Park West Cooperative Nursery School
Auction And Gala 2014 Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

February 7th, 2014 Dear Parents, Welcome to Park West Coop’s Gala: Color Outside the Lines. It is wonderful that we can all be here to enjoy an evening together, celebrating and supporting Park West. As you may know, I became a parent at Park West in January of 1982. I was an assisting parent with my two children for four and a half years. That time, assisting in the classroom with teachers, working on committees with other parents, and serving on our Board of Directors, had an impact on my life and the life of my family that I couldn’t have predicted all those years ago. Being an assisting parent at school made me a better parent at home. I learned so much from teachers about how to speak with children and how to acknowledge feelings but still maintain a limit. They gave me a better understanding of how children think and learn, as well as a new kind of road map on parenting. I will be forever grateful. At Park West Coop, I found a loving community of parents and teachers, committed to working together to create a school that took children and their ideas seriously. As you look around the room tonight, you can see that community still thriving.

It is important to remember that this lovely event does not just happen. It is a reflection of the thought, planning, work, and love that our Special Events Chairs have put into tonight’s party. Maggie Daniel, Jennifer Moon, and Dominica Fisher have been working on this evening since last spring when they agreed to co-chair our Special Events Committee. I have been amazed by their creative ideas, work ethic, grace, and good cheer. With the support of their committee, as well as all of you, they have given us this special evening. Please enjoy yourself tonight, at this celebratory event, in this lovely venue, in the company of friends. Community is found where ever you look in our Park West Family. Community is here this evening as we joke and dance together – and bid on those special items to support school. Community is in the classroom, abuzz with the ideas of children percolating, and teachers listening and stretching those ideas. Community is at the school door every morning and afternoon with the arrival of the children. And yes, community is in all those committee and board meetings as we work together with pride and love for our home here at Park West Coop. Thank you for being part of the Park West Family. jane 3
Thank you to the Special Events Committee. The Auction Captains, members of the Local Sponsorship team, Auction team, Wine Event team and those who jumped in along the way when help was needed, thank you! Your time, energy and talents were so appreciated and truly made the process fun! To our spouses and children, we thank you for your never ending support. We love you. Jane, Nada & Isaac, thank you for letting us invade the office for months. You were unfazed by our use of the office as our impromptu meeting space, storage locker and our committee’s own Office Max. Isaac, thank you for always letting us borrow a pen or two or three… And for always offering to help us haul box after box. Nada, thank you for being our right hand woman through it all. You had an answer for all of our questions and thought of everything and then some. Jane, thank you for cheering us on every step of the way. You always had words of encouragement or a fist pump to let us know we were on the right track. Your years of expertise kept us on the right track and your knowledge was invaluable. Kelli, thank you for the legacy you left behind in your meticulous documentation and organization of the all of the gala information. Your work made it possible for us to hit the ground running. Thank you also for your help this school year throughout the process.

To the teachers of Park West, where do we begin? We are in awe of your passion for teaching . You’ve loved our children and shown them patience in the most challenging situations. You’ve helped guide us in our interactions with our own children, showing us better and more effective ways of communicating. You’ve answered all of our questions and listened to our concerns with no judgment. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

wine Cont. - CLOSING AT 9:55 #W112 “I am NOT drinking any f***ing Merlot!” Are you as passionate about Pinor Noir as Paul Giamatti’s character in “Sideways”? Then this selection is for you. “It’s not a survivor like Cabernet, which can just grow anywhere and...thrive even when it’s neglected. No, Pinot needs constant care and attention. You know? And in fact it can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked away corners of the world. And, and only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. Only somebody who really takes the time to understand Pinot’s potential can then coax it into its fullest expression. Then, I mean, oh its flavors, they’re just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and... ancient on the planet.” Value: $175
