A Great Monday And Tuesday Unbelievably the weather held off and the days associated with the Westminster celebration were cold but basically snow free. Roads in the City of New York were basically passable whilst planes and trains ran in a timely fashion. Parties galore highlighted by Pet Partners (AKC’s pet insurance firm) underwriting for the AKC Humane Fund its theatre benefit headed by the KINKY BOOTS Broadway show. The Russian Tea Room turned out not to be the greatest choice for the dinner but sometimes circumstances outweigh choices. What was a great choice was the selection of the Wire Fox Terrier, America’s Top Dog for 2013, as the ultimate Best in Show winner. Co-owned by the team of Victor Malzoni, Jr. (Hampton Court) and Torie Steele (Steele Kennel) this AENC victress in 2012 and Montgomery BIS winner of 2013 topped off her career and pleased her myriad of fans by winning the most meaningful show in the USA for the past 138 years, the Westminster Kennel Club in 2014. In as tough a line-up as has been seen in years this show bitch stormed to yet another glorious star in her illustrious career headed of course by the husband/wife handling team of Gabriel and Ivonne Rangel. Gabriel came to the States some 30 short years ago from Mexico a virtual unknown and has become one of the most influential dog handlers in years. His story is for sure an American dream come true--a hard work ethic and devotion to home, family and his profession! With a year of going from the Piers to the Garden on Monday and Tuesday under the belts of the dog show goers not only has this experiment proved worthwhile but dog enthusiasts the worldwide seem to agree that the trek between going up and/or downtown is not a trek at all but a chance at seeing parts of New York City one would not ordinarily view as well. The remade MSG is a home run modernization whilst the conveniences of the Piers far outweigh any temporary travel problems as dogs, exhibitors and

spectators alike are treated to greater comfort than ever could be provided at the smaller enhanced Madison Square Garden. A great find and experiment on the part of Sean McCarthy, the President of Westminster, and the people with whom he works headed by Show Chair Tom Bradley. The Agility experiment was celebrated nationally and further enhanced the credibility of our sport and the event they associate mostly with our sport, the Westminster Kennel Club, as the lead representative within the family of the dog. Purina’s role in this celebration of the dog cannot be overlooked as its support is major in aspect. These various independent operating teams join together once a year to present the most prestigious dog show in America if not the world. Not only are we all a part of it but we must be grateful too for the time and evolution and success for which their efforts have succeeded in having achieved.

The Judging Confusions Multiply First let these pages reiterate our feelings that there are so many other problems facing this great competitive sport of ours than “just” judging situations that the amount of time spent by all too many people in the sport discussing judging is out of proportion to the overall picture faced by concerned people within our sport. Nonetheless and recognizing this fact within the last several months so many confusing, conflicting so-called judging problems have arisen that the overall philosophical topic of the judging profession must be discussed. It is time to reevaluate AKC’s positions and stands on this subject and to find new, reasonable and sensible ways to establish both a Judging Department and Judging Approval Procedures. Why between the various interpretations as to whether or not Judges with or without their name being used may pose for advertisements supporting food companies’ products or decisions are upheld or reversed with regard to judging approvals there is no foundation in fact upon which to rely or depend. We know--here we go again but the solutions or Band-Aids of the last several years have solved nothing and further pushed the topic of judging dogs in America into a total state of disarray. Years ago these pages suggested establishing an entirely independent organization and committee to modernize not only the judging department but the manner in which AKC regulates ITS shows and entire

competitive side of the sport of the purebred dog. What with the growth of Agility this situation has become even more critical than ever. Special Board Meetings to the contrary notwithstanding times have changed so radically and are so in need of a total revamping that if we hope to survive in the future radical decisions and changes are necessary. Let’s get on it folks--the time to act is now!!!

Akc’s Presence At Westminster These pages marveled at the number of AKC booths and subsidiaries that were on display at Westminster and at the Piers. From CHF to AKC Art to the AKC Merchandise booth to a myriad of AKC related topics it’s no wonder the general public considers AKC and Westminster to be one and the same. We are not saying this is a bad situation at all but how closely are these two titans within the dog world interrelated? On paper today very little. But there seems to be a tremendous amount of behind the scenes work which goes on with these two very different but impressive organizations and it is the opinion of these pages that AKC benefits more from being associated with Westminster than vice versa. To the public and in fact today Westminster, which is an individual club and licensed by AKC, appears to set the standard in establishing modernity as its goals whereas AKC mired in its operations by a very less than progressive Delegate Body seems to be the follower rather than the leader. Of further interest about Westminster this year is that usually the floor of the Garden is rife with political talk of the coming elections. Well there is no longer a floor to the Garden since the Piers are so spread out that gatherings of individuals to discuss AKC affairs does not occur since there is truly no true place to sit and converse on topics generally. These little meetings were usually chance occurrences, neither pre-planned nor organized--today there is little opportunity for those sort of happenings--too bad from our prospective for sure.

