THE NEW BOARD MEETS
Well the so-called new Board consisting of the three newly elected directors met for the first time last Monday and part of Tuesday on April 11 and 12, joined of course by the other 10 Board Members. The only truly new member was Bob Amen while both Messrs. Battaglia and Gladstone are anything but strangers to the Board having served previously. Both bounced back from prior defeats as well as one-year retirements due to the term limit adaptation of the Delegates. Next year Messrs. Davies, Goodman and Menaker will be forced to take at least one year off with both Mr. Menaker and Davies expected to re-run, despite protestations to the contrary for Board terms in 2013. Although Mr. Menaker loudly and heartily denies that he will run again his decision will hopefully depend upon next years election and who runs and whom the Delegates elect. This could no doubt play a major role in the Menaker decision. One would also think whomever the Board votes in as Chairperson will also affect the Menaker decision as certain people may be looked upon as interim replacees while others may be considered more permanent in nature. From what these pages are hearing the manipulating has already begun with certain board members taking subtle—perhaps not so subtle— sides. It should prove to be an interesting year with one would hope the main focus being on the needs of the corporation and not the power plays of furthering oneself within the corporate structure. Unfortunately there are some personalities on that board which will find it difficult to do anything much more than to promote themselves instead of AKC which is an unfortunate fact of life. In any event and in Executive Session the Board thankfully approved the four executive officers so for at least another year continuity in thinking and action should remain somewhat constant!
INTRODUCING NEW BREEDS
If it were not so serious a problem it would have to be considered “funny-ha-ha” to compare the reactions of the exhibitor/breeder to those of the judges who get to judge a breed in its early introduction in this country. Somehow the powers that be in America have determined that so long as you are a group judge to which the new breed is appointed one has the right whether or not they have an interest in the new breed or not to adjudicate upon the merits of this breed. This is one of the great fallacies in our present judging approval situations— the potential for harm done to a breed by judges in the early days of recognition. Judges should be held to the same high degree of preparedness for these old but new to us breeds prior to approval. We have so few really breed expert type judges in this country that to extend this kind of thinking to the newly approved breeds only compounds the problems of the American judging approval system. Tuning into a correct type—presuming that there is a correct type in every breed— is difficult enough for the more experienced judge. Witness the judge who on one coast or area awards a group or best or even a breed to one type of breed exhibit and then rewards the exact opposite type within the same breed the same award or awards in a different part of the country. This lack of breed type

consistency in judging dogs foments confusion and promotes questions not only about a judge’s ability to adjudicate at all but even more basically questions their perception of what any breed should look like. In establishing a new breed it should be more than a judge’s desire to keep group status, which is the predominating influence in wanting to judge this new breed. It should be an interest and understanding of the breed first and the keeping of the group second.
AN INTERESTING IDEA
Gretchen Bernardi in last week’s QUESTION OF THE WEEK raised the possibility of DOG NEWS sponsoring a public debate between Wayne Pacelle of HSUS and Patti Strand of the NAIA. While the idea deserves more than mere laudatory praise the fact is that this kind of a debate by all rights should be sponsored in our opinion by AKC itself and as written last week an ideal time for it should be at or before Meet the Breeds. Sorry to say that so far after dropping the “hemlock” to the powers that be virtually no signs of an uptake are in sight. If another week goes by without any response it will be followed through in an effort to get AKC so involved. If nothing continues to happen these pages may be forced to take the entire matter into its own hands with help one would presuppose from Ms. Bernardi herself. The concept of such a debate with all proceeds going to the AKC Humane Foundation could prove to be a fascinating venture, don’t you think.
THE CANADIAN JUDGING SITUATION
No matter your opinion of the Canadian judges and how their all-breed judges rarely and with certain major exceptions, which have been clearly delineated by AKC, stack up against our all-breed judges the fact remains that no Canadian judge with the exception of those singled out years ago may judge more than 8 all-breed shows in one year although there is no limit on specialty shows. There is a list of those Canadian exempted years ago who may judge an unlimited number of all-breed shows. It would appear that there may be a lack of follow through insofar as certain people are concerned at AKC in enforcing the 8 show limit. From where these pages sit the list should have been updated years ago, as many of the people on the extended list are either dead or incapacitated while newer and more talented people from Canada are being ignored. On the other hand so long as the rule is in effect it should be enforced one would certainly think!
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Patti Haines has accepted and will speak at the HSUS Health Conference despite the fears of many that between the joint sponsorship of HSUS and the RSPCA the cards are stacked against a fair presentation of the actual health of the purebred dog. With her able input and that of Fran Smith’s it seems unlikely that despite the fears of some and the true motives of the sponsors a totally one-sided debate will occur. Nonetheless there is the possibility of twisting what is said since everyone is only too aware of the potential actions of both HSUS and the RSPCA insofar as their known anti-breeder attitude is concerned. Be aware and let both organizations know they will not be permitted to get away with any shenanigans as the entire conference will be recorded by at least DOG NEWS in an effort to make the real facts known to both the general public and to our readers as well.

