THE DOG NEWS ANNUAL
Editorial
Our Changing Dog World The relationship between man and his so-called “best friend”— the dog, has become increasingly confused in American society. Indeed all too often the dog is considered more of a human being today; certainly more so than the worker of the past. s the country has become more and more urban so has the dog become more and more of an urban species. Even in the suburb’s it is fairly safe to say that confinements for dogs are now considered necessary as the dog has become a staple as a part of the house if not the bed itself. These intimate arrangements between dog and owner can give rise to sort of a canine identity crisis which then overflows into other aspects of society as well. Many of the traditional social break downs which individuals are faced with in their lives seem to coincide with not only the growth in the dog population but in the values which people place on their dogs psychologically and financially. Some go as far as to offer proof of the health-benefits of dog ownership to the point of making the animal a panacea as an all-round stress reducer which in many instances it (oops, we mean he or she) may so act.
A
Whether or not one consciously believes a dog is a person is secondary to the fact that all too many people treat their pets as though they are one. According to a recent study concerning the importance of the social-bonding hormone Oxytocin it was concluded that its presence between mother and child relates to just about any interaction involving pair bonding, social affiliation and trust. More specifically, its involved with the gaze between infants and mothers. Researchers at Azabu University in Japan found last year that the dog’s gaze at its owner increases the owner’s oxytocin level. The study while providing the key to understanding the myriad health benefits of dog ownership – oxytocin is a serious stress reducer – also makes scientifically clear what’s obvious anecdotally: The dog is an honorary human, accorded many of the same considerations. It can be a surrogate child, brother in arms, solace of otherwise lonely lives. The fundamental work of
the dog, which had been the reason for breeding them in the first place, now seems to have been replaced with the need to provide companionship or social support on its part. Of course that does not mean that all dogs and all people fall into the above mentioned categories.
Factually and fortunately there are a large number of people who use their dogs for their original purposes and also have expanded their interests to include agility and rally events. The conformation world is unique in that most people who travel on the dog show circuit use their dogs for a multitude of purposes which include both work and companion type events. It is the single pet owner who seems to fall into the trap of overly humanizing the dog and who encourage the extremists within the animal rights movement. One of the problems today is that these type movements have become magnets for monied activists who mistakenly think they are supporting the “good cause” when in fact they are not! We must positively and aggressively get our message out to the public at large and encourage them to join us in our endeavors to promote not only the health and welfare of the dog but the right to breed our dogs and the right to own them as well.

his was the year that saw the consequences of the much-vilified BBC television program, Pedigree Dogs Exposed really hitting the fancy. The Kennel Club’s reaction has been viewed with sadness in some quarters – rapid revision of age-old breed standards, banning of close breedings and aggressive marketing of its Accredited Breeders Scheme, which though admirable in its essence still is met with suspicion by some breeders.
The face of dog shows has changed noticeably, mainly due to the total absence of Pedigree and its previously taken-forgranted largesse. Thankfully other dog good companies, notably Eukanuba, seem to have remained faithful to the sport and continue to invest heavily in the breeding and exhibiting spheres. The absence of national television coverage of Crufts was deeply regretted though the cognoscenti considered the streaming service provided by the Kennel Club a vast improvement. The findings of the APGAW report did not sit easily with many dog breeders and this, coupled with the outcome of Ofcom’s reaction to the Kennel Club’s complaint about the BBC’s program has left serious dog ANDREW H. BRACE people wondering if the sport they love will indeed survive. Crufts, despite the gloom and doom of the period, was deemed to be a great success. Peter Green broke another record when he became the only person to have won BIS at Crufts and Westminster and judged BIS at the former. His

year end review THE YEAR 2009 WAS A GOOD YEAR FOR AGILITY, GROWTH, GOOD COMPETITION AND A SPORT THAT HAS BENEFITED THE AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB.

