COVID-19 changed the way our typical day works and it changes all the time.
Usually a typical day consists of checking emails very early in the morning to look to see what flights have been cancelled and then letting customers know as a matter of urgency. Unfortunately, sometimes a customer is already on their way to lodge when it happens which does make it very stressful. Rebooking involves seeing what’s available that suits both the customer and in the cases of dogs going to new owners, the new owners as well.
Pre COVID, we had a really flexible system in terms of bookings. There were a lot of flights and we were able to book at short notice and also quite far into the future. These days, it’s not like that at all.
Once the office is open, the day is spent with the team taking calls for quotes, bookings or just general enquiries. At the same time, they’re regularly checking emails and responding to the same. It’s a really busy day!
In amongst all of this, we are also out running pet taxis, collecting or lodging animals at the airport which luckily for us is very close to our office. This particularly makes it easier when a flight is suddenly delayed and we need to re-collect the animal and bring it back to our office where we have dedicated areas for them to be in so that they can play, toilet and just generally relax before their new flight. This is also what happens with dogs requiring comfort stops between flights and dogs that require overnight boarding.
Every crate requires full cleaning and sanitising before it is used again so this is part of our daily rituals as well. Hire crates required to be at the airport for those who are self lodging, are labelled with all of the information of the booking in order to minimise mix ups with the freight staff. Some of the crates will fly without any animals as they’re required to be at another airport, so they’re sent out in advance.
The animals are required to travel in a clean crate, so if a lodged animal soils it’s crate, one of our team has to stop what they’re doing and shoot over to the airport and make sure the animal is back in a clean crate before flying. Thankfully most don’t soil their crates before flying, but it can happen when animals have connecting flights too that are quite long (especially young puppies and kittens). We send the majority of the booking confirmations at the end of the day as it’s more efficient to do them in batches.

After the office closes, there is often still work to do where animals need collecting or lodging (as many fly out of business hours) so it really is non-stop every day!

When all is done and dusted, it’s time to wind down to be ready to go again the next morning.
