THE DISASTER IN JAPAN

These pages have inquired of the American Kennel Club as to whether anything has been done to help our Japanese counterparts in the dog world to assist them with their dogs--show or otherwise. Dennis Sprung has informed us that indeed calls and e-mails have been sent to the Japan Kennel Club on several occasions and that as of the writing of this Editorial no response has been received. There is truly little else to do in this area as a report in THE NEW YORK TIMES indicates that “many groups are raising money without knowing how it will be spent - or even needed”. The Japanese Red Cross for example has said repeatedly since the day after the disaster that it does not want or need outside assistance. Despite this the American Red Cross per the TIMES has raised at least $34 million (keeping 9 percent of any monies raised for itself through this campaign!) and sent $10 million to Japan so far. A response to the donation was expressed by the Red Cross’s international governing body in Switzerland expressing gratitude for the support with the following caveat--”At present, the Japanese society (Red Cross) is not launching a national or international appeal, but expressions of solidarity in the form of unearmarked financial contributions would be greatly received”. In the way of canine assistance the only thing that Japan has asked for so far is some specialized search-and-rescue teams with dogs. It would appear that in Japan the work for money is exclusively with other governments and not international charities. Keep a wary eye on charities that are aggressively soliciting donations around this disaster is the advice from GiveWell, a web site that researches charities. We all want to help out in this gravest of disasters but try not to be swept up in the frenzy of fund-raising unless you directly understand and believe in the organization sponsoring the solicitations. If you know or hear of people directly in need you may want to re-act more aggressively than in responding to organizations that have sprung up in the direct wake of the earthquake/tsunami disaster. It is understood Animals Asia on its web site has started an appeal for moneys as well. This is a trusted organization with which these pages are familiar but the question still remains as to whether without a formal appeal for assistance we should so react. Those are individual considerations for sure.

THE CRUFTS SPECTACULAR

The 120th presentation of the dfs/Crufts Dog Show event is now history and what a production it was! This is a massive and complicated event that is a study in sophistication and cosmopolitan showmanship. Its organizers and the people who run it, which of course are The Kennel Club in the UK, must be congratulated on every imaginable level. It has its detractors as does any great event but these come primarily from people who either do not understand why the event is presented in the first place or from people who are jealous of its continued successes. That is not to overlook the sometimes confusion for the neophyte attendee and the difficulty which can arise in maneuvering the over five gigantic halls which house the project. Nonetheless this is as inclusive a dog event as presented in the world with the dog show conformation aspect particularly enlightening. The British championship is one of the most difficult to attain in the world and hopefully it will remain that way notwithstanding those in the UK so anxious to dilute the existing standards of excellence to attain championship status. True it is that Group level judging can be wanting at Crufts but this is probably due to the British system which divides its 30 or so Championship All-Breed Shows into three or four days each. This does result in extremely large entries for shows in the UK but all too many people attend only “their day of breed and group competition” thereby limiting their exposure to other breeds and groups when they apply to judge. Add onto that factor the control each parent club has over its membership and the subsequent awarding of CC’s and you have a system in need of redirection. The interesting thing in that matter is their GC has the ability to make these kinds of changes basically without accountability to anyone else. Unfortunately in the States our leaders are thwarted by an outdated Constitution and Bylaws badly in need of updating which cannot be done due to the antediluvian laws under which AKC is forced to operate. In any event you can’t beat Crufts and you should go there if you are the least bit interested in dogs at all.

THE GOVERNANCE QUANDARY

The revamping of the manner in which AKC is run has been a hot topic for years among concerned AKC watchers. Sari Tietjen in her column this week (and many people regard Mrs. Tietjen as one of experts in the field in matters AKC) revisits this problem once again as have these pages and other writers as well. While these pages are in basic agreement with what she has to suggest there are two areas we would like to expand upon. We would broaden the appointment of a Commission to study this problem from a membership of Members of the Fancy only to include a Constitutional law firm experienced in updating not for profit corporations as they enter the 21st Century. Additionally we would make the recommendations binding in advance such that the Delegate Body and or the Board cannot veto the needs of reform. Certainly input would be asked of all elements but unless the Committee is charged with the power TO CHANGE past experience indicates failure in advance no matter the recommendations since existing power structures will be threatened. Unfortunately these pages have seen these kinds of ideas thrown out before and ignored and candidly one would expect the same thing to happen again. Philosophically it may read fine to certain people but practically it probably would never happen. What can happen practically however is a realignment of the existing Member Clubs into a broader representation for all clubs. Right now there are over 600 member Clubs with another 180 in the wings!!! And that does not include Agility, which of course has no representation whatsoever. What we would suggest is the elimination of specialty clubs that have parent club representation. And further eliminate all-breed clubs as being a member club if their membership is say 25 members or less. Okay, we’re prepared and ready for the onset!!!

THAT HSUS CONFERENCE

Well the controversy about what amounts to actual versus perceived support for the so-called HSUS scientific conference in late April continues. As many of you are aware, when the conference was first announced it was supported and to be presented by both HSUS and the RSPCA in the UK. The speakers and the program was totally one sided with only known critics and detractors of the purebred dog on the program. With the heading being the Paradox of the Pedigree Dog and the main emphasis to be discussions relative to the health of the purebred dog, its purpose was obvious - destroy the pedigree dog. These pages were told that the purpose of this so-called scientific conference was to help establish the legitimacy of HSUS as many of its critics have complained and rightly so that the organization was basing its appeals purely upon an emotional rather than factual basis. It is true that through the efforts of certain people Fran Smith was added in an effort to present a more diverse panel but further research indicated possible acts of chicanery, which were either innocently or deliberately done and then changed. And through other offices attempts were successfully made to broaden the program by inviting AKC’s CHF to be a speaker as well. The organization originally accepted and then turned down the invitation. Frankly, good arguments can be made for and against CHF’s participation. One of the speakers from the beginning was to be Jemima Harrison, the producer of PDE, which is to be aired there as well. From the viewpoint of these pages that is a killer altogether. Indeed these pages have now turned down an invitation based on Ms. Harrison being a speaker and PDE being aired. Aside from the confusion she attempted to cause at Crufts in the Press Area, which was handled so well by Caroline Kisko, she was quoted in the March 6 London MAIL as saying the following: “It is astonishing but true that the majority of breeders would rather have sick dogs than allow a single drop of foreign blood to taint their breeds”. Said with reference to the LUA dispute. Nonetheless these are scurrilous, untrue, unscientific remarks that have persuaded us to decline to even attend the conference unless Mrs. Harrison’s invitation is withdrawn! Whether our presence would have been perceived as supporting the conference is questionable since the only purpose we would’ve had in attending was to see that our position was fairly presented and reported upon. However in light of this speaker’s latest attributions there is no way we would think of attending.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

If terms limits could be so overwhelmingly approved in September of 2010 how could the Delegates re-elect two people who served on the Board while defeating the third six short months later. It seems so inconsistent unless of course the Delegates were totally disenchanted with both the people running from the floor and those nominated by the nominating committee, too! If that is the case is the core of the Delegate Body so weak or disinterested that it is impossible to find qualified or interested people to serve on the Board? If that is the case why not open the Board to non-dog people to present a diversity and aptitude in business affairs, which must be lacking in that representative body for sure.

INSIDE THE SPORT

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED “Expect the unexpected.” This was the safety advice given me by my Driver’s Education Teacher in high school all those years ago. And the subject of safety is still as meaningful today as ever. When we experience a crisis that tests our inner strength as well as our readiness to deal with it, we find out how courageous and dedicated dog people really are.

