DOCUMENTARY FILMS AND THE POLITICS OF MEMORY

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the feeling that we live in dark times. Serious crises loom over us. Democracy is in decline. Is it really as bad as it seems or do we exaggerate our fear of climate change, political extremism, polarization and conflict? The best thing we can do is to try to separate reality from propaganda. How we understand the present is the basis for how we create the future. At this year’s festival you can choose among 45 documentaries on a huge variety of topics; from films about how to start an organic farm, living with dementia, or growing up in a suburb in Scotland, to films that investigate huge global challenges such as Artificial Intelligence, or how to get justice for war crimes. The festival has an extensive debate program created in collaboration with our many fantastic partners. We welcome you to take part and discuss with human rights activists, artists, filmmakers, pundits and politicians. You can also enjoy theatre plays, concerts, art exhibitions and performances. The documentary film industry worldwide is in the middle of an enormously creative and productive period. We are in a golden age for documentary film. The number of high-quality films from all over the world is staggering and makes our selection process a truly privileged task. Some films are funny, exciting and moving, while others can be terribly hard to watch. Sometimes we ask ourselves why we should watch films about horrific human rights violations and extreme suffering. Does it do any good?

Our answer is that sometimes it is necessary to see the films that are the hardest to watch. Not only because they’re good films, and even great art, but because we need to know what’s real. We all have a responsibility to safeguard reality. It is not enough to know that it is recorded and stored somewhere. We have to carry history with us to avoid being manipulated by propaganda. This is especially important when reality no longer seems to matter to state leaders. Watching a film about something real is an action in itself. It matters that a part of reality is now present in your memory. Welcome to the 12th edition of the Human International Documentary Film Festival. I wish you an insightful, inspiring, joyful and interesting week. Ketil Magnussen Festival Director

PALESTINIAN LIFE UNDER OCCUPATION AND SIEGE

HIGHLIGHTED THEME

FILM ADVOCATE A thrilling court drama on the controversial Israeli advocate Lea Tsemel. The unapologetic 74-year-old has spent her whole life defending Palestinians charged with serious violent crimes, and argues that most of these acts of violence are acts of resistance against the Israeli apartheid regime. The documentary follows a 13-year-old Palestinian boy risking life imprisonment for stabbing Israelis on the streets of Tel Aviv, and a Palestinian young woman charged with an attempted suicide bombing.  SEE PG.32

FILM  OF LAND AND BREAD

FILM  “MY GAZA ONLINE”

Daily, brutal meetings between Palestinians and Israelis in occupied territories. A man stuck in a barbed wire fence has been caught in the act. On his way up a roof to remove a Palestinian flag, he is confronted by the occupant of the house, with a camera. To the sound of cheers from the Israeli settlers in the street below, the uninvited guest insists that the land, and even the house, ultimately belong to him.  SEE PG.34

Over the course of five years, Palestinian film director Mohamed Jabaly has been distant from his family and friends while living in the far north of Norway. Now the internet has become the only way to communicate with them, but it is difficult and challenging due to the situation in Gaza.  SEE PG.87

SEE PG.91

SEE PG.90

ART  KUNSTPLASS FESTIVAL EXHIBITION: INTERNAL SHADOW

DEBATE  HOPE DETAINED

Ali Jabaly has for several years worked on art projects related to the occupation of Gaza. He is particularly concerned about the human challenges and the lack of freedom of movement both in Gaza and with the outside world. The exhibition Internal Shadow is related to the situation of young people, while also reflecting his inner emotions and sense of being under siege both psychologically and physically. Ali is breaking boundaries through his artistic expression and use of colours and images.  SEE PG.99

ART  KUNSTPLASS, ARTIST TALK: DREAMERS AMONG THE RUBBLE

In total they are about 5000 men, women and children; the Palestinian political prisoners behind the bars of Israeli prisons. Their activism stems from a variety of political and personal motivations. Some detained without any articulated reason, others convicted for terrorist acts. They meet very poorly treatment and are exposed to isolation and torture. How do you stay sane and keep a flicker of hope in such a situation? What legal rights do they possess? And what political strategies lay behind Israeli authorities’ active use of prison cells and torture?  SEE PG.81

Ali Jabaly will take you on journey through his artistic practice. This will include the current exhibition at Kunstplass, the open-air exhibition “Dreamers among the rubble” in Gaza and other art projects. SEE PG.79

REFUGEES: SOLIDARITY UNDER PRESSURE HIGHLIGHTED THEME

FILM  MIDNIGHT TRAVELER

Deeply personal insight into life on the run. When filmmaker Hassam Fazili found himself on the Taliban’s kill list in his native Afghanistan in 2015, he, his wife and their little daughters were forced to flee. After asylum refusal in neighboring Tajikistan, the family embarked on the long, dangerous journey to Europe. However, as so many other refugees came to learn, the dangers were not over when they reached Europe’s borders.  SEE PG.33

FILM  THE REST

Artist Ai Weiwei provides moving snapshots of the refugee crisis. From Turkey to France, from discouraged refugees to xenophobic locals and disillusioned volunteers: Ai Weiwei gives us a clear look at the consequences of the refugee crisis, Europe’s inability to act and the refugees’ hopeless situation. SEE PG.46