by Sharon Anderson
The January 2009 stats began with growth and it continued that way throughout the year.
he year-end statistics for agility were as follows: Number of events in 2009 – 2,292 compared to the number of events in 2008 of 2,147 which is 145 more trials in the year. This was a very positive growth of 6.75%. The number of entries in 2009 was 870,603 versus the 2008 entries of 838,393, which is a growth of 3.84%. A percentage number that was unequalled in any other venue at AKC.
T
January started the agility year with the agility reps meeting unusually early to address many new ideas and preparing for the Agility Advisory Committee meeting which was held in June. The Advisory Committee meetings are held only once every four years and 2009 was the year. The knowledgeable people chosen for the committee proved their love of the sport and made decisions that benefited all in agility. The proposal of a new class would be welcomed by clubs as an additional income maker and by exhibitors as another title to earn and enjoy running with their dog. One of the game-changing decisions made was to remove the Master Agility Championship extra points for the first and second placements in a class – a welcomed change. Continued on page 164

Founded over 30 years ago, The AKC Museum of the Dog located in beautiful Queeny Park in West St. Louis County in Missouri was established to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret art, artifacts and books related to the dog. The Dog Museum now boasts the country’s largest collection of canine art with more than 2,000 works of art in its holdings.
I
t all began in 1971 with a meeting held by members of the Westminster Kennel Club who wanted to pursue establishing a museum dedicated to improving the life of the dog through humane education, awareness and added knowledge on the history of the dog. In 1979 The American Kennel Club Foundation was formed to help support these aims, and by 1980 The Dog Museum of
America/American Kennel Club Foundation was incorporated. Mr. William F. Stifel, then AKC and Dog Museum president, and William Secord, the Museum’s first director, enthusiastically took on the challenge of planning the organization’s first exhibit. The Museum Collects opened on February 8, 1982, at 51 Madison Avenue in New York City and was followed by a glitzy black tie dinner at the 200 Fifth Avenue Club in Manhattan. CONTINUED ON PAGE 186

AND THE JOY OF
PUBLISHING
ANN SERANNE BY SHARON SAKSON
Ann Seranne was a food genius. She wrote more than two dozen cookbooks and was executive editor of Gourmet magazine during the 1960s and ‘70s. She worked as food editor of the New York Post, food consultant to NBC television, and wrote food articles for Family Circle
and other magazines. Among her friends were American chef icon James Beard and New York Times restaurant reviewer, Craig Claiborne. Both praised her as ‘’a brilliant cook.’’ She was also a Yorkshire Terrier breeder and judge, who raised more than 60 Yorkie champions at her Mayfair kennel.
Elsworth Howell
was a publishing genius. He founded Grolier Enterprises, a successful publisher of children’s books, educational texts and encyclopedias. In 1957, he secured the right to publish an obscure physician, Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel. It was a visionary decision; “Dr. Seuss” books have sold 222 million copies. In 1961, Howell founded his own publishing house, specializing in books of his private passion: dogs. Howell Book House catered to the dog fancier. Howell encouraged experts to write in depth about their favorite breed. He got Rachel Page Elliott to put her popular seminar on gait and structure into book form. He courted breed experts who could write well. The breed books Howell published are worth hundreds of dollars today, if you can find one.
lsworth contacted Ann Seranne on July 12, 1976, about a review she had written for Dog News of one of his books, “The Complete Yorkshire Terrier” by Joan Gordon. “Your fine, creative writing and style impressed me deeply,” he wrote. “And one of these days, you and I must get together on an original Seranne work.”

A IS The headline on this story may come as a bit of a shock to people in the insular world of dog shows or field trials. But, to a growing number of exhibitors, breeders and puppy buyers, a championship is no longer enough. They want dogs or puppy parents that have met both the conformation and performance standards for the breed. BY M.J. NELSON
n the not too distant past, say 20 years ago, these “facts” were generally regarded as gospel: Show dogs are worthless when it comes to doing what the breed was developed to do and field dogs are so godawful ugly you can hardly stand to look at them. Like most labels, these were based on rumors, scraps of evidence or a single experience which then, in most people’s minds made them worthy of being chiseled in stone. And, in fact, there was more than a tiny kernel of truth in these sweeping condemnations of the capabilities of show dogs in the field and the conformation flaws exhibited by field dogs. Quite frankly, there were a lot of show dogs that left a great deal to be desired as working dogs and there were also a lot of field dogs that were truly hard on the eyes.
I
Slowly things began to change starting with tiny baby steps following the development of the first non-competitive field testing programs by the AKC, CKC, the UKC through its affiliate Hunting Retriever Club and the North American Hunting Retriever Association. As the first retrievers with conformation championships, mainly Chesapeakes, Flat-Coats and Curly-Coats— breeds that do not have the numbers to be extremely successful in the highly competitive world of retriever CONTINUED ON PAGE 210 WHILE CHESAPEAKES are the only retriever breed that can still produce dual champions like DC AFC Genny’s Yakity Yak Don’t Talk Back, the hunt test program caused a quantum leap in the number of Chesapeakes that were conformation champions and also had a field title.