SCULPTURES
FROM BARYE TO BUGATTI Sculptors working in France in the middle years of the 19th century created a style that would endure forever. Known as ‘Les Animaliers’, their work combined their scientific interest with a great sense of romance and desire to represent the realism of nature. This new school of art which they had created extended into the early 20th century and was taken up by sculptors working in other countries, more notably Belgium.

hese were radical times in the art world, particularly in France, and the sculptors were swept along in the mood of change that would eventually dictate how we would look on art in the future. Much of the sculptors’ inspiration for the exotic came from studying animals in zoos which at the time were an integral part of most major cities. Artists and sculptors were for the first time able to see for themselves what these animals really were like, rather than relying on tales told by the few hardy travellers who had ventured into the inhospitable countries where they roamed wild. Les Animaliers were also inspired by the animals they saw everyday; horse, dogs, cattle, sheep, other domestic animals and animals of the chase. Parisian born Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875), son of a goldsmith, was the founding father of ‘Les Animaliers’ and is the most famous sculptor of the French Animalier School. His work is less inhibited than that of some of his later contemporaries and successors and many of his models depict violent scenes from nature. His models are technically highly competent and his wild animals were based on studies of wild animals in Paris Zoo, where carcasses were made available for him to study and dissect. ‘From Barye to Bugatti: Les Animaliers’ is the title of an exhibition running until the end of May at the Beelden aan Zee Museum in The Hague, Holland. It features over a 150 works in bronze which show the development of sculpture through the theme of animals. It starts with the romantic realism of Barye, continues with other more realistic 19th century CONTINUED ON PAGE 56

The 2010 AKC Agility National Championship is over and it gave the agility community the opportunity to watch top dogs and handlers compete and thrill us with outstanding performances. The coverage of the event was extensive with Twitter, Facebook, and live video streaming of all the days. Every dog was videotaped when it ran and the handlers could purchase the film of all their individual runs.

here were 42 states represented with Illinois boasting the largest entry at 85, with Pennsylvaniaclosebehindat82butonceagain California was not far behind at 67. It was great to see 97 different breeds represented, including the 2 All American entries. The Border Collies were once again at the top end in entry with 244 but the Shetland Sheepdogs were very close with 222. The single entry breeds were very popular with the audience such as the Affenpinscher, Australian Terrier, Chihuahua, Eurasier, Pekingese, to name a few but the one that caught the exhibitors’ eye for a future prospect was the fast and accurate Entlebucher Mountain Dog. The largest entry to date of 1,136 dogs certainly had their opportunity to perform many times in the four days of competition. On Thursday the very popular new class of Time2Beat was offered and many ran it for the first time and I feel sure they will now be asking their clubs to add this class to the schedule. On Friday the International Sweepstakes Class/ State Team Tournament was held. Those that were hopeful of making the AKC/USA World Agility Championship team were running all out to win as it was an automatic invite to the World Team Tryouts for first place and they all knew that Nancy Gyes, World Team Coach, was in the stands evaluating every run presented. The State Team Tournament brings out the matching shirts from each state and all scores are counted for your state, using the top 4 scores for the day. The winner was California – a state that has not won in the past in spite of always being at the top and then faltering in the final rounds. The jinx is broken and I expect they will be at the top many times in the future. With a total of 1,136 (549 Dogs and 587 Bitches) that ran twice a day on Friday and Saturday, all five rings were needed to move that many dogs through their runs. The largest entry was in the 20” class with 309 dogs running but the 8” class had the most entries to date with 136 and a wide variety of breeds represented. It is always great to see that 95 of the dogs competing were Breed Champions. The interestingly lower number that was posted was only 4 Obedience Trial Champions running; this is less than in the past. One dog in the competition was a MACH 16, what an incredibly consistent, fast dog this must be. On Sunday all dogs ran in the Hybrid round and then the numbers rolled CONTINUED ON PAGE 60

