It seems there just can’t be a Crufts without some sort of controversy! Last year it was the alleged poisoning of an Irish Setter, which of course proved to be something that never did occur at the NEC with which to begin. This despite the scurrilous article appearing in a recent issue of Vanity Fair, which seems to have lost much of its credibility with that reportage among other stories included in that particular issue. Crufts this year had over 160,000 spectators, which must have set an attendance record, and swelled the already bulging coffers of TKC, which of course presents the show under the watchful eyes of Gerard King and Vanessa McAlpine. Unfortunately between an obviously lame GSD exhibit and a Judge adjudicating and awarding the Group to a dog co-owned and bred by his sister social media had a field day condemning the situation. The GSD situation was totally inexplicable but dogs do pull up lame or get injured and presumably this is what happened here as it has been reported to these pages that the exhibit in question has a history of showing perfectly acceptably. If that is the case the dog should just have been pulled from Group competition so that the Jemima Harrisons of the world would not get their “jollies off” condemning the alleged crippled GSD breed. Just look at our own GSD exhibit, the Number One dog all-breed in the USA for 2015, the great Rumor bitch whose movement is undeniably A ONE superior!!!!! Stick that in your hat Jemima!!! As for the “sister act” with the Gordon Setter bad judgment for sure. The Brits rightly or wrongly have no Rules or Regulations covering these types of incidents. Don’t forget in the UK people who live in the same household may have one person judge and another person exhibit at the same day at the same show! The Kennel Club commented that no regulations were broken by either the judge or the owners of the dog. In its official statement TKC said the following: “It is important to clarify that no rules were broken here. Any dog that is chosen as a winner is done so because of the judge’s honest opinion on the day and is judged with integrity”. Well that may be the case but it sure did look bad to the general public. Another case of poor judgment on the part of someone who should have just taken a lap of honor instead. The perception was a bad one with the reality of the case being that the dog is a magnificent representative of its breed and quite frankly the judge did what she/ he is supposed to do-- judge the exhibits as presented to them. On the other hand there were no tail incidents this year as there was last year and a perfectly grand 10 Dog News

looking West Highland White Terrier took the BIS ribbon to the delight of most. Crufts is one of the most outstanding dog show events in the world and continues to intrigue and broadcast the advantages of purebred dog ownership and the breeding of the purebred dog despite the glitches which seem to disrupt this great event year after year.

MORE ON AKC’s ELECTION PRACTICES

Well the election aftermaths continue as some wonder at the manipulations of some on Staff and the Board attempts to influence Delegate votes. Of course in April the Board will go through its ANNUAL rite of voting the President, the Secretary and the CFO in or out of office. Were there to be a COO he/she would also be voted upon as well. How totally out of date is this annual ritual, which the Delegates and the Board refuse to change. When will the By-Laws and Constitution of AKC be updated to meet modern day needs? Some say it would take a total act of revolt on the part of the Board to accomplish a modernizing of AKC’s Constitution. While these pages are certainly not necessarily advocating procedure the Board could follow if it so chose of disbanding the Delegate Body in the altogether and going to Court to rewrite the Constitution. There are some in the sport who do advocate this kind of move. This is to the extreme insofar as these pages are concerned but don’t forget many decades ago that was just what Board Chairman August Belmont did and that’s how the Delegate Body came to be created as a compromise move among warring factions of Board Members. Something has to give in to this refusal to redirect and rewrite the present Constitution lest AKC become totally anachronistic in its operations and follow the path of the dinosaur. One supposes that the formation of the LLC is an attempt to change things but the problem with going in that direction is selecting the proper projects that are in line with AKC’s mission statement and the branding of AKC’s image.

HELPING MAJOR CITY DOG SHOWS

What obligation if any does AKC have towards helping dog shows afford and/or find sites in major cities such as Detroit, Beverly Hills, Chicago, Boston, Brooklyn, Westchester and the like. The demise of dog shows in these major cities and or communities where there are literally thousand of homes just aching to own a purebred dog seems to be overlooked or ignored by those looking to expand the role of people wanting to buy the purebred dog. Indeed just look at the New England area where show after show is concentrated in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Sure its convenient

for certain exhibitors but the fact is that with over 30 if not close to 40 shows being held in Springfield how is the message to the general dog show owning community getting out to own and or purchase a purebred dog? Why clubs in Albany, New York and Queens, NYC are permitted to ignore their own constituents and hold shows in Springfield, Massachusetts. Does it really help the people of Boston to learn about the advantages of purebred dog ownership by holding its shows there as well? If AKC can sign a major long-term lease (no matter how favorable the terms may or may not be) in NYC for a doggy day care center why can’t it help out the struggling clubs within major cities to afford and present their home show in their designated geographic area? This is a major long-term project that these pages believe should be high on the list for the Board to discuss.

THE RKF

That there are financial problems within the structure of the Russian Kennel Federation seems to be an accepted fact. That monies were taken, some of which may or may not have been returned, casts yet another pall over the World Show to be hosted by RKF in Moscow this year. Certainly the civil rights aspect of the gay and lesbian communities within the dog world remain as much of a problem as ever before since there has been no change by the Putin administration in that area. On March 15 the President of RKF these pages are told resigned. The Board met and asked Andrey Klishas to start the reform which will be finalized on the 13th of April. The Board is to then vote on his recommendation for a new President. These pages know Mr. Klishas to be a very honorable type individual and while he himself can not run for President due to his existing job responsibilities one can be assured he will certainly act in the best interests of the World Show and the RKF.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

It would appear that as reported to these pages “no one came even close” to winning the $1 million dollar bracket prize from Purina insofar as naming the 7 group and BIS winners at Westminster. With the NCAA bracket frenzy starting today (this piece being written on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17) it’s beginning to look as though the person who said it would be easier to predict the winner of the Basketball Tournament than to pick the 7 group and the BIS winners at Westminster was absolutely right! So much for questioning the results of dog show winners--anything goes in that respect to which any seasoned dog show goers can attest.

