DOCUMENTARY FILMS AND THE POLITICS OF MEMORY

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the feeling that we live in dark times. Serious crises loom over us. Democracy is in decline. Is it really as bad as it seems or do we exaggerate our fear of climate change, political extremism, polarization and conflict? The best thing we can do is to try to separate reality from propaganda. How we understand the present is the basis for how we create the future. At this year’s festival you can choose among 45 documentaries on a huge variety of topics; from films about how to start an organic farm, living with dementia, or growing up in a suburb in Scotland, to films that investigate huge global challenges such as Artificial Intelligence, or how to get justice for war crimes. The festival has an extensive debate program created in collaboration with our many fantastic partners. We welcome you to take part and discuss with human rights activists, artists, filmmakers, pundits and politicians. You can also enjoy theatre plays, concerts, art exhibitions and performances. The documentary film industry worldwide is in the middle of an enormously creative and productive period. We are in a golden age for documentary film. The number of high-quality films from all over the world is staggering and makes our selection process a truly privileged task. Some films are funny, exciting and moving, while others can be terribly hard to watch. Sometimes we ask ourselves why we should watch films about horrific human rights violations and extreme suffering. Does it do any good?

Our answer is that sometimes it is necessary to see the films that are the hardest to watch. Not only because they’re good films, and even great art, but because we need to know what’s real. We all have a responsibility to safeguard reality. It is not enough to know that it is recorded and stored somewhere. We have to carry history with us to avoid being manipulated by propaganda. This is especially important when reality no longer seems to matter to state leaders. Watching a film about something real is an action in itself. It matters that a part of reality is now present in your memory. Welcome to the 12th edition of the Human International Documentary Film Festival. HUMAN INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL is Oslo’s largest documentary film festival presenting new Norwegian and International documentaries in combination with debates, talks, workshops, art exhibitions, theatre plays and more. LANGUAGE All documentaries are either in English or subtitled in English when English is not spoken. All events in Norwegian are described in Norwegian, and all events in English, are described in English in the festival programme. PALESTINIAN LIFE UNDER OCCUPATION AND SIEGE

HIGHLIGHTED THEME

FILM ADVOCATE A thrilling court drama on the controversial Israeli advocate Lea Tsemel. The unapologetic 74-year-old has spent her whole life defending Palestinians charged with serious violent crimes, and argues that most of these acts of violence are acts of resistance against the Israeli apartheid regime. The documentary follows a 13-year-old Palestinian boy risking life imprisonment for stabbing Israelis on the streets of Tel Aviv, and a Palestinian young woman charged with an attempted suicide bombing. FILM OF LAND AND BREAD

FILM “MY GAZA ONLINE”

Daily, brutal meetings between Palestinians and Israelis in occupied territories. A man stuck in a barbed wire fence has been caught in the act. On his way up a roof to remove a Palestinian flag, he is confronted by the occupant of the house, with a camera. To the sound of cheers from the Israeli settlers in the street below, the uninvited guest insists that the land, and even the house, ultimately belong to him. SEE PG.34

Dokumentarteaterstykket Okkupasjonens fanger, skrevet av Einat Weizman i samarbeid med politiske fanger bryter et tabu i det israelske samfunnet ved å gi stemme til de mest bortgjemte av alle ofrene for Israels okkupasjon: De palestinske politiske fangene i israelske fengsler eller leire. ART KUNSTPLASS, ARTIST TALK: DREAMERS AMONG THE RUBBLE

In total they are about 5000 men, women and children; the Palestinian political prisoners behind the bars of Israeli prisons. Their activism stems from a variety of political and personal motivations. Some detained without any articulated reason, others convicted for terrorist acts. They meet very poorly treatment and are exposed to isolation and torture. How do you stay sane and keep a flicker of hope in such a situation? What legal rights do they possess? And what political strategies lay behind Israeli authorities’ active use of prison cells and torture? SEE PG.81