Certain Board Members want to eliminate the job of Field Rep-in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California the jobs of the "retired" field reps have not been refilled, which is considered by many as a 'test' of this decision to eliminate the aforementioned position. My question for the week is whether or not you believe the field reps' jobs should be eliminated. Barbara (Bobbie) J Wood No, I do not think the field reps jobs should be eliminated. I have always found the reps to be a great resource throughout my judging career. They have been very helpful when starting to judge a new breed and I want feedback to let me know if I am interpreting the standard correctly. Provisional judges need them for evaluations as you need a certain number to be granted regular status. New Judges frequently need observations for ring procedure as the opportunity to judge isn't that frequent to establish a routine. We recently had an evening show with some provisional judges who were very disappointed there was no rep present as they had large entries in their breeds and it would have been a great opportunity to be observed. And why would the AKC eliminate all the reps on the west coast where some of the biggest shows are held? Field Reps also give feedback to clubs that can make their show better and more exhibitor friendly as they attend more shows than the average person and they have seen what works and what doesn't. Their knowledge and experience is a true benefit to the clubs and judges they are assigned to evaluate. Donna Richards Wojan And who will "observe" the provisionals? Ellen Charles OMG what a nightmare that would be!! The Reps are the knowledgeable, neutral voice of reason. We need them.
BY MATTHEW H. STANDER 22 Dog News
Bruce R. Schwartz What I think first needs to be examined is the decision making process of the hiring and termination of field reps. That is, are the right people in this position and what is the quality of their performance? When decisions are made, which seem impossible to comprehend to most exhibitors, one has to question if what AKC Management and its customers see as the job of the field rep is one and the same. I think GOOD field reps add to the AKC's visibility at dog shows. They are available to exhibitors and the public to answer questions. I also understand the need to reduce costs. For smaller shows, why not require the Show Chair to complete an open book test about AKC Rules and Policies pertaining to the event so we know these people are somewhat prepared to handle problems should they arise. A rep could be available via phone for more complex issues. Sue Woodle I do not believe the reps' jobs should be eliminated. I do believe the duties should be clearly defined. My belief is that the field rep is at the show to help answer questions about AKC rules and regulations, and see that judges follow the proper procedure in evaluating the dogs. I do not believe they should tell judges which dogs they should have placed. Chuck Winslow Absolutely not! There needs to be a liaison between the Kennel Club and the show giving club. Someone who knows the actual rules and has had experience practicing theses rules and regulations. There is also a need to have someone observe the judges both old and new as the judging for
the most part has become abysmal and hopefully the field reps can become a part in rewarding good judging and slowing down the many judges that are obviously in so far over their heads. We need our field reps. Cindy Savioli The AKC Field Representatives provide a great wealth of knowledge to show giving clubs, judges and exhibitors. It would be a huge loss to not have them present at shows. It will also make it extremely difficult for the judge's application process- interviews and observations. They are a valuable addition to every show and I would hope the AKC would not eliminate these positions. Brenda Newcomb Absolutely not. To do so would be another in a growing list of problematic decisions foisted on the fancy. I have always relied on the reps as allies, liaisons to the AKC and a resource at dog shows. As judges' ed chair for the BCA I rely on them to help me with issues of quality in judging bulldogs. How will we do without them if there is ever to be a judges' program for continuing education successfully implemented? Katie Winters I don t know, unless they are cutting costs.

WHEN I THINK BACK
Wendell Sammet
Ask most any of the show-going regulars about Standard Poodles and the one name that appears on any list of prominence in the variety is always Wendell Sammet and for good - no - great reasons.
by Patricia M. Cruz
W
inner of the very first American Kennel Club’s Breeder of the Year Award in 2002, Wendell Sammet “has dedicated his life to improving the health, temperament and quality of purebred dogs,” said AKC Chairman, Ron Menaker. Ron continued: “While he has won more than his share of blue ribbons and trophies, Wendell has consistently shown that our sport is about much more than that. He is the ultimate embodiment of a responsible breeder.” But, that was in 2002! When the 2009 AKC Lifetime Achievement Awards and the Tiffany and Co. sterling silver bowls were presented, Wendell Sammet was named the winner for the Conformation, Companion Events and Performance section of the annual award. Recognition of his lifetime devotion, dedication and passion for the sport and his beloved dogs. In 2008, he was again honored by being inducted into Purina ProPlan’s Anne Rogers Clark Hall of Fame, joining Pat Craige-Trotter, Peter Green, Maxine Beam and William Stifel – an honor that “recognizes those who embody the very best of the sport” and named for “Annie”, who died in 2006. Becoming active in dogs after World War II, where he fought in the Battle of The Bulge and where was a prisoner of war for six months, Wendell founded “Dalmatia” in 1950, finishing champion Dalmatians and actively serving the breed and breed club to this day. This dedication carries over to the Poodle Club of America, as well. In the early 1950’s, he was asked by Mrs. Henry T. Kaiser to breed and exhibit her white Standard Poodles for her “Alekai Kennels” in Hawaii.
Sterling Forest Gardens, mid 1970’s David Gammons, Richard Bauer, Peter Green, Pattie Proctor, Joe Vergnetti, and Wendell at a Tuxedo Park Show there. 26 Dog News
In 1984, Wendell eventually took over the entire operation, renaming it “Ale Kai”, concentrating on breeding for health, temperament and all-around good quality pets. “Too many people try to make the whole litter into champions. To me there can be only one. All the others should become quality pets,” quotes Wendell. So, when asked what makes Wendell “think back” to the great ones, he was eager to share the name of one of his favorites. Ch. Tambourine De LaFountaine. “Thinking back to the 1960’s, Ale Kai had purchased a white Standard puppy from Puttencove Kennels. ‘Tammy’ was Canadian bred, sired by CH. Puttencove Promise. I admired ‘Tammy’ for her true sound Poodle temperament, always willing to please but when she did wrong, she was embarrassed. Her type was the picture of Poodles of the period. She was medium-sized, 23” tall, wellbalanced without exaggeration, squarely built, with correct density of bone. She carried the correct curly coat with the correct harsh texture. And, this pleasing body was topped off with a long, chiseled head with underjaw, a black nose and bright, black eyes facing forward. ‘Tammy’ was not only a quality Poodle when posed, but she possessed a normal trot, the correct forward gait.” “Tammy” was not only a favorite, but “I feel she introduced me to this dog show world. She was one of the Poodles I selected to establish white Ale Kai Standard Poodles for Mrs. Kaiser,” said Wendell. Going Best of Breed from the classes at Westminster Kennel Club, when classes were open only to those dogs who qualified to show in the classes, “Tammy” beat six specials and went third in the Group to finish her championship. The following year, “Tammy” was Best of Breed and second in the Group. No stranger to the Groups at Westminster, Ale Kai Kennels won groups in 1969 with Ch. Ale
Kai Marlaine and in 1988 with Ch. Ale Kai Airy, and back-to-back wins in 2003 and 2004 with Ale Kai Mikimoto on Fifth, coowned with Karen LeFrak. All with Wendell on the end of the show lead. So, for Wendell, the “beat goes on – every win is a thrill” and when he is not seen ringside, he can found on the pages of Karen LeFrak’s latest children’s book. Karen followed her first two children’s books “Jake the Ballet Dog” and “Jake the Philharmonic Dog” with “Best In Show”; and, there is Wendell on most of the pages, doing what he does best, encouraging and helping even the youngest fancier, always with a great smile and a gentle word. There is only one Wendell and how lucky we are that he cares to spend time with us – that he cares enough about the dogs to ensure their health and future well-being; that he cares enough to share his knowledge and love of the sport. Check out “The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog” by one of Wendell’s former clients, Yorkie exhibitor, Anne Serrane. His foreward to the book, along with Julia Gasow’s, speaks volumes about his dedication to the sport. In his own words, at his Hall of Fame induction, he said he thought he “was getting too old for this” but, quickly added “I still have more coming”. How foolish we will be if we don’t take advantage of all Wendell has to offer us? How foolish indeed!!!!!! Thanks, Wendell. See you at the shows.

