Hello Welcome to Saltaire Arts Trail, welcome to Saltaire and welcome to Bradford. I’m delighted to bring you a new programme for 2012 that offers many firsts including newly commissioned contemporary art and many new exhibitions and new artists. These will sit alongside some of our regular and much loved favourite attractions like the Makers’ Fair and Open Houses. For the first time we have received support from the National Lottery through the Arts Council England. We are proud to have such a badge of honour that has enabled us to invest significantly in the creation of new art, new exhibitions and Wondermental film programmes.
Many of Titus Salt’s workers’ cottages and numerous other properties around the village will once again be opening their doors and inviting you to see and buy some of the best art and craft the region has to offer. We introduce a new Schools Art Trail this year and as usual offer tonnes of free art and craft activities for families. We extend a very warm welcome to the 90 plus artists that have never exhibited with us before and say hello to familiar faces returning for another fun event. I would like to thank everyone who has worked with us to create a fantastic programme this year. The overwhelming generosity of the people, business owners, agencies and organisations that have supported the development of Saltaire Arts Trail is phenomenal. Thank you all so much. Please enjoy all the village has to offer and have a great time, Amanda Chinneck, Creative Director 2012

Saltaire Visitor Information Centre Salts Mill Once the heart of village life, Salts Mill continues to warm the hearts of locals and visitors alike. It was built by Titus Salt and opened on his 50th birthday in 1853. In 1987, locally born Jonathan Silver restored the mill into a vibrant space for art and commerce. The wonderful new Saltaire Visitor Information Centre, once Titus Salt’s Board Room, is hosting a selection of work by artists from the village. Feast your eyes on what Saltaire has to offer! Image: Salts Press
8 William Henry Street Once again a selection of cottages in Saltaire will open their doors to the public, each offering an up-close peek into some of the original Victorian homes, showcasing a variety of intriguing objects, demonstrations and works of art. This year sees an expansion of the trail by introducing more venues to explore, including the Saltaire Visitor Information Centre located in Salts Mill and The Czajka Care Group Training Centre. We have over 60 artists displaying their work across the Open Houses, from Yorkshire and beyond. Some will be familiar faces and many will be new.
8 William Henry Street is one of the ‘overlooker’ styled cottages built during the first of 16 phases in the construction of Saltaire. However, Saltaire historians have discovered that household income counted for more than job titles in the occupancy of these homes. In this house: Julia Breit’s photographs of dreamlike installations; Frances Brock’s colourful paintings in mixed media; Anne Haworth’s hand built ceramics based on natural forms; June Russell’s drypoint etchings and aquatints inspired by landscapes; Dionne Swift’s abstract textile wall pieces.
Many of these artists will be present during the weekend and will be thrilled to talk to you about their work, so please feel free to approach them. Also, look out for artists offering a wide range of demonstrations.

11 William Henry Street EXHIBITION: NUMBER 11 Nosey parker? Curtain twitcher? Wannabe fly on the wall? If you’re interested in what happens behind closed doors then pay a visit to Number 11, a private viewing of a house. Cross the threshold and step inside, where performers exhibit the everyday, curate the commonplace and frame the frivolous to celebrate the theatre of the ordinary; be it cleaning the oven, folding washing or a well-earned brew. This is the first time we’ve included live art in SAT and we’re excited to see what you make of it. Featuring: Rio Ellis, Emma Gee, Ben Rothera

3 Caroline Street This street was named after Caroline Whitlam Salt, the wife of Titus. Originally, 3 Caroline St was modelled as one of the village boarding houses. When first constructed (1853-54), 3 and 4 Caroline St would have been a single dwelling, but at some point during its history was separated into two properties. This house is another new edition to the arts trail and is packed with a fantastic array of new artists, including Craig Ainge demonstrating the art of signwriting using traditional paints and time honoured skills. 44 Whitlam Street WE HAPPY FEW: SALTAIRE’S OTHER PATHS
Image: Crespi d’adda, Yvonne Carmichael and Andy Abbott
Artists and Saltaire residents Yvonne Carmichael and Andy Abbott present a series of works including photography, sound installations, and a guided walk. These projects are linked by research into the alternative paths that workers’ villages have taken and the less-celebrated remnants of the industrial era, focusing on the Italian workers’ village Crespi D’Adda and in Saltaire, nearby Milner Field. This is the third alternative mapping project undertaken by Andy and Yvonne and all three – including Saltaire Cat Map and Saltaire and Pepper – will be available in publication form from the exhibition. The exhibition will take place at 44 Whitlam St, various locations around Saltaire village and Milner Field.
10 Edward Street At the north end of the village, Edward Street is a wonderful example of the smaller workmen’s cottages. The street was named after Edward Salt, the third son of Saltaire’s founder Titus Salt, who is also known for having the longest association with the Salts Mill (about 40 years). This beautifully renovated house features wonderful examples of hand-embroidered felt textiles by Handmade with Love in Saltaire; Catherine Boyne-Whitelegg’s raku and smoke-fired handbuilt animals; silkscreen prints of the Yorkshire Dales by Joy Godfrey. Image: Catherine Boyne-Whitelegg
75 Albert Road Exhibiting paintings by local artist David Starley, number 75 also hosts Daniel Shiel, returning to fascinate us with his unusual photographs of everyday objects, and Sarah McDade with her hand-built ceramic sculptures. With a recycling theme throughout their work, our new artists include: Ian Swales whose sculptures embrace found natural materials; Aran Illingworth’s modern works using traditional embroidery techniques and recycled textiles and threads; Desmond Pattison’s painted scenes on the glass of reclaimed windows.

