where her litter brother, Ch. Mueller’s Blazing Kane took BOB. Of the 61 champions owned and/or bred by Mary Jo many went to group wins and placings including Ch. Welcome Sunday Best’s triumph at the San Mateo Kennel Club show. In addition, the biggest winners and producers with the Welcome prefix were father and son. Ch. Welcome Great Day owned and bred by Mary Jo became a producer of significance. And Great Day’s son, Ch. Welcome Happy Talk, out of Ch. Flo-Bob’s Me Too, was the foundation for Linda Riedel’s internationally known Ramblewood Kennels and produced over 100 champion get in the United States and many more with foreign titles.
F
inally, for any long time breeder-exhibitor it is the memories of the heart that mark a dog with a special greatness. For Mary Jo Hosteny there were two that were so beloved: Ch. Welcome Belinda Bee and Ch.Frejax Bit of Old Blighty, CDX. When English Springer Spaniels enter the ring today and there is applause for the great beauty and excellence that abounds in the breed it is important to take time to remember that many hands went into the consistent improvements that we now enjoy. The dogs they bred, the dogs they showed, the dogs they loved while no longer on a one page pedigree, are essential to our understanding the breed. And Mary Jo Hosteny was one of those “many hands” who contributed to the past and indeed to the present. May her memory live on into the future.