Ali Jabaly will take you on journey through his artistic practice. This will include the current exhibition at Kunstplass, the open-air exhibition “Dreamers among the rubble” in Gaza and other art projects. Ali Jabaly has for several years worked on art projects related to the occupation of Gaza. He is particularly concerned about the human challenges and the lack of freedom of movement both in Gaza and with the outside world. The exhibition Internal Shadow is related to the situation of young people, while also reflecting his inner emotions and sense of being under siege both psychologically and physically. Ali is breaking boundaries through his artistic expression and use of colours and images. SEE PG.79

REFUGEES: SOLIDARITY UNDER PRESSURE HIGHLIGHTED THEME

FILM MIDNIGHT TRAVELER

Deeply personal insight into life on the run. When filmmaker Hassam Fazili found himself on the Taliban’s kill list in his native Afghanistan in 2015, he, his wife and their little daughters were forced to flee. After asylum refusal in neighboring Tajikistan, the family embarked on the long, dangerous journey to Europe. However, as so many other refugees came to learn, the dangers were not over when they reached Europe’s borders. SEE PG.33

FILM THE REST

Artist Ai Weiwei provides moving snapshots of the refugee crisis. From Turkey to France, from discouraged refugees to xenophobic locals and disillusioned volunteers: Ai Weiwei gives us a clear look at the consequences of the refugee crisis, Europe’s inability to act and the refugees’ hopeless situation. FILM HUMANITY ON TRIAL When the refugee crisis hits Europe, a young Danish man, Salam Aldeen travels to Greece to volunteer. Salam, himself a refugee who fled civil war in Moldova with his family in the early nineties, finds his calling rescuing refugees from the Aegean Sea. But one night while trying to find a refugee family lost at sea, Salam is arrested and charged with human smuggling. SEE PG.26

FILM ANGELS ON DIAMOND STREET Heartwarming tale about a soup kitchen and solidarity in Philadelphia. What happens when an undocumented Mexican family seeks sanctuary in an African-American church in Philadelphia’s poorest district? The church and soup kitchen have roots back to the Black Panther movement in the 1960s, and describe themselves as an activist congregation. When Carmela Hernandez and her children ask for sanctuary, the pastor risks five years in prison for housing them, but she is never in doubt. She says it best herself: “Carmela’s story is our story”. DEBATT KRIMINALISERING AV HJELPERE Tidl. biskop Gunnar Stålsett skapte overskrifter verden over da han rett før jul ble dømt til 45 dagers betinget fengsel for å ha ansatt en ureturnerbar asylsøker av samvittighetsgrunner. Men han er ikke alene. Samme høst fikk Arne Viste ett års betinget fengsel for å ha ansatt asylsøkere uten lovlig opphold for å hjelpe dem,

i Italia ble den tyske kapteinen Carola Rackete fengslet da hun trosset forbudet om å bringe flyktninger fra Middelhavet inn til land. INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM

FILM PRISON FOR PROFIT What happens when a prison in South Africa is to be run privately? In this revealing documentary we get some of the answers. Since 2001, the multinational security company G4S has operated Mangaung prison in Johannesburg, promising humane treatment and development of inmates. But repeated charges of torture and mistreatment of inmates and leaks of surveillance videos prompted investigative journalist Ruth Hopkins to investigate, and her findings, as well as interviews with former staff and inmates, paint an unbridledly brutal and cynical image of a prison run primarily for profit. where both the staff and inmates daily fear for their lives. FILM RADIO SILENCE A hard-hitting Mexican journalist goes up against the State. Journalist Carmen Aristegui is one of Mexico’s strongest critical voices, and has spent her entire career going after state corruption. In 2015, when she was fired from the radio channel she worked for after political pressure, she instead established her own news site, which goes uncompromisingly on the State’s links to the cartels. FILM COLLECTIVE Breathlessly exciting about the discovery of a Romanian corruption scandal. In the devastating fire at a nightclub in Bucharest, 27 young people perished – but in the weeks that followed, 37 more died in the hospitals, of bacterial infections. What was wrong with Romanian hospitals? SEE PG.40

LIVE MASTERCLASS RUTH HOPKINS Ruth Hopkins is an award winning investigative journalist, based in South Africa. She worked as a journalist and editor with the Wits Justice Project in Johannesburg from 2012–2018,

producing content about wrongful convictions, lengthy remand detention, police brutality and various other criminal justice issues. SEE PG.69

