead of them having

harnesses on when going for walks, we tried them on pretty leads and pretty collars. All of a sudden Penny's walks were getting longer and Piper was becoming more settled and relaxed. It’s taken a few years of work, but now when they hear the laundry cupboard opening, they run down the hallway because they know it’s walk time. A pocket full of treats will entice any dog. We walk for kilometres now, with no complaints. It’s so pleasing to see this positive change. The hardest thing now is when we have to leave them when we go to work. We miss them so much, but come home time we cant wait to see their smiling faces and hear their excited chatter. We went on an overseas trip last year and we left both the dogs securely cared for. It broke our hearts leaving them for 3 weeks. We knew we'd miss them, but didn't realise how much. It was like leaving your kids at home. They are our kids. It was so good to get back to see them again. At first they didn’t recognise us but after a while they settled down when they realised who we were. We can’t imagine life without them now and wonder how we ever managed. They still aren't keen on the vacuum, but eventually I'll teach them to use it.
So it’s with big thanks to Monika’s DoggieRescue for rescuing these little animals and thanks for thinking we would be good parents to them. Hard to believe on the 22nd March this year we have had them 2 years. Time’s gone so quickly. 2 years for us, 14 in dog years. We love them both so much. Ian, Olivia, Penny and Piper Adams.

SAVING CATS LIVES Never believe that a few caring people cannot change the fate of many animals… Because it can and has happened! Hello Readers, It is so inspiring to see Blacktown Animal Holding Facility working together with rescue groups to save as many abandoned animals as they can but it’s been particularly bad these last few weeks. Too many cats and kittens. Not enough homes. Not enough foster carers. The list for euthanasia when it came through was a long one ranging from a very scared pair of surrendered cats to young adults and even small kittens. 60 cats in the pound were on death row, with 25 due for euthanasia on Monday. To save as many as possible and with the pound’s full support an urgent plea was put out by RescueCatProject https://www.facebook.com/RescueCatProject.Homepage and with only until Monday at 4.30pm to do it. All through that terrible weekend cat lovers pledged donations to help with the cost of adopting the desperate cats. Slowly one, two, three, then five were safe. Messages of support came from far and wide but there were just too many, too, too many. It seemed that in the end there would be no happy endings for most of the abandoned pets. It was hard not to feel ashamed for the irresponsible owners who had dumped or surrendered their unwanted pets to their unknown fate. Or had simply not desexed their cat and got rid of the consequences. These cats and kittens had become well known to our E-Magazine readers—ginger, black and white, grey, pure black and pure white, so many lovely cats now with names and their personalities well known. 4.30pm edged ever closer and soon was past. It seemed of the cats on the euthanasia list only the chosen five would be lucky enough to survive. I am sure many followers, including myself, looked with dread on the Tuesday to see if any more managed to be adopted but with not much hope. I felt compelled to write this story because, amazing as it seems, there is a happy ending. RescueCatProject continues the story…. Corinne, Editor.
Michelle from DoggieRescue picking up the cats from Blacktown Animal Holding Facility. A big, big thank you to Monika's DoggieRescue for their amazing help in taking cats out of the pound today! We breathed a sigh of relief when we saw you walk in and waved good bye as these precious souls walked out. DoggieRescue took not only the cats left on the euthanasia list but also a many more kittens and cats. So many desperate cats and kittens were saved. Best of luck to all our ex Blacktown pound cats and kittens, we wish you the very best in life!! RescueCatProject
APRIL 2015 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE SO HOW DID DOGGIERESCUE SAVE SO MANY CATS AND KITTENS FROM DEATH ROW AT BLACKTOWN? Well, it happened like this! Rachel, a DoggieRescue volunteer and supporter had seen the cat’s plight highlighted in Doggie Rescue E-Magazine and had a brilliant idea...Below is the email she sent to her DR contacts and her idea was set in motion. There are 60 kittens and cats on death row at Blacktown Animal Holding Facility and I believe we can all save them. There are many more than the needed vets in Sydney and if only each will be willing to foster a kitten/cat and keep it until they can find a home for it we can save these lives. Will you help me to contact vets to do so? There are so many of us, if we each can connect with vets in our area and find one or two who are willing we can do it. Will you help me as we do not have much time. Rachel

Not only were the death row cats and kittens saved but many more besides including a couple of mothers with newborn/very young kittens. Many were placed into vets care, with DoggieRescue rescuing the rest including our cover boy Fergus ( was Klosters ) Due to people who cared and had the determination to make a difference the fate of the abandoned cats & kittens was changed from DEATH to LIFE.