13 Fanny Street This street is named after Fanny Salt, Titus Salt’s second of five daughters. The houses on Fanny Street were some of the first houses to be built in Saltaire around 1853-54. Today, it is where we find popular Saltaire-based artist, Clare Caulfield. Clare’s work captures the excitement, life and vibrancy of many of the world’s most exciting cities including Paris, New York and Venice.

2 Constance Street Constance Street is the only one of Saltaire’s streets to be named after a granddaughter of Titus Salt. The 32 houses that make up the street were completed in 1861 and were designed as improved workmen’s cottages. 2 Constance Street represents one of the Italian Villa models within the village architecture. Presented in this house are Kevin Emmott’s genuine pieces of American folk art instruments, but made in Yorkshire; Sarah Jane Mason’s playful objects and bold paintings; and Becca McGrath’s obsession with doodles. 19 Ada Street This small but perfectly formed house nestles neatly in a street named after the youngest of Titus and Caroline Salt’s eleven children. The house was built during the second phase of the village’s construction, between 1856-58. On display will be Janis Goodman’s atmospheric etchings, reflecting her love of the inner city; Jade Marczynski’s hand embroidered, vintage inspired textile artworks; as well as the screen prints that are focused on the history and stories of Saltaire by Salts Press. Drawing on the textile heritage of Saltaire, this specially commissioned exhibition explores the connections between photography, cloth, and memory. With a focus on women’s histories and experiences, the selected works suggest that both cloth and photographs are forever embedded with the physical traces of their subject and the past. Displayed in a first-floor apartment in the former Salt’s Hospital, the show includes work by Ruth Beazley, Kathryn Bethel, Liza Dracup, Jessa Fairbrother, and Kelly Gardner, and is curated by homeowner Pippa Oldfield.
71 George Street George Salt, Titus’s son, was a recognised authority on time pieces. The beautiful clock in Victoria Hall is one of the longlasting gifts he bestowed upon Saltaire. Inside, discover David Ashby’s contemporary hand-thrown, functional ceramics; Hannah Nunn’s papercut lamps; Paul Smith’s dream-like figurative sculptures; Cath Brooke’s industrial and urban landscape prints; Janet Browne’s fabric maps, towns, landscapes and birds; Helen Hallows’ pieces in collage and stitch; Catryn Henderson’s impressionistic landscapes and seascapes; and Nicola Winter’s watercolour landscapes. 6 Harold Place Harold Place was named after Harold Crossley Salt (b.1868 d.1943), the last member of the Salt dynasty to have a street named after him. 6 Harold Place hosts a selection of new and returning artists, with printed stitched paper and textile artworks by Alice Fox; Paula Dunn’s landscapes in oils; Raku fired porcelain figures from Jackie Knight; Myles Linley’s landscapes and townscapes; Alice in Wonderland-inspired bone china tableware by Denise Moloney; and [Vinegar & brown paper]’s contemporary etched vintage glass. 37 Maddocks Street
To this day, the jury is still out on whether or not the street was named after the philanthropist himself or after his son Titus Jr. The one thing that we do know is that 19 Titus St was built during the fifth of sixteen phases in the construction of the village, which dates the house to around the late 1860s. Martin Priestley will once again be opening his home and exhibiting a range of his photographs of landscapes and architecture. Martin is complemented by Kate Lycett’s colourful townscapes and landscapes, which are finished with gold thread and gold leaf. Image: Martin Priestley

Maddocks Street was named after one of the four Bradford businessmen, who took over the mill and the village in 1892, extending the village to the east by way of Caroline Street, Maddocks Street, Rhodes Street and Baker Street. View David Booth’s mixed media, abstract landscapes; Britishness, urban decay, the ephemera of life illustrated in Rosie Crabbe’s photography; Beverley’s Gee’s sculptural mixed media featuring the fantastical world of guardian birds and curious cats; and vibrant acrylic paintings of cockerels by Joan Lawson. New Contemporary Art Installation
by Eoin Shea
Saltaire United Reformed Church, Victoria Road
Saturday 12 - 5pm Sunday 12 - 5pm Monday 12 - 5pm Artist Eoin Shea will be creating a new art installation looping projections made from second hand 8mm home movies and new film material. It will be accompanied by atmospheric, multilayered sounds, made from audio recordings taken from around the United Reformed Church itself. In the past, the artist’s previous work has explored moving images as a way of expressing rhythm and texture, rather than narrative stories.
This commission is funded by Arts Council England and supported by Fabric
There is a rich and diverse history of contemporary art responding to and being presented inside places of worship. In this respect we are following a well trodden path. It is the combination of several factors that makes this initiative unique; we draw together the wonderful ecclesiastical architecture of Saltaire United Reformed Church, along with the World Heritage status of the village of Saltaire, and the opportunity to provide a young contemporary artist at the start of his career with a platform and context to create something new for a public audience to experience.

