FALL 2022 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 2021-2022 TRUTH COMPASSION JUSTICE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

Dominican Family and Friends,

This past year was extraordinary in so many ways, and it’s a blessing to be part of a community that loves so deeply and shows such generosity; generosity beyond our greatest dreams, which will help us secure an even brighter future for Dominican High School.

The Knight Vision 2.0 capital campaign has been transformational. The renovations to our science department provide the necessary teaching tools for us to continue advancing our curriculum, and the space and machinery for our successful Robotics program to continue to thrive. Our new athletic facilities have been impactful for our current students and will attract future students. To have an artificial turf field on campus in Dominican’s 66th year is amazing. The increase to our endowment will provide scholarship support for a greater number of students who need financial assistance in order to attend Dominican. Thanks to the Knight Vision 2.0 donors, we are securely in a position to dream big for the future of Dominican High School.

To our Annual Fund and Scholarship donors throughout this past fiscal year, thank you! Your support makes everything we do at Dominican possible. Your participation at events, and generosity toward our fund appeals, ensures our ability to provide the academic and extracurricular programs that help our students reach their highest potential, and the scholarship support necessary for many of them to attend.

We are a community in the truest sense of the word; a community created from a strong mission and strengthened by remarkable people and amazing accomplishments. Thank you for believing that Dominican is worthy of your promotion, your time, and your financial gifts. Together, we are ensuring a successful legacy for generations to come.

Dominican Alumni Gather for Reunion Weekend

Many alumni took part in the Alumni & Friends School Reunion on Friday, August 19th. Festivities began Friday evening at Dominican which included catching up with old friends, viewing yearbooks, and enjoying drinks and appetizers. The evening concluded with the 2022 Young Alum and Distinguished Alum Awards ceremony. Individual class reunions took place at various locations on Saturday, and a record number of alumni participated in the 39th Bill Crowley Scholarship Golf Outing on Monday, wrapping up a fun-filled weekend!

Brian’s enthusiasm for Dominican has stood out for many years. He was the perfect choice for the 2022 Distinguished Alum Award because of his continued presence at Dominican, volunteering his time and talents to many committees and alumni events.

Brian has shared his leadership skills with Dominican’s Board of Directors, serving as Board Chair, Finance Chair and currently as Corporate Treasurer. He created the Arizona Alumni & Friends event which is now in its 4th year, helps with yearly recruitment for the annual Chicago Alumni & Friends event, has been a Career Day speaker and assists the Advancement team during Reunion Weekend. Last spring, Brian served as Dominican’s Assistant Boys Tennis Coach for the Spring season, and is currently the Head Girls Tennis Coach!

Brian recently retired as a Senior Vice President at Bank of America Business Capital where he found the greatest impact in his profession building relationships with his customers and their businesses. His friendships have had such a positive affect on so many. As one of his friends put it, “There is no one who has higher integrity than Brian. He also has an incredible sense of humor.” Brian truly is one of our school’s biggest advocates and models the Dominican core values of Truth, Compassion, Justice, Community and Partnership.

When asked how Dominican impacted him, Brian said, "Dominican has had an important affect on my life in many ways. Specifically, excellent academic preparation for college and professional career, meeting lifelong friends and a foundation of Catholic values. Receiving the Distinguished Alumnus award is an important honor for me and a continued purpose to help Dominican thrive in the future.”

Andy has been giving back to the Dominican community ever since he graduated in 2004 and has been a glowing example of the Dominican High School mission, making him the perfect choice for the 2022 Young Alum Award.

Andy earned a Finance degree at Marquette University and is the Managing Director at Robert W Baird. He has been a speaker for Dominican’s Annual Career Day sharing his work experience with the students. For over a decade he has been an employee participant in Baird’s Dominican auction sponsorship, attending every auction and donating consistently to both the auction and KnightWalk. He also served as a keynote speaker for Dominican’s Knight Vision 2.0 kick-off event and spoke about the importance of Catholic education.

Andy volunteers at Holy Family, serving as a School Board member and liaison to the Finance Committee, and is a co-chair for both their auction and golf outing. He also volunteers as a basketball and Little League coach for his children. One of Andy’s friends had this to say about him, “Andy is awesome, he has the best personality and is a great husband and father. I feel lucky to call him friend.”

When asked what this award meant to him, Andy said, “It was an honor to receive the Young Alumni of the Year award and celebrate with family. It provided me an opportunity to reflect on the positive impact Dominican has had on my life as well as the impact Dominican will have on current and future students.”

