DOMINIC BARNES GRAPHIC DESIGN PORTFOLIO
I’m a freelance graphic designer, videographer, photographer, and illustrator who loves creating designs and images of all kinds. My design skills include digital design, branding, editorial design, advertising, motion graphics, packaging design, UX, and basic Blender. My approach is highly concept-driven, and I prioritise the effect the design will have on the client’s business. I have won awards for illustration and photography. I hope you enjoy my portfolio.
DUBLIN THEATRE FESTIVAL BROCHURE
tools: indesign, photoshop The festival takes a modern approach that aims to involve and challenge its audiences with current, controversial topics, but theatre also has an inherently old-world aesthetic. To represent both sides of this aesthetic, I selected a modern-looking origami-based display typeface. The in-your-face offsetting and large size of the display type conveys the challenging nature and energetic vibe of the performances. The subtle, layered geometric shapes refer to the layers of meaning within the performances. The jutting geometric forms represent theatre spotlights.
THE VERTIGO YEARS BOOK COVER
tools: soft pastels, coloured fineliners, scalpel, photoshop, illustrator This book is about the fragmentation of society in the West prior to the First World War. I used overlapping and fragmented letterforms, dislocating cuts, triangular shards, and garish colours to convey the chaos and confusion experienced by those who lived in these heady times.
PROTEIN BALLS PACKAGING DESIGN
tools: illustrator, lightroom, photoshop, canon 800D DSLR camera I designed the packaging to vertically house 4 protein balls because this shape has great shelf impact and it differs from current market offerings. Uncoated, recycled card and relatively little ink were used to reduce environmental impact as market research indicated this was important to consumers.
BOYNE PROTEIN WEB DESIGN
tools: adobe xd, photoshop
CITIES IN LITERATURE LECTURE SERIES POSTER
tools: illustrator I used a narrow format and condensed type to convey the verticality of cities, a boxy design to represent a birds-eye view of city buildings, and the column at top right to suggest a chimney. The narrow margins represent the crowded nature of cities, while the monochrome colour palette comments on the drab, clinical nature of cities.
THE BUTCHER BOY MOVIE POSTER tools: illustrator The sacred heart, Madonna’s crown, and heavenly rays represent the protagonist (Francie’s) good side and the religious figures he turns to for solace. The church vestments represent his stint as an altarboy. The butchers knife represents his bad side and his murder weapon of choice. The bomb and the mushroom cloud represent the Cold War which added to his mental deterioration.
CRANNOGE ARTS PUPPET THEATRE BRANDING/IDENTITY
tools: charcoal sticks, illustrator, photoshop Since their target market is children, to convey a fun vibe I hand-drew the typography and design elements and used vibrant colours in welcoming, warm hues. The group prioritises community involvement, so I used the square shape and the watery line that emphasizes it to surround the type in an embrace. The condensed type references the stilts some Crannรณgs stand on, and the water motif the water in which they stand.
CAMDEN TOWN BREWERY ILLUSTRATIVE POSTER
tools: illustrator competition entry: ycn, london. results pending. The octopus squirting beer refers to the brewery’s “Ink Stout”. The top hat, monocle, posh moustache, and supercillious expression refer to their “Gentleman’s Wit” beer. The unicyle, diablo, and juggling reference their “Show Off” lager. I mocked up a facebook banner and a Facebook post for the campaign to explore what they might look like.
YOUTH TRAVEL MAGAZINE MAGAZINE ARTICLE DESIGN
tools: indesign, photoshop competition entry: society of publication designers. results pending Since the magazine targets young people who prioritise nightlife, I used a typeface that references neon strip-lights and conveys energy with its shatter effect. I also used the trippy “O as a design motif. The black and white, combined with the pink and yellow add to the dynamic effect, and so do the angled text boxes and type.
WAITING FOR BREXIT POLITICAL ILLUSTRATION

publication: irish examiner This illustration compares the dilly-dallying regarding the implementation of Brexit to waiting for Godot in the Samuel Beckett play. The looming shadows of the Orangeman and the IRA man represent the extremist elements on both sides of the Northern Irish political system which are hoping for a hard border so they can use it as a basis to drum up support for their extremist agendas.
This illustration will appear in an article about the role of the police in Northern Ireland over the years. It depicts the historic disarmament of the Northern Irish police force.
LOOK LEFT MAGAZINE POLITICAL ILLUSTRATIONS
tools: pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, card, scalpel, canon 800D DSLR camera, photoshop publication: look left magazine, issue 27 (pending)
This illustration will appear in an article about Narendra Modi’s right-wing regime in India, and how it is prioritising business interests over its people. Here, Modi plays a snakecharming pipe to woo foreign investors to invest in India. Even the red carpet he has rolled out undulates to the inexorable lure of his musical charms.