S

uch a test occurred two weeks ago at the Santa Clara Valley Kennel Club show in Northern California in the form of a devastating fire in the van of California handler Gustavo Molinari that could have ended up even worse than it did. With several dogs in the van, only the quick response of Josh Washnesky, assistant to Handler of the Year Bruce Schultz, in noticing smoke and alerting others to the horror saved the dogs. According to Jeff Heim it was a matter of seconds that made the difference in life or death for those in the van. Only the quick reaction of Josh, Jeff, Dave Muro and others on the scene with fire extinguishers made it possible to get the dogs out of the vehicle and prevent total losses. Gustavo himself was in the ring when the call went out and sprinted to his rig to join in the rescue. As it was, one animal was mercifully humanely euthanized due to the severity of its burns at the veterinary hospital where all went for treatment. The fire department reported that the fire started either in the fuse panel or wiring leading to it under the dashboard on the driver’s side of the van. Some of the heroes who saved the lives of the dogs received minor burns on their hands along with a horrible memory they will never forget. The van was burned to its frame. After such a terrible experience, Heim was kind enough to share some safety advice for us all regarding fire extinguishers. First of all, some of this equipment which people grabbed from their own rigs and ran to assist with was either faulty or those involved did not know how to use the equipment. Secondly, recreational vehicle manufacturers and others often provide lesser equipment designed only to satisfy minimum legal requirements instead of the best, largest and most userfriendly products. Since vehicular fires are so dangerous, dog people are advised to buy the best product, learn how to use it and have your local fire marshals check your equipment for service on an annual basis. This same advice would hold true for fire extinguishers in the home and/or kennel. Fortunately, most of the fire extinguishers at this fire did work and contributed greatly to the rescue of the dogs. We all know the tragic summer stories of dogs and even children left unsupervised to die in overheated vehicles on hot days. Dog people must constantly be on CONTINUED ON PAGE 60

TheWayItIs TheWay ItIs

For years now, those following the governance of the American Kennel Club have been saying that the whole governing structure needs to be revamped and brought into the 21st Century. What we currently have is archaic, cumbersome, and obsolete.

F

rom the Delegate Body to the Board of Directors, the configuration needs to be changed to reflect a complex and diverse “club of clubs” that did not exist when the AKC was established almost 127 years ago. AKC’s founding fathers had no idea that their little organization of thirteen clubs and no money (at that time, AKC was subsidized by the Westminster Kennel Club) would metamorphose into a massive operation of over 600 clubs (with hundreds more potentially knocking at the door) and an over $100 Million business. As AKC has evolved, so too has the sport of purebred dogs. Whereas, the original sport consisted of clubs devoted to field trials and conformation, today’s sport encompasses not only field trials and conformation, but also obedience, agility, rally, lure coursing, earthdog, herding and hunting trials and many other events. All of the clubs sponsoring such events should have the opportunity to become member clubs with a voice in the governing of their events, their dogs, and their “mother club” – the AKC. If all these clubs became member clubs, there is a potential for, conservatively thinking, well-over 1000 clubs with representatives to send to the Delegate meetings. This would make the meetings even more unwieldy and unproductive than they are today. With this in mind, steps have to be taken to change the framework of both the Delegate Body and the Board of Directors. What are some of the ideas that should be considered? • Divide the Delegate Body into sections of interest. For example, all-breed clubs would have their own delegate meetings; national parent clubs their own; field trials their own; obedience their own; agility their own and so on. As such, they, as the major stakeholders in that aspect of the sport of purebred dogs, would deliberate on those proposals and matters that concern their section and not be dependent on the whims of others who do not understand their sport. • If a club has multiple areas of interest, it can have its Delegate crossover to the other sections. This can be the same person or a different club member who is versed in that additional area. • Structure the organization so that there is only one Sectional in-person meeting a year at which time matters to be determined by a vote would occur. During the interim, use email and/or closed website for other matters that come before that particular area of interest. • Delegate committee meetings could function via the web – with structured meetings twice a year. During the interim, use email and/or closed website for other matters that come before the committee. • Have each Section elect Delegates to serve on a Board of Representatives – weigh the number of those elected based on the number of event participants. • Since parent clubs cross all sections, give them additional weighed representation on this Board to reflect their importance in all matters coming before the Body as it affects their breeds, in particular, and purebred dogs, in general. • The Board of Representatives would meet twice a year to

By Sari B. Tietjen 18 Dog News

discuss and propose matters. Email and/or website would be used for other issues that might come up in the interim. • Hold one General Assembly meeting a year – this would be a meeting of the Delegates representing all clubs – and would encompass all aspects of the sport of purebred dogs. It could be a weeklong “salute to purebred dogs” with special events, seminars, and discussion groups. • A club with more than one Delegate (due to Section involvement) would have to designate the General Assembly Delegate. • Clubs should be permitted to designate an alternative Delegate if the General Assembly Delegate is unable to attend a G.A. meeting. • A club would be able to designate anyone in good standing with AKC to serve as its Delegate. • Only vote on Bylaw and Rule amendments once a year at the General Assembly meeting. • Have the Board of Representatives elect from amongst themselves those who should serve on what we presently call AKC’s Board of Directors. • The Board of Directors would, in fact, serve as the club’s Executive Committee. • This Executive Committee would be charged with overseeing the “general management of the business and affairs of the AKC . . .” • The Executive Committee would elect the Chairman, Vicechair and other officers of the Club. • The Executive Committee would appoint such other committees as it deems necessary, comprised of individuals throughout the Fancy, to assist it in developing programs and resolving issues. • The Executive Committee would meet monthly and would be limited to twelve members. (The present thirteenth member was only added as a reflection of the times and is really unnecessary in the broad picture.) • Executive Committee meetings (and in fact all meetings) should be webcast and available to those members of member clubs who desire such access.

T

he above are only some suggestions as to how AKC should be restructured to meet its growing pains. There are others that are not listed. The idea is to have members of the Fancy think about the issues facing the AKC and how to resolve them. It is obvious that something needs to be done about its governance. As things stand now, we are just drifting along. The system of our forefathers does not work in today’s world. Will any of the above happen? Not likely unless our current Board and/or Delegate body is willing to step up to the plate and acknowledge the fact that our present structure is not working. The Board needs to appoint a Commission comprised of knowledgeable, experienced, and respected members of the Fancy who recognize the need and are capable and able to sort through the various concepts and ideas to restructure AKC’s governance. To do anything less, is to bow to the status quo and continue the path of sticking one’s head in the sand! Please note:- This column was originally printed almost two years ago (with updates presently added since that time) – what it states remains the same. Nothing has been done to even begin the long process of revamping an antiquated, outmoded, unwieldy club/business model. AKC needs to embrace the future, honor the past and respect the present. It needs to look at the big picture, roll up its sleeves and embark on what will no doubt be a difficult – but necessary task! SBT

How many days did you attend Crufts and what did you think of this year’s show?

JOAN SCOTT I was there for one and a half days. I love Crufts. It is totally different than anything we have in this country and it’s just fun to go there. Negatively, I was unhappy seeing so many undocked tails, which I thought truly hurt the outlines of all the Pembrokes. LIZ TOBIN The greatest show on earth. We were there for three days. JOE VAUDO Three days and I was very happy to be there. MARGERY GOOD I was there most everyday. The best part of Crufts is the opportunity it gives you to see all the marvelous dog people from all over the world who you really don’t get to see that often. ELAINE LESSIG I thought they did a great job considering the harsh economic times in the UK. It was more of a wonderful show for dog people this year and not so much a public happening. I thought Sunday to be a rather quiet day.

BY MATTHEW H. STANDER 22 Dog News

NANCY MARTIN I was there so many days I’m incapable of remembering how many. Everything was fine until Lhasas--not what happened in the ring but out of it! DENNIS SPRUNG I thought it was a fabulous show which had a little bit or a lot of everything for everyone. It was educational, it was fun, it was entertaining. What more can anyone ask for? ANDREW GREEN I was there all four days--it’s a great show impeccably organized. It’s a real tribute to the love affair the British have for their dogs. BETH SWEIGERT I was there four days and think it is the most amazing dog extravaganza one can see--it’s an exciting, fun-filled time for everyone. JENNIFER STEVENS I love Crufts and would go every year if I could and stay for four days or even six days if they decided to extend it. MARIPI WOOLDRIDGE I was bored with this year’s Crufts albeit I only went for a short day and a half.