Off The Leash What type of legislation is more threatening to dog owners, breed specific bans or limit laws? What are dog lovers to do when faced with both?
O
wners and breeders across the country are often faced with one or the other, so they can all empathize with their brethren in Saginaw, Michigan, who are facing both breed specific legislation and a separate ownership limit proposal. It’s as if animal rights extremists have infiltrated the ranks of city legislators and are throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the city council in the hopes that at least something sticks. The Saginaw City Council is seeking to declare five dog breeds as “dangerous” and limit all dog ownership to three dogs per household. While these types of proposals are nothing new, at least the Saginaw City Council deserves some style points for originality. Perhaps inspired by David Letterman and his famed Top Ten List, it has somehow come up with a list of “Top Five Dangerous Dogs”. The list as currently worded is as follows: “Pit Bull”, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Bullmastiff (Presa Canario) and Alaskan Malamute. Astute observers will notice that there are six breeds of dogs on that list, or, more accurately, five breeds of dogs and the generic term “pit bull”, which, we’ve come to expect, means any breed of dog that law enforcement or animal control may think resembles any of the bully breeds—American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terriers, etc. This list is obvious cause for concern for myriad reasons, not the least of which is because it doesn’t specify whether or not Saginaw City Council members believe that the Bullmastiff is the same breed as the Presa Canario. If they don’t know the difference or failed to do requisite research in order to identify these breeds, such as contacting the leading authority of canine matters in the country, the American Kennel Club, or any of the 25 All Breed clubs in the state of Michigan alone, then what information will law and animal control officers be armed with to aid in determining the breeds they are encountering and if they should be considered dangerous? Also troubling is that according to the ordinance, “The City Manager may deputize and authorize any person of his/her choosing to write and issue citations for violations of this ordinance.” There’s no mention of what qualifications are necessary to issue such citations and if the city council doesn’t know the difference between a Bullmastiff and a Presa Canario, there’s good reason to be alarmed. If it weren’t such a serious threat to responsible dog owners, one would be tempted to laugh at such a preposterous proposal. But for those who own dogs with a large skull, it’s no laughing matter, because their dogs may be classified as “dangerous” simply based on the subjective interpretation of their appearance, or on the judgment of someone with a personal vendetta or agenda. As currently worded, a dog must only have the physical appearance of any of the breeds on the list to be declared dangerous. The ordinance states, “The ‘list’ shall include any dog that by physical appearance could be believed by any reasonable person to have sufficient physical or temperamental characteristics or behaviors to be a “mix” of any of the breeds listed or a “mix” with a non-listed dog where the mixture exhibits the dominant physical appearance of a dog on the list, and any other dog that has the substantial physical characteristics and appearance of those breeds on the list.” With that type of language, there isn’t a mutt alive that will safely escape a description on the “hit list”. Furthermore, the list will be updated each year. Will it be a Top Ten List next year? Top Twenty? Top Forty? If a beagle nips at an intruder or a child that taunts it, will it land on the list? Any dog can bite, thus any dog may be deemed dangerous and end up on such a list. Under this proposal, owners of breeds that appear on the dangerous dog list will be required to pay a $20 registration fee and
By Shaun Coen 30 Dog News
post a prominent sign on their property that must be visible from the street indicating that they own a dangerous dog. In addition, these so-called dangerous dogs must be kept in a pen or kennel with sides that are at least four feet high and the City Clerk must be notified within one business day if the dog has escaped, attacked someone, been sold, has died, has been permanently moved from the city or if there has been a birth of an offspring of the dog. So, basically, the City Council and those who support such legislation (i.e., the Animal Rights extremists), want to identify and track owners and breeders, force them into paying fees and make expensive modifications to their yards or homes and subject them to possible harassment. Those who violate the Dangerous Dogs provisions will have to pay a civil fine for a first offense of $100, a first repeat offense will set one back $200 and the second repeat offense or any subsequent repeat offense will cost $400. Any breeder or owner of German Shepherds, the breed most likely to be assisting police in their vast duties — bomb and drug detection, homeland security, border patrol, search and rescue, cadaver dogs — want to put down roots and pay taxes in Saginaw, Michigan now that the housing bubble has long burst and there’s a glut of inventory on the market? Not likely. For those that don’t mind being brandished as owners, breeders or hoarders of dangerous dogs and think they can withstand the smearing of their reputations, they should be aware that under a separate proposal in Saginaw all dog owners would be limited to owning three dogs over four months of age—regardless of breed. So, sorry Yorkie breeders, it doesn’t sound like you’re really welcome in Saginaw, either. There will be an exemption made for those who currently own more than three dogs, and they will be allowed to keep them, but in the future, no more than three dogs. There will be other restrictions, too. Dogs will not be allowed outside a kennel or fenced yard unless it is securely leashed with a lead of adequate strength and dogs must never be tethered. Dogs will not be allowed to be kept on a porch, patio or any part of a house or structure that would allow the dog to exit on its own volition. And, a person may not be a “commercial dog breeder” or “broker” without registering with the City Clerk and obtaining a business license. The terms “commercial dog breeder” and “broker”, however, are not defined in the ordinance.
T
ake a look at the cover date of this week’s issue in case you think this is a joke. Unfortunately, it’s not. This is not a silly April Fool’s prank; you can’t make this stuff up. These two ordinances pose a serious threat to the rights of individuals to responsibly breed and own dogs of their choosing. The cover date of this issue is April 15th, tax day. There’s no better way for dog owners and breeders to send a message to the Saginaw City Council than to email them your intentions of fighting these proposals to ensure their demise or else taking your dogs and all the tax dollars you and your dogs generate for the city and moving out of Saginaw. Inform City Council members that BSL hasn’t worked wherever it’s been enacted and in fact has been repealed in many places. Aurora, Colorado is considering a repeal this week because BSL is not an effective way of addressing irresponsible dog owners. Mayor Greg Branch can be reached at anngreg@chartermi.net and a list of Saginaw City Council members’ email addresses can be found at http://www.saginaw-mi.com/Government/Departments/ CityCouncil/. There are plenty of cities that welcome you and your dogs and your dollars. Here’s a list of the top ten most dog friendly cities, as provided by www.dogfriendly.com: San Diego, Portland (OR.), Austin, Northern Virginia, San Francisco, Boston, Orlando, Salt Lake City, Charleston (SC) and New York.