FILM  HUMANITY ON TRIAL When the refugee crisis hits Europe, a young Danish man, Salam Aldeen travels to Greece to volunteer. Salam, himself a refugee who fled civil war in Moldova with his family in the early nineties, finds his calling rescuing refugees from the Aegean Sea. But one night while trying to find a refugee family lost at sea, Salam is arrested and charged with human smuggling.  SEE PG.26

FILM  ANGELS ON DIAMOND STREET Heartwarming tale about a soup kitchen and solidarity in Philadelphia. What happens when an undocumented Mexican family seeks sanctuary in an African-American church in Philadelphia’s poorest district? The church and soup kitchen have roots back to the Black Panther movement in the 1960s, and describe themselves as an activist congregation. When Carmela Hernandez and her children ask for sanctuary, the pastor risks five years in prison for housing them, but she is never in doubt. She says it best herself: “Carmela’s story is our story”.  SEE PG.39 8

Samme høst fikk Arne Viste ett års betinget fengsel for å ha ansatt asylsøkere uten lovlig opphold for å hjelpe dem,

HIGHLIGHTED THEME

SEE PG.85

INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM

FILM  PRISON FOR PROFIT What happens when a prison in South Africa is to be run privately? In this revealing documentary we get some of the answers. Since 2001, the multinational security company G4S has operated Mangaung prison in Johannesburg, promising humane treatment and development of inmates. But repeated charges of torture and mistreatment of inmates and leaks of surveillance videos prompted investigative journalist Ruth Hopkins to investigate, and her findings, as well as interviews with former staff and inmates, paint an unbridledly brutal and cynical image of a prison run primarily for profit. where both the staff and inmates daily fear for their lives.  SEE PG.35

FILM  RADIO SILENCE A hard-hitting Mexican journalist goes up against the State. Journalist Carmen Aristegui is one of Mexico’s strongest critical voices, and has spent her entire career going after state corruption. In 2015, when she was fired from the radio channel she worked for after political pressure, she instead established her own news site, which goes uncompromisingly on the State’s links to the cartels.  SEE PG.35

FILM COLLECTIVE Breathlessly exciting about the discovery of a Romanian corruption scandal. In the devastating fire at a nightclub in Bucharest, 27 young people perished – but in the weeks that followed, 37 more died in the hospitals, of bacterial infections. What was wrong with Romanian hospitals?  SEE PG.40

LIVE  MASTERCLASS RUTH HOPKINS Ruth Hopkins is an award winning investigative journalist, based in South Africa. She worked as a journalist and editor with the Wits Justice Project in Johannesburg from 2012–2018,

producing content about wrongful convictions, lengthy remand detention, police brutality and various other criminal justice issues. SEE PG.69

9

ON THE EDGE: CLIMATE AND THE ENVIRONMENT HIGHLIGHTED THEME

FILM MÁXIMA A cinematically grandiose drama about one Peruvian woman’s fight against big business. Máxima Acuña has become a worldwide symbol of the tireless battle against large multinational corporations for the rights to her own land. This riveting documentary follows her staunch attempts to defend her rights facing the world’s largest gold mining company, which through an alliance with the police is pushing to expropriate her farm through violence and sabotage.  SEE PG.33

FILM  SEA OF SHADOWS A stirring film on how a Mexican cartel and Chinese demand for swim bladders are eradicating the world’s smallest whales. Off the west coast of Mexico, the cartels hunt for “the cocaine of the sea” – the extremely valuable totoaba fish, sold as a delicacy in China. But in the same totoaba nets, the endangered vaquita whale gets stuck and dies. The attempt to save the vaquita whale leads us deep into a dangerous network of Mexican cartels, Chinese smugglers and corrupt police and politicians.  SEE PG.36

10

FILM NEWTOPIA

FILM  BIGGEST LITTLE FARM

The young and adventurous Norwegian backpacker Audun Amundsen is driven by his search for a utopian world and ends up in the wild jungle of Indonesia. Here he meets the shaman Aman Paksa and his clan who lives a traditional life, surviving without money, electricity or modern tools.  SEE PG.28

John and Molly Chester moved from the big city to run an organic farm, with no experience whatsoever. It becomes a steep and chaotic learning curve to create a farm in balance with nature, with predators and insects, which can meet both flood and drought.