ON THE EDGE: CLIMATE AND THE ENVIRONMENT HIGHLIGHTED THEME

FILM MÁXIMA A cinematically grandiose drama about one Peruvian woman’s fight against big business. Máxima Acuña has become a worldwide symbol of the tireless battle against large multinational corporations for the rights to her own land. This riveting documentary follows her staunch attempts to defend her rights facing the world’s largest gold mining company, which through an alliance with the police is pushing to expropriate her farm through violence and sabotage. FILM SEA OF SHADOWS A stirring film on how a Mexican cartel and Chinese demand for swim bladders are eradicating the world’s smallest whales. Off the west coast of Mexico, the cartels hunt for “the cocaine of the sea” – the extremely valuable totoaba fish, sold as a delicacy in China. But in the same totoaba nets, the endangered vaquita whale gets stuck and dies. The attempt to save the vaquita whale leads us deep into a dangerous network of Mexican cartels, Chinese smugglers and corrupt police and politicians. SEE PG.36

John and Molly Chester moved from the big city to run an organic farm, with no experience whatsoever. It becomes a steep and chaotic learning curve to create a farm in balance with nature, with predators and insects, which can meet both flood and drought.

DEBATT GRØNNVASKING: ET NORSK SELVBEDRAG? «Norsk olje og gass-produksjon er den reneste i verden, så det er bedre at vi pumper den opp her.» «Norsk aluminium og gjødsel er grønnere enn andres, så vi har et ansvar for å produsere den.» Det er mange flere eksempler der de kommer fra: Norsk næringsliv er bedre og grønnere enn de fleste andre, skal vi tro dem selv. Shot in stark monochrome, Dark Suns chronicles the hundreds of murders of women, journalists, students, and activists in Mexico since the 1990s, and the insidious culture of cartel violence and state corruption behind them. Oscar shortlisted about a family-run ambulance in Mexico City. Mexico City has 9 million inhabitants, but only 45 official ambulances. The rest is covered by private ambulances, such as the Ochoa family ambulance, where the action-loving 17-year-old Juan is the driver. Every night, the family awaits accidents that could mean money for their next meal, but then they have to arrive at the scene of the accident first, avoiding corrupt police controls along the way. FILM BEHIND THE BLOOD Honduras’ bloody gang wars and those forced to live with it. Honduras is one of the most dangerous countries in the world, but what is life like behind all the bloody headlines? This thought-provoking documentary takes us to the different sides of the conflict: the gang members who commit the heinous violence, the priest who tries to rescue gang members and the journalist who reports on it all. DEBATE URBAN VIOLENCE IN CENTRAL AMERICA In several cities in Central America, the humanitarian situation is similar to what we see in wars. Murders, extortion, kidnappings, rape, forced recruitment to criminal gangs, terrorization of communities, huge economic costs, drug trafficking and impunity have led to a humanitatian crisis in many areas in Central America. It affects access to basic health services, minor infections become life threatening and infant mortality increases. This violence is a major cause of the refugee flow towards Mexico and the USA. Why is violence in urban areas in Central America so widespread, and why is it difficult to provide humanitarian help? SEE PG.72 13

KUNST OG YTRINGSFRIHET

SEMINAR FILMMAKERS/CHANGEMAKERS: RELEVANS, FINANSIERING OG FRIHET Dokumentarfilmer øker stadig i popularitet, på kinoer og strømmetjenester. De kan også brukes som et redskap for å skape umiddelbar og varig endring på en rekke felt som blant annet rettferdighet, folkehelse og miljøkatastrofer. Men er dette deres eneste verdi?