Veterinary Topics Stirrings of Spring

Although it is still winter in a large area of the country, the geese are flying overhead and it won’t be too long before the Spring peepers start calling. The sight of the first robin is always a harbinger of better days ahead, so we are anxiously scanning the terrain around the house for the first glimpse of our red breasted friends. With warmer weather, plus all the wet grounds, rising rivers and muddy puddles it will be fertile season for the pests that emerge from wherever they have been hiding all winter. Mosquitoes and ticks and fleas are the main disease carrying culprits in most areas of the country. Mosquitoes carry the parasites which may cause heartworm infestation when they attack humans or other animals. Although heartworm disease used to be found primarily in warm, southern climates, it is now almost as prevalent in the northern Midwestern states and in recent years has been found in typically drier states in the West. Ticks come in many varieties, but there are three most commonly associated with disease affecting both humans and animals in the United States. They are the deer tick, the brown dog tick and the American Dog tick. Ticks have very long life spans, many live as long as 20 years under the right conditions. They are members of the Arachnida family, which includes spiders, scorpions and mites. Those most often associated with disease in the United States, the hard shelled ticks, called Ixodidae are the most important. Ticks transmit a variety of infectious agents including erlichiosis, tick paralysis, Rocky Mt. Spotted fever, Lyme Disease, babesiosis, and some other, more exotic infections. Lyme Disease is the most prevalent, now reported in all 50 states, but endemic in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states, upper Midwest and the Northwest, mainly northern California. The causative agent is the deer tick which carries a tiny spirochete named Borrelia burgdorferi. Depending upon the weather, the time of the year which these parasites are most prevalent is May to July. However, variations in temperatures will either deter or encourage them to emerge sooner. In this writer’s experience, any time in the Spring that the temperature rises above 50’F one can expect to find ticks. This is especially true after the frost has left the ground.

BY CONNIE VANACORE 26 Dog News

Lyme Disease can affect multiple organs, including the skin, nervous system, heart, lungs, and joints. Sudden onset of joint pain, lethargy and fever are the most common signs observed. In people a “bulls eye” rash sometimes occurs at the site of the tick attachment, even though the tick may have fallen off and disappeared. Often dogs do not show immediate symptoms of the disease though if an owner sees a tick infestation on the dog, one can assume that it has been infected. The treatment for both dogs and people is a course of antibiotics such as tetracycline or doxycycline. However, sometimes dogs or people can become persistently infected and may require additional treatment over a long period of time. Blood tests are the most accurate means of detecting the presence of the infective agent, as different tick species produce different reactions. Tick control is difficult but spraying around the perimeter of the property in which dogs and people most likely inhabit helps to keep the population down. Keeping vegetation away from fence lines or trimming overhanging branches also helps. Various topical insecticides also can reduce the number of ticks and other parasites which may inhabit the animals. Nothing is fool proof, but with both fleas and ticks, prevention is key. With fleas particularly, environmental control is essential and there are many products available to keep these pests at bay. (Information from Merial, Dog Watch, DVM Newsmagazine, Bayer publications)

Canine Lifetime Health Project

Morris Animal Foundation will begin an ambitious long-term study to identify the risk factors for the development of cancer and other diseases in dogs. Called the Canine Lifetime Health Project, the study projects a 13-year research project to identify the incidence and prevalence of exposure to genetic, nutritional and environmental risk factors for developing cancer, identifying potential biomarkers of cancer and other disease, and ultimately help veterinary clinicians develop guidelines for cancer screening and prevention in dogs. The researchers are seeking to enroll 2,500 Golden Retrievers between 2 and 7 years of age. Pet owners and veterinarians are encouraged to participate. Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Pfizer Animal Health and other similar corporations have committed support for the study. Additional information can be found at http://www.morrisanimalfoundation.org. 10 QUESTIONS ASKED BY LESLIE BOYES OF:

Bergit & Hans

KABEL

38 Dog News

BERGIT: Karlbrume, Germany HANS: Maasluis, Netherlands Reside: Sun Valley, California

What year did you start showing dogs and what breeds were they?

Bergit: 1965-West Highland White Terrier Bruno from the Czech Republic. Hans: 1974-Samoyed Dutch National Specialty.

Which dog no longer being shown would you liked to have shown or owned?

Bergit: The whippet Ch. Brushwood Moxie of Endeavor who was handled by Mandy Clevenger. “Moxie” looked to me like a beautiful showing machine. Hans: The English Samoyed from the ‘80’s Eng. Ch. Jurkur Giungles.

Why do you think most people want to judge?

Bergit: I believe there are as many reasons as there are judges. Hans: To stay in the dog world--for the good or the bad.

Who are your non-dog heros or heroines exclusive of immediate relatives?

Bergit: Lance Armstrong. Hans: Nelson Mandela.

If you could change one thing about your relationship what would it be?

Bergit: To have met Hans earlier in my life. Hans: That there would be more hours in the day to get more things accomplished.

How would you describe yourselves in personal ads?

Bergit: Workaholic who loves what she does and loves life. Hans: Cute and adorable with a stubborn streak.

Do you think there are too many dog shows?

Bergit: No. Hans: No.

Which are your three favorite dog shows?

Bergit: Montgomery County when at Ambler, Great Western and Palm Springs. Hans: Long Beach in December when it was not with Eukanuba, Montgomery at Ambler and the Scottsdale Cluster at the West World.

Do you think there should be a limit on the number of times a dog may be exhibited in a year?

Bergit: No. Hans: No.

How do you react to people flying in and out of shows on the same weekend?

Bergit: When you campaign a top dog you have to figure out if the dog can handle the stresses connected with flying. Hans: I have no objection to the practice unless it is bad for the dog.

Dog News 43

Signs of the Times Lots of things have been happening in the news recently. Whether they’re connected to each other, I’ll let you be the judge, but they seem suggestive to me. For example, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg bought a Puli puppy from a breeder.

T

his was noteworthy for several reasons. It seems that even the super rich are not immune to the playful antics of puppies. You can follow “Beast’s” adventures on his very own Facebook page (of course) where there are lots of pictures of the adorable puppy exploring his home. This purchase was also noteworthy because Mr. Zuckerberg and the breeder both referred to the transfer of the puppy as an “adoption.” YIKES! We know that’s not the right word when money changes hands for a dog, right? I won’t go into a diatribe about the “adoption” word here, mostly because others have beaten me to it, but there has been plenty of howling about the fact that this was not an adoption. Animal rights people have been outraged that Mr. Zuckerberg went to a breeder and paid for a puppy when he could have gotten a puppy from a shelter — though you have to think his odds of finding a Puli puppy in a shelter were slim and none. Others have been more wishywashy about the adoption term, trying to urge us to start accepting this term whenever we place a puppy in a home. Please. Let’s be realistic. We don’t adopt animals. We adopt children and we should never confuse animals with children, no matter how much we may care about our pets. I sort of have problems with using the “adoption” term even when shelters insist on using it for placing pets. And that was before some shelters and rescues started charging breeder prices and selling dogs to people who wanted a pet. So, intentionally or not, Mr. Zuckerberg and his public relations people stepped into a hornets’ nest when they used the “adoption” term. But you have to derive some amusement from the situation. After all, people are using Facebook to criticize Mr. Zuckerberg, which, as a friend pointed out, is great irony. And it means that Mr. Zuckerberg

is making money from ads on Facebook as people criticize his choice of dog. Also of interest recently, the AKC has been taking a beating in the media, especially in Pennsylvania. House Resolution 89, supported by the AKC and other dog organizations, emerged in the Pennsylvania General Assembly in February of this year. “A Resolution directing the Joint State Government Commission to study and review the economic impacts on the regulated community and on the Commonwealth of implementation of the 2008 amendments to the Dog Law and the regulatory standards which were adopted to implement the legislation.” The bill would require the 2008 kennel regulations to be studied for possible revision. The 2008 law has led to over 60 percent of the kennels in the state being forced out of business. Now, animal rights people claim that’s a good thing, but there are far too many stories of law-abiding breeders, rescues, and dog owners who have been harassed by animal control, spcas, and others abusing the dog law in Pennsylvania to let this law stand as it is currently. You have read some of those terrible stories here in DOG NEWS. Not only are there numerous claims that the law is being abused, but with 60 percent of the kennels in the state being forced out of business because they could not afford to make the excessive modifications to their kennels demanded in the 2008 law, the state is suffering from the economic impact of losing millions of dollars in dog-related revenue. As you would imagine, animal rights extremists in the state have been blasting the AKC for backing House Resolution 89, though they are certainly not the only dog organization supporting the resolution. As if that weren’t enough going on, PUPS is back, the Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety Act, H.R. 835 in Congress. This version is virtually identical to PUPS from 2010. It still includes language that would be harmful to people who co-own or jointly own dogs, making them responsible for puppies sold by other parties, even when the dogs were not on their premCONTINUED ON PAGE 76