DEBATT  KLIMAPOLITIKKEN FEILER

DEBATT  I VEIEN FOR INDUSTRIEN

SEE PG.88

SEE PG.40

SEE PG.88

SEE PG.89

11

MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA HIGHLIGHTED THEME

FILM  RADIO SILENCE

A hard-hitting Mexican journalist goes up against the State. SEE PG.35 12

FILM   DARK SUNS

Tales from Mexico’s hideous wave of violence, told from those living within. Shot in stark monochrome, Dark Suns chronicles the hundreds of murders of women, journalists, students, and activists in Mexico since the 1990s, and the insidious culture of cartel violence and state corruption behind them.  SEE PG.41

FILM  SEA OF SHADOWS

FILM  MIDNIGHT FAMILY

A stirring film on how a Mexican cartel and Chinese demand for swim bladders are eradicating the world’s smallest whales. SEE PG.36

Oscar shortlisted about a family-run ambulance in Mexico City. Mexico City has 9 million inhabitants, but only 45 official ambulances. The rest is covered by private ambulances, such as the Ochoa family ambulance, where the action-loving 17-year-old Juan is the driver. Every night, the family awaits accidents that could mean money for their next meal, but then they have to arrive at the scene of the accident first, avoiding corrupt police controls along the way.  SEE PG.43

FILM  BEHIND THE BLOOD Honduras’ bloody gang wars and those forced to live with it. Honduras is one of the most dangerous countries in the world, but what is life like behind all the bloody headlines? This thought-provoking documentary takes us to the different sides of the conflict: the gang members who commit the heinous violence, the priest who tries to rescue gang members and the journalist who reports on it all.  SEE PG.32

DEBATE  URBAN VIOLENCE IN CENTRAL AMERICA In several cities in Central America, the humanitarian situation is similar to what we see in wars. Murders, extortion, kidnappings, rape, forced recruitment to criminal gangs, terrorization of communities, huge economic costs, drug trafficking and impunity have led to a humanitatian crisis in many areas in Central America. It affects access to basic health services, minor infections become life threatening and infant mortality increases. This violence is a major cause of the refugee flow towards Mexico and the USA. Why is violence in urban areas in Central America so widespread, and why is it difficult to provide humanitarian help?  SEE PG.72 13

HIGHLIGHTED THEME

SEE PG.63

DEBATE  THE HATE AGAINST ART: WAYS OF SEEING REVISITED Last year the festival showed Ways of Seeing, a groundbreaking theatre play that addresses important issues related to power and racism. The consequences have been severe for theatre director Pia Maria Roll and the theatre group. In Israel, actor and theater director Einat Weizman has been called a ‘killer of babies,’ because she addresses human rights violations committed against Palestinians. Both Einat and Pia has been heavily criticized and pressured by their own governments, simply for putting up theatre plays that questions the status quo. Pia Maria Roll and the theatre group were attacked not just by cyber bullies but by several politicians in power, including the prime minister. The Culture Minister of Israel has publicly stated that theatres will be blacklisted from public support if they put up Einat Weizman’s plays. They have both experienced threats and harassment as a result of this pressure.  SEE PG.86

DEBATT  FILMSKAPERE VURDERER YTRINGSFRIHETEN I 2020

SEE PG.84

OPENING NIGHT MÁXIMA, KAMPEN JANITSJAR AND OPENING SPEECH: BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS – A WORK IN PROGRESS?

Welcome to our grand opening night at Vega Scene! HUMAN International Documentary Film Festival 2020 will open with the magnificent documentary Máxima, about the fight against corporate environmental destruction and human rights violations in Peru. Before the screening, we will treat our audience to a little sparkling for all, the music of Kampen Janitsjar, who figures in the documentary Marching Forever and a keynote speech by Katie Redford. The film will be introduced by director Claudia Sparrow. Millions of people around the world are facing violence, harassment and an end to their traditional ways of life because they are living in areas with valuable natural resources. In a battle between huge profits and human rights, people’s rights often lose. People who oppose mining, agribusiness and fossil fuel projects are increasingly being killed, threatened, and criminalized. However; the law can be used as a tool of progress, protecting environmental defenders from attacks and threats against their lives and livelihoods. The film Maxima illustrates this struggle. For over a decade, Maxima Acuña, and her family have resisted attempts from the Newmont Mining Corporation to 20

take away their lands to build a huge and controversial gold mine.Earth Rights has supported Maxima and her family in their fight. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights calls on “every individual and every organ of society” to promote and respect human rights. For decades, a movement has been building to find better ways to protect people and communities from corporate human rights abuse. The UN and the OECD have issued guidelines for corporations. New laws are introduced in many countries. Are we, as a global society, moving forward on this issue?

DESCENT INTO THE MAELSTROM NORGE, 2020

FALSE BELIEF NORGE, 2019

Regi Jan Vardøen Produsent Beacon Isle Productions, Weggefilms Språk Engelsk Lengde 69 min

Regi Lene Berg Produsent FABB001 Språk Engelsk Lengde 103 min

Men for hva?

Lofoten, the range of mountainous islands strewn over the Arctic waters of northern Norway, is the setting for Edgar Allan Poe’vs 1841 short story “Descent into the Maelstrom”. Two brothers, fishermen, are caught in the raging waters of the “Moskenesstraumen” and their boat is dragged down into the swirling maelstrom. In 1980, Philip Glass wrote a composition based on Poe’s short story. We follow musicians from the Arctic Philharmonic to the top of Mount Ryten, where they perform this piece overlooking the natural phenomenon that originally inspired Poe. The documentary is a tribute to the Norwegian coastal culture and the people who still risk their life and health to maintain old traditions. This is a film with magnificent music and powerful nature that sets the big emotions in motion. FRI 28.02 20:00 VEGA SCENE – SAL 1 Q&A etter filmen SAT 29.02 14:00

A Norwegian artist reconstructs her kafkaesque journey through the US justice system, as her partner is arrested, convicted, and imprisoned without cause in New York. In 2008 Norwegian artist Lene Berg moved to Harlem, New York, with her partner, a black man, a publisher who will be referred to as D. After giving the police a statement about being harassed by a neighbor, D was arrested. But what exactly is he being accused of? This led to a series of catastrophic events where D’s implicit trust in the U.S. justice system put everything he cherished at risk. By analyzing what at first seems to be a minor case, False Belief uncovers the larger picture of a society that employs incarceration as a political and economic weapon.