Thought For The Week The next national sort of show is Chicago’s International Kennel Club to be held at the end of February. Once again Americans from around the country will gather for this great show. Perhaps not in the large numbers as the Garden or the AENC nonetheless the significance of International remains as one of the shining stars of our sport. Long live this show and its national success story.

lene’s shared love of vanilla wafers and Pepsi. Upon showing Jerry, Marlene quickly found out what a standard is and began breeding Pomeranians. Marlene showed many of her own offspring and became known as Miss Pomeranian. In the early 1950’s she began showing for other top Pomeranian Kennels such as Great Elms Kennels, Emcee Kennels, Wee Heart Poms and many others. The first Pomeranian Marlene finished was a sable male. Marlene also finished Tar Baby, the first “black and tan” Pomeranian. Over the years, Marlene handled many Best In Show winners as well as mentoring some of today’s top breeders. Marlene judged several Pomeranian Specialties with the most notable one being in Japan. Marlene joined the Professional Handlers Association in 1968 when she became an allbreed handler. She has been president of many clubs for several terms including The American Pomeranian Club and The Roanoke Kennel Club. Marlene was the consummate professional handler and constantly drew the attention of photographers and journalists including People Magazine. Marlene was a Lifetime Member of the PCA and recently was inducted into the Hall of Fame for PHA. A memorial service will held at Villamont Presbyterian Church on March 9, 2014 in Villamont, VA. TRUE North A Report From Canada

By Allison Foley

As we approach

the sixth weekend of the year, Canada has seen only 1 weekend of dog shows in 2014. Yet during the summer months and the late fall there will be 3 or 4 clubs having clusters of shows on the same weekends competing for entries. And some of the clubs will easily be within driving distance of each other. Is it time for a dog show reset? And what would that look like? Would it be something that the Canadian Kennel Club would introduce or (and I like this solution better) can the clubs themselves get together and try to make this work for everyone? Of course when we talk about dog shows in the winter, everyone will talk about the weather, especially as this year has been so daunting weather wise, but in reality people will get to where they need to go and use common sense as to whether or not they should drive in such conditions. What would a dog show reset look like? Could clubs decide to spread out the shows so that we had say 2 weekends in January, February, March and maybe 2 weekends in November and December, leaving those months a little freer in case of bad weather? Let people actually have time at home for the holidays? Free up the Canadian show Calendar so that our top dogs can compete at such world-attended events such Continued on page 114 as Eukanuba, Westminster and Crufts, without losing

precious ground here at home? Surely this would benefit all of us. Our top dogs could compete on the world stage and keep their standing here at home. In Atlantic Canada (and actually including Quebec there are 5 provinces) for example there are no shows from the first weekend in November until the weekend of Westminster in February. By moving these shows in February by just one weekend either way it would allow fanciers to attend both events. Whether a spectator or exhibitor it would be nice to allow for both options. It would take a while for a system reset, and like everything else there would be growing pains. By having shows spread out over all 12 months I think it would be easier for the exhibitors to budget their show costs, and it would be nicer for puppies born in the summer months to actually have shows to go to as puppies when they reach 6 months of age. Perhaps the argument would be that it is too hard to find winter venues (in the True North many shows are actually held in hockey arenas that have ice and are booked up in the winter months). With a little research and negotiation perhaps affordable winter venues would appear. With advertising and promotion maybe drawing gate revenue from the public could help offset the costs (and perhaps have the added benefit and drawing in new faces to our sport). A recent poll of a cross section of Canadian dog fanciers done by a respected online magazine showed that most were in favour of having our shows spread out in a more consistent pattern. Most also agreed that this should be done by the clubs working together and trying to find a solution and not with input from the CKC directly. I wonder what else can be done to get this discussion to go further.

Another

problem that has “cropped up” here in the True North. Several Provincial Veterinary associations have banned the practice of cropping and docking by the members of their association. Basically to practice veterinary medicine you must be a member of the association so therefore no veterinarians in those provinces can practice cropping and docking. Some provinces and some veterinarians will report an animal that is docked at home or had dewclaw removal done at home to the SPCA as a Cruelty to Animals case. Therefore the Canadian Kennel Club has allowed parent clubs of breeds that require in their standards to have dogs cropped, docked or dewclaws removed to change their standards. The official announcement from the Canadian Kennel Club: Breed Standard Amendments Re: Docking, Cropping and Dewclaw Removal For the past six (6) months, the Select