Dog News 47

THE BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG

“ALPINE PASTURE” DOGS The Swiss farmers in the Canton of Berne during the 18th and 19th centuries had a “help” problem. They needed assistance with their farm chores, help in hauling their dairy products to market and protection for their farms and livestock from marauding predators of both the two-and-four-legged varieties.

H

owtosolvethismulti-faceteddilemma? Hire protection? Too expensive for farmers barely eking out an existence. Get a horse? Again, too costly. Besides, the alpine trails were too steep for a horse to safely navigate and furthermore, they were competition for the sometimes sparse forage that the farmers needed for their cattle and sheep. The solution was to develop a breed of dog that could do all these things and in the bargain, help the farmer move his cattle to and from alpine meadows and pastures. Initially called “Durrbachler,” after an inn where these farm dogs were bought and sold, the breed later became the Bernese Mountain Dog and many of the traits that made the breed attractive to the Swiss farmers are also prized by modern-day competitors in dog sports. “This is a working breed that has a long history of doing a variety of different activities,” said Karyn Beyer, who owns Ch Reflection on the Waterfront CDX RE OAP OJP Can CD Can DD ANDD MDD BDD BMDCA Versatility Dog BMDCA WDX (“Brando.”) “They are willing workers but not obsessive workers. They are happiest when they are with people so if their people want to do something fun and silly and call it ‘performance training,’ that’s great with a Berner. I also know many Berners that are perfectly happy being a family pet and companion.” “Berners are not hardwired to just do ‘one thing.’ In my experience, they enjoy variety much more than endless repetitions of the same activity. Berners are basically

smart, willing dogs that can also be good athletes, depending upon their structural soundness and conditioning, of course,” said Ruth Nielsen who owns Am/Can Ch Brighteye Wakantanka CDX RA OAP OJP NA MDD BNDD Can CD DD AGIS AGN AGNJ AGNJS (“Tonka.”) “Versatility is important because it demonstrates that the dog has the temperament, intelligence and physical structure to be exceptional and since I believe that only exceptional dogs should be bred, having proof of the dog’s versatility is important to me as a breeder. But there is an added bonus in that the dogs love the variety and I think the cross training has important physical and mental benefits for the dog. You have to consider the dog’s structure and Berners are draft dogs which means you have to be mindful of the GCh Ebnets Hired Gun Frm Zanzbern impact that, for example, jumping CD OAP OJP ANDD ANBDD MDD MBDD in agility can have when your dog (“Marshall”), Val Horney’s Bernese is also competitive in the show ring. Mountain Dog demonstrates some of My dogs are also conformation the jumping skill that has caused his trainer to remark that he has the notion champions and this means they that he can fly and spin and twist like an have more substance to get over the FA-18 fighter jet when in reality he is jumps. They have to be taught the more like a 747. correct jumping form and then you have to carefully consider the needs of your dogs when you decide whether to run the dog in regular or preferred agility or even to pursue agility titles at all. The last thing you have to do is run courses in ways that recognize that Berners are big dogs that need more space on courses than smaller, less substantial dogs might,” said Mary-Ann Bowman who owns Ch Kaibab’s Bright Angel UD TD NA NAP NJP VCD1 RA DD BDD, Ch Kaibab’s Enter from the East TDX CD DD, Ch Kaibab’s Anasazi Corn Moon UD AX AXJ TD VCD2 OAP OJP NFP NF RE DD BDD and Ch Kaibab’s Cruising Arcadia TD CD OA NAJ NF RN DD BDD. Because the breed is fairly rare in any dog sport, it is always fun to see a Berner excel in any performance activity, according to Val Horney who owns GCh Ebnets Hired Gun Frm Zanzbern CD OAP OJP ANDD ANBDD MDD MBDD (“Marshall.”) “Having a Berner excel in any sport is always the thrill. I think they surprise many people with their abilities. I think one of the reasons they are CONTINUED ON PAGE 80

Dog News 51

Off The Leash It is March Madness indeed for purebred dog lovers and fanciers, and it has nothing to do with NCAA basketball. The madness stems from an onslaught of legislation that threatens the ability to own and breed dogs responsibly in the U.S. and the constant barrage of messages in all media outlets to adopt dogs from shelters. It’s enough to make one’s head spin, like the mad prophet character Howard Beale in the classic film Network who screams, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!”

O

nly midway through the month of March, the American Kennel Club has already issued 12 legislative alerts on its web site. And from the constant commercials during prime time programming including sporting events —even the televised portions of the Westminster Kennel Club—to the bus shelter ads to the magazine inserts to the banner ads on web sites, the pet adoption message is making the general public feel bad about purchasing a purebred dog. Enough already! How much longer will purebred dog lovers roll over or turn the other cheek? The good news on the legislative front is that dog owners and breeders have been fighting back and winning many of the battles, and that the AKC’s Government Relations Department has been working overtime to keep its constituents up to date and coordinating counterattacks. Just this week it was announced that the West Virginia Legislature had adjourned without taking further action on House Bill 2883, thanks in large part to the phone calls and emails from members of the AKC’s 32 dog clubs in West Virginia and concerned breeders in the state. As written the bill would’ve limited dog ownership and restricted breeding, in addition to placing unnecessary and expensive burdens on responsible breeders. In response, the AKC reports that several clubs and breeders have expressed an interest in forming an AKC federation for West Virginia to have a united coalition in addressing canine legislation. This is exactly the type of proactive action necessary to ensure that the bill doesn’t return unchanged next session. (For further information, contact the AKC’s Government Relations Department at doglaw@akc.org). While also this week in Ohio, all eyes and ears are on the public hearing scheduled by the Ohio House Criminal Justice Committee on House Bill 14. HB 14 seeks to remove the term“pit bull”from the state’s definition of “vicious dog”. It will be interesting to monitor this hearing, as Ohio is currently the only state to have enacted breed-specific legislation statewide. As currently written, Ohio law provides a loose definition of a“pit bull”, which is open to broad interpretation by local animal control officers, and automatically considers any such“pit bull” as vicious. As knowledgeable owners, breeders, handlers, veterinarians and victims of dog attacks are aware, any dog can be vicious or dangerous in the hands of an uneducated, irresponsible owner. BSL simply doesn’t work wherever it’s been enacted— on any level. As for the bombardment of the ‘adopt a shelter dog campaign’ that has been firmly planted in the general public’s mindset, purebred dog lovers need to take their message to the mainstream media that reputable, knowledgeable breeders put years of time, effort and resources into their avocation, not for profit but for the betterment of the health of the purebred dog. A concerted effort must be made to put an end to the myths that mixed breed dogs are healthier, live longer or are less expensive to own than purebreds. Reputable breeders of purebred dogs screen for genetic abnormalities, personally vet potential owners of their puppies and always take them back should the arrangement not work; they do not flood shelters with purebred

dogs as many of these mainstream media messages purport. Are the shills for these campaigns even aware of where shelters get their dogs? Are they aware of the shadowy underworld of interstate and international trafficking of dogs of questionable lineage and health being mass-produced to fill the demand to “adopt a shelter dog”? (Perhaps a “Shelter Dogs Exposed” documentary a la the Pedigree Dogs Exposed program that caused such a riot in the UK is warranted here in the States). Granted, professional actresses and models may look prettier on paper and on television holding a dog than your average handler at a dog show, but do these celebrities du jour understand what purebred dog breeders are all about, or have they ever even been to a dog show, or do they know about the thriving shelter businesses that have sixfigure salaries on the books? Perhaps reputable breeders should recruit a beautiful, recognizable celebrity mouthpiece and maybe then the general public will actually listen.