Away with the Fairies by Viz-Able
Open Sat 5th to Mon 7th 10am to 5pm
How much can we trust our eyes? This work challenges the notion that the ‘camera never lies’. Scenes from local events are re-enacted and then digitally altered to give a false impression of authenticity. The creators of these works take a collective approach to projects by undertaking roles according to their skills: researching, organising, modelling, shooting and processing. Every shot is a team effort. Viz-Able is a group of people with learning disabilities who work with a professional photographer and Hft support staff to explore ideas and communicate with others. Hft is a charitable status organisation that supports people with learning difficulties and their families
This year we have captured the creativity of a range of artists from diverse backgrounds and contexts in a series of exhibitions that take place in pockets of space throughout the village.
These jewels are well worth exploring. Some exhibitions are shining among the Open Houses and others are nestled in cafés and other public buildings. Take some time to consider the ideas emanating from the photography, the experimental drawings, the painting and the mixed media work; they are sure to provide you with food for thought.

Film
Saltaire Arts Trail is delighted to present three artist film events engaging with
analogue film. We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of Bradford City of Film, and the hospitality of our film venues - Salts Mill, Shipley College and the Saltaire Launderette. The film strand is curated and organised by Cherry Kino, an independent organisation dedicated to exploring the artistic possibilities of analogue film.
Storm de Hirsch, 16mm Films
Salts Mill (access from Café into the Opera, top floor)
Sun 6th May
Free
2pm to 4pm
Artist filmmaker Storm de Hirsch was active in the New York avant-garde scene in the ‘60s and early ‘70s, but has largely been omitted from the well-worn ‘canon’ of experimental film. These are joyous, hallucinatory, intensely colourful, dynamic and rhythmical works, created using a variety of techniques including painting directly onto 16mm film and scratching into the film emulsion. This selection of six of her films will be projected on 16mm in a superbly atmospheric top room of the Salts Mill building underneath the old water tank. Dress warmly!
Washday Blues
Film Installation by Martha Jurksaitis Saltaire Launderette, Saltaire Road
Sun 6th May
Free
7.30pm - 9.30pm
A film installation located in the character-filled village launderette featuring film footage of laundry, shot locally on Super 8 and 16mm. Titus Salt famously outlawed hanging washing out to dry in public in the village of Saltaire and although it might seem an outdated rule, some landlords and community associations still try to ban people from hanging out their washing to dry. ‘Washday Blues’ cinematographically celebrates this simple domestic activity, and invites you to consider why landlords, past and present, deem it unfit for public view. We welcome Sponge Tree back to Saltaire Arts Trail in 2012. They can then take their horse to have its fortune told by M ystic Mare Molly who will help them discover what the colours, shapes and patterns they choose, say about them.
‘The Den Experiment’ believe that making dens fires children’s imaginations and acts as an important part of their development. Come and help Chris and the team revive this exciting pastime, enjoyed by children for centuries, and construct a mini fairground village of candy-striped tents.

This year we’re delighted to welcome the schools and colleges from across Bradford and district to Saltaire Arts Trail. Local shops and businesses around Saltaire will become exhibition spaces for some of the most extraordinary, imaginative art work created by the young people of Bradford, ranging from pre-nursery pupils, Special Education Needs students, A-level and college students. The theme is All the Fun of the Fair, so get ready to experience a rich and wild wonderland of different textures, colours and shapes, carnival characters, carousels and candy floss.

Exhibition Building, Exhibition Road
Saturday 5th May 7pm - 11pm Join us for a very special evening of wonder in the beautiful, historic Exhibition Building, as we create a night to remember. Inspired by the original 16th Century Cabinet of Curiosities, Saltaire Arts Trail will put a contemporary spin on the notion of a collection of the exotic and unusual. There is something for everyone throughout the night; in the main room you can watch new works of art being created whilst enjoying a locally brewed ale, or why not have a go yourself on the drawing wall. There’ll be live music from local bands including the 309s and in our side rooms, you can undertake a vintage styling transformation courtesy of The House of Rose & Brown, delight at Cherry Kino’s Super 8 film screenings, immerse yourself in animation, peruse a curated bookshelf, or simply relax on a beanbag whilst letting the words flow past you. This is one night you won’t want to miss.