If At First You Don’t Succeed?

ell, the answer should be easy: Try again! Most of the people surrounding me in the years when I first got infected by this bug called dog showing, had one thing in common. Learning by trying and sadly, often failing. But we still kept going, despite often harsh criticism from judges and fellow competitors. Many a return from dog shows was filled more by tears than by joy! And watching recent shows like Westminster and Crufts, having the pleasure of looking at so many beautiful animals, I wish I knew the real story behind many of the top dogs. One hugely important factor during these formative years, which in a way as dog breeders never end, is to have wise and knowledgeable people to consult for advice as well as at times, comfort and consolation. I would love to know more about how each individual were caught up in this world of breeding and showing, if it was by chance or by conscientious, well informed resolutions which directly or indirectly led to their success? And of course if they in any way have important mentors, like an Annie Clarke or a Hans Lehtinen influencing and helping along the way. I am sure over here, just as in the UK and Scandinavia there were and are so many unsung heroes who have contributed and helped others without ever being recognized and properly appreciated. Those of us who have spent the majority of our lifetime involved in the game all know that being a successful breeder is nothing you can buy for money alone. We have witnessed this in many parts of the world, over and over again. Some of the people in this game for whom I have the most admiration are those who with very limited resources and without the help of “pimps” achieve the optimal success! I have a sneaking suspicion that some of these

people with more money could have achieved so much more, but on the other hand, I am not so sure. I think the fact that they had to think “smart” and not waste any time or money, made them smarter and made them as successful as they were or are!! How many times have we seen a successful dog breeder who has been going for years at a high level, suddenly getting a wealthy sponsor and then just fading into the background…. Evidently failing under pressure and losing focus! I don’t know how many of you were able to follow breed judging or even group judging at this year’s Crufts, but for me who spent nearly 25 years in the UK it seems like shocking that there still are such huge differences in standards when it comes to handling and presentation. I must also add that for an old fashioned jerk like myself, it is hard to accept a lot of the shortcuts creeping into presentation of so many breeds. Aspects in my opinion of huge importance for determination of breed type. Then many of you would describe what is happening as progress- and seriously- if you had told me 40 years ago that German judges at any stage would accept leg hair on the Schnauzer breeds- or even some shades of color accepted today, I would simply have laughed. I did in my younger days show, with some success, a number of breeds, which included all three Schnauzer breeds, I subscribed to Terrier Type & Schnauzer Shorts and looked forward to each issue with the greatest of anticipation- and this publication surely had a huge impact on many aspects of my direction in life. At least the part that involved dogs, but what a fabulous job Dan Kiedrowski did in those days- and all those wonderful Blythewood Schnauzers advertised at stud all had leg hair!!! Isn’t it just wonderful to follow “Wonderwoman” aka Joan Huber still with the same enthusiasm, still successfully showing her dogs in great coat and condition. Reminds me so much of my friends George Ward, Ric Chashoudian and Ernest Sharpe, who

Brace f l e s r u Yo Student Judges in Scandinavia

or many years the Scandinavian countries have had in place a well thought-out and effective education programme for their judges, the results of which speak for themselves. Whilst the Kennel Club in the UK has in recent years dramatically improved its judges’ education, largely through the Judges’ Development Programme which still may have its critics as it is only available to judges who are already approved for a group, it has never embraced the principle of student judges, yet in my opinion this is one of the strengths of the Scandinavian learning curve. Before applying to be a student judge, enthusiasts will have already completed the basic stages of the formal education programme. Yet some judges do not welcome the prospect of a student judge; some say it interrupts their concentration whilst others honestly admit that it is just an inconvenience. Personally I take a slightly different viewpoint. Rather than interrupting the concentration I actually feel it makes a judge concentrate and focus more, as you are constantly aware of the need to explain all the nuances of breed type to the student and it is obviously paramount to only make decisions which can be easily and logically explained to the student. I will never accept a student judge unless I know I have plenty of time to do the job properly. I like around fifteen minutes before we start judging the breed to discuss it in detail with the student, find out how much they understand its essence, and ascertain what they consider are the “must haves” as regards points that contribute to breed type, and what failings may be forgiven in context. I also take the opportunity to discuss what Mrs Clark would have described as the present day “drags” of the breed. I recently had a student for Newfoundlands in Norway and, as an example, I pointed out that in my opinion these “drags” include untypical heads caused by narrow skulls, large loose eyes, too much drop of lip and too much stop (often exaggerated by the annoying fashion of back-combing the hair on the skull and pushing it forward to create a hideous Mohican/cockatoo kind of appearance). Furthermore many Newfoundlands today are slab-sided with over-angulated rears and often incorrect open coats. All of these points detract from typical and, as an aside, when discussing Newfoundlands with students I always mention being told in my formative years how similar the classic Newfoundland head is to a bear. Once we have discussed the breed in detail, we continue with the judging. Personally I always ask the student to join me in the centre of the ring when the class assembles. I suggest they look down the line and see if anything in particular takes their eye. We then send the dogs around the ring twice and I ask if any dogs have surprised – or disappointed – when gaiting. We then commence the hands on and the Scandinavian exhibitors are extremely tolerant and understanding when their dog is used to illustrate either an outstanding virtue or a very obvious fault that can be pointed out to the student. For example, when judging these Newfoundlands it was useful to be able to have a 18 Dog News