Asked of veterinarians who judge dogs - do you find that as a vet your priorities when judging tend to be different from those of other people? This question was inspired by ENGLISH DOG NEWS and originally appeared in the March 15, 1996 issue of Dog News. We thought in was worth repeating today.

h on Of T Questi

al KRAUSE Yes, I suppose that by dint of my background I emphasize soundness perhaps because I am more aware of the anatomy and when anatomical problems, such as a shorter upper arm, arise I penalize this heavily. This does not make me a better judge but it does mean that movement does preoccupy my thoughts. Similarly, a wry mouth which effects chewing is one of my pet peeves. David Qualls I know what my priorities are and it is difficult to evaluate others’ priorities. In some cases we may have a little more insight on structural problems but I hope that we are all judging with the same interpretation of the standard in the mind’s eye. JOHN REEVE-NEWSOM I pay a lot of attention to body and coat condition and I tend to be unforgiving if a dog is presented underweight or in bad condition which I suppose is because of my training. These factors combined with bad muscle tone suggest to me a lack of care and concern on the part of the owners and/or handler.

BOB BROWN I guess it’s impossible to answer for what other people’s thought processes may or may not be but I may be more aware of faults which are medically damaging than concern other judges. My particular concern is the Rottweiler Standard which makes entropian and ectopian a disqualification which in fact acknowledges that everyone who judges the breed to be an ophthalmologist. Just a little dirt in the eye could cause a problem and result in a disqualification.

AThought To Consider The Credentials That Really Matter by Seymour Weiss

It’s been awhile. Every time I thought “I really need to

get out an article for Dog News” I was stopped by a kind of writer’s block. I tried a few ideas, but part way into the piece, the premise seemed not to work and I gave up on it. In all the years I have written in the dog press, I have learned, for me at least, that an article worked best if it flowed, if it almost wrote itself. To try grinding out something, anything, was the best way of coming up with an article not worth my time to write or your time to read. Some readers may disagree, but I don’t write no junk! At least I don’t think I do. I do read, however, and my reading causes me to be concerned about the current direction of the contemporary dog sport in America. I don’t consider myself a prophet of gloom and doom and I don’t believe the conformation dog sport is speeding toward the precipice to oblivion. I also observe and observation also leads me, and many others I am sure, to consider that dog fanciers are far from a doomed race. While the AR loonies sneak into Westminster with their absurd signs, we can take comfort in the knowledge that Garden security will be on hand to give them the bums’ rush they deserve. While AR screams about taking away our right to breed dogs, legions of us will be quietly planning breedings, whelping litters and watching our babies grow into the dogs we have been dreaming of. One part of the sport that has never changed is the attention directed toward our judges. Whether one is a strict specialist, a judge of one group or several or the most rarefied of all, an all-breed authority, there will always be someone to sing a judge’s praises or cast doubt on her natal legitimacy. Our opinion of a given judge’s competence often comes from how our dogs have fared in his/her ring. While this determination is often subjective, it is more important to consider from whence a judge’s credentials have come. When a judge has spent many years 26 Dog News

as a breeder, distinguishing him/herself as a source of superlative animals, an exhibitor can feel safe in seeking out the valuable opinion of an acknowledged authority. How often do we see ads calling attention to the fact that one’s successful dog has made a hotly contested win under a breeder-judge? Surely this is something to be proud of. But then there are the other ones. Consider those judges who have purchased okay dogs, turned them over to professional handlers to campaign for them after which those dogs are often never seen or heard from again. Such judges may have never owned or bred anything better than a finishable animal. Now consider that these same judges are conferring points, wins and titles on other dogs far and wide. Scary! A win or a title should be only as good as the authority it comes from. Surely, we can never attach the same prestige to a win made under a judge without deep connection to a breed, but we cannot seriously expect every judge to be fully immersed in every breed for which he or she is approved. The long history of the dog sport makes reference to many iconic judges, but if you were to discuss some of these with veteran fanciers who knew them and showed under them, you might find that, just as today, not everyone thought they were all wonderful all the time. This should come as no surprise. The celebrated judges of the past were all human and so subject to the same human frailty that brands us all. The literature of the dog sport is filled with references to those who have an “eye for a dog.” This elusive, mysterious quality was most often found among all-rounders, but was not limited to them. A professional handler with an eye could always find a headliner; then of course she usually had to find a backer. When it all fell into place, it was the stuff of dog show history. There has been no shortage of dogs of great potential where it did not all fall into place. In those instances someone’s dream

failed to materialize even though the dog had solid potential, one or more components kept the dog from scaling the heights of dog show celebrity. However in the dog game, disappointment is an old story. The credentials of a gifted breeder are not the only high road to acclaim in the dog fancy. For many, the club route is often most effective. Those who are blessed with effective communication skills, who work well with others and know how to get the maximum effort from those with whom they collaborate, can go far on the club route.