And as important and necessary as these recognitions are let us not forget the people and the history of both the breeders and owners of these two great exhibits.
The
Yes is the fourth Standard Poodle to earn the bragging rights to be called a member of this great club preceded in time by her grandfather Ch. Lake Cove That’s My Boy and her great-great-grandfather Ch. Whisperwind On Carousel. This kind of amazing use of line breeding by her breeders Randy Gareen and Dennis McCoy (and cobreeders the Laceys) is a solid example of what dog breeding should be all about – a careful selection and understanding of lines and genes which result in improving a breed carefully, selectively and healthily. Her owners Toni and Martin Sosnoff of Atalanta poodle fame have been long time concerned breeders of the Poodle and together with Tim and Yes have formed one of the most formidable and trustworthy teams of people and dogs to have been developed in the modern dogworld age. Teams like this are what help perpetuate our sport in the long run, and I am happy THE DOG NEWS ANNUAL • 74
to say that the “Sadie team” falls into a similar category as the team developed through the “Yes” relationship. Sadie is now the second Scottish Terrier to join the club, both bitches, and of course has set her mark both nationally and internationally. Competently and ably conditioned and handled by Gabriel Rangle she is an outstanding show animal whose presence is expected to be continued in the near future for sure. Gabriel of course has matured into one of the most respected and consulted terrier men in America, if not the world, whose opinion of a dog is solicited near and far. Combine this with the acknowledged breeding talents of Anstamm Kennels and Mary O’Neal (Anstamm of course being the team of Cindy Cooke and Buffie Stamm) and you have magical results insofar as the breeding of Scotties are con-

cerned. And on the subject of magical of course are Sadie’s owners, the Mussers, Amelia and Dan. To say that they are two of the nicest people in the sport is to understate the situation; but of interest, of course, is the background of Mr. Musser whose uncle George Hartman was one of the most respected judges in America in the ‘40s and a director of AKC as well. Considering the backgrounds of these dogs, their owners and their breeders all of which and whom are steeped in the long term values and traditions of our sport one would have to conclude that not only is our conformation world growing stronger by encouraging dog show competitions but that the dogs and teams of people associated with them are adding allure and strengthening the foundation of the sport itself. Home of the Breed’s Top Winners ince joining forces more than 15 years ago and creating a partnership that combined the Yarrow Kennels of Beth Sweigart and the Venerie Kennels of Pam & John Beale we have produced innumerable champions, All Breed Best in Show winners and National Specialty Best of Breed winners. We hit the peak when we partnered with Elizabeth Matell of the famous Cracknor Norfolk Terrier kennel in England. This union brought the incomparable English & American Champion Cracknor Cause Celebre to the United States. “Coco” as she is called became the top winning Norfolk Terrier of all time capping that achievement becoming the Number One Dog of All Breeds in the United States and returned home to her native England where she was named Best in Show at the Crufts Dog Show. She is also the dam of the Number One Norfolk Terrier 2006, 2007, 2008 All Systems in the United States, Ch. Cause For Celebration and the Granddam of our newest star Ch. he race for Dog of the Year has been a steady one and with a few shows to go it was clear that the Wire Fox bitch, Ch. Blackdale Carousel, could not be caught, thus owner-handler Andrew Goodsell could travel to California for the Eukanuba World Challenge as winner of BIS at the FCI European show with no anxiety. Bred in the famous Irish kennel of Harry O’Donoghue, Ruby went to Andrew as a mature bitch where she became one of just two house dogs and consequently receives 24/7 attention from her devoted owner. This
“
is reflected not only in her superb presentation but also the way she animates for her master. Runner up to the Wire was the brindle Boxer male, Ch. Winuwuk Lust at First Sight. Bred in one of the most consistently successful Boxer kennels in recent years, Max is co-owned by the kennel’s octogenarian founder along with her two much younger partners, Tim Hutchings and Julie Brown, who always handles Max to full advantage. It is interesting that our two top dogs have been piloted by people who are very young in British terms, which has to be good for the sport. Interestingly, both these two were produced from a regime of close linebreeding. If the Kennel Club takes its breeding restrictions a stage further, it could well be that such pedigrees would in the future be outlawed, a sad prospect.
Top Gundog – or Sporting to you – is the Cocker Spaniel (I just can’t bring myself to use “English” in this context!) bitch, Sh Ch. Dillonpark Ambrogina, owned and bred by Michael Parkinson and Brian Dillon who are again relative youngsters. Her style and presentation is always admired and she fought off tough opposition in her group, especially from a Flatcoat and Vizsla who continue to win well in their mature years. Indeed the Vizsla – Ch. & Australian Ch. Hungargunn Bear Itn Mind – became the first winner of the Eukanuba Champion Stakes. This stakes final also determined who would represent the UK at the World Challenge in Long Beach, and it turned out to be the fourth-placed dog, the Finnish bred and owned Bulldog, Int Ch. Blackhope Brando, as the CONTINUED ON PAGE 144