few dogs that had perfect scissor bites apart from the fact that they had two slightly dropped central lower incisors. This to me does not make “a bad mouth” as some judges see it, but untidy dentition. After I have completed my hands-on, the student can handle the dog whilst I dictate my written critique to the ring secretary. We then watch the dog move together and the student writes down his quality grading on the requisite form whilst I give my grading to the secretary. This is done with no conferring as at the end of the breed judging I will compare the student’s gradings with my own, write a brief assessment and make the appropriate recommendation. At the show in question the student judge for Newfoundlands passed with flying colours and we were so fortunate that in the very first class appeared the dog who was to eventually take the breed. Even at 13 months he was such an excellent example of correct type to use as a benchmark and was for me an easy winner over the more flash-and-dash Champions who “flew” around the ring that I suspect are used to winning on a regular basis. His photograph appears with this article. It often astounds me when talking to judges who come from countries where there is no rigorous training how lacking their knowledge can be when it comes to essential breed points, and I’m not talking about exotic rare breeds. Only recently I had a discussion with a charming lady who announced that she didn’t like the Lhasa Apso in the group because its head wasn’t big enough. The Lhasa in question had an exquisite headpiece and had won well under me in the past, so this led into an in-depth conversation about Lhasa head type for which my friend was duly grateful. At another recent show I had judged Cavalier King Charles Spaniels on the first day and was surprised to find several dogs in the Champion class that were essentially black with white and tan points (they were supposed to be tricolour) and terrier tail carriages. They did not of course receive an Excellent grading from me, no matter how good they were in other areas, yet the following day I was disappointed to see one of these dogs appearing in the group. I casually mentioned to the gentleman who had judged Cavaliers that day that he was obviously more forgiving of markings than I was in the breed and he clearly had no idea what I was talking about. I did however notice him later discretely pulling up the Breed Standard for the Cavalier on his iPad and I imagine a lesson had been learnt. In another groupside conversation I was a little taken aback when a lady judge I have known for years admitted to be being surprised when she had recently been told that Afghan Hounds should have big feet … I can only wonder what kind of feet she had been rewarding when she had judged the breed previously! As we see more and more judges progressing relatively quickly, it is obvious that basic breed education is not always what it should be. Before anyone embarks on judging a breed (the most important assignment in the show as it is in the breed ring that the most damage can be done; the group and BIS rings are of far less significance when it comes to THE BREED), they MUST have a thorough understanding of Breed Type which is dictated by size, proportion, construction, head, expression, coat, gait and character. This involves detailed study as so much is all about subtlety and nuance. In so many breeds something as apparently trivial (to some people) as eye shape and placement can be vital in creating the correct and typical expression. But beyond studying Breed Standards, it is also important to read as much as possible and talk to as many of the older breeders as are available about the original purpose and function of the breed. Only then will a judge be able to appreciate why certain aspects of the Breed Standard are required to be as described. As judges we all love to see beautifully presented and schooled dogs that have that indefinable charisma that will always draw the eye, however if they do not possess the fundamentals of Breed Type they are unlikely to ever contribute anything to their breed, and sometimes we need to remind ourselves of the reason why dog shows first began. A rigorous education programme for judges is one of the best ways to ensure that our breeds maintain integrity of breed type and do not merely become another fashion victim.

When I first read this last night in the most recent issue of Dog News I had to re-read it twice and then I read Sari’s column as well. In my own humble opinion, coming from the pet care business, the mere idea of AKC “running” a doggie day care center is preposterous. So technically it will become the Dunkin’ Donuts of pet care? Open a franchise! Pay us a percentage and call it the AKC K-9 center... If AKC can afford to hire the personnel to come up with these ideas for “profit making” then maybe the said personnel, and the idea makers, need to resign and go into the pet care business and leave the care of breeding and showing dogs in all of our genres of the sport to the truly dedicated and talented people that exist within AKC.

That AKC would even consider entering the dog care business indicates to me that it has surrounded itself with people who have very little understanding of the dog world generally and the hazards of running this type of business specifically. It amazes me that AKC would announce these intentions of going into the dog training, walking and grooming business as though this is a natural direction for an organization devoted to over a century of dog registration should take. Indeed in my opinion if AKC has that much money to spend on a “flyer” situation they would be better off spending these funds on promoting the purebred dog as a means to increase registration. I consider this to be a ridiculous and inappropriate business for AKC to enter.

here is an old proverb that says, “Handsome is as handsome does.” This suggests that how you act or perform is more important than how you look. This wisdom, sadly, has not achieved total acceptance in the world of sporting dogs where with many breeds, looks have trumped the dog’s ability to perform the breed’s historical job. With several breeds, dogs from “show” breeding are very pretty animals but leave a lot to be desired as hunting dogs while those dogs from “field” breeding bear little resemblance to anything outlined in the breed’s standard. But, even among breeds where there is a very significant split between “show” and “field” lines, there are some dedicated people who simply refuse to concede that you can’t have a dog that’s successful in both the show ring and the field along with also being pretty darned good in a whole bunch of other dog sports. No sporting breed has more of these dedicated people than the Golden Retriever breed. While there may be some who would consider these folks to merely be stubborn fools, fortunately for the future of the breed, they just ignore the catcalling and naysaying from either fringe and continue to persevere in their quest to ensure that Golden Retrievers not only are pretty and can do their historical job as hunting dogs but also can excel in just about any activity their owners want to try. “The second sentence of the breed standard says ‘Primarily a hunting dog, the Golden Retriever should be shown in hard working condition.’ A properly bred and trained Golden is a reliable gun dog and excellent upland game hunter. These characteristics allow a Golden to excel in other areas as well. This dog would freeze up wondering what on earth bad was going to happen so I had to learn to stay calm and keep my commands and signaling movements steady for both of us. Field training and hunt tests were the most difficult for me to master. I knew absolutely nothing and had no experience. I grew up in the city and played golf. I was very intimidated by this in the beginning but it was obvious from the start that my dogs loved it so I had to become someone who shoots and hunts both upland game and waterfowl. But it wasn’t easy at first. I was frequently told that my show line dogs could not do the work and that I was too soft to compete at the senior level in hunt tests. Opposition in New Jersey, Support in New York

ew Jersey consumers were dealt another blow when an amended Senate Bill 63 was approved by the Senate Economic Growth Committee by a 3-2 vote and was assigned to the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. Although the amended bill does not require shelters and rescues to supply pet shops with animals, it continues to limit pet shops to selling dogs sourced only from animal shelters and rescues. The amended version repeals New Jersey’s Pet Purchase Protection Act, removing consumer protections for New Jersey dog purchasers and limiting their choice. It also requires sales of all dogs to be face-to-face, and provides a new exception for transfers of dogs between breeders that are done exclusively for the preservation of the bloodline of the dog, provided that a breeder does not make more than five such transfers each year. It also requires that records of such exempted sales be submitted to the Department of Health prior to a sale. There is so much about the bill that is being misunderstood and misinterpreted by the public, though that may very well be the intention of those behind it. There has been a concerted effort to prevent pet shops from selling puppies that come from regulated breeders of any size and evidence suggests that this momentum is growing as part of the multi-pronged effort to spread the “adopt don’t buy” campaign, which is propagated under the guise that all dogs that come from breeders are the product of puppy mills. This, of course, is not the case, but that message is resonating with John Q. Public and all concerned dog owners must rally to change that conversation and enlighten lawmakers and the general public. The Courier-Post newspaper in New Jersey reports that there have been “hundreds” of these “anti puppy mill” laws passed locally throughout the nation in the past year. What these “anti puppy mill” laws actually do is take away a community’s ability to obtain a pet from a shop that was provided by a regulated breeder and instead limits their choice to only having access to pets that come from an unregulated shelter business that provides dogs of unknown origin, temperament and health. Reputable purebred breeders guarantee their dogs’ health and provide pets with predictable traits, size, and temperament so an educated consumer can make a practical, informed decision on whether or not that pet fits their lifestyle, ensuring that the dog has a forever home in supportive surroundings. Shelter dogs are wildcards and are often returned to the system or end up euthanized. The American Kennel Club has been fighting legislation of this nature wherever it has arisen, including in New Jersey, where the battle continues and has taken an interesting turn. New Jersey’s Courier-Post published a letter from a reader under the heading “Bill would protect pets and