AND MORE
SELECTIVE VARIETY DESIGNATIONS, A SHORT, UPDATED ‘APPLE’...
T
he basic refusal of the Board, the Staff and the Parent Club Committee of the Delegate Body to publicly discuss (thereby ignoring) the issue of continuing to permit breed variety distinctions to compete BOTH on the breed and group levels is in my opinion one of the most grievous derelictions of duty perpetrated on the show going exhibitor which exists in our conformation world today. I grant you this is a very contentious issue but it must be faced forthwith. Consider the fact that there are more than 30 breeds which have class divisions based on size, color or coat types that compete for a single set of points in each sex and have one representative each in its Group. Of these 30 breeds, 9 are permitted MULTIPLE sets of points towards making up their championship with the exact same breed standards excepting of course the aforementioned size, coat or color differentials and all have at least multiple group designations! The 9 so anointed breeds are Beagles, Bull Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Collies, Dachshunds, English Toy Spaniels (which are furthermore misnamed as well and should be called in the States as they are elsewhere in the world King Charles Spaniels), ManchesterTerriers and Poodles. As an example at the next show you attend watch Cocker Spaniels and possibly in the ring next door watch Great Danes. The Great Dane Open Classes are divided by color and just as with the Cocker Spaniel the breed standards are the same except for the color differential. Yet the Cocker Spaniel competes for six sets of points across the three varieties and the two sexes, while the six colors of Great Danes compete for a single set of points in each sex! I ask you, is that fair? I’m not advocating that all Poodles for instance compete in the same classes for a single set of points but why do American Eskimo Dogs, CONTINUED ON PAGE 64

