DOMINICAN Honor Roll of Donors 2014-2015
Truth Compassion Justice Community Partnership
FROM THE PRESIDENT
F
Dear Dominican Family, From the very beginning, there was a focused vision for Dominican High School. It started in 1931 with Reverend Peter E. Dietz from St. Monica and Monsignor Farrell Reilly from St. Roberts, two education advocates who strongly believed in the need for a Catholic high school to serve families on the north side of Milwaukee. In 1938, St. Monica purchased land on Silver Spring Drive and in 1948 deeded it to the Sinsinawa Dominicans to establish a high school. Through their zeal and promotion of Catholic secondary education, Rev. Dietz and Msgr. Reilly quickly gained wide-spread support from the parishioners of St. Monica, St. Robert and Holy Family and the vision of Dominican High School became a reality. The ground breaking was held in April, 1953 and Dominican opened its doors in September, 1956. Today, Dominican remains steadfast and true to the mission and values envisioned by Rev. Dietz, Msgr. Reilly and the Sinsinawa Dominicans. Each year our voice gets louder and our audience gets bigger as Dominican alums spread their wings and make positive changes in communities throughout the country. We have doctors, lawyers and educators in almost every state, actors and musicians performing Events Manager Claudia Martin, Principal Ed Foy and President nationally and abroad and numerous entrepreneurs and engineers with creativity Leanne Giese at this year’s KnightWalk. and drive that is moving our country forward. Close to home, our neighboring Photo Courtesy of Beth Manley Catholic schools are led by Dominican alums including Anne Rice ‘81, St. Monica President, Lauren Beckman ‘74, St. Robert Principal and Rebecca Jones ‘79, St. Eugene Principal. Our five core values of truth, compassion, justice, community and partnership are being carried out by our alumni, helping them achieve at their highest potential and use their gifts and talents to help and serve those in need. This Honor Roll of Donors publication highlights the many reasons Dominican has become a driving force in Catholic secondary education and the many people who have helped make it happen. The expertise, guidance and financial support you provide is keeping our vision alive and bright. The growth Dominican has experienced over the past year would not have been possible without your generosity. The belief you have in Dominican High School today is creating positive and visible results for hundreds of young people.
Christ has confidence in young people and entrusts them with the very future of his mission, “Go and make disciples.” -Pope Francis
Most gratefully,
THE DOMINICAN MISSION Our mission is to provide young adults with a co-educational, Catholic, college-preparatory experience based on the teachings of Jesus. Donor Spotlight: Bill and Carol Roche Bill and Carol Roche have an incredible history of support at Dominican High School, and their many roles over the years are proof of their dedication to Catholic education. Their involvement and guidance has directly impacted the trajectory of the school and the success we are seeing today. The Roche’s history with Dominican started in 1989 when Carol was working as the Director of Development at Divine Savior Holy Angels. She’d been there for 13 years but was pleased to see a job opening at Dominican for the school’s first lay Bill and Carol Roche president. Carol was offered the position and lost no time in pulling the faculty and staff together for leadership meetings. “There were some fabulous teachers at Dominican and some of them are still here,” says Carol, “I tried to bring people into the conversation and really encourage staff and teachers to participate in order to keep the school moving in the right direction.” During her tenure, Carol also spearheaded the Create the Future Campaign which raised the funds needed to build the chapel, Campus Ministry programs and to update the science labs. Throughout her six years as President, Carol formed
integral relationships with the Dominican community that have continued to impact the success of the school to this day. Bill and Carol, parents of six, also had three children attend Dominican: Stephen ’94, Charles ’98 and Helen ’00. Carol noted, “I was impressed with the sincere involvement of the parents at the time and that involvement continues to this day – it’s a very loyal group.” The Roches are a perfect example of this dedication. Fifteen years after their last child graduated from Dominican, they remain completely committed to the mission of the school. In addition to her position as President, Carol has also served on the Board of Directors and on the Knight Vision Capital Campaign Steering Committee. Bill and Carol demonstrated their support over the years by attending fundraising and school events like theater productions and they also are among the leading donors in the school’s history. “It’s important for the Dominican community to support the school because it brings a sense of value to the young people in the community during their formative years,” says Bill. Dominican is grateful for the time and the many gifts Bill and Carol Roche have committed to Dominican High School. Their support has allowed the school to excel in ways that are still being realized today. Bill Crowley, our Mr. Dominican, says it best: “Bill and Carol are an outstanding example of how to be a positive influence to Dominican High School and Catholic education.”