consumers,” stating that the AKC supported the bill! Nothing could be further than the truth though the HSUS and other like-minded organizations probably wouldn’t point that out to anyone. Sheila Goffe, Director of the AKC’s Government Relations Department, had to pen a letter to The Courier-Post pointing out “that the AKC believes that by repealing consumer protections and limiting pet ownership options, the state Senate bill is bad for pets, bad for pet owners and bad for New Jersey.” Goffe also made other salient points in her rebuttal. She acknowledged that “finding a local breeder isn’t always possible for everyone, so local, regulated pet shops provide a safe and legitimate option for new pet owners who want a specific breed of pet with predictable type, temperament, care requirements and health checks; that has been bred by a licensed and regulated professional; and is subject to New Jersey’s consumer protection laws.” That lays it out succinctly and the AKC must get this message out to the public and to New Jersey’s Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee before it takes up a vote on the bill. (Hopefully, the new pet care facility the AKC has leased on the far west side of Manhattan will be plastered with similar messages in a proactive rather than a reactive manner.)

ome positive notes here in New York this week, as regulations were laid out for the new law passed in 2015 that will allow dogs that are licensed and vaccinated against rabies in outside dining areas. The rules go into effect in 30 days and restaurants will not be required to ask patrons for paperwork. Also this week, a resolution was approved this past Monday in the New York Senate to honor the dog’s valuable service and protection in the military by establishing a “K9 Veterans Appreciation Day.” All in favor should call on Governor Cuomo to declare March 13 as “K9 Veterans Appreciation Day”. Sponsored by Senator Kathleen Marchione of Saratoga

County, the resolution recognizes the many ways in which “military working dogs, past and present…have served our nation.” March 13, 1942 marks the founding of the United States K9 Corps and some 13 states have established the date as K-9 Veterans Day: California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, with efforts underway in Wisconsin and other states. (There is also a national effort targeting the President of the US to establish March 13 as K9 Veterans’ Day) . The NY resolution cites numerous examples of ways in which military dogs have served and acknowledges the AKC’s role in supporting these efforts as early as 1942, when it established the vital Dogs for Defense organization that trained dogs for coastal sentry duty for the United States Army. These dogs often made – and continue to make - the ultimate sacrifice by laying down their lives for their partners so the least we can do is set aside an official day to recognize their efforts. It behooves all dog lovers to contact Senator Kathleen Marchione to thank her for sponsoring this legislation (marchione@nyseante.gov) and to contact Governor Cuomo to express support of Senate Resolution J 4181 to declare March 13 as K9 Veterans Appreciation Day. Any recognition of the canine’s contributions to our society benefits all dogs and the rights of their breeders and owners. So, while we’re at it, how about mentioning that without purebred dogs and their knowledgeable, responsible breeders, and the registry that supports them and funds canine research, there wouldn’t be war dogs and police K9s and search and rescue dogs and bomb, drug and cancer detection dogs, and service dogs. The general public needs to rethink the “adopt don’t buy” attitude and it needs to be educated on its cause and effects. Instead of legislating that only shelter dogs be available to consumers, take some time to reflect on contributions of the canine – and the military and police K9 – in our society over thousands of years. Many educated, devoted people put a lot of hard work, time and money into the science of breeding dogs. Take a look at the dogs that serve our military, airports, hospitals, schools, police, and help our disabled, our blind, and our children. There are an awful lot of purebred dogs at work selflessly serving all of us in every imaginable capacity and behind them are our breeders.

A Return To Palm Beach, Akc Announcement, Long Distance Judging Approvals...

ne would have hoped that both the Staff and Board would have learned their lesson about how to present new and different ideas to their constituents after the illfated presentation made by the then head of the North Carolina offices John Lyons with regard to the pet store plan to increase registrations many years ago. Indeed to this day AKC is paying the piper for the reaction of most to a plan that was never quite understood. If it had been properly presented it could have been a financial boon for AKC and was well within both the Mission Statement and most people’s concept as to how AKC should act as a registering agency. Now comes the announcement of this new doggy daycare project, which dealt solely with the real estate aspect of locating in a building in a rather inaccessible part of Manhattan’s west side near the Piers where Westminster is held as well as other touristy type events are booked as well. It was a bombshell sort of announcement emphasizing real estate instead of explaining about the project, which AKC hopes to make money from and how it fits into AKC’s mission statement. Whoever was responsible for laying the groundwork for this latest money venture for AKC certainly needs a lesson in understanding the mental-

ity of AKC’s constituents particularly when it comes to new ideas being presented to them. If AKC is really interested in getting itself in the pet sector of the American public and keeping their constituents happy as well, a better approach in announcing these projects should be conceived to assure a more favorable reaction than the doggy daycare centers project is receiving.