his past Tuesday’s edition of the New York Daily News contained an eight-page color insert in its centerfold, an independent supplement titled Pet Health. It was produced by an organization called Mediaplanet, whose stated mission is “to create new customers for our advertisers by providing readers with high-quality editorial content that motivates them to act”. On the cover was the beautiful model/actress Beth Stern (nee Ostrosky, wife of shock jock Howard Stern) advocating for pet adoption, while gracing the inside cover of the insert was none other than Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the HSUS, with the pull quote, “We’ve always been connected to animals and today we’re closer to our pets than ever.” Included in the accompanying article is this statement: “Last year The Humane Society of the United States helped to keep over 3500 pets in their homes.” Remember, Mediaplanet’s mission is to “create new customers” and “motivate them to act”, something the HSUS is already adept at, considering it has an operating budget of over $100 million. Such prominent displays keep people acting —and donating—to the HSUS, which further feeds the ‘adopt a shelter dog campaign’, regardless of the fact that less than one-half of one per cent of the HSUS’s operating budget goes to hands-on animal shelters. That same evening, the American Kennel Club was an answer to one of the puzzles on Wheel of Fortune as part of its pet lovers week. Too bad there wasn’t a message about the wonderful accomplishments of the AKC’s Humane Fund or the AKC’s Canine Health Foundation. These shows are taped in advance, of course, and there was a plug at the end of the program for the searchdogfoundation.org, featuring a dog and handler along with clips of them looking for survivors in the debris of the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. It would’ve been nice if viewers were made aware that the AKC is not just the answer to a game show puzzle, but a vital, important force in protecting the rights of all dog owners, promoting the health and well-being of all dogs—not just purebred dogs— and in humanitarian efforts as well. The AKC’s CAR program has already set up a fund-raising drive to help the victims of last week’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan and since its inception following 9/11 has donated more than $3 million to search and rescue teams and for companion animal relief during natural disasters. But what are the odds that the mainstream media will deem that ‘pretty enough’ to report?

here is little doubt that the Board elections resulted in a mixed bag of developments. Here’s how I see it. First of all two of the three people elected, Messrs. Amen and Gladstone, were nominated by the Board’s Nominating Committee. Two of the three people elected were former Board Members, who not only were affected by term limits and had to leave the Board two years ago, but were both defeated running from the floor last year for the same positions they easily won this year-they were Messrs. Battaglia and Gladstone. The up and down Board career of the former AKC President Ken Marden, who had been fired by a Board many years ago and defeated and then re-elected by another Delegate Body of years ago, and who was in terms of actual years the longest serving Board Member, was defeated once again by the current Delegate Body. The so-called freshest and newest faces--one nominated by the Nominating

Committee a woman from the Northwest, Ms. Burgess, and a male running from the floor, a Mr. Smythe, who was turned down by two different AKC Presidents when he applied for the position of House Counsel for AKC, received the lowest vote support of the seven candidates. Sound confusing?? Well it is and was confusing and raises to my mind at least the following question. How can a Delegate Body elect two people who were forced off the Board one year and defeated the next year when they re-ran and then vote them back into office the next year? Perhaps one may argue it had to do with the caliber of the people running. Certainly on paper Mr. Amen was the heads and shoulders choice--how he performs is another matter but the others left many in a quandary so what the Delegates did and wisely so, I believe, was to fall back on the people they knew--not necessarily trusted but knew. That being the case, why have those damned term limits at all I have to ask. Next year should be fascinating as the jockeying for Board Chairman has already begun among at least three people--Messrs. Ashby and Gladstone and Dr. Garvin, CONTINUED ON PAGE 84

guard against anything that can happen to their animals while in vehicles. Consider the theft of a handler’s van from a motel parking lot during the AKC/Eukanuba weekend in Long Beach CA in December. After exercising and caring for the dogs at 11 PM and trusting the security guards on duty until six AM, handler Kristina Rickard took three of her seven charges into her motel room and left her own two Akitas and two clients Pembroke Corgis in the van. At six AM when she went out to care for the dogs, her van was gone! It had been stolen, perhaps right under the noses of the security guards, with four dogs on board! Thanks to widespread publicity on the part of local media and a city wide search that spread out even more, the dogs and van were eventually located. But imagine the stressful anxiety of those 48 hours they were unaccounted for. Imagine not knowing where your beloved charges are and trying to carry on. “I don’t know how I got through it,” Kristina said. “I couldn’t have done it without Dave.” Dave Peek is her significant other who worked side by side with police, the media and all the volunteers who pitched in to help with the search. Kristina’s father Tom Rickard made an immediate nine-hour drive to be there through the ordeal for his daughter. Kristina credits the immediate response of everybody from Facebook friends to the Bellflower Sherriff’s Department and local media for helping find the lost van and dogs. Within 45 minutes of making the 911 call, several news cameramen and media personnel were on site helping get the story out. Posters were distributed all over the Long Beach area. The van and two Akitas were recovered in Compton 28 hours after their disappearance. An unidentified “perp” had sold the Akitas to a lady whose sister gave her the heads up that these were the lost dogs. In time she was reimbursed her investment plus a reward. The van was missing a lot of valuable equipment. The police followed up on a prank false call claiming to have the lost Corgis to no avail. Imagine everyone’s shock when the Corgis turned up about one hundred miles away in Victorville and it was not clear exactly how that came to be. The person proved they were the right dogs by sending pictures via his telephone and 48 hours after the fact, the dogs were once more back with Kristina. The trauma resulted in Kristina not only getting alarm systems for her vehicles but hidden tracking devices as well. Evidently the police can track such designated vehicles to within a few feet of their actual location, a comforting thought to our dog fancy concerned with the safety and well-being of their animals. In June of 2010, Texans Sue Ellen Hooper and Richard Hooper were en route to the Swedish Vallhund National in Flagstaff AZ when a similar incident occurred. Due to the summer heat, all of their seven dogs were brought into the motel room when they stopped for the night in Wichita Falls TX. Early the next morning Richard exercised and loaded all the dogs in their van and turned it on to get the air conditioner running. (The van could not be locked if the engine was running). Then he returned to the room for a few moments to help Sue Ellen bring the luggage out and the van was gone! Thirty-one hours of frantic searching and anxiety later, the van was found parked by a country road and the engine was running. The Hoopers credit the support of local authorities and the media with the recovery, as the incident was front page news and well publicized on local television stations. Although the dogs were somewhat dehydrated, all were in good health and only one crate was soiled even though it did not appear any of them had been taken from their crates. This weekend the Faith City Kennel Club in Wichita Falls TX is honoring the grandfather-grandson team that spotted the van and immediately called the police. Apparently the van had only been there for a very short time as the pair was passing the location for the second time in about 30 minutes, and it was not there earlier. Speculation is that the “perp” got spooked by all the publicity and decided to abandon it. Later personal items of the Hoopers were recovered by police and the investigation is on-going. The Hoopers turned around and returned to their home following this harrowing incident. The message is that we are no longer living in innocent times. We cannot take the safety of our animals or of ourselves for granted. Increasing numbers of desperate people are now joining the ranks of seasoned crooks and criminals in dishonest endeavors. The Drivers Education teacher lectured about defensive driving where one is always on the alert for mistakes by others that could result in terrible accidents. It seems we have to have that same mentality in protecting our dogs. Let us all rededicate ourselves to the utmost vigilance in caring for our animals-be they in the van, at home, at dog shows or anywhere else where any possible danger might exist. Expecting the unexpected should become a way of life for us all-especially in these troubled times. The Boy Scout motto “Be Prepared” is a way of life we should embrace. 60 Dog News