W

e have distinguished dog clubs flourishing today that owe their sterling reputations to dedicated fanciers with the drive and vision to stage not just a dog show, but an event. While these movers and shakers find the greatest application of their talents in mounting great shows, they might not excel equally as breeders or handlers. This is to be understood; in every club there is the need for ticket takers and coffee pourers. Each of us has our own skill set and it is the standout club’s wise implementation of all those talents among its membership that makes for a successful effort and a job well done. The outstanding credentials of a successful club will, hopefully, result in memorable shows year after year. In turn, the reputation of such clubs will result in the assembly of first class judging panels. These will, in turn, draw the top show dogs from near and far. As the base of all these combined efforts it is the credentials that make the difference in the quality of our shows and the lasting impression they will have on all who participate in them. So, credentials come in many forms. It remains for us to evaluate them and to decide which are most meaningful to us as a fancy. And, as always, thank you for reading.

Just A Ribbon? I was watching the breed judging at Westminster on streaming video this year (technology is wonderful). I think my favorite part during every breed was when the judge handed out the rosettes. Seeing handlers of all ages, male and female, with their dogs, and the dogs wagging their tails and looking up at them for a pat or to see what was coming next. It made me feel so good to watch them. I was thinking that dog show detractors who make fun of us for doing all this for “just a ribbon” really don’t get it. It’s not about a ribbon at all.

30 Dog News

By Carlotta Cooper

W

e live in a time when schools and teams give out trophies just for participating. Clubs and teams are criticized if they don’t let everyone in, or allow everyone to play. Schools with honor rolls are criticized for singling out students who are high achievers for praise. Winning is frowned upon these days in favor of being nice and having a good time. It doesn’t matter if someone is mediocre. You’re not supposed to hurt someone’s feelings by pointing it out or mentioning their deficiencies. But at a dog show, at least at Westminster, when you get that ribbon, you know that you’ve earned it. You and your dog are the best. It means something. No one gives you that piece of fabric just for participating or showing up. You and your dog have to be worthy. Some dogs, some owners or handlers, may only get one chance to go to Westminster, making the experience that much more important on the day. Of course there’s sportsmanship. There’s camaraderie. There’s friendship and good fellowship at dog shows. But there is also fierce competition. As there should be. Sometimes we forget that dog shows are about selecting the very best dogs we possibly can in each breed to continue our bloodlines into the future. As dog breeders, that’s one of the most important things we do in the world of purebred dogs, right along with raising healthy, happy dogs, and placing puppies in the right homes. Those flimsy ribbons earned at dog shows are emblematic of all that we do and all that we strive for in our sport. A ribbon represents hours waiting by the whelping box, raising puppies, the ups and downs with a youngster, and all the time spent training, bathing, and grooming dogs. It speaks of all the days you packed up your vehicle after work and headed for a show, spending countless hours on the road with your dog in all kinds of weather. That ribbon hints at moments in the ring when you won and other times when you buried your face in your dog’s neck and cried tears of frustration over losing. So when the judge hands someone that rosette at Westminster, it’s more than a fancy ribbon. It means much more than people who don’t like dog shows can understand. It’s not about the ribbon at all. It’s about you and your dog and everything you’ve been through together to finally reach your goals. It’s a crowning achievement. It doesn’t matter if people who mock dog shows understand. There will always be people who mock dog shows and dog breeders and our bond with animals. There are plenty of fanciers who know exactly how it feels when the judge hands you that ribbon. Besides, your dog knows everything you’re feeling, and that’s what really matters.

There is hardly a question that the moving of breed judging

to the Piers from the Garden has resulted in a more relaxed daytime attitude for dogs and exhibitors alike. The shuttle service between the Garden and the Piers too works out quite well with a few glitches--primarily with regard to the waiting time loading the shuttles notwithstanding the fact that 11 shuttles are used. The weather was quite cold and despite the incredible job Harry Miller’s Staff did handling the situation together with the Westminster and Pier Staff there were fragile moments I am told. Most everyone handled the glitches with good humor, certainly this was the case when-

ever we used the shuttles but there of course is always the odd exception, which makes it uncomfortable for everyone. Dog people can be very demanding using their concern for their dogs as the excuse when the reality in all too many instances is that the ‘princess’ belief is truly the prevailing factor. The escalators to Pier 92 were in service this year as opposed to last when the Sandy factor entered the picture and caused some major delays but this year if anything it was a comparative snap traveling between both locations due to the elevators and escalators being operational. The heating system at the Piers could use a bit of refining as it seemed difficult to adjust certain areas to meet the needs of the dogs and people involved. Concession ar-