ou must know by now I am totally against this AKC Canine College and its emphasis on approving judges for more and or new breeds based on a computer analysis of a dog instead of the “hands-on” approach. This socalled “long distance learning” idea is totally an antithesis to any kind of understanding of livestock judging and in my opinion and others should be abandoned before any more monies are spent for this project. Believe me try and get a cost factor from anyone at AKC and you will hit a blank wall--the Board particularly is not being the least bit transparent about the costs of the LLC’s doggy daycare center, nor its dog collar project or this long distance learning project called the Canine College. Take all the monies being spent on those three projects alone and use them to promote the purebred dog and I think registrations would increase to the point that some of these ideas could be dropped in the altogether. Now I read this Canine College has sent out a judging survey of sorts, which I find very difficult to understand at all. It seems Continued on page 56

never lost their interest or enthusiasm for their chosen profession and never got tired of sharing stories of “days gone by”! In addition to showing the world, to the bitter end, that they knew how to trim and condition a terrier… Anyway, for most of us this interest is a lifetime addiction. But I still believe that for the majority, we have all had to overcome problems at some early stage, which kind of “hardened” us and made us even more determined to make it. And I suspect that is something most of the breeders with lasting success have in common. Constantly ready for new surprises and challenges. I cannot talk about my early years as a trimmer and exhibitor without including the name of my friend Hans Lehtinen, who sadly left us a few weeks ago. I will never forget the first time I showed under this Finnish judge. It was in Stavanger, Norway, the year must have been 1963 or 64. I had of course heard of this man a long time ago, mainly due to the fact that he was the youngest judge ever in the Nordic countries- and the world- I would suspect. Any way- Finnish judges in those days had a reputation for being particularly hard to please and extremely unforgiving- and Hans was one of the worst. At this first show I showed a number of terriers that went ok. Then I enter the ring with a Standard Schnauzer (which happened to be one of his own breeds) and he went crazy. I showed both a Giant and a Std. Schnauzer with leg hair! Very inspired by all those American photographs… I was told off in no uncertain manner that this was not acceptable etc., etc., but he still gave the Std. BOB and even placed her in the group. As time went by and most Schnauzers of any size were being shown the American way, I always teased him that I had been a pioneer in this area, which at least made him laugh. I don’t think any person in any part of the world has influenced an entire generation of exhibitors and breeders more than Hans Lehtinen did in all the Scandinavian /Nordic countries. Showing to him, he let you know where you failed, be it the quality of the dog, the presentation or even the handling. If you had a litter of puppies and had a problem which one to keep, a visit from Hans would be of great help.

My wife, Hans and myself all had purchased and had lots of fun English Cockers from the hugely successful Örlidens Kennel in Sweden. His Örlidens Can-Can was doing well, but it was probably our mutual interest in this breed that really bonded us. I cannot recall any Cockers of his breeding with phenomenal records, but his influence as a “consultant” for several Finnish English Cocker breeders surely contributed to the level that breed achieved in Finland from the late 1960s to present day. You got his opinion if that was what you asked for. Nothing sugarcoated or sweetened in any way. And I still think that those of us who were able to accept and take his advice, however hard it could be, are some of those who still today some 50 + years later are dreaming of one day breeding the perfect dog… But still, although valuing his opinion about dogs immensely, it was other sides of his personality, which added to his attraction. He stayed with us a multitude of times both in Sweden and in the UK. Always going through every dog we had in the kennel and freely giving his honest opinion. Talking dogs, dogs and dogs. Still, when I think of Hans, my favorite memory is when after a local show in Sweden we had a huge group of people staying on the farm- and after dinner Hans suggested we should form a choir! Which we of course did. Hans directing and playing the piano, keeping us going until the early hours. There will never be another Hans Lehtinen – or any other person to call before judging a new breed, who off the cuff will tell you: What makes a Borzoi a Borzoi?? What makes a Finnish Spitz a Finnish Spitz? Or a Finnish Lapphund a Finnish Lapphund??? And immediately he would in words describe exactly what you should look for. But he also was blessed with a great sense of humor, which I personally think is a must to survive in this sphere- At times he could come up with these great critiques. My favorite: commenting on a Standard Schnauzer in Italy as having “too much spaghetti behind”!!! Whatever he meant by that? I regret that I will never be able to find out.

Popularity, personal egos, breeders who refuse to share information, the popular sire syndrome are certainly contenders for this ‘honor’ but I’d have to say health concerns are our greatest enemy at the moment with cancers and pigmentary uveitis (PU) leading the pack,” said Super. “We have a real issue with public education. The Internet is filled with kennels that are not members of the Golden Retriever Club of America touting their puppies, some that blatantly proclaim titles that are not true. They charge exorbitant prices for their puppies and many are lacking breed quality. Our greatest internal challenges are breed integrity and health issues. The national club has made great strides with our Golden Retriever Foundation and the Morris Animal Foundations to find the components of the cancers that are so crippling the longevity of our breed,” said Caro. “We face a serious problem with the diverging paths of conformation and performance lines. A Golden bred to the standard should be able to easily compete in the major types of canine competition. The intentional breeding to win as opposed to breeding to conform to the standard results in dogs that are further and further removed from the breed standard,” said Bornhofen.

In February 2016, Diane Brown, DVM, PhD, DACVP, assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation (AKC CHF). As the largest nonprofit funder of health research exclusively for dogs in the world, the AKC CHF has changed the face of canine health and veterinary medicine by funding over 800 grants for scientific research totaling $36 million since the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inception in 1995.

r. Brown assumes the responsibilities of her new position with a unique and extensive set of qualifications. She is a board-certified veterinary clinical pathologist, who holds a DVM and PhD in pathology from Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She has served as a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School, as Director of the Comparative Clinical Pathology Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital, and as a consulting pathologist at the University of Colorado. She has served as the Chief Scientific Officer for the AKC CHF and Morris Animal Foundation. She holds an affiliate faculty position in the Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She has held prior affiliate faculty appointments in the veterinary schools at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Colorado State University and Purdue University. She also has experience in the corporate world as former Senior Pathologist at Eli Lilly and Company. Dr. Brown began her veterinary career as a small animal practitioner four years prior to beginning her residency and PhD program. She completed a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fellowship in the study of genetic diseases shared by human and veterinary patients. Because she believes in the importance of training the next generation of scientists for animal health, she teaches and mentors students interested in pursuing training and careers in biomedical and veterinary science. She also has served as a board member and volunteer veterinarian for service dogs.