APRIL 2015 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE Hello Readers,
Meet our beautiful foster doggie
Kinks (affectionately known as Bugsy) is a very precious senior, who came to us in July 2008 to recover from knee surgery as he was limping badly when DR rescued him from the pound. I remember one of the DR ladies bringing him over just a day after his surgery. He was all bandaged and needed to be carried in and out of the house whenever he needed to go to the toilet as he was pretty much on bed rest for the first week or so. Right from the start Kinks seemed to understand that he was being helped and he never once complained about being picked up to be taken outside or being given medication or having his bandages checked. He just went with the flow. A few weeks later he was diagnosed with Cushings disease and was put on medication to manage the condition.
THE JOY OF FOSTERING By Marina De Marchi
“ Older doggies have a real charm about them….” Background: Kinks ( was originally known as Bugsy ) is a small, tri colour Foxy x who came from the pound in 2008 with an injured leg which needed surgery. Due to his fragile condition a foster carer was needed for him to be able to have one on one care while he recovered from surgery as he was limping badly. Marina was perfect for Kinks as she and her family had fostered dogs from DoggieRescue before. This is her story.
In 2010 he was briefly adopted, but was returned to DR after a week as he showed a propensity for chasing the family chickens. When Doggie Rescue called me to say he was being returned to the shelter, we were delighted to take him back and he was equally delighted to see us when we went to pick him up at Ingleside, and he’s happily been with us ever since. The only reason we haven’t adopted him ourselves was that his medication was very expensive and we have three ageing dogs of our own. When you foster, DoggieRescue pays for any medication your foster doggie might need as well as any vet bills ( with pre approval ) so for us fostering Kinks was ideal and we could give him the loving, stable home environment that he craved.
APRIL 2015 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE Being a senior with a fair bit of arthritis, Kinks doesn’t join us on walks with our other doggies because he can’t sustain a long walk, so whenever I can, I put him in a stroller and take him out to different places where he can walk around and smell all the different dog scents and meet other dogs who might be out on their walks, which is something he really enjoys. Other than that, he’s happy to potter around our garden which is quite large or just lie in the sun with our doggies. He’s so easy to please! Kinks is just grateful to have a home where he’s part of a family and knows that he’s loved. We have fostered this elderly gentleman for seven years this July and he has never been any trouble at all. He’s a very loyal, loving boy who despite his arthritis always gets up from one of his many cushions placed around the house to follow me wherever I go. It’s quite
21 and observing Kinks for a while, it was decided he should come home and see how he went. So far he seems to have gone from strength to strength and we have our fingers crossed. Older doggies have a real charm about them. Sure, they may have a few requirements such as medications or maybe needing a bit of a hand to get up steps from the garden onto the deck, but they are really no trouble at all and they have so much love to give.
uncanny how he can be fast asleep, and always wake up as soon as I leave the room to follow me – almost as if he has a sixth sense. At the moment he’s sitting next to me on his cushion as I’m typing his story.
It’s so rewarding to either FOSTER or ADOPT an older doggie and give them a safe, loving home that will hopefully make up for whatever misfortune they may have had in their past lives.
Back in October, Kinks gave us a huge scare as he suddenly became very ill. It was five days of high drama which ended with Monika meeting me at the vets with euthanasia a possibility. Monika was so wonderful – she turned up with some boiled chicken which Kinks actually ate. Kinks was also able to stand a bit which he hadn’t been able to do. After chatting to Peter the vet

EASTER LILIES • These flowers are beautiful and festive, but should be avoided at all costs if you share your home with pets. Easter Lilies are one of the most poisonous plants for pets, especially to cats. Vomiting, lethargy and loss of appetite are symptoms of lily poisoning.

Pets can not digest it, leading to the threads getting stuck in and damaging their intestines. Tip: A better choice? Use paper, or even real grass in your Easter baskets!

Most Easter eggs are wrapped in shiny foil and while it looks very pretty, if swallowed, it can pose a choking or obstruction hazard for your pet.
ducks who appear in pet store windows at this time of year. Pressure from a child is a temptation for parents but spur of the moment purchases often end in abandonment for those pets who are dumped in pounds when the novelty wears off. Adopting a baby animal is a LONG TERM COMMITMENT not to be taken impulsively. A better option for an Easter gift for a child? A cute, cuddly toy like the ones featured above.
EASTER COSTUMES • Pets can look cute dressed as ‘Easter bunnies’ but make sure that they are not feeling stressed or in too tight, uncomfortable costumes.

