CLASSES

Formula 3 / SST 60 TCPBA’s most popular class is the Formula 3 (F3) Class. These 14ft tunnel boats are equipped with 56 cubic inch OMC’s that reach speeds of 85 mph! These boats are lightweight, agile, and accelerate quickly. Competitors must be 16 years of age. Minimum weight is 825lbs with driver included. Startup costs are between $6,500 and $15,000. Formula 2/ SST 120

Formula 2 (F2) is one of TCPBA’s most crowd appealing classes. These lightweight tunnel hulls reach speeds of in excess of 110 mph. Competitors in the F2 class race 2.0 Liter and 2.5 Liter engines. The engines produce 200 horsepower and the overall race package with driver weighs 1,100 lbs. Competitors must be 18 years of age

Formula 150 Formula 150 is a class gaining popularity throughout the world! Formula 150 is a unique class that allows 100 to 158 cubic inch power by Suzuki, Yamaha, OMC, and Mercury. The legal Mercury motors included highly modified 2.0 , 2.4 , and 2.5 Liters.. Competitors must be 18 years of age. Minimum weight is 1,050lbs with drive included. These high powered boats will reach race speeds of 135 mph. The Kilo straight-away record was set at 138.47 MPH.

SST 200

TCPBA.ORG

The SST 200 (Super Sport Tunnel) outboard is the next generation of Formula 2 powerboat racing. This class truly makes speed simple. It uses a maintenance free “green” engine that does not require mixing gas and oil—truly the non-mechanic’s friend. The OptiMax is one of only two engines that can be bought and raced as-is direct from the manufacturer. At the same time, SST 200 offers spectacular speed and excitement and is recognized and raced worldwide. The same sleek tunnel hull raced in SST 120 is matched with the OptiMax engine for a powerful racing package. Ready to go green and go racing? If you’re looking for speed, green technology and long-term durability, SST 200 is for you!

WHAT TO BRING TO A RACE Probably the most important item you could bring is an umbrella or a pop up tent. It will help shade you from the blazing sun and if it happens to rain, you’ll be covered. Races will continue to run during light rain showers, as long as the conditions aren’t deemed too severe Remember, Comfort is Key. Even on an overcast day, you can’t hide from the sun; and being on a water front means that the sun will be even stronger reflecting off of the surface of the water. Remember Sunscreen unless you want to leave the race extra crispy. Ice Cold Refreshments are always good – especially on race day. Some races do not allow coolers; while others will allow you to bring drinks in with you…it’s best to check beforehand with the race

site. We also encourage you to support the local food & beverage vendors at races that have them. Comfortable folding chairs with four separate legs are best – these will prevent rocking on uneven ground. If you’re looking to take some good action shots of boats during the race, you’re going to need a good camera. Sorry folks, iPhones aren’t the best at capturing boats flying past at top speed. A high speed camera with at least 1/1000 second shutter speed is recommended.

Where to Sit

Finding a good spot to watch the race isn’t hard, and there’s usually plenty of space for spectators to be comfortable. Look to set up camp along the straight away side of the course to the left of the starting line or the clock. Anywhere between this area and the first turn is where all the action takes place.

The Race Course Just like other motor sports, the inside lane is the best position in powerboat racing. It provides the shortest distance around the course, and gives an advantage to any racer. The overall length of the race is one mile, TCPBA.ORG

but depending on the size of the course, the number of laps may vary from 10-20 total laps for a complete race.

Jasen Lindenbach from Regina

Class: SST 120 Boat Number: 91 Years Racing: Rookie Accomplishments: None yet, but hoping to change that in the near future! Sponsors: Element Roofing History: I’m excited to start racing this year. I own and operate a small business, Element Roofing Ltd. which will be sponsoring me this season. Growing up, my dad built race engines for a living and I spent lots of time at the drag races. Ever since I can remember I’ve been addicted to horsepower, which is evidenced by my driving infractions in my late teens and early 20’s which could have paid for my race boat. My first experience with fast boats was as a teenager when riding in a family friend’s tunnel hull with a 2.4 Bridgeport. That boat ended up being the first boat I bought and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve upgraded boats and horsepower several times and am excited to be moving into the SST120 class this year. Words of Wisdom: I’m not that wise to be giving out words of wisdom. “Make it happen.”

Tunnel hull design A tunnel hull is a type of boat hull that uses two typically planing hulls with a solid centre that traps air. This entrapment then creates aerodynamic lift in addition to the planing (hydrodynamic) lift from the hulls. Many times this is attributed to ground effect. Theoretical research and full-scale testing of tunnel hulls has demonstrated the dramatic contributions of 'close-proximity ground effect' on enhanced aerodynamic lift/drag in operation of performance tunnel hull designs. TCPBA.ORG

Tunnel hulls are distinguishable from other catamarans by the typical close hull spacing and solid deck in between the hulls. Formula 1 powerboats have a tunnel hull catamaran design allowing them to go faster. Tunnel hulls are a common design in References Secrets of Tunnel Boat Design”, JDRussell,P. Eng

The TCPBA Rescue Dive Team consists of members of East Bethel Fire, Farmington Fire and Washington Co Sheriff Office. As a group we trained in Illinois with other rescue teams to improve our skills. Our vast array of knowledge, experience and continued training make us confident that the Twin City Power Boat Racers are safe. They know we will be there in the event a situation occurs and a rescue is needed. As a group we conduct our pilot capsule training to insure that the pilots are confident and ready to race. The drivers are put in a simulator and pushed over upside down in the water and have to release their restraints and swim out of boat, and use scuba equipment if the need arises.