eas tended to be too hot and certain benching and grooming areas too cold. Solved basically from last year’s initial run were the food lines as additional stations were either added or expanded particularly at Pier 92. The quality of the food is another story but I will say the breakfasts looked quite appetizing. Of course the Staff at the Piers is amazingly courteous-almost too courteous due to the demands of certain exhibitors but everyone seemed to be handled by the Staff with aplomb and in certain instances more dignity than they may have deserved. Sean and Tom are an incredible team and we in dogs are lucky to have them running together with the entire Westminster crew this prestigious and meaningful dog show event. Of course the behind people of Florence Foti and David Frei are invaluable to the operation as well and together there is no doubt in my mind that they represent the most progressive and far thinking dog show club organization possible in the world. ing escapes them on any level--they are totally talkable to no matter the time nor the situation and will listen to suggestions and advice usually no matter what the situation. Crowds at the Piers looked enormous, which brings up the next topic of this report, early conditions and the Agility experience. or those of you who may have wondered F where Gene and I were during the days before the Piers Friday we were at 96 begin-

ning to set up one of the two booths for Westminster. As a service to our clients this year we decided to have space representation at both Piers, which really worked out ideally for us. It just annoys the hell out of me the way one of the monthlies which won’t spend the money to have booth representation sneaks into the Piers its publication and hands it out in the Working and Herding areas. But that’s Continued on page 50

of the dog fancy were All eyes on The Westminster Kennel Club and all of its accompanying

festivities in New York this past week, but that didn’t slow down the avalanche of canine legislation efforts across the county, including right here in the Big Apple itself. While some 3,000+ dogs and their handlers and owners were setting up camp in and around Manhattan, the New York City Council voted unanimously to create a citywide database of animal abusers, overriding former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s veto. As a result, anyone who has been convicted of animal abuse will now be prohibited from having contact with animals for at least five years and all shelters, breeders and pet stores in New York City will be required to look up prospective pet owners on the abuser registry before selling an animal or facilitating an adoption. The idea of creating animal abuser registries, akin to sex offender registries, has been catching on nationwide. Perhaps such a law will also help stem dogfighting rings, as violators often scout shelters to find potential fighting dogs as well as bait dogs. One wonders when such a movement will be also be afoot to set guidelines for online advertisements such as those found on craigslist.com that deal in the sale or transfer of animals in order to help put an end to this bloodsport. Any attempt to corral and prevent abusers from engaging in such vile, despicable activities must be explored. Animal abuse is reprehensible and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, as these types of crimes are often harbingers of other violent crimes against humans. Any law that seeks to protect dogs and the general public demands the support of all and these efforts should be monitored closely and implemented elsewhere should they prove to be effective. Last month I reported on the progress being made on the canine legislation front regarding the issue of breed-specific legislation (BSL). This encouraging trend is further supported by current efforts in several state legislatures. In Georgia, House Bill 409 would prohibit counties, municipalities and local authorities from banning the sale or ownership of any specific breed of dog. This provision was carried over from the 2013 session and supporters remain hopeful that it will pass in 2014. In Maryland, House Bill 422 would also prohibit counties and municipalities from enacting laws prohibiting ownership of specific breeds based solely

on the dog’s “breed, type or heritage”. In addition, the bill states that a homeowner or tenant may not be prohibited from owning a specific breed of dog, or be evicted or denied occupancy because of the breed of dog they own. However, a very important distinction is made in that the bill does not prohibit landlords from restricting ownership of all dogs or of dogs declared dangerous under Maryland law. The bill is taking the proper stance that it is the deed of the dog that should be considered and not the breed when identifying dangerous dogs and is taking the necessary precautions to protect dogs, owners and landlords while addressing the issue of responsible ownership in the process. This bill is scheduled to be heard by the Judiciary Committee on February 20 so all in favor of responsible dog ownership and fair legislation are urged to weigh in with their thoughts ASAP. House Bill 775 was introduced in Vermont on January 31 and it would prohibit municipalities from banning certain breeds of dogs. It’s currently pending in the House Government Operations Committee. Similarly, in the state of Missouri, House Bill 1116, which would also prohibit municipalities from enacting breed-specific laws, is currently pending in the House General Laws Committee. Moving west, Senate Bill 75 in South Dakota would prohibit local governments from enacting, maintaining, or enforcing regulations on certain dog breeds. The bill passed the Senate last Tuesday, February 4, and is expected to be assigned to a House committee shortly. In Utah, House Bill 97 was introduced on February 4 and is awaiting committee assignment. This bill would prohibit municipalities from adopting or enforcing any breed-specific rule, policy or ordinance and also declares any current breedspecific rules and policies void. Finally, a bill pending in the House Judiciary Committee in the state of Washington, House Bill 2117, would amend the state’s dangerous dog law and prohibit local governments from banning possession of a particular breed or declaring a specific breed of dog to be dangerous or potentially dangerous. While these are all truly encouraging signs, serious concerns and challenges remain on the BSL front. An ordinance was introduced in Madison, WI that would require all “pit bulls” over the age of five months be spayed or neutered. There are exemptions allowed, including for those “pit bulls” that are show dogs, which shows the ignorance of those drafting the ordinance, as it defines “pit bulls” as “any dog that is an American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier or any mix breed dog exhibiting these distinguished characteristics that conform to the standards established by the AKC or the UKC for any of these breeds.” Anyone wishing to possess an unaltered pit bull