KNIGHT VISION
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: August 29,2015 Photo by Beth Manley
KNIGHT VISION: A COMMUNITY ACCOMPLISHMENT In the summer of 2014, Dominican High School began a fundraising effort, the Knight Vision Capital Campaign, for a renovation project on the school’s main entrance and concourse areas. The campaign called for $5 million in donations to make the renovation possible. Fast-forward sixteen months and $5.9 million in donations later and Dominican’s main entrance area has been completely transformed. Thanks to an incredible effort by Eppstein Uhen Architects and CG Schmidt, the Knight Vision renovations broke ground in the beginning of May and were completed in four months, just in time for school to begin in early September. The renovations included a new front entrance, main office, administrative offices, a restored parking lot, updated cafeteria, renovated inner, outer and gym concourses, new bathrooms and new theater dressing rooms.
Dominican was thrilled to unveil the Knight Vision renovations at a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on August 29, and again the following morning at its Back-to-School Mass that welcomed more than 300 people for the liturgy and renovation tours. The construction crews have turned their attention to Dominican’s auditorium and the west side of the school. The auditorium will receive new seats, flooring and paint and updated backstage areas, all scheduled to be completed by December 8, 2015 for Dominican’s Immaculate Conception Mass. At the same time, a parking lot is being added to the west side of the school along North Bay Ridge Avenue, scheduled to be completed in November. This parking will be designated for faculty and staff, opening the entire Silver Spring Drive parking lot for students and visitors. Dominican High School would like to sincerely thank the donors, faculty, EUA, CG Schmidt and construction crews that made this campaign possible. Their generosity helped create the beautiful new spaces for our students, family and community to enjoy. Dominican is grateful for all of the support!

Own a Piece of Dominican Theatre Dominican’s Theatre Department would like the community to play a lasting role in the newly renovated theatre space. The Theatre program has been deeply meaningful to many families in the school’s history and is launching a special funding initiative, “Dominican’s Theatre Stars,” through which you can sponsor one or more new seats in the renovated auditorium. You’ll then have the opportunity to engrave that seat with a plaque celebrating the people, plays, roles, and memories that have built our award-winning theatre program.
Alumni— immortalize your treasured theatre memories and moments on a permanent seat plaque. Alumni Parents—honor your child on a plaque by pairing their name with their favorite role. Fans of the Dominican High School Theatre Program—show your support by engraving seats with your family name and well-wishes for the program. Other opportunities to sponsor your theatre will also be available, including fly rails. This opportunity is possible because Dominican is making major renovations to the school auditorium as part of the Knight Vision Capital Campaign. In addition to installing over 800 new, comfortable theatre seats; upgrading flooring, carpeting, and wall-color; and making major light and sound improvements, Dominican is enhancing the backstage area to an even more professional level, with the inclusion of new dressing rooms. The theatre renovations are scheduled to be unveiled in December 2015. For more information, click on the “Sponsor Your Theatre” tab at www.dominicantheatre.wordpress.com, visit Dominican’s theatre Facebook page at www.facebook.com/DominicanTheatre, or contact the Dominican High School Theatre office at 414-332-1170 ext. 232.

SCHOLARSHIP PADDLE RAISE
2015 AUCTION SCHOLARSHIP PADDLE RAISE Each year, Dominican’s annual auction features a student speaker who shares his or her story of how scholarship support has impacted their life. This year at “A Knight on the Ranch,” Juan Hernandez ’15 spoke about how Dominican prepared him to continue his education at Marquette University. Juan’s story was followed by a scholarship paddle raise which brought in $119,500 in scholarship support for Dominican students. This incredible result was due largely to an anonymous donor who matched each of the attendees who donated at the $1,000 level. Thank you to all of those who participated in the auction scholarship paddle raise! Juan Hernandez ’15

The classes of 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1985, 1995 and 2010 had class reunions this past summer. Dominican would like to extend a sincere thank you to the alumni who stepped up and volunteered to coordinate these reunions. Dominican would also like to thank the classes of 1975 and 1985: each class donated over $1,100 in order to sponsor the beautiful new benches outside the renovated main entrance of the school. 2015 BILL CROWLEY GOLF OUTING
The Cox Family
Bob Hoeller ’69, Bill Crowley, Bill Engibous ’71, Jack Radichel, Chris Spahn ’69
Golf Outing Raises $53,000 for Bill Crowley Scholarship Fund On Monday, August 17, it was raining throughout the Milwaukee area with the exception of Ozaukee Country Club in Mequon, where the 32nd Annual Bill Crowley Scholarship Golf Outing was taking place. Over 100 golfers, and more than 50 additional dinner guests, joined Bill Crowley in support of scholarship funding for Dominican students. Thanks to Event Sponsor, Global Freight Source and to all the donors, sponsors and guests, this was a record-breaking year, raising over $53,000. We were honored to have the entire Cox family in attendance as we paid tribute to Dennis Cox ’80, and his parents, Tom and Patty Cox, good friends of the Crowley Golf Outing who passed away this year. Some say the sun was shining on Dominican golfers because of them.
KNIGHTWALK 2015
As has become tradition, Dominican students kicked off Homecoming Week on October 9, 2015 with its annual KnightWalk fundraiser. Knights could be seen walking all through Whitefish Bay during KnightWalk, sporting their green “Uknighted We Walk” shirts and showing off their school spirit to the community. The event was capped off with Dominican staff performing “teacher feats” – something various teachers and faculty promise to do if students hit their fundraising goal. The “feats” included Mrs.Van Beek dying her hair green, teachers dancing to the “Nae Nae” and faculty playing egg roulette. Not only did Homecoming Week get off to an exciting start, but Dominican broke a KnightWalk record by raising more than $49,000 to support student activities! Dominican would like to sincerely thank the many families, friends and alums who donated and to Event Sponsor Massage Envy Spa and the community supporters BMO Harris Bank, Dunkin’ Donuts, Jimmy John’s, Orange Shoe Fitness and UBreakIFix. Uknighted We Walked!