W
e first attended the Take The Lead event at the Kentuckianna Cluster two years ago. We enjoyed the event and it ran smoothly. However, the 2011 event was an entirely new experience and a stunningly successful one. This year the attendees had so much to do. First came the silent auction. Various dog-related items were displayed on tables in a reception room at the newly restored Henry Clay building in downtown Louisville. This Kentucky-Derby-inspired event proved to be everything one expected and more. The venue, the downtown Henry Clay, a building restored to its classic beauty with stained glass ceilings, ornate plaster moldings, and baroque cloth wall-adornments provided a spectacular back drop. The evening offered fine dining, unbelievable live auction items and virtual horse racing. After passed hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and silent auction, Jason (an official Churchill Downs bugler) called over 300 attendees to dinner in sterling fashion. As we entered the main ballroom, everyone was struck by the beauty and attention to

Speedway Classic of the Carolinas
The new Speedway Classic of the Carolinas with Four All Breed Shows, Four Obedience Trials and Four Rally Trials is quickly becoming one of the most talked about venues in the Southeast.

ohn Shonenman, president of Greater Monroe KC, Speedway Classic of the Carolinas Cluster Coordinator, along with his right hand man Bob Sizemore, started the ball rolling on Monday, March 28th. Lori Schonenman, cluster hospitality chair, headed up coordination of all the judges transportation for the entire 4 days, arriving and departing from Charlotte Douglas International, a super job she does, coordinating down to each detail, making absolutely sure all were accounted for. Hank Dingfelder spearheaded RV Parking and mentioned next year he’s bringing his SchH III dobe and a 12 gauge to assist him and Dan Huffman. Members from all three clubs, Greater Monroe, Columbia and Salisbury KC, do a combined man force effort, controlling parking, pooper scooping, keeping the flow of traffic moving and keeping aisle open for safety, insuring a safe venue for all exhibitors. The experienced teams from Columbia KC, to mention a few, Don Teague as chair, president Janice Nepita, Memory Armstrong, AKC Delegate Barbara Shives, got the show started for Thursday and Friday. Let’s not forget Richie Wiggers, Teresa Villa, and Niki Nepita, who assisted Bob Busby laying out the indoor grooming area, providing plenty of room for everyone. Donna Otero of Greater Monroe KC had a great selection of vendors, not just doggy stuff but “Sweet Lorraine” was there with her awesome homemade fudge, she brought “Sweet Chip” along who was roasting almonds all weekend, the aroma was heaven sent, throughout the show arena. Roast them almonds, Chip! Charlotte Dog Training Obedience and Rally Chair David Trone took it by the horns for Thursday and Friday, Greater Monroe KC handled the performance for Saturday and Sunday, Martha Milligan, Greater Monroe KC vice president, sets a pace hard for CONTINUED ON PAGE 72

sculptors such as Pierre-Jules Méne, Emmanuel Frémiet and Christophe Fratin and moves into the 20th century with the impressionism of Rembrandt Bugatti and his Antwerp Zoo colleagues Albéric Collin and Josuë Dupon and finishes with the semi-abstract modernist work of François Pompon. The sculptors’ love and appreciation of the dog is intertwined throughout much of the exhibition. By the 19th century the dog was established as an integral part of the chase and other field sports and its charms as a domestic animal and companion were rapidly being appreciated more widely. There are some well-known favourites, most of these are sporting dogs, emphasizing just how important this group was in the 19th century and the regard in which they were held. Barye’s standing Basset Hound first modelled in the 1830s and listed in the sculptors’ first catalogue in 1847; Frémiet’s couple of Bassets called Ravageot and Ravageode who belonged to Napoleon III; Barye’s Greyhound about to pick a hare; Méne’s Hounds bringing down a Stag and others. Less well-known is Frémiet’s Griffon bitch nursing her three puppies. This breed is one of a myriad of hunting breeds little known outside their native France. Showing great empathy for the subject sculpted is another bronze by Frémiet, ‘The Wounded Hound’, a seated Bloodhound carefully licking a bandage around the top of its right foreleg. Moving forward towards the end of ‘Les Animalier’ period a virtual life-size near matching pair of reclining Great Danes with cropped ears, one with its forelegs straight out, the other with its forelegs crossed. Modelled by Georges Gardet they were commissioned for the Chateau in Chantilly and originally carved in marble. They were so well received that four sizes were cast in bronze. There is a fully illustrated hardback catalogue to accompany the exhibition obtainable through the Sladmore Gallery website, www.sladmore.com. out on the computer screens to let the exhibitors know who made it to the final round free and clear after their three rounds of competition and could go and claim their finals shirt provided by AKC and which ones would have to win out in the one last chance of the Challengers round. The Challengers round is a percentage of dogs in a height class where the first place in each height gets moved into the finals round. There is nothing to gain by being second so all runs are very exciting. Then the final championship round is run with the teams having hopes of becoming the winner which allows you to list NAC (National Agility Champion) in front of your dog’s name. The finals course was judged by Scott Stock, who designed a course that required very technical work at the beginning of it but a flat out speed race at the last 5 obstacles. If you didn’t have a “go on” command that your dog understood to run the obstacle ahead of them without you even close to them then you had better be able to run as fast as your dog or faster! Seated at ringside was John Lyons and Ruth Crumb, Delegate and Chairman of the Obedience, Agility and Tracking Committee, and they had more than one exhibitor at the finish line all most end up in their laps as their chairs were in direct line with the last obstacle and the handler had only a short distance to stop their all out speed. Six people realized their dream in the regular height division (8”, 12”, 16”, 20” 24” and 26”) and in the Preferred classes (jumping one class lower than regular height 4”, 8”, 12”, 16” and 20”) five dogs and handlers were honored. To view the winners and their stats that got them to the NAC, go to www.akc.org/events/agility.
T
he usual announcement of where the next year’s Championship would be held was not made. Contract troubles were the comment, location to be announced soon. Hopefully the drive will be as beautiful as it was this year with the mountains, horse farms and rock formations. The town of Lexington offered many great restaurants and hotels that were reasonably priced and had unlimited grass and walking areas for the dogs. The show site was rolling hills of many acres. The agility venue took up the horse stalls for crating and the walk between the two arenas was lengthy but the crating was between the two buildings for convenience. The finals had two rings with stadium seating and all could easily watch and cheer for their favorites. The use of the new method of each exhibitor having a bar coded badge as they entered the ring which told the computers what dog and handler were running made the event run faster and smoother than ever before. Modern technology won out. I was privileged to be one of the speakers to the 151 – 4H kids that took a field trip to the Nationals on Saturday to find out what agility was all about, at least they started at the top. There 60 Dog News
were also nearly 20 Juniors that participated this year, the youngest was 7, and some made it to the finals and the winner of the 26” class was a former junior handler. Youth is needed in every sport and agility has definitely caught their attention. The publication in the Gazette of the stats for 2010 was certainly a boost for the Companion events department. Agility was once again right on target for growth with 2,461 agility trials, which was 169 more trials than the previous year of 2,292. The number of entries was 868,102, which were up 71,243 over the previous year. The numbers of entries in agility this year will without a doubt surpass all the venues as it clearly is headed to the million entry mark. The number of titles earned was an astounding 38,434, which was 4,859 higher than the previous year. The All American dogs did not have a full year to compete but even so they recorded 1,231 titles. The agility trial that has been ranked number one in entries is one of my favorite venues and locations; the Big E in Springfield, Massachusetts and the club is Leap Agility of Central Mass. They had the bragging rights of 1,543 entries per day, which was 171 more entries than in 2009. The top three rankings went to trials in Massachusetts followed by a Kentucky trial. To view all the statistics on agility and all other venues you can go to: www.akc.org/pubs/index.cfm .

