EDITOR’S NOTES | ruggedmag

letter from the editor this is rugged magazine issue #1. although creating this magazine was as assignment for my Publication Design class at UVM, this is a project i have been wanting to do for many years. i have always been interested in the art of magazine publication and zine making. in fact, the first zine that i ever subscribed to was called Hate on This, out of california, a badass zine featuring women skaters. since then, my inspiration and style has changed, but i still love skateboarding, and i’m trying to find a balance between street fashion and women’s skating. this is the final showcase of all I have learned this semester about indesign, photoshop, master pages, typography, paragraph & character styles, color meanings, and much more. i would like to note here that all of the advertisements in the magazine were borrowed from the internet and magazines. the interview of nora vasconcellos was conducted by the Girls Skate Network and most of the photography is from the new women’s skate photo book Hello, Skater Girl. the interview of leticia bufoni was conducted by Cooler Magazine. three of the pictures in this magazine are from tumblr, but they aren’t sourced. on the “iron maiden” and“sick sticks” pages the images are sourced. jane, thank you for taking the time to look at my piece, and can’t wait for your feedback. i think i’ve come a long way in this class.

“Hello, Skater Girl” is a photo book that captures the spirit, determination and playfulness of girls skateboarding over a year in 2011. It mixes image, illustration and text to document the lives of several skaters doing what they love to do: skate — at competitions, alone and together at parks, backyard pools and favorite skate spots.

HELLO, SKATER GIRL | ruggedmag

“I’m going to continue shooting through the rest of the year, both near home and anywhere in the world I can get to where girls are skating.”

Rugged: Girls skating..but you’re a boy..how’d you end up doing this? Julian: I started shooting skateboarding as a way to get to know my new town of Venice Beach. Much of the town’s history, culture and spirit is tied to board sports. As a photographer, the camera became an comfortable way for me to get to know the people and the place where I now live. And it had to be skateboarding because I don’t want to get my camera wet. R: What’re you going to do with the money from Kickstarter? JB: I plan to use the money to cover the costs of designing, prototyping and printing a limited edition photo book. The biggest cost is printing, especially for a limited run. This isn’t a money-making venture by any means. I’m not looking to buy gear or cover travel costs or anything like that. I just want a book printed that people can enjoy. I’m going to continue shooting through the rest of the year, both near home base in Los Angeles and anywhere in the world I can get to where girls are skating. R: What’s the goal of the project? JB: My goal is to conclude a year of documenting girls skateboarding with an image and text photography book. Ultimately, I hope the becomes something that documents a moment in skateboarding’s cultural history and can inspire and encourage the sport and the women who participate in it. I’ve been working on this project since Nov. 2010 and plan on finishing by the end of 2011. I’ve already made two “prototype” books as a way to experiment with design and to test the way that the photography works within the context of a book.

INTERVIEW

Rugged: How were you introduced to skateboarding and what got you started? Nora: When I was really young I loved to watch the show Rocket Power, I wanted to be Reggie Rocket! I would mess around on my neighbor’s skateboard and at the time I was also rollerblading and bmxing...oh yea. When I was in middle school I was a competitive surfer and skating bowls was great cross training. I eventually started skating more and really started to push myself, especially in vert. R: Do you remember what your first setup was? NV: It was awesome, a Hobie with plastic trucks and on the bottom there was a cat doing an invert...classic! R: Were there any early influences on your skating? NV: I remember reading an article on Lyn-z when I was about 11 in this surf magazine. I thought it was the coolest thing, so I looked up to her and Bucky. I really had no idea about the scene at the time, but those two were my first big influences.

R: What is the best and worst thing about your hometown? NV: Pembroke is an average New England town. It’s right in between Cape Cod and Boston, its easy to get to the beach and the city. Worst thing is there is absolutely no where to skate and very few people who skate and understand the culture. R: Besides skateboarding, what do you like to do in your spare time? NV: I love to hang out with my friends and family, surf, draw, and paint. R: What is your typical day like? NV: Get up, school starts at 7:40 and I’m out at 2. Afterwards I have homework but if it’s nice I try and get to the new concrete park about 20 min away. It’s small but fun, with a little plaza and bowl. Then I usually workout at Athletic Revolution around 5:30 or 6. My trainer is so awesome and we work on a lot of injury prevention and stretching. Then I go home, feed my cat, and get lost on facebook.

I am working on a girls program up in Rye also and I may be doing some internships. I am just so excited to be able to put so much more time and energy into what I love!

R: Who do you skate with? NV: Davis, Tate, Eamon, Derek, Max, Josh, Zac, Nolan, Nick, Scott, Cam, Ivana, Eric...we have such a great group of kids from Rye and I also love traveling and getting to skate with my friends from all over. LETICIA BUFONI Leticia Bufoni is definitely one to watch. The 15-year-old skater from Brazil is taking the states by storm and is on a determined path to skate world domination… INTERVIEW

Rugged: How did you get into skating? Leticia: On the streets with the kids. R: When did you decide to commit yourself to the sport full time? LB: The first time I stepped in a board I knew it was for life. R: Did you find it pretty hard to break into a male-dominated sport? LB: It was hard to start with and my Dad was super-mad at me because I was the only girl in the middle of eight guys in the skate park!

R: Do you consider yourself to be an adrenaline junkie? LB: Yes, especially when I see gaps, stairs and rails. R: Can you give us a run down of your average day? LB: When I’m home in Brazil, I go to school, come home and take a nap, ride my motorcycle and go to the skate park. After that, I hang out with my family, do my homework and go to sleep. When I’m in the States, it’s a surprise every day! I never know how my day will be. Usually I