Kulturpolitikken har tatt en mer kommersiell og utilitaristisk vending de siste årene. Kan vi med dette seminaret introdusere en mer visjonær tilnærming til å snakke om og forstå vårt arbeid som filmskapere, historiefortellere og visuelle kunstnere? SEE PG.63

DEBATE THE HATE AGAINST ART: WAYS OF SEEING REVISITED Last year the festival showed Ways of Seeing, a groundbreaking theatre play that addresses important issues related to power and racism. The consequences have been severe for theatre director Pia Maria Roll and the theatre group. In Israel, actor and theater director Einat Weizman has been called a ‘killer of babies,’ because she addresses human rights violations committed against Palestinians. Both Einat and Pia has been heavily criticized and pressured by their own governments, simply for putting up theatre plays that questions the status quo. Pia Maria Roll and the theatre group were attacked not just by cyber bullies but by several politicians in power, including the prime minister. The Culture Minister of Israel has publicly stated that theatres will be blacklisted from public support if they put up Einat Weizman’s plays. They have both experienced threats and harassment as a result of this pressure. SEE PG.86

DEBATT FILMSKAPERE VURDERER YTRINGSFRIHETEN I 2020

Tore Slaatta og Hanne M. Okstad er i gang med et nytt forskningsprosjekt for å utforske hvordan filmskapere erfarer ytringsfrihet i Norge i dag. OPENING NIGHT MÁXIMA, KAMPEN JANITSJAR AND OPENING SPEECH: BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS – A WORK IN PROGRESS?

Welcome to our grand opening night at Vega Scene! HUMAN International Documentary Film Festival 2020 will open with the magnificent documentary Máxima, about the fight against corporate environmental destruction and human rights violations in Peru. Before the screening, we will treat our audience to a little sparkling for all, the music of Kampen Janitsjar, who figures in the documentary Marching Forever and a keynote speech by Katie Redford. The film will be introduced by director Claudia Sparrow. Millions of people around the world are facing violence, harassment and an end to their traditional ways of life because they are living in areas with valuable natural resources. In a battle between huge profits and human rights, people’s rights often lose. People who oppose mining, agribusiness and fossil fuel projects are increasingly being killed, threatened, and criminalized. However; the law can be used as a tool of progress, protecting environmental defenders from attacks and threats against their lives and livelihoods. The film Maxima illustrates this struggle. The awards ceremony is open to all, and there will be a glass of sparkling for everyone when we present the winners of 2020. After the ceremony, from 8pm, we invite you to the festival’s Closing Party on 1st floor, Vega Scene. HUMAN International Documentary Film Festival presents two competition programs; One for new Norwegian documentaries, and one for international documentaries concerning human rights related topics. 11 Norwegian documentaries will compete for the HUMAN Award 2020 and 50 000 NOK given by Bergesenstiftelsen. The international competition program consists of 10 documentaries focusing on human rights issues. The winner will receive The Human Rights Human Wrongs Film Award and 30 000 NOK given by Amnesty Int Norway and The Norwegian Helsinki Committee. With this award we wish to highlight filmmakers’ efforts to make human rights issues better known to an international audience.

In addition, and for the first time, the Norwegian Ministry of Culture’s Human Rights Award for best short film will be handed out at this year’s Award Ceremony. The award goes to the director of the winning film and consists of 50 000 NOK, with the objective to inspire and encourage Norwegian filmmakers to address human rights issue on film and to uncover human rights violations. You can watch the winner films the same night (The Norwegian Ministry of Culture’s Human Rights Award for best short film) or Sunday night (The HUMAN Award 2020 and The Human Rights Human Wrongs Film Award 2020).

GEDIMINAS ANDRIUKAITIS Lawyer by training. He established the international human rights documentary film festival INCONVENIENT FILMS in 2007 and has been the director of the festival ever since. Gediminas has been actively engaged in the field of human rights since 2002, when he started volunteering and working at one of the oldest human rights non-governmental organisations in Lithuania, the Lithuanian Centre for Human Rights.