whose breed standard also includes Toy, Miniature and Standard size division, compete for only a single set of points? What I do think is that the question must be addressed and a solution found to treat the breeds equally. Any discussion of Group Realignment which does not take on this very difficult question ignores the realities of dog show life and is doomed to failure. How the Parent Club Committee fails to take up this problem publicly is shocking while the Board and Staff ignore it as it is far too contentious for them to even consider. But someone had better wake up and smell those roses, hadn’t they!!! How do you react to the delegate-judge who when hired by a club tells them the only way they will accept an assignment is if a donation is made to a charity of their choice? Personally I consider this a violation of the spirit of the rule, which prohibits a delegate/judge from being paid. To my way of thinking this is a form of payment for sure even though it ultimately goes to a good cause and not into the pocket of the delegate. Of course it does eliminate the “cheap” judge theory for the club looking to save money but it still to my mind violates the essence of being a delegate and the rules under which a delegate/judge should operate. I know of several instances where this is being done and while I have no intention of outing anyone I would hope that the people so doing would reconsider the practice just as the clubs themselves should refuse to hire the delegate/judge under those sorts of conditions. I would strongly suggest that if you are in the City for a few days you see War Horse for sure, which I told you about when it first opened in London. The Book of Mormon of course is just a great musical with crude language so be prepared. I have not seen Catch Me If You Can (and I don’t think I am going to go) but everyone I know and respect enjoyed this musical tremendously as well. I am listening to the reviews on that one—also not to miss are the straight plays Jerusalem, Kin (which closes this Sunday) and of course Good People, all of which are straight plays and not musicals. It certainly seems that Broadway and Off-Broadway have made great strides this last month and will continue into April and May so there’s a lot of good theatre going on for sure. the Garden, is a new and really top notch hotel reminiscent of the Four Seasons on West 57th Street called the Setai Hotel. I would consider making reservations before fashion week gets its hold on the place, which runs concurrently with the Big W if you want a really nice place to stay at which is also close to the Garden! In the hotel is one of the leading restaurants in the City called Ai Fiori--a lovely top notch place to eat at whether you are in the City for a visit or for Westminster alone— maybe a good place for the Meet the Breeds people as well-just a little advance on The Bite of the Apple!!! And, oh yes, I did attend the Saturday show at Springfield. The show giving club was as unidentifiable as any show usually held at Eastern States. I was as unimpressed as usual and promise you I will never go there again! Best In Show was a lovely Samoyed in a really tough lineup!