Norway’s last surviving male orchestra, the 90 year old Kampen Janitsjarorkester, has an average age of 60. They desperately need to recruit new members to avoid dying out. But there is a shortage of young male musicians. Should the orchestra open its doors and let women join the orchestra? This challenges old traditions. Many are afraid that in the process of saving their beloved orchestra, they will simultaneously destroy this masculine sanctuary. MARCHING FOREVER is a tender, humorous and honest portrait of a male bastion. It is a film about strong friendships, gender roles and the scariest thing of all: change!

THU 27.02 20:30 VEGA SCENE – SAL 3

When two paintings are stolen from Oslo-based artist Barbora Kysilkova, the police catch the thieves within a few days. But the paintings are never found. Barbora attends the court case hoping to find clues for where they can be but finds herself compelled to walk over to one of the criminals to ask another question: “I wonder if I could paint you?” The thief answers without hesitation: “That would be possible.” Thus begins the relationship between an artist and her unlikely muse–which soon evolves into an even more unlikely friendship. Filmed over three years, the documentary follows a remarkable story of human connection that takes turns that one could never have imagined.

SORRY BRØDRE, DET BLE MEG NORGE, 2020

Regi Audun Amundsen Produsent UpNorth Film Språk Engelsk Lengde 88 min

Regi Elsa Kvamme Produsent Alert film Språk Norsk Lengde 60 min

The young and adventurous Norwegian backpacker Audun Amundsen is driven by his search for a utopian world and ends up in the wild jungle of Indonesia. Here he meets the shaman Aman Paksa and his clan who lives a traditional life, surviving without money, electricity or modern tools. Amundsen is spellbound by their lifestyle and decides to document their harmonic way of life. However, the romantic harmony starts to crumble as modern temptations from the surrounding world lurk behind every corner. Amundsen follows Aman Paksa for nearly 15 years on his turbulent path towards modernity.

Jan Erik Vold is one of the most original and famous poets of Norway. He has recorded albums with Chet Baker and Jan Garbarek, and for him thoughts and action are never far from each other. The slogan “It is hopeless and we never give up” became a slogan for many generations of protesters, and “Cultureweek” made the whole country laugh. He often uses his poetry politically, to focus on unjustice and abuse of power, like when the Norwegian government wanted to return 6-year-old Nathan Eshethe to a country where he had never been. Soon pushing 80, he is still going strong. But who is the man behind the poets mask, what are the origins of his strong engagement, and why is it so important for him not to forget the poets of the past?

Open Arms is a loving portrayal of dance artist Martin Slaatto and his elderly mother, Margit. The film follows the development of his singular fusion of dance, art and exercise of both body and mind – the Transportation Dance. This requires moving in unexpected ways, like “fly-flapping”, “melting”, and skipping. Martin is energetic and enthusiastic; unwavering in his belief in the potential of his innovation. Margit is an artist in her own right – a poetic writer of precise and heartbreaking reflections on the experience of growing old.

Jan, Mimi and Sigvald have different forms of dementia. In STAY, we see their lives characterised by searching for words, memories and objects. Daily life is demanding, both for them and those closest to them, but caregiving, togetherness and music can help. They never lose themselves completely, even though a lot of who they once were is being slowly eroded by the disease. STAY is a warm and intimate film about the daily lives of three people, the fear of losing control and the importance of relationships. The director works at close range, and the result is a beautiful and authentic portrayal with a focus on human dignity and love. It’s about being present, being there – both as family and friends, and as a society.

A thrilling court drama on the controversial Israeli advocate Lea Tsemel. The unapologetic 74-year-old has spent her whole life defending Palestinians charged with serious violent crimes, and argues that most of these acts of violence are acts of resistance against the Israeli apartheid regime. Tsemel’s attempts to humanise her clients provokes strong reactions, and it is few and far between the victories in a legal system rigged to gross inequality between Israeli and Palestine accused. Honduras’ bloody gang wars and those forced to live with it. Honduras is one of the most dangerous countries in the world, but what is life like behind all the bloody headlines? This thought-provoking documentary takes us to the different sides of the conflict: the gang members who commit the heinous violence, the priest who tries to rescue gang members and the journalist who reports on it all. All three are searching for hope that things can get better, but it is hard to find when the government’s campaigns only exacerbate the situation, and the boundary between good and evil, right and wrong is becoming increasingly blurred.