n the following interview, Dr. Brown discusses her goals for her new position and how her unique qualifications will help her achieve them. She also describes her vision for the AKC CHF’s future and shares her thoughts on how to meet the nonprofit organization’s greatest challenges. I’d like to begin with a brief discussion of your background and its ramification for your new position. To that end, what were your responsibilities as the AKC CHF’s Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), a position you held immediately prior to your new appointment, and how will those responsibilities facilitate the transition to your new role as CEO? As AKC CHF CSO, I had direct oversight of the Foundation’s research and education strategy. What this means is I directed research program areas, identified areas of greatest need for canine health, and monitored progress on grants already awarded. In my new role as CEO, I continue to have responsibility for the scientific programs of the AKC CHF and with our Program Manager Samantha Wright will implement the administration of funds and contracts for research; disseminate information about the Foundation’s work to a variety of audiences; and update processes to ensure quality, relevance and impact of the studies we fund. I also work closely with the Chair of our Scientific Review Committee, and in collaboration with this talented committee, external peer reviewers, principle investigators, our board of directors, and staff to ensure the strategic application of donor funds for the benefit of canine health. How do other aspects of your unique qualifications prepare you for the position of AKC CHF CEO? I believe it’s the extent and diversity of my education, life and work experiences matched with the needs and mission of the Foundation that have prepared me for this opportunity. Those most relevant experiences include working with people and animals as a clinical veterinarian, veterinary specialist and biomedical researcher, teacher and mentor; management experience that includes team and project leadership; and roles as laboratory director and chief scientific officer. I also have experience in a variety of working environments that include clinical practice, academia, industry and nonprofit animal health and service sectors. These experiences allow me to bring an extensive knowledge of important canine and human health issues, and the “how” of research that entails interacting with investigators, and medical and veterinary institutions. You have a background in comparative and translational medicine. What exactly does that mean and how would your expertise in this field be helpful in your new position? Comparative medicine to me is a way to improve understanding of health and disease by focusing on biological and pathophysiological differences and similarities between species; then, trying to understand these comparisons. We so often hear of advances in human medicine and biomedical research that result from the relatively vast amounts of funding available for human health research compared to canine health research. I’d like for us to more effectively draw from such advances--how can the knowledge gained about humans serve as a model for the dog?—to effectively target these ground-breaking advances toward canine health. Additionally, there are so many diseases that are identical or nearly identical between dogs and people

that what we learn in the dog can help to improve the understanding of human health and vice versa. These intersections need to be highlighted and more fully understood. Dogs are members of our households; we share so much with them including environmental exposures, food and water intake and daily activities. Comparing their health to human health and then translating it into meaningful outcomes is an important goal and one that veterinarians have recognized for decades. My entire career has been one of making comparisons–it’s inherent in being a veterinarian that we train across species. Then to take it a step further I’m a clinical pathologist and, again, that specialization in particular knows no species boundaries. I take a holistic approach to my veterinary patients, the cells I look at under the microscope, the diseases I study across species, and the value of cross-disciplinary approaches to complex problems. This is how we learn and how we advance our understanding by applying these findings to solve problems. What other areas of your experience should prove helpful in the execution of your new responsibilities? The experiences I’ve had working with other nonprofit organizations help me understand the different needs for our Foundation compared to for-profit organizations. The intersection between canine and human health always resurfaces, such as in my experiences working with service dogs for the disabled. In addition, my background in teaching and mentoring, from high school science students to veterinary and graduate students to technical staff to educating clients about their dogs’ health issues have prepared me to communicate across diverse populations. How would your background in the corporate world, as a pathologist at Eli Lilly, be helpful? First, I learned the unique “language” of industry, which allows me to join these conversations effectively when we are talking about drug development or intellectual property for example. Second, industry necessarily cross-communicates. You cannot work in a silo in industry and drive successful outcomes. What I mean by this is in order to be effective; working with cross-disciplinary teams is a necessity, as are running efficient meetings, measuring outcomes and delivering clear and timely communications. The AKC’s Press Release concerning your appointment as CHF CEO states that your “role will be to cultivate the Foundation’s research and education strategy in collaboration with its board of directors, scientific review committee, external collaborators, principal investigators and staff to ensure strategic, responsible and innovative application of donor funds to uphold the Foundation’s Mission to advance canine health.” What exactly does that mean and how do you intend to accomplish it? The bottom line is that we will continuously survey the landscape to assess the needs and opportunities for advancing canine health and be flexible and responsive in steering the Foundation to meet these needs and to take these opportunities. This takes a full team of committed, motivated individuals working together and bringing their passion and knowledge to the table, knowing they will be heard. The first few ask you to compare different types of menus, which is totally foreign to me anyways. I guess they are looking for designing info? While this process may be preferred to phone tutoring--have you ever heard of such nonsense in your life as phone tutoring to approve judges-where is this Board coming from? I am not too certain long distance computer judging is any answer either. The new judging approval processes have resulted according to the Board Minutes in a dramatic increase in applications for “wannabes” that cannot be denied.

e did not go to Crufts this year for personal reasons and based upon what we heard about some of the judging it’s just as well. Reports about the BIS Westie have been outstanding but some of the other reactions were anything but pleasant--a group winner co-owned by the judge’s sister!!!! A questionable GSD

so allegedly crippled moving I can hear that Jemima Harrison woman already condemning all purebred dogs--how did it pass the vet examination one must wonder- and a controversial Toy winner health wise as well. No announcements this year about being bred for form and health is what was reported to me anyways. Instead we went to the Palm Beach Kennel Club and saw some nice dogs and many, many old friends and acquaintances. Best first night was the Pug shown by Esteban while the next night his assistant who shows his own Boxer was Best--both lovely and deserving exhibits. The venue which is called, as I recall, the South Florida Fairgrounds, is a great indoor site that is both air-conditioned and with large rings. The Committee headed by its President Hector Hector is a hard working group of snowbirds and year-long residents of the area who all deserve the thanks of

the Florida dog show going public for the way the show is run. You may recall that years ago there was a terrible Delegate fight and the application of Palm Beach to become a member club was turned down for what were in my opinion ridiculous reasons which revolved round internal Board feuds. This was a huge disservice then and I would like to see this kennel club if it is interested re-apply again. I saw any number of nice exhibits but fell in love with a 13 inch Beagle dog I saw as well as a pretty Bulldog bitch - proper size and lovely face for me. It was great seeing Lou Auslander there who is as chipper as ever and who has not lost his wicked sense of humor at all as well as Jess Bontecou, who looked great as well. Also in attendance was Johnny Paluga of Tedwin fame so that all in all many good old memories and thoughts were re-visited at the show. The judging panel was above average I thought, which is nice to see in this day and age when some of the panels are basically just filled to make up a judging schedule whereas this panel had some good thought to it. All in all a really nice weekend, which we would have missed had we gone to Crufts. As a side note, Stanley and Lynette Saltzman were at this show of which they are members as well. I always enjoy seeing them as we go down memory lane discussing AKC and old friends as well. One thing has not changed and that is they are as up to date as ever and never reluctant to take a stand about anything. Our conversations can become heated and heavy for sure and that’s one of the reasons I like seeing them at shows-not frequently enough for me that’s for sure.