would have to register the dog and be in compliance with a set of requirements that state in part, “The pit bull must participate in at least one conformation dog show sanctioned in writing by the ADBA, AKC or UKC, every three hundred sixty-five day period.” The AKC does not recognize the “pit bull” as a breed and therefore these dogs will not be competing in any AKC conformation shows. There is so much that is troubling to dog owners, especially champions of the ‘bully breeds’, in the Madison, WI proposal. The ordinance claims there is an overpopulation problem of these breeds in the city and that this is having a “negative impact on the health and well-being of the dogs themselves, as well as the health and safety of Madison residents.” Additionally, it states that of the 15 dogs declared dangerous last year, 14 of them “involved the pit bull breed,” 21% of all cases of dogs running at large involved a pit bull breed, 48% of cases of abandoned dogs involved pit bulls and 34% of all cases of aggressive dogs involved the pit bull breed. It doesn’t say what percentage of cases incorrectly identified these “pit bull breeds” or how that determination was made but it sure sounds like Madison, WI has an irresponsible ownership problem and it would do well to enforce animal control laws such as leash laws and implement the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen program to teach owners how to properly train and socialize their dogs. BSL is expensive to implement and has proven to be an ineffective measure in addressing dangerous dog policies. Many states and municipalities have repealed BSL after learning this costly lesson, as have the Netherlands and Italy, which saw its lists of banned breeds grow to over 90 before it realized its mistake. The exceptions to the mandatory spay/neutering of “pit bulls” in Madison, WI include if “The pit bull is a working or retired police dog;” and if “The pit bull is a nationally certified search and rescue dog;” It begs the question, would the police or any search and rescue organization risk their own safety or the safety of others if these breeds of dogs were inherently dangerous? If the proposed ordinance weren’t so serious a condemnation of these breeds with such far-reaching and permanent consequences it would be downright laughable. It’s a complete contradiction: unless the dog is a superhero, then off with its testicles. It sounds like something out of the Dark Ages. It’s time that the Common Council of the City of Madison was enlightened about the ineffectiveness of BSL and the injustices of breed profiling.

Committee on docking, cropping and dewclaw removal has been working with national clubs - whose standard contained a disqualification for docking, cropping or dewclaw removal, or had it as a requirement in their standard - to update their breed standards. As a result, the following breed standard amendments have been made, as approved at the December 2013 Board Meeting, and are effective as of January 01, 2014.

Publish for Comment: Proposed Breed Standard Amendments Re: Docking, Cropping and Dewclaw Removal For several years, tail docking, ear cropping and dewclaw removal has been a topic at the forefront of purebred dog discussions. The declarations by various provincial veterinary regulators that practitioners within their jurisdiction can no longer provide these services has sparked some angst for many active CKC members. At the same time, legislative and societal changes dictate a need to accommodate those that choose not to crop, dock or remove dewclaws - including many who wish to participate in CKC events. It is about providing options. Therefore, the CKC is reaching out to breeders and owners of breeds listed below that do not have a national breed club, to solicit feedback on proposed changes to docking, cropping and dewclaw removal. how the world operates sometimes. Then on Saturday we attended the first time ever Agility Masters held at Westminster which was fun, educational and gratifying both from the sport’s standpoint and in helping to serve the general interest of John Q Public in AKC’s value and worth to the dog on a general basis. Over five thousand spectators during the day on Saturday with a full house on Saturday eve as well. With fewer than 10% of the 250 entered mixed breeds I do not understand the uproar over the Big W or AKC permitting them to compete but I guess in certain circles its fodder for the unusual or different sort of occurrences which break long-standing conditions. Of course AKC Agility has been doing this for years but it was a first for the Big W. Dog Writers was held on Friday and our own Sharon Pflaumer won the big $1,500 prize for her story of Dog Napping--justly so too as far as I am concerned. Sunday was back to the Piers to receive the Westminster issue, which could not be delivered on Saturday due to restrictions put on the venue due to event activities of Saturday. That’s why the Westminster issue was not at the hotels and other specialties although D and the issue of January 31 were in most places. Sunday night was an early dinner with friends getting us ready for the next two big days and nights. onday back to the Piers bright and early at 7 M am where our two booth spaces were located. Was extremely impressed with the new Westminster