The film is made exclusively by mobile phone, and provides a rare close-up portrait of a family and a marriage carving out a way of life, year after year, from refugee camp to refugee camp. A thought-provoking story from the refugee crisis, a crisis first and foremost for the refugees themselves, in the face of an ice-cold system. WED 26.02 17:00

A man stuck in a barbed wire fence has been caught in the act. On his way up a roof to remove a Palestinian flag, he is confronted by the occupant of the house, with a camera. The uninvited guest insists that the land, and even the house, ultimately belong to him. Of land and bread is composed of such moments: daily, often brutal meetings between the occupied and the occupied. Through Palestinian eyes, we witness house demolitions, random arrests and nightly house raids, in all their daily brutal reality. The seriousness of the occupation becomes visible in a mosaic of stories, captured on camera by Palestinians in the West Bank and collected by the Israeli peace organization B’Tselem.

An intense insight into what’s happening at street level in the Phillipines during Dutertes hyper-violent war on drugs. Where do you find justice when your president compares himself to Hitler? This breathlessly exciting film dives deep into Manila’s most crime- ridden parts, to give us a multi-layered tale of the deployment of a new chief of police, ordered to curb the rampant killings performed by the local police force. The casualties decrease, the police death squads disappear and justice prevails – at least on the surface. We stay close to the new chief of police, as well as the inhabitans terrorized by the police, and the result is an unflinching look at the consequences of Duterte’s dangerous rhetorics.

What happens when a prison in South Africa is to be run privately? In this revealing documentary we get some of the answers. Since 2001, the multinational security company G4S has operated Mangaung prison in Johannesburg, promising humane treatment and development of inmates. But repeated charges of torture and mistreatment of inmates and leaks of surveillance videos prompted investigative journalist Ruth Hopkins to investigate, and her findings, as well as interviews with former staff and inmates, paint an unbridledly brutal and cynical image of a prison run primarily for profit. where both the staff and inmates daily fear for their lives.

A hard-hitting Mexican journalist goes up against the State. This leads to serious threats and actions against the news site and its staff, and in a country where journalists are assassinated for their work on a regular basis, Carmen is unwavering in her belief that it makes a difference: “Optimism is a moral obligation. The alternative is to give up”. A captivating and exciting portrait of the best and worst sides of Mexico.

A stirring film on how a Mexican cartel and Chinese demand for swim bladders are eradicating the world’s smallest whales. It will be a battle of life and death, both for the whale and its fighters. The film shows how organized crime and the ramifications of corruption into all walks of life are a deadly enemy not only to locals and journalists, but also to environmentalists and the most vulnerable creatures of the ocean.

How the pharmaceutical industry’s hunt for profit potentially puts millions of African lives at risk. Malaria kills 500,000 people every year. Artemisia is a medicinal plant that has been in use for over 2000 years, and the active ingredient artemisinin is the main ingredient in today’s malaria medicines produced in the West, and sold expensively to African countries. But the plant can easily be grown locally, and research shows that the plant acts as both effective treatment and prevention. The documentary reveals in a provocative way how profitable malaria prevention has become, and how both the authorities and the WHO are being pressured by the pharmaceutical industry to block proven effective natural medicine out of the market.

Director Seamus Murphy Producer Pulse Films, Blinder Films, JW Films Language English Duration 90 min

Lynsjingens stygge arv i USA.

Poetic and intimate about icon PJ Harvey’s creative process. Since the breakthrough in the 1990s, Polly Jean Harvey has been an alternative force in the rock landscape, and has continuously throughout her career made unexpected creative choices. This documentary pulls aside the curtain, and shows how Harvey creates the anti-war album “The Hope Six Demolition Project.” The director, film photographer and film journalist Seamus Murphy, works closely with Harvey, and she joins him in his travels as a photo journalist to Afghanistan, Syria, Bosnia and Washington. These travels give birth to the raw poetry which slowly becomes the finished album. The film speaks to the nature of art and creativity, regardless of whether you have a relationship to PJ Harvey or not.

The ugly legacy of lynching in the United States. Hideous lynchings of African Americans were not uncommon in the US up until the 1970s. But did it truly end? This thought-provoking documentary digs deep into the case of an African-American 17-yearold who was found hanging from a playground in North Carolina in 2014, which police quickly dismissed as suicide. However, both the family, the coroner and the local community strongly disagreed. By exploring the history of lynching and its tangible legacy in today’s United States, the film poses timely questions about the lack of reckoning and justice for both the crimes and the forces behind them – forces that are still at work.

Heartwarming tale about a soup kitchen and solidarity in Philadelphia. This charming documentary shows how the struggle for civil rights is in essence the same, no matter who is fighting it, and shows how solidarity becomes the essential link between the congregation, the soup kitchen’s clientele and the undocumented.

“Everyone told us this idea was crazy” John and Molly Chester moved from the big city to run an organic farm, with no experience whatsoever. It becomes a steep and chaotic learning curve to create a farm in balance with nature, with predators and insects, which can meet both flood and drought. We follow them on their journey through 8 years, where they try to understand more and more of the complex and wonderful interactions of the farm and nature. An exciting, fun, educational and moving film about how to save a small part of the world. The documentary was shortlisted for Oscar for Best Documentary 2020.