KnightWalk Crushes Its Goal

Dominican took to the streets of Whitefish Bay for its annual KnightWalk event on Friday, September 23rd. Students showed up in their best Dominican spirit wear as they walked the 6-mile route to raise funds for school activities such as sports, government, campus ministry, and theater. Parents and businesses donated snacks and water for the kids to enjoy upon their return to school.

A heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of families, friends, and alumni who donated to KnightWalk. A special thanks to our Community Sponsors: Catholic Schools Walk, Affiliated Clinical Services, BMO Harris, Catholic Financial Life, Jimmy John’s, Sendik’s Food Market, The Bay Restaurant, Canopies, Marquette University, Mathnasium-Whitefish Bay, and Palermo’s Pizza. Because of your support we were able to exceed our goal and raise $60,600! U-Knighted we walk!

In 2014, John and Tamara Dunn were looking for a diverse, Catholic high school for their oldest son John that would provide an excellent education and where he would not “fall through the cracks.” They chose Dominican and began their journey as members of our school community.

“Dominican is a wonderful place for young people to be nurtured, further develop their independence and compassion, and be pushed and supported, to achieve their dreams,” said John. “We were so impressed with the students and faculty at Dominican. Teachers go out of their way for students in order to provide them with a high-quality education, and that was extremely important for our family,” added Tamara.

The Dunns spent a total of six years at Dominican between two children. During that time, John served as a Dominican Board and Finance Committee member, sharing his legal expertise developed at Northwestern Mutual, where he holds the position of Vice President & Investment Products and Services Counsel. After their time at Dominican, John and Tamara wanted to make a difference that would last generations, so they created the Dunn Family Endowment Fund, for scholarship funding.

“We wanted to share the Dominican experience with as many students and families as we can,” said John. Tamara explained, “When you listen to the powerful stories from the student auction speakers, you realize that the Dominican family can make a crucial difference in students’ lives. Scholarship endowments can help sustain the accessibility of a Dominican High School education for many more years to come."

Dominican continues to be such a vital component to the North Shore community and beyond. To have a diverse co-ed, Catholic school available to all students is truly an attractive option for families throughout the area. The school’s commitment to enhance and upgrade its facilities, whether on the athletic fields or in the classroom, shows it continues to be committed to generations of future Knights. The recent Knight Vision success is a great example of Dominican’s focus on the long-term vision.

My parents always taught me that strong values would carry me through both the good and challenging times in life. That is why they chose to send me to Dominican. At Dominican, I learned that service, commitment, respect, and emotional intelligence would be necessary to excel in all aspects of our future lives.

Dominican High School and the amazing teachers constantly push me past my boundaries. I’ll be the first in my family to attend a 4-year college and it means so much to my mom and grandparents. I really want to make them proud and set a leading example for my younger sister. Dominican is helping me realize my dreams.

Dominican’s faculty, staff and several Board members attended a retreat at the Sinsinawa Motherhouse in August. The day included tours of the Fr. Mazzuchelli Museum and the Dominicans of Sinsinawa Exhibit, both led by Sinsinawa Sisters. It was a beautiful, spiritual and most inspirational way to kick off our 2022-2023 academic school year.

This is my second year on the TermiKnightors Robotics Team at Dominican High School and I’m so thankful that, because of the team’s size, I have been able to work hands-on with the robot as a freshman. At larger schools, you can’t touch the robot until 11th grade. After going to Worlds last year, I realized how I can make a difference in my community just by being on the robotics team and participating in a STEM activity. I love that Dominican has opened these opportunities for girls like me.

FROM DOMINICAN’S AWARD-WINNING THEATRE DEPARTMENT...

Dominican is proud to present its winter musical, Bye Bye Birdie. Performances run February 10-19, 2023

This timeless classic features incredible 60’s rock music, a funny story, and opportunities for all students. This family-friendly hit revolves around Conrad Birdie, an Elvis-type rock star who has to go back to the Army and is hoping for one lucky to girl to give him "One Last Kiss.” His agent and manager concoct a publicity stunt that leads them to Sweetapple, Ohio, where the MacAfee family and young Kim might just be that girl. Conrad digs the young teenagers and has a blast with them. Kim’s family is in the middle of the madness, and Conrad’s agents discover their true purposes.

With great songs like “A Lot of Livin’ To Do”, “Kids”, “How Lovely To Be A Woman”, “One Boy”, “Spanish Rose”, and “Put On A Happy Face”, Bye Bye Birdie is an absolute hit for all ages.

Together, we raised $144,550 for the Dominican Scholarship Fund during the live paddle raise. A heartfelt thank you to Samir Kebir ‘22 (pictured to the right), who gave a very moving speech the night of the auction. Stories like Samir’s are the reason why we are all so passionate about Dominican High School and why the Scholarship Fund is so important for our students.