Rebuilding for the

future T

he Detroit Kennel Club is coming upon its 100th year of our All Breed benched dog shows on June 25 & 26, 2016. To celebrate this special event, our centennial show will be held in memory of a great dog man and true gentleman, Mr. Erik Bergishagen, who passed away in August 2015. We are calling upon our dog family to help support one of America’s oldest dog clubs whose mission has always been to provide public education of purebred dogs and their remarkable versatility. We’ve had the opportunity to relocate from Cobo Hall in Detroit, MI to the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, MI. It is here where we would like to rebuild and re-establish The Detroit Kennel Club as the groundbreaking show it has been in the past. The Detroit Kennel Club has been a solid part of the dog community, holding annual benched dog shows celebrating the purebred dog. This is an opportunity to assure the continuation of this institution. In 2015, in an effort to stay current, we re-established our show location and show format. Now we need your help to keep doing what we do so well: educate the public, nurture understanding and offer a place to come together for the canine community. he recent decision by “The Pet Shop Boys,” the new moniker given to those responsible at the AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB for going into the retail pet business, is not being greeted with open arms by the fancy. Thinking that the monies spent on this endeavor could be better spent on promoting pure bred dogs instead of investing in dog walkers and groomers, like helping dog shows that are being squeezed out of major cities due to the high rental prices. For example the Detroit Kennel Club. These shows in major cities are a big public draw, which in turn helps us fight the animal rights people who promote shelter dogs and bad mouth pure bred dogs. A recent mailing by the American Kennel Club sent to their judges, requesting ideas for the kennel club judges’ college, had examples written in Latin, causing some confusion to those who received the mailing. A cancelled trip to Crufts turned into a visit to the PALM BEACH KENNEL CLUB, a show I hadn’t attended in over twenty years. It was good to see transplanted friends who live year round in Florida. Among them, the ever youthful FRANK SABELLA, JOHNNY PALUGA, LOU AUSLANDER and PHYLLIS BOOXBAUM, who, going along with her late husband DONALD’S wishes, brought all of the show photographs that were sent to him over the years to be given to those who were in the photographs and any interested person in a particular breed. In addition to seeing DONALD photographed through the years, one got to see many old friends and top-winning dogs long gone. PHYLLIS, by the

way, looks fabulous and is planning on moving a little further south to West Palm Beach to be nearer to her many friends in the dog world. A calendar change left the upcoming back-to-back HATBORO DOG CLUB without a venue for its dog shows. According to JOHN CONSTANTINE, the club will hold their dog shows at the BURLINGTON COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS in Columbus, New Jersey for one year only. The club will return to its old location the following year. All of at DOG NEWS send our deepest sympathies to American Kennel Club president DENNIS & SUSAN SPRUNG on the passing of DENNIS’ beloved mother SHIRLEY SPRUNG. GARY CARR, judge of several breeds, has passed away. Together with his wife, SUSAN, a multiple group judge, they bred top winning and specialty winning Tibetan Terriers under the Salishan prefix. staff, our board of directors and scientific reviewers, the researchers, our industry partners, and our donors. The same press release quotes you as saying “The body of scientific work funded by CHF and its dedicated donors over the past 20 years has laid an impressive foundation from which we will continue to build, grow and innovate to solve the unmet medical needs of all dogs.” What specific plans do you have for accomplishing this? Biomedical research is moving very quickly with significant advancements coming at us constantly. We need to be ready to respond to these advancements and we will do so by being creative, flexible and timely. We need to consider and actively solicit novel, innovative and cross-disciplinary approaches to both longstanding problems and emerging problems that impact the health of all dogs. We must be willing to be collaborative, to build bridges and to share resources. For example, we recently awarded a significant grant [to a researcher] to take a novel approach to address hemangiosarcoma, a devastating form of cancer in dogs for which there has been relatively little treatment progress since I graduated from veterinary school. Research is expensive. To undertake this costly research project, it took our staff working with advocates from three diverse breeds--Golden Retrievers, Boxers and Portuguese Water Dogs--to pool their resources, overcome potential individual differences and work together for the greater benefit of dogs. This type of approach lets everyone, who cares about their breed and about all dogs, help us to achieve more. The reality is that biomedical research, whether in genetics or orthopedics, cancer or behavior, is costly–good work takes real money. I see the Foundation as the steward, who fosters and oversees the best work with the resources available and seeks novel ways to expand those resources and this important work. What other goals do you hope to accomplish in your new position? I believe that a major factor in accomplishing the long term goal of healthy dogs is training the next generation of scientists, who will meet the health needs of dogs. Funding for training to specifically address animal health is sorely lacking, and advancements in medicine mostly happen as a result of sound scientific research. I’d like to see us grow our programs in training canine health researchers and clinician-scientists. Recently, we have teamed up with the AKC to fund and administer training programs for canine reproductive health research. How else do you plan to accomplish this goal? We have excellent, truly top-notch partners, including the AKC, Purina, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals [OFA] and Zoetis. I believe we can grow and build upon these partnerships, identify areas of overlap where we can work together for better outcomes, identify new partners and [thereby] increase our ability to effect change for canine health research. Everywhere I go I have the opportunity to meet people amongst the diverse and passionate members of the dog fancy; the research, medical