Breathlessly exciting about the discovery of a Romanian corruption scandal. In the devastating fire at a nightclub in Bucharest, 27 young people perished – but in the weeks that followed, 37 more died in the hospitals, of bacterial infections. What was wrong with Romanian hospitals? When a newspaper starts investigating the case, it uncovers a corruption scandal so enormous that not even the investigative journalists themselves can believe the extent. This documentary thriller takes us into the journalistic and political work done by individuals who risk everything to uncover the truth about the most tragic consequences of corruption.

Director Julien Elie draws on the testimony of determined investigators, family members, journalists, priests, lawyers, and activists, tracing a path of organized and unpunished criminality that involves drug and human trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, and collusion with the governments on both sides of the border.

Hypnotiserende innblikk i Pave Frans’ besøk i Chile i 2018. Hypnotizing insight into Pope Francis’ visit to Chile in 2018. Chile is a deeply Catholic country, but when Pope Francis visited Chile in 2018, it was not without controversy: people were protesting in the streets: LGBTQ rights defenders, the poor, the indigenous Mapuche people, and pro-abortion activists. The contrasts of the preparations and reactions to the Pope’s visit are beautifully illustrated in this mosaic documentary, created by a film collective of 17 directors from the MAFI group. Through a series of uncommented tableaus, we gradually gain a wide-reaching and sometimes humorous picture of Chile’s challenges and contradictions, and the role of religion in a changing country.

How do you justify giving birth to a child in a war zone? The most gripping film of the year is the Syrian journalist Waad’s harrowing story of her life in Aleppo, told to her daughter. Through Waad’s lens we get an extremely close and personal look at the fate of Syria, from Waad’s participation in the infancy of the optimistic student demonstrations, all the way to the horrific warfare of the Syrian regime and siege of Aleppo. At the same time, this is the story of life in spite of the war – Waad gets married, becomes pregnant and gives birth, while the world around her is literally collapsing. She and her husband run the very last hospital in Aleppo, and they refuse to leave all they have been fighting for. But what about their daughter? For Sama has won numerous awards globally, and this testimony is just as painful as it is beautiful.

Hva er propaganda? Er all kunst propaganda? What is propaganda? Is all art propaganda? How do we distinguish between what is propaganda and not? And is all propaganda something negative? These are some of the questions director Larry Weinstein asks in this documentary. Drawing historical lines from Alexander the Great, Adolf Hitler, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and up to today's social media landscape, the film looks at the use of propaganda and methods to communicate messages through art and visual expression.

Will antibiotic resistance be our apocalypse? In 2015, the nightmare became a reality: The first bacteria resistant to all known antibiotics was discovered. This science thriller presents the shocking story of ignorance and greed that has brought us to the very edge, and it paints a dramatic picture of our near future: By 2050 we will no longer have antibiotics that work. We are losing the race, and this documentary puts us face-to-face with the researchers, diplomats and doctors who are the frontlines of the battle against this scenario. New antibiotics must be developed, and the excessive use, especially for animals, must end. But are the billion-dollar industries and politicians willing to do what is neccessary to avoid yet another disaster created by humans?

A stunning coming-of-age drama from a former Scottish industrial town. Gemma is growing up in Scotland’s former steel capital, which now has lost its prospects for the future after the industry disappeared. This hopelessness trickles into the youth, who pass their time with alcohol, drugs and meaningless violence. But childhood is about to end, and when Gemma becomes pregnant she has to make some choices for the future that forces her to grow up. The film plays out as a drama, and becomes an intimate and beautiful portrait of a girl rising, despite her surroundings. At the same time, it is also a haunting portrayal of the consequences for life in industrial cities which have lost their livelihood.

Truth is not». Denne avslørende dokumentaren viser Imeldas usannsynlige vei tilbake til makten, hvor Marcos-dynastiets allianse med president Duterte la grunnlaget for dagens brutale regime. How Imelda Marcos still runs the Philippines from behind the scenes. Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos became notorious for her extravagant spending and her 3,000 pairs of shoes, revealed in 1986 when President Ferdinand Marco’s brutal regime fell, the people stormed the presidential palace. But behind the stencil of a witless first lady with expensive shopping habits, there lurks something much darker: a ruthless desire for power. We clearly see how Imelda has always pulled the strings and gotten away with it, as she herself says: “Perception is real. Truth is not”. This revealing documentary shows Imelda’s unlikely path back to power, where the Marcos dynasty’s alliance with President Duterte has laid the foundation for today’s brutal regime. TUE 25.02 21:00

The Rest insists on not forgetting, not losing the empathy of all those living in uncertainty and inhumane conditions in today’s Europe, and through scenes from various refugees in different countries it shows us brief, upsetting glimpses into lives which are seemingly impossible to escape from.

VARDA BY AGNÈS

ZERO IMPUNITY

FRANCE, 2019

´ The last film from the queen of French New Wave cinema was about herself. Agnès Varda was “the grandmother of French New Wave cinema” and has had her own distinctive style since the 1950s, a style she also incorporates into her very last work, which came out a few days before she died in March 2019. In Varda by Agnès she explores her own work with a good dose of humour, curiosity and melancholy. The documentary is a heart-warming and wise insight into one of the 20th century’s most important artist minds, and follows Varda’s own mantra: Nothing is banal if you have empathy and love for those you film.