VERY OVERDUE
Imp. 712 VESTA 1-2yrs Torti Female Little Vesta is another one of these little cats that are now turning up reasonably regularly in the pound wearing harlequin pants. This little lady has the most remarkable pair. She is really something quite special indeed. Vesta is seeking her own someone, and is hoping for a Happy Easter. BEAUTIFUL GINGER FEMALE
Imp. 1456 SAFARI 1-2yrs Ginger/Tabby Female Safari was snapped in the attempt to find a beautiful ginger female (quite rare) cat to bring to you all. Ginger cats come in so many different shades and this pretty lady was the one that we found particularly lovely. A junior or young adult cat, she was adorable, and trustworthy enough to stand on the "white carpet" all by herself without any restraint. She even sat down! Too beautiful to stay in a pound - we would love to see her fill her parental vacancy.$230 to adopt - love comes free.
ABANDONDED MOTHER
Imp. 948 MYOKO 2-4yrs Blue Torty Female You may recall this beautiful little blue tortoiseshell from last month’s issue. She then had a gorgeous little champagne kitten with her, who was quickly snaffled up but sadly little Mummy Myoko remains in the shelf at this stage, and as we all know, that is a very dangerous place to be. So here is her photo to remind us all of what a spectacular blue tortoiseshell she is, and that she still needs a home. URGENTLY as she is very overdue. Anyone? $230 to adopt love comes free.

DROOLS WITH LOVE ABANDONDED MOTHER
Imp. 1203 AMSU 2-4YRS Smokey Black Male
Imp. 1204 SIROCCO 1-2yrs Tabby/White Female
This cat is truly fabulous. Large, lithe and lovely, Amsu is a big boy in need of a big heart. As you can see from these photos, his head takes up a good portion of a human hand - but doesn't he love the cuddles!
Sirocco was the first mother cat to enter the cattery after the mothers and babies section was cleaned out by Doggie Rescue a few weeks ago. She arrived as a surrender cat with a single baby, who has probably gone to live with all of the babies in the baby runs. She is now by herself. This beautiful girl surely loves her cuddles. The photo does not show the absolutely sweet nature that she has. We love (not only her good looks, but also her attitude!) $230 to adopt - love comes free.
Amsu was a terrific subject to photograph and had a lovely personality to boot. How do cats like this end up in pounds? It is something we don’t understand. $230 to adopt - love comes free.
STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL
Imp. 1324 J’ADORE 6-8yrs Grey Female There were so many beautiful cats this week at Blacktown that it was hard to choose who to photograph! Seeing this gorgeous cat I have to say - you should not underestimate how many truly fabulous cats come into BAHF who do not have great photos on the web site and are never properly promoted. Oh - and the reason why I have said nothing about this glorious girl? I don't need to - the photos speak for themselves. She is simply stunning.$230 to adopt - love comes free.

“ My name is DJANGO and I’m KING OF THE WORLD ” See YouTube video: http://youtu.be/r4Qxm0pJmJY
If I wasn’t me I’d like to be - a working cattle dog! I learn new things easily, I love to run and chase. I’d be so happy to protect a herd all day, just to hear those words "Good Boy!" It took a while but I was finally trained to – fetch! I didn't catch on at first one day I saw how much praise my family gave my friend Jimmy when he brought the ball back, when they threw it again I took it off him and brought it right back!! I wish I could - please people more. So I could get more attention. More, more, more!! I hate to whine but - thunderstorms just suck. My tail wags most when - Ryan's home! I love cuddles with Anna but I go bonkers when Ryan comes home from work!!! My relationship with other dogs is - great! I love making new friends! It must have been all the playtime at Doggie Rescue, ‘cause I seem to know the right way to play! Gentle with a timid dog or a puppy, rowdy with a big Staffy, chilled with an old dog. My owners are so proud of me. If I could wish fleas on someone it would be - my former owners for not picking me up from the pound when I was a puppy. C'mon man! I was micro chipped! My nickname is – Djangawang, Djang or Little Dog If I impersonated a movie star I’d be - Michael J Fox My yappiest moments are - when my owners ask "what's that?" I run to the door and bark big and tough, even though I'm small. Then I get lots of cuddles for protecting the house. When I heard I was to star in DR magazine I – groomed myself a bit and then ran back out into the yard. Ha! Ha! Ha! But my family seemed pretty excited! The food that makes me drool is – chicken! Or bacon! Oooh...cheese!! No, no…. leftover cereal milk!!!! Life is – a beach! I love the water and rolling in the sand:)
APRIL 2015 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE I often wonder - who's on the other side of the fence? Who is it? Grrrrrr My greatest achievement is - trusting new people, especially dudes. When I first met Ryan and Anna it took over an hour for me to work up the nerve to get in the car, and even then it was because Monika got in the car and offered me treats. I let Anna pet me, but I didn't want Ryan to touch me for my first 3 days. The first time I met Anna and Ryan's friends my hackles went up, I growled and I hid. But then I learned that sometimes new friends have bacon, and if I'm brave enough to come close and get it they're actually really nice! Now I LOVE it when friends come over and am more than happy to meet new people and have a pat. My favourite place in the world is - the beach! The first time they took me to play in the ocean I was SO HAPPY. And then I chased birds!! And then my friends where there and we all played in the sand! Then I got hot and swam again, but then I had to chase birds. So then I just sat in the sun with Anna and watched Ryan surf. To all those dogs waiting in pounds I say - don't be limited by what's happened in your past! My description on the Pet Rescue website said I didn't like to be touched on the neck, would suit being around older children and didn't like being picked up by strangers. Tell me, who likes to be picked up by strangers? Who you are in the shelter is just a sliver of who you can grow into if you're in a happy family like I am. I love ANY kind of pat or touch now, and I'm very happy to sit nicely and get a pat from toddlers and young kids. I hope the Easter Bunny brings me - BACON!