merchandise space presented for the first time with all sorts of fun sports clothes on display. For your information more DOG NEWS AND D magazines were sold and given away at our two booths at the Piers than ever before in our history of having a booth at the Garden. That’s exposure to the right people at the right time, wouldn’t you think? As for the Monday breed results I thought there were a number of unexpected results in two or three breeds, which would have major impacts on the Hound Group results and change things around a bit while the other three Groups went pretty much according to Hoyle although some sever challenges were beaten back in most every instances in other groups. The class dog entries were somewhat down this year as compared to last, which could have been attributable to several factors including change of specialty locations, expenses of keeping dogs for so long a time in New York City, judging panels and the like. The downtown trip to the Garden produced the first Group of the evening. It was awarded to the very respectful and impressive Bloodhound, which had a very strong year in 2013. He is a comparatively young exhibit who should be heard from for two or three years more to come. He was pushed hard in the breed by an older bitch I thought whilst the other Group placements were all seasoned strong representatives of their breed. Beaten in their breeds were two very strong exhibits whose presence may Continued on page 77

ESTMINSTER WEEKEND… started Friday evening with the annual cocktail party hosted by TONI & MARTIN SOSNOFF at their Manhattan apartment. All the swell heads (and some swollen) were there. It was nice to see BOB FLANDERS, longtime partner of the late WALTER GOODMAN. BOB has planned a celebration of WALTER’S life on April 5th in Miami. Among some of the guests were GAYLE BONTECOU, CEIL RUGGLES, BETH DOWD, PATRICIA HEARST SHAW, JODY LONGMIRE, DAVE BERREY, IRIS LOVE, ANNE RADICE, SCOTT SOMMER, DENNIS MCCOY, RANDY GARREN, JACKIE BEAUDOIN, FRANCO LICCIARDI, POLLY & BOB SMITH, MARY & BOB INDEGLIA, DICK MEEN, JOHN REEVENEWSOM, SHIRLEY LIMOGES, JEAN HETHERINGTON, ELLEN CHARLES, WENDELL SAMMET, TIM BRAZIER, VICKY HOLLOWAY, KATHY MENAKER, BETH SWEIGART, PETER GREEN, STEVE GLADSTONE, JAN RITCHIE, HELEN & BOB STEIN, CINDY & DAVID VOGELS, TAFFE & BILL MCFADDEN, TARA & JD ROWELL, SHARON & DAVID NEWCOMB, CAROL GROSSMAN, ANN VIKLUND, DR. PAUL & CANDY CACCIOLO, JANET ALLEN, ROB RHEIN, TAMMY & SEAN MCCARTHY, TAMMY WILCOX, GERI KELLY, CHUCK WOODS, JERRY ZIPPER, TINA TRUESDALE, DOUG JOHNSON, JAMIE HUBBARD, CATHY & VINCENT GROSSO and dozens more. Then for most of the assembled guests, it was off to the AL HIRSCHFELD THEATRE to attend a performance of the multiple Tony award winning musical KINKY BOOTS. A performance, I might add, that you should not miss. Following the performance there was a late night dinner at the RUSSIAN TEA ROOM. As this was the first Theatre Benefit dinner 54 Dog News

in over twenty-five years that was not organized and attended by RON MENAKER (although he did arrange for the theatre tickets) there were some changes. Not having RON at the helm, there was a last minute rush to get some of the cast members to attend the dinner as had been done in years past. DENNIS SPRUNG prevailed on KAREN LEFRAK who made a call or two (it helps when you own a Monopoly board full of property in Manhattan) and low and behold we were seated with leading lady ANNALEIGH ASHFORD and her dresser MEGAN BOWEN. Scattered at other tables were several other talented cast members seated with the likes of PAT SCULLY, MARI-BETH O’NEILL, JOHNNY SHOEMAKER (who could easily pass as one of the cast members), JEN & RICKY KRIEGER, NENNA & GEIR FLYCKT-PEDERSEN, ANGIE LLOYD, ERNESTO LARA, JOAN KEFELI, ALAN KALTER, PAT CRUZ, SAM MCDONALD, JANET YORK, NANCY & MIKE SHAW, LARRY CORNELIUS, GINA DINARDO, SHEILA & TONY DINARDO, VICTOR MALZONI, JR., KIM & TONY CALVACCA, VIKKI OELERICH, NAN KRAMER, PHIL BOOTH, ROBIN GREENSLADE and AMY & ANDREW GREEN. The other big change, other than RON’S organizing the event, was leaving the 21 CLUB and moving the dinner to the RUSSIAN TEA ROOM, a decision which left me and continues to leave me cold. But in spite of that, I thoroughly enjoyed the show and seeing friends from around the country who managed to travel to New York in spite of the weather. One very noticeable absence was SIR JOHN SPURLING. JOHN (his company PETPARTNERS, the pet