A scream for justice for victims of sexual violence in armed conflict. An artistic hybrid documentary, Zero Impunity is the centerpiece of an ambitious global transmedia project. The documentary sheds a powerful spotlight on the seemingly total impunity for the use of sexual violence in armed conflicts worldwide. By offering a voice to victims across the globe, including Syria and Ukraine, on the African Continent and in the US, the documentary is an important documentation and a necessary eye-opening call to action, raising awareness and outrage.

UNLOCKING THE CAGE USA, 2019

Chris Hegedus & D. A. Pennebaker Pennebaker Hegedus Films English 91 min

Animal rights lawyer Steven Wise in his unprecedented challenge to break down the legal wall that separates animals from humans. After 30 years of struggling with ineffective animal welfare laws, Steve and his legal team makes history by filing the first lawsuits that seek to transform a chimpanzee from a “thing” with no rights to a “person” with legal protections. Supported by affidavits from primatologists around the world, Steve maintains that, based on scientific evidence, cognitively complex animals such as chimpanzees, whales, dolphins, and elephants have the capacity for limited personhood rights that would protect them from physical abuse. It is an intimate look at a lawsuit that could forever transform our legal system, and one man’s lifelong quest to protect “nonhuman” animals.

FILMMAKERS/CHANGEMAKERS: RELEVANS, FINANSIERING OG FRIHET

SEMINAR

FILM + SAMTALE

PANEL Audun Aagre, daglig leder i Den norske Burmakomité Ingeborg Moa, prosjektleder Amnesty International Norge Khairul Amin, leder for Rohingya Community Norway

Aung San Suu Kyi fikk Nobels fredspris i 1991.

700 000 rohingya tvunget i eksil.

MODERATOR Line Khateeb, SPACE

Why should we watch films about war and human suffering? The Syrian war is not only fought with guns and bombs, but also with words. The Syrian government is funding efforts to create their version of the war while others are documenting regime war crimes. Such “narrative wars” are not unique to Syria. They are a normal occurrence. The Holocaust, the Nakba and the Syrian war all have one thing in common: Documenting and remembering these injustices are crucial to create justice for victims. “For Sama” is a difficult, yet important, film to watch; it reminds us to ask questions like: Why is it important to bear witness to the horrors of violent conflicts?

Following the increasingly authoritarian turn of India during the past five years under the Hindu nationalist government of Narendra Modi; Indian universities have once again re-emerged as centres of political engagement, civil rights activism and public dissent. In this panel discussion, we examine the historical roots of student activism in India and ask what role universities and students play at the current conjuncture, when civil liberties and the secular identity of India appears to be under increasing pressure.

The year 2017 became a dark chapter in the history of LGBT persons around the world, with violent crackdowns in Azerbaijan, Chechnya, Indonesia, Egypt and many other places. Azerbaijani authorities were orchestrating arrests, torturing detainees and fabricating trials against the LGBT community. With international attention quickly fading, the Azerbaijani crisis has become largely invisible, despite the LGBT community living under constant pressure. This debate is a rare opportunity to learn about the situation for LGBT persons in Azerbaijan, and to meet those who are fighting for their stories to be heard. The panel will discuss the events from 2017, what has happened since and how it is to be LGBT in what is considered to be among the worst countries for LGBT in Europe.

In the wake of a vicious anti-LGBT government crackdown in Azerbaijan in September 2017, this documentary film follows the plight of three young LGBT Azeris fearing for their lives. On a journey from Istanbul to Baku, the filmmakers combine animation and video footage to reveal stories of extortion, torture and murder, and discover that for those who have managed to escape, persecution has followed them. It’s a universal story of identity, survival and enduring love in a place that seeks to destroy it.

«SVENSKE TILSTANDER» – ORIENTALISME I PRAKSIS FILM + SAMTALE

Since the US invasion in 2001, things have gone from bad to worse in Afghanistan. One in five killed is civilian, and the Taliban is controlling more and more parts of the country. In several cities in Central America, the humanitarian situation is similar to what we see in wars.

Norges mest kjente sjimpanse, Julius, elsket å bli kilt under armene. I 1993 startet den omstridte filosofen Peter Singer «The great ape project» sammen med Paola Cavalieri.

War crimes that go unpunished, leaves a crippled society. Countless human rights violations, and crimes have been committed in Syria since the beginning of the uprising in the spring of 2011. Those responsible remain largely unpunished. In November 2019, a group of Syrian plaintiffs filed criminal complaints with Norwegian police and asked for investigations of named heads of Syrian intelligence services and other institutions responsible for torture and other grave abuses. On this background, we ask politicians, legal experts, activists, and victims who have found protection in Norway, how Norwegian authorities and authorities in other democratic countries can contribute to fighting impunity in Syria.