and veterinary communities; and the all-encompassing dogloving public. People truly care about dogs and their health and well-being. They want better answers to their questions. Breeders and members of the Parent Clubs and Foundations are committed, knowledgeable and contribute much to the improvement of canine health. We will accomplish building on our solid foundation by educating our constituents about the productive work of the Foundation; by listening, building trust and bridges amongst our constituents; by providing reliable, timely, communications; and by funding impactful research across therapeutic areas and populations. In your new role, are they any specific contributions you personally hope to make in the advancement of canine health? I would like to see a more innovative, cohesive and collaborative approach to better health research and, in particular, for canine health. As a foundation focused on the wellness of dogs, I believe the AKC CHF truly can be at the forefront of influencing change. Let’s not allow hemangiosarcoma to be a death sentence. Let’s understand why lymphoma rates are rising at an alarming rate. Let’s prevent Lyme disease and other infectious diseases from causing a healthy young dog to become lame or die from kidney failure. Let’s be sure the next generation of dog lovers, breeders and competitors has the best minds answering their questions and caring for their dogs. Is there any particular field of research you believe the AKC CHF should place a greater emphasis on in terms of providing funding for it? Yes. While there are many important areas of need, emerging infectious disease is one example. One needs only to turn on the news or read the popular press to understand the change in global health because of the growing spread and transmission of disease, from SARS to MERS to influenza and now to the Zika virus. In veterinary medicine, we also watch for the spread of infectious diseases such as rabies ... and have historically monitored livestock and more recently wildlife. Dogs may be similarly impacted however. Given our close proximity to them, we need to pay attention. Many infectious diseases can occur in and cause disease in both humans and dogs and some are zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted between humans and dogs. We need to understand these diseases, learn how to prevent and treat them and, importantly, to implement better surveillance for diseases in dogs. Incidence rates of diseases in dogs are sorely lacking. I will give you a couple specific examples of work the AKC CHF is doing in this area. First, we have current funding that is seeking to not only understand incidence rates but to provide resources and practical recommendations for “prevention of infectious disease at dog shows and areas where dogs meet and compete.” This is a collaborative project funded by the OFA and AKC CHF. We expect a publication and white paper will be forthcoming in the next few months that will be of immediate use to the veterinary and dog communities. Also, within two weeks of my assuming the role of CEO, we launched an initiative to address tick-borne diseases in dogs. These diseases Continued on page 97

are numerous, widespread and impact canine and human health. The AKC has partnered with us in this important effort by providing dollar for dollar matched funds for any donation to this initiative up to $250,000. We are taking a three-pronged approach with this initiative: to raise awareness and educate dog-owning communities about these important diseases; fund much-needed research; and find new ways to diagnose, prevent, and treat these diseases before they become debilitating or cause death. [Readers can learn more at www.akcchf.org/ticks.] The findings from this effort also may be informative to human health and thus be another example of One Health research. How else do you plan to continue the AKC CHF’s involvement with One Health Research? We . . . have projects in cancer, personalized medicine (pharmacogenomics) and collaborative work between veterinary and public health researchers to study respiratory and skin diseases, to name three current areas in One Health research in addition to what I’ve already mentioned. We will continue to participate in national discussions on One Health and comparative medicine and oncology and seek and fund the best projects to benefit both canine and human health. What do you believe is the AKC CHF’s greatest challenge(s) in the future? Reaching all of the people in all the different constituencies that care about dogs, and meeting the most significant unmet medical needs for canine health and well-being. How do you plan to meet those challenges? Through increased outreach, clear messaging, excellent research, and increased funding. We are working on a number of new ideas and will find the best and the brightest to join us in our fundraising and outreach efforts. Throughout this interview, you have mentioned the need for more dollars to devote to research. Certainly, funding is an important issue for any non-profit organization and especially for the AKC CHF. Do you have any new ideas for generating increased donations? We do and we are implementing these ideas–so stay tuned! I know people will donate when they care, and I know people care about their dogs. Now I need them to know about our Foundation, to understand that the focused work we do and have done specifically for canine health is what’s behind many of the advancements they’ve seen in canine health in the past 20 years of the AKC CHF’s existence. As an example, I was reading the two recent issues of Dog News that came out in conjunction with the Westminster Dog Show. Three of the articles on canine health and well-being--those being on epilepsy, [the negative impacts of] early spay and neuter, and [9/11] search and rescue dogs’ health--all cited studies funded by the AKC CHF. This exemplifies how relevant, timely and im-

pactful our funding has been and more dog-lovers must be made aware of this fact. Readers need to know that without our funding, these studies may never have been done. Dog News, through [its] reporting and interest in the AKC CHF, is helping us to raise such awareness. I truly believe that increasing funding will allow our Foundation to responsibly, and with the highest integrity and quality, continue to lead the way to healthy dogs. We will identify and drive research projects for the most pressing needs for the health of all dogs. We will meet the unique health needs of purebred, working and all diverse dog populations. And we will capitalize on the intersection between canine and human health and well-being. If people know the AKC CHF was behind this work; then, they will want to join us. We are taking a more proactive approach to reaching those who care . . . by implementing a flexible approach to meeting the needs of our donors, clubs and individuals to address canine health research. It’s not one size fits all--We have recognized that so we can bring the right people together to achieve outcomes. Are there any procedural changes you would like to see implemented? For example, are there any changes you would like to see made in the way in which the AKC CHF decides on which research projects to fund? We already have implemented important changes since I came to the AKC CHF as CSO. For example, we have increased the funding level for pilot studies to encourage the identification and generation of preliminary data for new/innovative ideas that need proof of concept and preliminary data to substantiate and inform the right research approach. We have an outstanding Scientific Review Committee and pool of external experts, which we have been able to grow and diversify to help us review and identify the best projects. We are gathering advisory panels that include researchers, clinicians and members of the dog fancy to discuss particularly complex issues and identify the best path forward for the greatest likelihood for success. We are addressing the need for continuation funding for our most innovative and productive researchers; increasing the rigor of expert peer reviews; and providing oversight and review for relevance to our focused population–dogs–by using an internal Scientific Review Committee made up of experts that represent canine and human health, the dog fancy, and the scientific research communities. I believe in constant evaluation and continuous improvement—a necessary cycle that never ends. I believe in the educational opportunity of every interaction. I believe in building bridges, looking forward and, while it’s important to understand the past, not looking backward. Is there anything else you would like to add? I have only been able to address the tip of the iceberg with this initial discussion and would love to continue the conversation as developments at the AKC CHF unfold in the future.