insurance company, underwrites the entire evening) had to cancel at the last minute due to the snowstorm that hit New York and the promise of a second storm that would have detained his return to London where he has royal obligations. Maybe it was best he missed the event, because the selection of the Russian Tea Room by the powers that be at the American Kennel Club was not a crowd favorite. If it were me, I’d be on the phone reserving the private dinning room at 21 for after next year’s theatre benefit today. Saturday night, while the televised Masters Agility Championship at Westminster competition was taking place to a standing room only crowd, the Westminster Kennel Club hosted a ringside cocktail party to celebrate this inaugural event. Cheering the talented canine entertainment, both pure and “American” bred, were club honchos SÈAN MCCARTHY with his wife TAMMY, TOM BRADLEY, PETER VAN BRUNT, ED HERSHEY, NONIE & RINK REYNDERS, SARI TIETJEN, JEFF PEPPER, DAVID HADDOCK, BILL SECORD, SANDY BISHOP, CYNTHIA STEBBINS, DOTTIE COLLIER, who is becoming quite the photographer, PAM BEALE, SUSAN & DENNIS SPRUNG, TERRY HUNDT, ELLIOTT WEISS, GAY GLAZBROOK, ELLIOT MORE, LUC BOILEAU, CHUCK WINSLOW, PATTY KEENAN, HEIDI MARTIN, BETTY LEININGER, EDD BIVIN, LYNN EGGERS, PAT LAURANS, TERRY STACY, LISA CROFT ELLIOTT, CARRIE RUSSELL-SMITH, all in all a great success for Westminster and by association a great success for the pure bred dog community…. and now onto the show.

AN INTERESTING GARDEN AND PIERS, A FULFILLING WIN...

M re Continued FROM page 50

or may not have changed some of the results but certainly the overall depth in hounds was illustrated by the strength of this group itself even without some of the strong breeds exhibits. While I would not say the Toy Group was a walk for the Min Pin it was certainly the overwhelming favorite and as usual showed its little heart out in what I considered to be one of the stronger Groups (as usual) of the two-day affair. Non-Sporting was the delicious White Standard Poodle bitch followed closely I thought by a Tibetan Spaniel which is as cute as can be whilst the fourth group to be judged on that night, the Herding Group, probably produced the biggest surprise of the evening as Cardigan Welsh Corgi said by some to be the greatest Cardigan they have ever seen topped three exhibits

much better known to the crowd of aficionados than was she. Indeed I would have to say that her Group win was the surprise of the two-day group winners as she upset many a topwinning exhibit. onday evening was the very well attended Take the Lead M party and we were all ready for bed after a very long day except for certain people known to party the night long,

which was certainly the case in many an instance. Tuesday morning bloomed a bit too early for me but was back at the Piers by 8am where once again a certain amount of unpredictability reared its head in the breed rings although not to the extent of the upsets which occurred the day before. The Sporting Group, which had a good overall representation of new exhibits and seasoned ones as well, was awarded to the Number One Sporting dog of 2013, the Irish Water Spaniel bitch, while the PWD a strong favorite I thought to repeat his Working Group win of last year did so although I thought closely pressed by a Mastiff from Texas, which is fairly new to the show circuit. Terriers were awarded to the Number One Exhibit of 2013 the Wire Fox terrier,, which interestingly was co-owned by the same person as the number 2 placing terrier dog, Victor Malzoni, Jr. I can’t recall the last time someone owned or co-owned the number one and number two placing dogs in a Group at the Garden. It probably has happened before I just can’t remember when. Best in Show now had its line-up set and Judge Betty Leininger you know had her work cut out for her! I cannot say I was overly surprised by the result. After all, Sky the WFT was the Number One Dog All-Breeds last year! What did surprise me a bit, I don’t know why, was the intensity of the competition and how for the first time in years I thought any one of the seven could prevail. That extra fine touch of Gabriel Rangel certainly helped as he handled the bitch to perfection as I may add did all the other handlers as well. Whether or not I agreed with the decision will go to the grave with me but I can tell you I would have been hard pressed to have to have been the arbiter that’s for sure. On a fashionista side I thought Jackie Stacy’s simplicity of a plain black cocktail dress was perfect and the BIS Judge as per usual made her own outstanding fashion statement. I thought it was a fine two-day event which continued and expanded the traditions it has already establish as the 138th Westminster equaled if not surpassed the shows of its past assuredly continuing the sport’s growth in the future. Job well done for all!!!!