AVMA Enhances Disaster Preparedness

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation has allocated $85,000 in 2011 to five state or regional disaster organizations. These organizations were chosen because they sought to enhance their disaster preparedness and response efforts. These matching grants are offered each year through the Foundation’s Animal Disaster Relief and Response Fund. The organizations who will benefit this year are The Kansas State Animal Response Team to enhance their efforts to build working county and regional teams throughout the state. The allocation of $20,000 this year will help the organization procure several large tents with walls and flooring to house animals, climatecontrol systems, generators, fencing and caging systems. The Louisiana State University Foundation will receive $20,000 towards disaster response training for graduate veterinarians, students, animal control officers, first responders, emergency managers and other animal care personnel. The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation is part of the Texas Emergency Management Plan. Statewide companion animal emergency response efforts are now the recognized responsibilities of the Foundation’s Texas State Animal Resource Team. Their $20,000 allotment will go to recruit, train and deploy two animal emergency re-entry teams along the Texas Gulf Coast. They will upgrade and deploy their disaster response units for actual emergencies. The Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Foundation was awarded $5,000 as part of a matching grant to work on long term goals. These include building a response trailer, working to support an Oklahoma task force’s search and rescue dogs, providing for the dogs’ medical care, training and deployment. The Colorado Veterinary Medical Foundation received $20,000 in matching funds to support recruitment and training of veterinarians in disaster preparedness on the Western Slope of the state. The goal is to recruit and train ten more veterinarians and fifteen veterinary technicians and to build Community Animal Response Teams throughout the state. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation is also accepting applications for disaster training session grants and student scholarships. Each year the Foundation sponsors state, regional or national training sessions aimed at preparing veterinarians to care for animals before, during and after a natural or man-made disaster. For applications or further information contact AVMF at www.avmf.org and click on “What We Fund” and “Disaster Relief.” (JAVMA, Feb 15, 2011)

Managing Canine Chin Acne

Canine chin acne, also known as muzzle foliculitis or furunculosis, is an inflammation of a hair follicle. It is often seen in teen-age dogs, and is often associated with the short bristly hairs that develop on the chin. Sometimes rubbing the chin, or exposure to wet or damp conditions caused by puppies chewing on toys will cause minor infection of the hair follicles. Antibiotics used topically on the affected area, or cleaning the area with medicated wipes often prevent the condition from worsening. In severe cases, oral antibiotics may be indicated. Some cases are caused by autoimmune disease, contact dermatitis, allergies or in rare cases, cancer of the skin. Skin scraping cultures may be necessary to determine if bacterial infection is present. (Veterinary Medicine, February 2011)

Ohio State Offers Veterinary Public Health Degree

The Ohio State University is accepting applications for its veterinary public health Master’s degree. The degree is being offered through a partnership between the college of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Public Health at OSU. The program is open to those with a science background, including veterinarians and others interested in public health. Students will received specialized instruction in the epidemiology of zoonotic diseases, plus training in food safety, biosecurity and environmental health. Classes will begin in the fall of 2011. Applications are being accepted through May 31. The web address is http://vet.osu.edu/vhpmph. (DVM Newsmagazine, February 2011)

Canine Health Foundation Benefits

allied veterinary organization of the AVMA House of Delegates. A number of AVMA members, however, are also AVAR members. As members of the AVMA, these veterinarians are entitled to all the privileges of membership—including opportunities to serve in leadership positions on various AVMA entities (e.g., Councils, Committees, Task Forces, House of Delegates, and Executive Board), to present topics for study and evaluation by the Association, and to introduce resolutions to the AVMA House of Delegates. If the AVAR no longer exists as a distinct organization and the HSVMA replaces the AVAR, HSVMA members who are also AVMA members will continue to receive their full AVMA membership privileges.” At the time of the switch in names from AVAR to HSVMA, Pacelle said “With a $120 million budget, HSUS promises to provide a financial cushion for marketing HSMVA, boosting AVAR’s $425,000 budget and dumping the group’s ‘animal rights’ designation, which officials admit burdens their quest to gain legitimacy within AVMA’s ranks. Incorporating AVAR sensitivities, HSVA mission is animal protection advocacy.” Pacelle added, “AVMA needs to get off its high horse. Their positions defending horse slaughter, for example, have the American public increasingly upset with them.” HSUS effectively shut down all horse slaughter houses in the U.S., putting thousands of people out of work. In case your reaction to “horse slaughter” is agreement with HSUS, consider these facts. Now that old, injured, or terminally ill horses can’t be processed in America, they are dumped on rural roads by owners who can no longer care for them, can’t afford to euthanize and dispose of them, and can’t sell them for slaughter. As opposed to quick death in U.S. slaughter facilities, horses are trucked under inhumane

conditions to Mexico where they are bled to death, after their throats are cut. American horse meat fed gourmets’ in France. It fed our dogs and zoo animals. Now it does not. Now it costs upwards of $1,500-$2,000 to dispose of a horse body as “toxic waste.” That has significantly raised the price of pet food, and in many cases, lowered quality. Now that AVAR is alive and well under its new name of HSVMA, its members are busily climbing the political structures of the AVMA and the CVMA and California’s governmental Veterinary Medical Board. Lately the most outrageous appointment to California’s VMB was that of Judie Mancuso as a public member. How did that happen? Mancuso, you may remember, is the founder and president of Social Compassion, the animal rights advocacy organization which has sponsored mandatory spay/neuter legislation in this state for the last few years. Social Compassion was reportedly co-founded by Jane Garrison, often described as a PETA activist or HSUS employee. In 2010, while her SB250 was being defeated (barely), Mancuso was appointed by John Perez, Speaker of the California Assembly, to the state’s Veterinary Medical Board. It’s not clear what public interest Mancuso serves on VMB, the state agency primarily responsible for licensing and regulating the practice of veterinary medicine in California. However there is a connection. The California Pet Lover’s License plate, sponsored by the California Veterinary Medical Board, provides a way for pet lovers to help reduce pet overpopulation. Proceeds from the sale of the plate provide funding for free or low-cost spay & neuter surgeries across California, and also help to raise awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering.

For a $98 fee, Californians can buy a spay and neuter license plate. 1,800 of them have been sold. That would amount to $180.000. The money generated by the sale of these plates is to be administered by the California Spay and Neuter License Plate Fund, Inc. Who is the president of this organization? You guessed it, it’s Mancuso. So let’s get this right, we have the Speaker of the Assembly appointing an Animal Rights extremist to a state agency, we have that state agency promoting a pet project of the Animal Rights extremist, we have the Animal Rights extremist in charge of the money raised by this project. Mancuso is said to have hired the high-priced lobbyist firm, Platinum Advisors in the final hours of the 2010 legislative session. (This firm also represents Allergan, Pfizer and Estee Lauder, companies that just might not see eye-to-eye with animal rights folks about animal testing.) Platinum isn’t cheap; so where is Mancuso’s money coming from? SCIL, SC, PETA, HSUS, or some other organization in the Animal Rights? (Some of the named organizations are tax-exempt, 501(c) (3) organizations and not supposed to be engaged in lobbying activities.) At least Social Compassion (SC) and Social Compassion In Legislation (SCIL) distinguish between SC which is tax exempt and pays for the spaying and neutering of pets, and SCIL which is not exempt and is “a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization focused on reducing pet overpopulation by legislation.” I wish the HSUS was as up front about the split between their charitable and legislative fund-raising. And the same goes for PETA. The HSVMA has a large student outreach program in order to recruit veterinary students for the animal rights movement. The HSVMA has student chapters in Colorado State University, University of Florida, University of Illinois, Oregon State University, Tufts Cummings SchoolofVeterinaryMedicine, Tuskegee University, Washington State University, and Western Health Sciences, University, CONTINUED ON PAGE 72