I 1841 skrev Edgar Allan Poe novellen «A Descent into the Maelstrom» som forteller historien om to brødre som seiler en fiskeskute inn i den kraftige Moskenesstraumen på sørspissen av Lofoten. De blir fanget av malstrømmen, og kun én av dem overlever forliset. I 1980 skrev Philip Glass et musikkstykke inspirert av Poes fortelling. I Descent into the Maelstrom følger vi musikere fra Arktisk Filharmoni til toppen av fjellet Ryten, ved Kvalvika, hvor de fremfører stykket med utsikt over naturfenomenet som opprinnelig inspirerte Poe. Dokumentaren er en hyllest til nordnorsk kystkultur og menneskene som den dag i dag risikerer liv og helse for å holde gamle tradisjoner i hevd, i et landskap som er like ugjestmildt som det er vakkert. En norsk kunstner rekonstruerer sin kafkaeske reise gjennom det amerikanske rettssystemet etter at hennes kjæreste ble arrestert, stilt for retten og fengslet uten grunn i New York City. I 2008 flytter den norske kunstneren Lene Berg til Harlem i New York, til sin partner, en svart forlegger, D. Lofoten, the range of mountainous islands strewn over the Arctic waters of northern Norway, is the setting for Edgar Allan Poe’vs 1841 short story “Descent into the Maelstrom”. Two brothers, fishermen, are caught in the raging waters of the “Moskenesstraumen” and their boat is dragged down into the swirling maelstrom. In 1980, Philip Glass wrote a composition based on Poe’s short story. We follow musicians from the Arctic Philharmonic to the top of Mount Ryten, where they perform this piece overlooking the natural phenomenon that originally inspired Poe. The documentary is a tribute to the Norwegian coastal culture and the people who still risk their life and health to maintain old traditions. After giving the police a statement about being harassed by a neighbor, D was arrested. But what exactly is he being accused of? This led to a series of catastrophic events where D’s implicit trust in the U.S. justice system put everything he cherished at risk. Norges siste gjenlevende mannsorkester, det 90 år gamle Kampen Janitsjarorkester, har en gjennomsnittsalder på 60 år, og trenger desperat å rekruttere nye medlemmer for å ikke dø ut. Men med manko på tilstrekkelig mange unge mannlige musikere – og det at kvinner ønsker medlemskap til det populære orkesteret – gjør at de er nødt til å ta en grundig gjennomgang av fordelene og ulempene ved å opprettholde gamle tradisjoner. Medlemmene i Kampen Janitsjarorkester er redde for at de i prosessen med å redde sitt elskede orkester samtidig kommer til å ødelegge sitt maskuline fristed. Kampen er et sårt, humoristisk og ærlig portrett av en mannsbastion som står i et veivalg på hvem de vil være. Det er en film om sterke vennskap, kjønnsroller i endring og det skumleste av alt: forandring!

Når to malerier fra blir stålet fra kunstneren Barbora Kysilkova tar Oslo-politiet tyvene etter et par dager. Men bildene blir ikke funnet. Barbara deltar i rettssaken i håp om å få noen tips om hvor bildene kan være, men ender i stedet opp med å gå bort til en av tyvene for å spørre: «Kan jeg male deg?». Tyven svarer uten å nøle: «Det er mulig.» Slik starter forholdet mellom en kunstner og hennes usannsynlige muse – som snart utvikler seg til et like usannsynlig vennskap. Den unge og eventyrlystne norske backpackeren Audun Amundsen leter etter en utopisk verden og ender opp i jungelen i Indonesia. Jan Erik Vold er en av Norges mest originale og kjente poeter. Han har spilt inn plater med Chet Baker og Jan Garbarek, og for ham er det fortsatt ikke langt fra tanke til handling. Slagordet «det er håpløst, og vi gir oss ikke» ble et mantra for flere generasjoner demonstranter, og «Kulturuke» fikk hele landet til å le. Han bruker gjerne poesien politisk, og til å sette fokus på urettferdighet og maktmisbruk, som da myndighetene ville sende seksåringen Nathan Eshethe tilbake til et land han aldri hadde vært i. Nå nærmer han seg 80 år, men er fortsatt like aktiv. Men hvem er han bak diktermasken, hvor kommer det store engasjementet fra, og hvorfor er det så viktig for ham at gårsdagens diktere ikke blir glemt?

The young and adventurous Norwegian backpacker Audun Amundsen is driven by his search for a utopian world and ends up in the wild jungle of Indonesia. Here he meets the shaman Aman Paksa and his clan who lives a traditional life, surviving without money, electricity or modern tools. Amundsen is spellbound by their lifestyle and decides to document their harmonic way of life. However, the romantic harmony starts to crumble as modern temptations from the surrounding world lurk behind every corner. Amundsen follows Aman Paksa for nearly 15 years on his turbulent path towards modernity.