detail. The tablecloths were adorned with exquisite painted flowers; the actual centerpiece flowers added a delicate fragrance and were beautifully arranged and highlighted with tall silver trumpet vases on many of the tables. The atmosphere was truly captivating and immediately set the tone for the more than special evening. The giant screen on the stage was a wonderful touch for the evening. The large screen served a two-fold purpose and was truly effective. The horses—and their saddle pad numbers---were big enough to see clearly and it felt like you were actually at the race track. Mr. Michael Faulkner, emcee extraordinaire, ran the live auction between each of the six races, and the descriptions of the items were easy to read and the bidding was fast and furious at times. Take The Lead Board Members dressed in racing shirts and hats, served as cashiers, and ran the betting windows. Replicas of the twin spires of Churchill Downs flanked the “betting” area. The racing energy was intense at times, with the crowd jumping out of their chairs, cheering for their favorite horses. There were many big winners through the course of the evening, with the biggest winners being those who have been and will be served by Take The Lead, as this event raised a record amount of donations. From the attendees’ perspective, kudos and bravos to everyone who purchased a ticket and to the entire group of racing teams for their generous support. We all know how much planning and hard work go into an event such as this one. It was really a special evening. We all look forward to Take the Lead Goes To The Races 2013. anyone to keep up with. The agility and rally participants were having a great time. Performance exhibitors loved the new turf, commenting, “It was fantastic!” Pam Harmon chaired Salisbury KC All Breed Fun Match on Friday night, 30 minutes after BIS, giving exhibitors extra opportunity to practice. Salisbury KC finished the weekend on Sunday. Bob Busby, as chair, brought along a great team of SKC blueshirts. They were everywhere. SKC hospitality chair Stacy Crayton and her mom Crystal Finney do a great job. SKC president Lynn Meeks keeps all the show committees cooking for SKC. Vicki Wyles began Sunday morning with a prayer service at 7:45 AM. Salisbury KC brought in a little added attraction for the exhibitors on Sunday to close out the weekend, The “Whitetop Mountain Band” from Grayson County, Virginia. (For those that don’t know, that’s the mountains down here). Everyone seemed to really enjoy the one hour lunch break with a little Bluegrass thrown in. Terry & Jackie Stacy, along with Frank Murphy, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Jewett were enjoying front row seats (I think Jackie knew most of the words to the songs). Bobby Schonfeld and fiancee Minna-Liisa Koltes were toe tapping along. A few exhibitors did a little mountain shoe shuffle. Ann Dunn asked her husband Bradford to dance (bless that girl!) I even saw Dr. Andrew Kramer, Gene Blake and Malcolm Moore, movin’ and groovin’. Margo Klingler & Debra Thornton can’t wait to come back. The Pug went Best on Thursday, the Boxer on Friday, the Standard Poodle on Saturday, the Norfolk Terrier on Sunday! The Speedway Classic of the Carolinas will prove to be the most exciting new venue in the Southeast. Come have some fun in November, we are inviting an International panel of judges, offering a number of independent specialties, supported entries, sweepstakes, reduced entry fees for puppy and bred by, and considering an R&B band for Saturday night! We believe the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center is the finest venue available, great RV parking on blacktop, fields of grass, you can park close enough you don’t need a cart, plenty of indoor grooming adjacent to the show rings. Ask any exhibitor who was there!

GOSSIP Column D
OG WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA has released the name of the person who embezzled $71,563.34 from the organization. After confessing in writing and on videotape, following months of evidence gathering, the former treasurer RUE CHAGOLL was charged with larceny. In this day and age, I find it hard to believe that one person was responsible for their banking needs and sole access to their funds. These “Dog Writers” should have read their own reporting of the embezzlements of dog club treasuries around the country and changed their banking habits long before this happened to them. From the information given to me, this man (whom I never heard of before or which publication he is associated with) cannot afford to reimburse the organization. Did that surprise the membership? After all, most people steal money because they don’t have any. Another hard costly lesson to learn and to think some clubs are resistant to have their officers bonded and have multiple signatures on all club checks. The Board of Directors held its meeting this past weekend in New York. Present was the newly reelected STEVE GLADSTONE, who had recently undergone heart bypass surgery. Nothing earth shattering happened at the meeting except that the four executive officers, president DENNIS SPRUNG, chief operating officer JOHN LYONS,

chief financial officer JIM STEVENS, and executive secretary JIM CROWLEY were reelected for another year. Whether the economy is getting better or with the addition of the grand champion (I still dislike the name of this money making title) competition, or a combination of both, confirmation entries rose three per cent for the first three months of this year. When you add agility there was a five per cent overall increase. LOUISE & ERIC SMETHURST are visiting New York from their native England. ERIC is no stranger to these shores, as he was the guiding light that propelled Pedigree Dog Food to the fore of American dog shows. Upon his retirement from Pedigree, he was the chairman of the CRUFTS committee. Speaking of England, the dog is soon to become the favorite pet of the U.K., displacing the cat for the first time since 1994. ANN & RON SORRAGHAN are flying over from Australia for a short visit on their way to Moscow where ANN will be judging. I guess when you live in Australia, it doesn’t make a difference which way you circle the globe. Congratulations to TONI & MARTIN SOSNOFF on the birth of their newest grandson JOSHUA, son of daughter MINDY & MICHAEL ESSROG. Birthdaying AARON WILKERSON, KEN WALL and KATHERINE SUTTLE.