first three dogs were unable to travel. Top Toy again was the Maltese male, Ch. Benatone Gold Ring, another steered to his many successes by a young exhibitor, Sarah Jackson, who is one more enthusiast whose grooming and presentation is always to be marveled at. Topping the Utility group is the spectacular Dalmatian bitch, Mark Dunnachie’s Ch. Dvojica Voodoo. This charismatic mover ended her career by not only smashing the breed’s record for Challenge Certificates won but also taking another BIS all breeds.
A
nother new breed record holder headed the Hound Group in the shape of Brian and Linda Middleton’s Norwegian Elkhound, Ch. Kestos I Spy at Graythor, a dog that seems to get better with age and always uses himself so well on the move.
“
Finally the Pastoral group leader is another history-maker in Sarah Taylor’s Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Ch Bymil Picture This. Like the Dalmatian, she won her first CC under me as a Junior so I have been delighted to see her go on. Until this year a Cardigan had unbelievably never won a group, but this beautiful bitch did so and more. In December we had Brando and Carousel competing in the World Challenge at Long Beach where Carousel, the Wire, made the final dozen. Whilst there were no direct British connections with Axel, the Bracco who wooed the crowd and Mr Sabella, we can claim that he was the very first BOB winner at Crufts! What 2010 has in store for dog breeders and exhibitors remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, our lot is not going to get any easier with thinly disguised animal rights ideals pervading our every nook and cranny. Dog shows in the UK and beyond now have to fight for survival, that is for sure.

SCJA According to its Web site, the Senior Conformation Judges’ Association was founded in 1983. One of its primary purposes is listed as assisting “our judges when they have a problem with the AKC.” It could be described as an activist, advocacy organization which states its main function to be:
“To emphasize and assist in every way possible with the education of judges, prospective judges, and dog breeders. “To sponsor educational seminars and symposia on a regional and national basis on all phases of judging and any other facet of the dog world for judges, prospective judges, breeders and exhibitors and to work closely with and support the Senior Conformation Judges Association Education Fund. (A separate tax-exempt 501 (c) (3)educational corporation.). To represent the judges’ positions and act on their behalf with all national kennel clubs and other governing bodies pertaining to the promulgation of rules, regulations, and policies concerning all phases affecting the judging of pure-bred dogs and the actions of the individual judges. “To solicit, on behalf of the members, special rates from motels, airlines, car
rental companies, etc., with the aim of reducing travel costs for the benefit of show-giving clubs and ultimately the exhibitors. “To record, honor, and recognize the contribution to the fancy of Senior Dog Show Judges.” Over the years, SCJA appears to have become a virtual oneman show whose tentacles reach into the core fabric of the judging community. Anyone with a complaint against the AKC (in general), its field representatives (in particular), and especially AKC’s Judging Operations is encouraged to contact SCJA where, if deemed appropriate, SCJA will intervene as necessary. SCJA educational efforts operate under a separate corporation – the American Canine Education Fund (ACEF). The ACEF sponsors individual Group Institutes, as well as a general Judges’ Institute (although its 2009 Judges’ Institute was cancelled). Its presenters are usually parent club approved and receive no remuneration towards expenses. The institutes are open to all (including United Kennel Club judges) and not just AKC judges or potential AKC judges.