—with students at four more schools ( including the UC Davis vet school) working on starting a chapter. HSVMA offers seminars and guidelines for how to form new chapters. It also offers help for students that don’t want to dissect animals in vet school or to operate on animals that will be euthanized at the end of the surgery. When I helped rescue 19 racing Greyhounds from the UC Davis vet school, I asked the vet in charge why they wanted the Greyhounds when they could get all the dogs they needed from Sacramento County Animal Control. He said that the dogs that came from animal control came with an agreement that they had to be euthanized without bringing them out of the anesthesia for practice operations. I didn’t have any real difficulty with the idea of taking dogs that would be euthanized anyway, anesthetizing them, allowing a vet student to practice surgery on them, and then euthanizing them while they were still anesthetized. But some vet students do object and the HSVMA will help them negotiate with the school. The same students often don’t want to do dissections. Originally sixty Greyhounds were purchased for experimental use. It turned out that there wasn’t much of a demand for them. After 8 months the school was still housing 36 of them. At that point 16 were euthanized to be dissection subjects for the incoming vet class. That event disturbed an employee enough so that he passed the word of the dogs’ existence to me and I passed it along to Susan Netboy of Greyhound Friend’s for Life. She started the legal proceedings that eventually freed the remaining dogs. These dogs’ ear tattoos had been tattooed over to make them illegible. The judge who heard the case said that if you buy a VCR in a parking lot with its ID number scratched off, you should assume that it is not the property of the seller; and he awarded all the dogs with illegible tattoos to rescue. We were too late to save the dissection dogs. It is not an accident that most AR

folks are young, female, vegetarians while most current vet students are also young and female. It is a demographic of caring people who are easily misled by the AR’s propaganda. So we can expect to see increasing numbers of veterinarians with AR leanings. HSVMA says that it was formed as a home for veterinary professionals who want to engage in direct care programs for animals in need and educate the public and others in the profession about animal welfare issues. The AR folks are trying to hijack the term “Animal Welfare.” Most of us understand animal welfare to apply to the care of animals in need, shelter, mainly feral, and un-owned animals. We use the term to distinguish between animal welfare organizations that help animals hands on, and animal rights organizations whose primary interests are legislation and “education” which to them means brainwashing the public to believe in their AR agenda. But the AR’s have caught on that Animal Rights is often has detrimental meaning for the public. So they changed the name of AVAR to HSVMA and are now trying to co-opt “animal welfare” for their own use. Are we going to need to come up with a new term for actual hands-on animal rescue and care? The HSVMA managed to get the AVMA to now include “welfare” in the veterinarian’s professional oath. The HSVMA web site will lead you to a 2011 article by By Zarah Hedge, DVM, a first year shelter vet. She titled it “Embracing Change in the Veterinary Profession” and she tells what changes she hopes from future vets. “The veterinary profession as a whole is not known for being outspoken. Often, when questions of animal welfare are posed, many veterinarians prefer to remain impartial or silent. Some may be concerned about causing conflicts

with clients and others may be afraid of losing business. The phrase “no comment” is frequently offered when veterinarians are asked about animal welfare issues, particularly when the topic is controversial. However, as public views regarding animals change, our profession must also change. From a medical perspective, we’ve gone through some remarkable changes over the years—veterinarians now provide state-of-the-art care for our patients, equivalent to that provided in human medicine. However, when it comes to the welfare of animals, we seem to be lagging behind. As animal caretakers, it makes perfect sense that we play an active role not only in the health, but in the overall well-being of our patients. Fortunately, over the past decade, our profession seems to be taking steps in the right direction by becoming more proactive in the animal welfare movement.”… Hey, Zarah, my public views regarding animals haven’t changed, and I guarantee that if my vets become more active in the animal rights ‘welfare’ movement then my veterinarians will have conflicts at least with this client and will be losing business. I wonder how they would like being picketed to let their other clients know about their AR views. If I can picket the HSUS, I certainly could picket an AR vet and when one vet came out to support Mandatory Spay and Neuter legislation at Sacramento County, I was tempted to picket his office. We were surprised that any vet would come to the Board of Supervisor’s meeting to support MSN. But a small fraction of vets are AR supporters. We need to make it clear to our vets that the animal rights folks are opposed to our and our vets’ best interests, and that we don’t care to patronize vets with AR leanings.

Signs of the Times CONTINUED FROM PAGE 44

ises. It would also be harmful to anyone who sells dogs over the Internet, and that includes a lot of show breeders. The bill also defines a breeding bitch as a female dog that is four months old. The bill includes numbers which are unnecessary and which have nothing to do with how well dogs are cared for. And the bill sets exercise requirements which are unreasonable and not appropriate in all cases. Although HSUS claims the bill would not affect small breeders, it most definitely would be harmful to the small breeder, including show breeders. The bill has been introduced early this year, which may suggest that ARs intend to make a strong push with it. Finally comes the release of the AKC Annual Report with the overall registration numbers for 2010. The report is easily found on AKC’s web site: <http://images.akc.org/pdf/2010_annual_report.pdf> It’s disturbing to see that AKC’s registrations fell another 13.2 percent last year. In 2010, 563,611 dogs were registered, and 273,240 litters. That is approximately half the number of dogs that were registered in 2000, just 10 years ago. Most of the time I go along about my busi-

prove things, but I don’t know if it will be enough. Right now AKC is getting smaller every year, in terms of dogs registered. I think that means to the public and to legislators AKC becomes less and less important. Why should a legislator care what AKC thinks or wants when it’s representing fewer and fewer people? Right now I don’t know what the answer is, but I have to ask myself if there is some other way for the AKC to measure the number of constituents it serves. The AKC has always focused on the number of purebred dogs and litters registered. That is the core mission and always should be. But the AKC is much more diversified in 2011 than it was in 1884, or even in 1984 or 1994. How many purebred rescue groups work through AKC parent clubs? How many PAL dogs does AKC serve? How many mixed breed dogs are taking part in AKC’s Canine Partners program and having fun at AKC events? How many people with a shelter dog are getting their Canine Good Citizen title? Maybe AKC should start talking more about the people they serve, as well as the

ness. I have my dogs. I do things with them. I go to shows when I can. I attend meetings. I work on dog legislation. I have a litter now and then. I think I know what I’m doing, where I’m going. I’ve got a plan. Then once in a while something happens and I get that scared feeling. My legs start shaking and my knees get weak. I start feeling like the world could really collapse. That’s how these numbers make me feel. Maybe AKC really is becoming a boutique registry. Commercial breeders don’t want us and they’re never coming back. We’re just a registry for a few snobby show breeders and not much else. Everyone else is going to get a shelter dog or they don’t care if they have a purebred dog anyway. Even when somebody like the Facebook guy BUYS a rare breed dog from a breeder, he claims he adopted the dog. So, these are the signs of the times that I’ve been considering. I have to say that some of these things shake me up when I think about them. I think that AKC is working hard to im-

76 Dog News

dogs. We know how many purebred dogs it registers each year. That number has been shrinking. But we might discover that the actual number of people becoming involved in AKC events each year is growing, whether they have a purebred dog from a breeder, a rescue dog, or a shelter dog. It would be interesting to find out how many human constituents the AKC serves. The AKC must touch the lives of millions of people each year with its events and programs. How many people attend dog shows, agility and obedience events, hunting trials, and other AKC events like Meet The Breeds and Responsible Dog Ownership Day? I think the AKC needs to start telling legislators AND the public about how many people are affected by AKC events each year. Maybe then people would take another look at AKC today. The AKC is about dogs, but it touches the lives of an awful lot of people, too. My dog votes, but politicians want to know how many people you can bring to the polls.