Transporteringsdans er et varmt portrett av dansekunstneren Martin Slaatto og hans eldre mor, Margit. Filmen følger utviklingen av prosjektet Transporteringsdans, en unik blanding av dans, kunst og trening. Det krever at utøveren beveger seg på uventede og uvanlige måter, som å flaksefly, smelte og hoppse. Martin er energisk og entusiastisk i sin utrettelige formidling og utøvelse av Transporteringsdans, og hans mor Margit er en viktig karakter i Martins kunst. Samtidig skriver hun selv sine egne svært melankolske og morsomme tekster om det å bli eldre.

I 2006 annonserer det gigantiske amerikanske aluminiumsselskapet ALCOA at de ønsker å bygge sin neste fabrikk I den lille fiskelandsbyen Maniitsoq på Grønland. Innbyggerne ser på dette som en unik mulighet til å oppnå uavhengighet. Årene går og menneskene i Maniitsoq må utålmodig vente på at prosjektet skal igangsettes. Men hvor lenge kan man vente på fremtiden? Vinterens lengsel utforsker menneskelig eksistensialisme og forholdet mellom å være selvstendig og en nasjons uavhengighet. Det er en film om drømmer, liv som settes på vent og den menneskelige evnen til å reise seg igjen. Alt sett fra mennesker som bor og lever i Maniitsoq.

Open Arms is a loving portrayal of dance artist Martin Slaatto and his elderly mother, Margit. The film follows the development of his singular fusion of dance, art and exercise of both body and mind – the Transportation Dance. This requires moving in unexpected ways, like “fly-flapping”, “melting”, and skipping. Martin is energetic and enthusiastic; unwavering in his belief in the potential of his innovation. Margit is an artist in her own right – a poetic writer of precise and heartbreaking reflections on the experience of growing old.

STAY is a warm and intimate film about the daily lives of three people, the fear of losing control and the importance of relationships. The director works at close range, and the result is a beautiful and authentic portrayal with a focus on human dignity and love. It’s about being present, being there – both as family and friends, and as a society.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION PROGRAM Ten documentaries with a human rights focus is competing for the HUMAN Rights Human Wrongs film award and 30 000 NOK given by Amnesty Int Norway and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee. This year’s international competition program consists of ten eyeopening documentaries highlighting human rights issues from Honduras, Mexico and Peru in the West to The Philippines, Israel, the West Bank and Afghanistan in the East. These are films that move, engage and have interesting perspectives on the fight for justice. You’ll get up close to incredible individuals’ unwavering struggle for justice, in the shapes of land rights, freedom of movement, freedom from violence and fear, a rightful justice system, free press and freedom of speech, a healthy environment and a health system for all. We frequently hear that human rights are under threat, but at the same time we should give our support to all those who fight for these universal rights. The filmmakers in this program present immensely interesting narratives with patience, confidence and passion, and we really appreciate their efforts to makes us a bit wiser and a bit braver. A man stuck in a barbed wire fence has been caught in the act. On his way up a roof to remove a Palestinian flag, he is confronted by the occupant of the house, with a camera. The uninvited guest insists that the land, and even the house, ultimately belong to him. Of land and bread is composed of such moments: daily, often brutal meetings between the occupied and the occupied. Through Palestinian eyes, we witness house demolitions, random arrests and nightly house raids, in all their daily brutal reality. The seriousness of the occupation becomes visible in a mosaic of stories, captured on camera by Palestinians in the West Bank and collected by the Israeli peace organization B’Tselem.

An intense insight into what’s happening at street level in the Phillipines during Dutertes hyper-violent war on drugs. Where do you find justice when your president compares himself to Hitler? This breathlessly exciting film dives deep into Manila’s most crime- ridden parts, to give us a multi-layered tale of the deployment of a new chief of police, ordered to curb the rampant killings performed by the local police force. The casualties decrease, the police death squads disappear and justice prevails – at least on the surface. We stay close to the new chief of police, as well as the inhabitans terrorized by the police, and the result is an unflinching look at the consequences of Duterte’s dangerous rhetorics.