DREAMERS AMONG THE RUBBLE ARTIST TALK

FREE ENTRANCE PANEL Ali Jabaly, artist Vibeke Harper, MOTforestillinger

Ali Jabaly will take you on journey through his artistic practice. This will include his the current exhibition at Kunstplass, the open-air exhibition “Dreamers Among the Rubble” in Gaza and other art projects. For the film festival in Oslo Ali has painted a new large mural on the wall inspired by an exhibition he recently created in Gaza entitled “Dreamers among the rubble”.

This exhibition took place inside a building in Gaza that was destroyed by bombs in 2014. How do you find the soul in the destruction? Ali asked himself as he started the project. At Kunstplass in the middle of Oslo, he deconstructs the white walls and make the viewer experience art in a new manner. Al-Jabali was born and raised in Gaza. He became interested in art already as a kid, and gradually developed his artistic skills in graffiti. He studied interior design, and he is a professional painter specialized in portraits, fine art, illustration, and digital art painting. In the fall of 2019, he started a BA at Nordland Film- og kunstfagskole in Lofoten. He has participated in several art exhibitions nationally and internationally, including at Small Project in Tromsø in June 2019.

KINA + AKADEMISK FRIHET = SANT? FILM + SAMTALE

FRI INNGANG PANEL Jostein Hole Kobbeltvedt, daglig leder i Raftostiftelsen Panelet oppdateres på humanfilm.no

MASTERCLASS  TONJE HESSEN SCHEI FREE ENTRANCE FILMOGRAFI iHuman, 2019 Drone, 2014 Play Again, 2010 Independent Intervention, 2006

Drone mottok prisen for The Most Valuable Film ved Cinema for Peace i Berlin i 2016, Amandapris for beste dokumentar i 2015 og Gullruten for beste dokumentar i 2016.

FILMSKAPERE VURDERER YTRINGSFRIHET I 2020 DEBATT

Med bl.a.

Samme høst fikk Arne Viste ett års betinget fengsel for å ha ansatt asylsøkere uten lovlig opphold for å hjelpe dem.

Last year the festival showed Ways of Seeing, a groundbreaking theatre play that addresses important issues related to power and racism. The organization Freemuse writes in 2020 that emerging trends in Europe represent a real danger to artistic freedom. Rising populism is taking a stronger hold and a rhetoric which often enforces traditionalist values is providing a groundswell in which limits on freedom of artistic expression are legitimised. Is hatred against art growing? Reactionary forces have always criticized alternative art expressions, but is it getting worse? How do Einat Weizman and Pia Maria Roll experience this reactionary turn? Why is art considered so threatening? And how do we counter this limitation of freedom of speech?

91 HUMAN LIVE

BORDER THREADS ART EXHIBITION

REMAPPING: PATTERNS OF MOVEMENT TO CONNECT PERFORMANCE

BORDER THREADS Camilla Dahl

PERFORMANCE Marielle Kalldal Marthe Dahl

Border Threads is a collaborative art project about Borders, initiated by Camilla Dahl. The aim is to establish a platform where the participants can talk about their border experiences. Through a cross- border collaboration, we have made more than 300 textile pieces that are mounted together to a cover. Goods, money and information have freedom of movement. At the same time we see increasing restrictions on the movement of people, especially migrants and refugees. Many of the participants of this project live as refugees in other countries. The participants come from Norway, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria and Greece. By transforming the complexity of a transnational collaboration into something tactile and simple as a cover, we hope to contribute to a reflection on the connections between individual experiences with borders, dialogue, collaboration and international politics. The Border Threads cover will be exhibited in the foyer at Vega Scene during the festival week.Official opening with arttalk will be announced in the online festival program. (with Marielle Kalldal, Anja Naper, Daniel Jamal Elhomsi and Camilla Dahl).

What can a space offer a body? And what can a body offer a space? ReMapping: Patterns of Movement to Connect (PMTC) is an art project and part of an ongoing research working with investi gating body-in-contact as a phenomenon through physical mapping in urban environments. The mapping manifests itself through exploration of different layers in kinesthetics using scores as a mapping technique, focusing on choreography, haptic communication and movement as core elements. The aim of the project is thus to investigate how the body operates with our daily surroundings by (re) activating alternative interaction patterns. During the festival week the project will work with playful interventions in the foyer of the Vega Scene as part of a site-specific performance series. The performers will map the site and the people who inhabit it creating improvised choreographies as well as exploring the possibilities of what body-in-contact is or can be by challenging the everyday perception of the relationship between body and space.

“Through art, I try to express the steadfastness of the Palestinian people.” –Ali Jabaly

Kunstplass has the pleasure of presenting this year’s festival artist Ali Jabaly with the exhibition INTERNAL SHADOW. Ali Jabaly is a 27–years old Palestinian artist from Gaza, who currently resides in Northern Norway. FREE ENTRANCE

He decided to transform the bombed-out shell and crumbling facade of the famous Italian complex in the Nasr area of central Gaza into a fantastic open-air exhibition.

He created large portraits of people longing for a better life, and through art he managed to bring life back to the building. He has participated in several art exhibitions nationally and internationally, including at Small Project in Tromsø in June 2019. www.instagram.com/alijabaly/

SKOLEFORESTILLINGER

Hva er propaganda? Er all kunst propaganda?