A HOME FOR EASTER “VINCE IS THE LIVING PROOF TO NEWTON’S LAW THAT FOR EVERY FORCE THERE IS AN EQUAL COUNTER FORCE.”
By Rachel Sussman, DR Volunteer
One day you will be special Vince, I promise….
WHEN I FIRST MET VINCE: He kept growling at me! He growled when I fed him, growled when I cleaned and growled when I washed the floor. ‘You cranky little boy’ I thought and wondered how badly humans had let him down. But this did not last. After a couple of visits Vince was standing next to me and looking at me. Should I attempt to pat him? I did, and that was it. Our bond was formed…. WHAT MAKES VINCE SPECIAL? Vince has a heart much bigger than his shy growl, he is a true softie who will shower you with love once he knows you are ok. These days I cannot wait to see Vince on my feeding days a and he is among the first that greet me. Vince is a playful boy and has settled beautifully with me. He will make a great addition to a family that is just willing to love him. “I wish so much for you to find your forever home Vince for I know you will enrich the family who adopts you. All you need is someone who is understanding and a little patient. My fingers are crossed that Easter finds you in a home of your very own” Rachel
Vince Maltese x 3yrs 8kgs Male Sponsor:“ We’ve cuddles to spare!” Kerry & Maltese Max
VINCE LIKES: He loves to play with toys, likes the company of other dogs, loves one on one attention and being spoilt by the volunteers. He also loves CHICKEN! VINCE DISLIKES: He does not like his bath nor grooming! I believe he will need a professional groomer, as many long haired dogs do. He is also not impressed when other dogs take the attention away from him and may quietly growl.

MALTESE LOYAL, LOVING, INTELLIGENT & BRAVE The beautiful Maltese, or cross of that breed, are an active, fun loving, intelligent dog who bonds very closely to their family. They can be loyal and very affectionate and for a small breed have a huge heart. They make excellent little watchdogs, are very protective and they also have a loud bark. Maltese have profuse hair which has to be maintained to look good and so they need committed owners. Many Maltese are abandoned in a shocking state, filthy and matted to the skin by people who haven not been prepared to put in the time to care a long haired dog. If you are looking for a loyal, loving dog with personality plus, this is the breed for you! CHILDREN & RABBITS! With thanks to www.boingonline.com for anything you need to know about rabbits...
With Easter almost here baby bunnies again sit in pet shop windows hoping some Mum or Dad will see them and think they are cute and cuddly—just the perfect Easter gift for a small child! Cute and cuddly they may be and for far too long it has been thought that rabbits are great "starter" pets for small children. This is completely inaccurate. Rabbits need gentle care. Rabbits are misunderstood and delicate creatures with quite strong personalities, sharp teeth and nails. Not only can children easily injure a rabbit but also a rabbit can injure your child. All children under 15 should be supervised with a rabbit. When a rabbit and child are not supervised, the rabbit will always come out second best. Sadly there are too many stories about rabbits being accidentally killed by small children, such as the bunny who was taken to the park and dropped down the slide until it didn't move anymore. Or the one that was brought inside to sleep with a little girl who placed it under her pillow where it suffocated overnight. That's just two true stories, sadly there are so many more. Rabbits are living, breathing little bundles of personality and love but they are also timid creatures and loud noises and children running around can scare them.
A BUNNY IS NOT A TOY! Injuries to the children & rabbit •
Scratches & kicking Rabbits are built differently to other animals and can easily be injured if not interacted with correctly. Rabbits are very bottom heavy. Their back legs are much bigger than their front legs and this means that they hold most of their weight in the second half of their body. If a rabbit is held or picked up incorrectly, a rabbit will panic and kick out with its strong hind legs. This kicking can cause a child to drop the rabbit. A rabbit will drop to the ground bottom first causing breaks, serious injury and sometimes death. The child will also be injured by the scratching of the nails and the kicking of the legs.