Hva skjer når et fengsel i Sør-Afrika skal drives privat? I denne avslørende dokumentaren får vi noe av svaret. Siden 2001 har det multinasjonale sikkerhetsselskapet G4S driftet Mangaung fengsel i Johannesburg, med lovnader om human behandling og utvikling av de innsatte. What happens when a prison in South Africa is to be run privately? In this revealing documentary we get some of the answers. Since 2001, the multinational security company G4S has operated Mangaung prison in Johannesburg, promising humane treatment and development of inmates. But repeated charges of torture and mistreatment of inmates and leaks of surveillance videos prompted investigative journalist Ruth Hopkins to investigate, and her findings, as well as interviews with former staff and inmates, paint an unbridledly brutal and cynical image of a prison run primarily for profit. where both the staff and inmates daily fear for their lives.

Dokumentaren viser på provoserende vis hvor profittdrevet malariabekjempelse har blitt, og hvordan både myndigheter og WHO lar seg presse av legemiddel industrien til å stenge påvist effektiv naturmedisin ute fra markedet.

A stirring film on how a Mexican cartel and Chinese demand for swim bladders are eradicating the world’s smallest whales. Off the west coast of Mexico, the cartels hunt for “the cocaine of the sea” – the extremely valuable totoaba fish, sold as a delicacy in China. But in the same totoaba nets, the endangered vaquita whale gets stuck and dies. The attempt to save the vaquita whale leads us deep into a dangerous network of Mexican cartels, Chinese smugglers and corrupt police and politicians. It will be a battle of life and death, both for the whale and its fighters. The film shows how organized crime and the ramifications of corruption into all walks of life are a deadly enemy not only to locals and journalists, but also to environmentalists and the most vulnerable creatures of the ocean.

How the pharmaceutical industry’s hunt for profit potentially puts millions of African lives at risk. Malaria kills 500,000 people every year. Artemisia is a medicinal plant that has been in use for over 2000 years, and the active ingredient artemisinin is the main ingredient in today’s malaria medicines produced in the West, and sold expensively to African countries. But the plant can easily be grown locally, and research shows that the plant acts as both effective treatment and prevention. The documentary reveals in a provocative way how profitable malaria prevention has become, and how both the authorities and the WHO are being pressured by the pharmaceutical industry to block proven effective natural medicine out of the market.

Polly Jean Harvey har siden gjennombruddet på 90-tallet vært en alternativ kraft i rockens landskap, og har gjennom hele sin karriere gjort uventede kreative valg. Denne dokumentarfilmen løfter teppet og viser hvordan kunstneren Harvey jobber fram anti-krigsalbumet «The Hope Six Demolition Project.» Regissør er filmfotograf og filmjournalist Seamus Murphy som samarbeider tett med Harvey, og hun blir med på hans reiser som fotojournalist til Afghanistan, Syria, Bosnia og Washington. Ut av dette fødes den rå poesien som vi følger hele veien til ferdig album. Since the breakthrough in the 1990s, Polly Jean Harvey has been an alternative force in the rock landscape, and has continuously throughout her career made unexpected creative choices. This documentary pulls aside the curtain, and shows how Harvey creates the anti-war album “The Hope Six Demolition Project.” The director, film photographer and film journalist Seamus Murphy, works closely with Harvey, and she joins him in his travels as a photo journalist to Afghanistan, Syria, Bosnia and Washington. These travels give birth to the raw poetry which slowly becomes the finished album. The film speaks to the nature of art and creativity, regardless of whether you have a relationship to PJ Harvey or not.

The ugly legacy of lynching in the United States. Hideous lynchings of African Americans were not uncommon in the US up until the 1970s. But did it truly end? This thought-provoking documentary digs deep into the case of an African-American 17-yearold who was found hanging from a playground in North Carolina in 2014, which police quickly dismissed as suicide. However, both the family, the coroner and the local community strongly disagreed. By exploring the history of lynching and its tangible legacy in today’s United States, the film poses timely questions about the lack of reckoning and justice for both the crimes and the forces behind them – forces that are still at work.