However, if my dog’s successes in the various canine sports give me an opportunity to educate future owners about health issues in the breed and how to find a reputable breeder, that is an added bonus.” “Health is our number one issue,” said Beyer. “Our dogs die too young. We’ve done a great job working on orthopedic issues but cancer is still far too prevalent. THE ELECTIONS, CRUFTS...

whilst do not forget three NEW people must be elected to the Board since Davies, Goodman and Menaker are all forced off due to, you guessed it--term limits. Of course in the background are three former Board Members --oops, five former Board Members, all women--Mesdames Daniels (another dismissed former AKC president), Haines, Laurens, Schaefer and Strand plus Ken Marden, who, history has proven, never can be counted out. Additionally there was alleged to be some fascinating backroom maneuvering going on with some pretty powerful Delegate Committee Chairperson supporting a candidate and then having it backfire after the elections--I’ve heard this from several people but am waiting for definite confirmation for names to be named. As for Crufts it cannot be denied its greatness nor its size. Fully 13 full pages of the dfsCrufts catalogue is devoted to show map information as a means to help one find one’s way at the Show “quickly and easily”! The lead page is reprinted herein just to give you an idea as to how massive an operation is this dog show event. A compass would certainly serve as a help to the first time attendee! Additionally you have to keep in mind this is a four-day show with different groups and breeds of dogs shown each day. Going just on your “day” only considerably lessens the impact which this event has as a truly unique dog show event. The first or twotime goer usually ends up questioning the value of the event as they do not give themselves the opportunity to develop the impact of the total operation. This is now over my 20th Crufts and with each year I grow more in awe of what it represents and the amount of coordinated work it takes for The Kennel Club to present it--which it does basically flawlessly.

A

perfectly lovely 9 or 10 year-old FlatCoat won the enchilada going Best. This is the 23rd Gundog since 1930 to have been awarded the top award here and the first back-to-back Gundogs to win as last year a Vizsla won since 1980 and 81. The figures about Gundogs are a bit deceiving though since in the early ‘30’s many of the victors were repeat winners--nonetheless it does indicate the importance that gundogs play in British society and of course this dog is the first Flat-Coat to do so. In the Group itself I thought the Chesapeake Bay Retriever and the Irish Water Spaniel to have been outstanding as well with the IWS going Group 2 to the Flat Coat from Scotland. Overall though I was a bit disappointed in the Gundog group representatives but for the Bracco, which absolutely was a stand-out as was the Curly Coat. Of course the elegant Paolo Dondina was the Best in Show judge just as he was at Westminster. He had no repeat Group breed winners although in terriers of course in America he had a Smooth and in the UK a Wire as their group representatives. It would have been interesting to have Mr. Dondina compare the two line-ups publicly--Westminster versus Crufts, but I doubt unless one is a close family member or friend that would be done. Paolo has developed into one of the premier judges in the world certainly at the major shows and for the major awards. A picture of him as a younger man with his fox terrier being awarded Best at Crufts in the ‘70’s is in this story. His Reserve Best was a young PGBV bitch--17 months, which was just adorable and one that you would have happily taken home with you. Of correct size and movement perhaps not quite in the coat she will have in another year or two but to take home for sure. I missed the entire Hound Group so cannot comment on that but did watch several Greyhound

classes, which were judged by Nena Flyckt-Pederson, wife of you know who. She did a fine job judging the breed and why shouldn’t she have--she knows the breed so well. But it was nice to see a friend perform properly as a judge, which is not the easiest feat to always accomplish. A top winning Boxer won the working group, which was very European in nature I thought. Again a Group I was somewhat disappointed in although the Rottie, which had won the Group last year and placed fourth this year, was a keeper, as were the Leonberger and the Black RussianTerrier. Pastoral was awarded to a fine GSD--no longer Alsatians although the TV screen in the main arena kept that title, with to my mind, a Smooth Collie and of all things a BSD (Laekenois) not far behind. You know with all the problemsTKC and the various GSD clubs have been having about breed exaggerations it was good to see a nice dog such as the one which won represent the breed. I understand various social networks were up in arms over this win but the hell with them--this was a healthy fine dog fit for function and you did not need a veterinarian to tell you that either. As for the other two groups the Toy and Utility (our nonsporting) these were the groups that I found to be overall just teeming with quality. Unlike our own Non-Sporting Group at Westminster, which I found extremely lacking, this one had quality everywhere. The eventual winner was not my choice by a long shot-a black standard poodle- but the Lhasa which was second although different from our Lhasa, which I also loved, would have made a real run for it in BIS, I thought anyways. I marked 12 of the 24 dogs in that group for short listing that’s how strong a group I thought it to be without MY having shortlisted the Standard at all! But that’s me. As for Toys the Bichon Frise won that group, which of course is a tough adjustment for an American eye to have the Bichon in the Toy Group. It was and is a fine Bichon and in the Utility Group an easy shortlister and possible winner but I cannot get used to them in the Utility group no matter how much I may like the exhibit. Of the 23 toys in competition I shortlisted 12 here including the Bichon so again it was another powerful group of toy exhibits. As for individual breed watching, unless you sit and watch an entire breed, which means of course you get to see no other breeds, it’s hard to evaluate a breed individually. Fortunately the terrier area is somewhat compact in Hall 5 so you can go back and forth to watch major versus minor classes but I find it hard to do this on other days. In conclusion I can only say I love Crufts and so long as my feet and body hold out look forward to attending it for years to come.

The

GOSSIP Column C

RUFTS DOG SHOW is truly unlike any other dog show in the world. Hard to image, 22,000 dogs being judged in four days and the show run by the staff of Kennel Club (there is no professional show superintendent) headed by the very able VANESSA MCALPINE. VANESSA has led the show team for more years than she cares to remember, but it would be unimaginable to have anyone else do the job that she does. The quantity of dogs does not translate to quality of dogs, but at the end of four days the final lineup had some worthy contenders. Manning the American Kennel Club stand were RON MENAKER, SUSAN & DENNIS SPRUNG, BARBARA OHMANN, GINA DINARDO, and MICHAEL CANALIZO. Seen around the rings were BARBARA LOUNSBURY, GEORGE WRIGHT, LESLEY & DAVID HILTZ, NANCY MARTIN, PAM BEALE, BETH SWEIGART, ANDREW GREEN, PETER GREEN (who was judging the Young Kennel Club members classes all four days), JOAN URBAN & CLAUDIA ORLANDI (who were on their way home from a judging assignment in Spain), JOE VAUDO, LIZ TOBIN (still rehabbing from shoulder surgery), CLINT LIVINGSTON, BILL MCFADDEN, GABRIEL RANGEL, R.C. CARUSI, NENA & GEIR FLYCKT-PEDERSEN (NENA judged Greyhounds), raffle winner from the AKC Canine Health Foundation dinner KAREN MAYS accompanied

In England, a new award will honor the Farm Dog of the Year. In other top performances by dogs… JOHN BAKER was the first Eskimo to win the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race from Anchorage to Nome covering the 1,150-mile race in 8 days, 19 hours and 46 minutes. Sad news…well known Doberman Pinscher fancier MIKE PENNY from Texas passed away as a result of his own hand. Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends, who are stunned by his actions. JERRY BERKOWITZ is celebrating his birthday with a cruise to Honduras and Belize, DIANA WILSON hitting the big 40, SUSAN KIPP, CEIL RUGGLES, GEORGIE COVEY, SONDRA KATZ, PLUIS DAVERN, SHIRLEY BOXER, DIANE STEELE, MARY BEECHER, TIFFANY SAXON, NICK LOMBARDI, GABRIEL RANGEL, JACKIE HARRINGTON, NICOLE FISHER, REGINA KEITER and DOG NEWS’ own SHAUN COEN & CHRIS KING.