Bites from sharp teeth
When a rabbit turns 5-6 months of age, a bunny will change from that fluffy, cute and tolerant rabbit that they once were as a baby bunny. Once a bunny hits 6 months of age, they are now a teenager. Their personality emerges and they start to make their own decisions on how they want to be treated by their human friends. Rabbits have very strong personalities and if they do not want to be handled or picked up as they did as a baby bunny, or are frightened by chasing or loud noises, they will start to lunge and bite the children.
A rabbit's bite is very sharp and hard. A rabbit's front teeth need to constantly grow and grind down to the sharpness of a razor blade to ensure they can chew hard fibrous foods. When a rabbit bites human skin, the incisor teeth plunge deep into the skin. Rabbits can hold their bite in fear for quite a long time and the pain is intense. (See a rabbit bite on hand at left.)
4 IMPORTANT things you need to know about rabbits... 1.
Rabbits HATE loud noises and will attack if threatened: Rabbits are not fond of loud noises, being chased and are very territorial and aggressive if threatened. Most rabbits that are surrendered to shelters were bought for small children. When the bunny hits the age of around 6 months, they start to mature and become their own little personality. This is when the bunny decides that they will not tolerate being picked up or handled roughly. Rabbits can start to growl, lunge, bite or chase whoever is the threat. Once a bunny starts to show these signs, most families ditch the bun instead of learning how to adjust and interact with their maturing rabbit.
2.
Do you have 10 years to dedicate to a rabbit? Rabbits live for 10 years or more if looked after properly. Rabbits need regular veterinary visits, desexing & yearly vaccinations. Desexing helps with behaviour and long term health issues. Calici vaccinations are yearly and this is a good opportunity to have your bun’s health checked. Rabbits age 8 years to our 1 so a yearly check up is vital to keep up with any health issues.
3.
Rabbits need good food: Rabbits need good quality vegies that you would eat yourself, not freebies from a bin. Rabbits need good quality hay from a stockfeed store, not dried up pet hay from a pet shop or inedible straw.
4.
Rabbits need to know they are safe: Rabbits need a safe space to run, not cooped up in a box in the backyard or left outside to fend for themselves. If inside, they need a safe bunny proofed room and a safe place to sleep. If they live outside, their enclosure needs to be BIG and INSECT/PREDATOR PROOFED.
All this requires money. Rabbits need a mature person to look after them. They are not a toy for a small child. PLEASE don’t buy a rabbit as an Easter present unless you can care for it…

Express your love and commitment to the doggies who no one else cares about! With your regular monthly contribution our life-saving work will continue….
BECOME A DOGGIERESCUE LIFESAVER Did you know that 28,090 dogs & cats were destroyed in Pounds in NSW alone in 2011-2012. DoggieRescue is dedicated to saving these precious lives. Operating as a charity for 19 years we have rescued over 11,000 dogs from council pounds. DoggieRescue is dedicated to saving precious lives. These dogs receive immediate medical care, are de-sexed, vaccinated and micro-chipped and await a loving family at our shelter, “Doggie Wood” at Ingleside. We are a “no-kill” shelter. Our commitment to these dogs is for the rest of their lives. Our running costs are considerable and increasing. We receive no government funding and rely exclusively on donations. In this economic climate our need for support has never been greater…. • Your contribution of $29 per month pays for food & shelter costs for 1 doggie • Your contribution of $49 per month pays for food, shelter & veterinary costs for 1 doggie • Your contribution of $79 per month pays for food, shelter and veterinary costs and contributes to the expansion of our program – there are thousands more lives to be saved! See the sign up form on the inside of the back page, or visit our website!
