Dominican Family & Friends, What an amazing year for Dominican High School! Many incredible accomplishments were celebrated during the 2015-2016 school year, all of which were made possible because of your belief and continued support of the Dominican mission and five core values. Throughout the past year, Dominican honored our newest graduates from the Class of 2016, celebrated an incredible 50th reunion with the Class of 1966, inducted members into our Athletic Hall of Fame and made history with our fifth consecutive WIAA boys basketball state championship. We also completed many facility improvements, funded through our highly successful Knight Vision Capital Campaign. This magazine is filled with Dominican highlights which we hope you will enjoy! Of the many shining moments we experienced, celebrating Dominican’s 60th Anniversary was definitely one of the brightest. Our All School Reunion in August was a huge success and kicked off our new tradition of recognizing and honoring Dominican alumni. This event also brought back Dominican alumni who hadn’t been in the school for decades. Their reaction to the renovations and thriving community of today was truly exciting to witness. Our 60-year journey has not always been an easy one. Dominican has endured the struggles felt by many Catholic education institutions, including declining enrollment, staff transitions and difficult financial times. Thankfully, your commitment and dedication to Dominican has kept us strong through the highs and lows. For that we are very grateful. How do we guarantee another 60 years for Dominican? By carrying out our mission, ensuring effective leadership and following a clearly defined strategic plan. The Sinsinawa Dominicans, our sponsoring order, have already done their part by creating a Leadership Council comprised of lay representatives from each of their eight education institutions. This group of professionals will assist the sisters with the management and guidance of the schools in which they sponsor. John O’Connell, past parent and Dominican’s Corporate Treasurer, serves as our representative on this council. At Dominican High School, our Board of Directors and staff members have evaluated, reviewed and updated our Strategic Plan. It includes targeted objectives, strategies and measurements to ensure we remain steadfast and true to our mission. We sincerely thank you for being part of Dominican High School during the past 60 years. We are confident that Dominican will continue to produce passionate and caring students, transformed through Catholic social teaching, to go out into the world and accomplish great things. We pray you will continue to partner with us as we move Dominican forward. Certainly, many great achievements are ahead for our Knights! With a grateful heart,

Dickmann Lights Up Dominican Theater Dominican alumnus Ben Dickmann ’96 designs state-of-the-art lights for auditorium

In the summer of 2015, Ben Dickmann ’96, his sister Becky ’97 and their father Dave took a tour of the Knight Vision renovations happening at Dominican. While admiring the many upgrades in the theater, Ben noticed the lighting system was exactly the same as it was while he was part of Dominican’s Stage Crew in the 90’s. Ben knew immediately that this was the perfect way he could give back to his alma mater.

Dickmann (far left) and Bryn Van Beek ’97 (third from left) with members of Dominican’s Stage Crew in 1996..

After graduating from Dominican, Ben attended Valparaiso University, majoring in marketing. Continuing his passion that began at Dominican, his on-campus job was with the theater program working as master electrician and programmer. He landed an internship with Bandit Lites in Tennessee and was offered a position upon graduation. With Bandit Lites, he toured with bands, handling their concert lighting for a few years before moving into their marketing department. Ben accepted a marketing position with Martin Professional in Florida, but found the career of a lifetime at Chauvet Professional in product development and has worked there for the past 11 years. Ben serves as a consultant with theater lighting directors, designing and developing actual market needs that are useful, reliable and affordable. As a professional designer of lighting, Ben’s talents can be found in the lighting on

Broadway stages, in university theaters, and soon onstage at Dominican High School. He has been working very closely with longtime friend Bryn Van Beek ’97, Dominican’s Technical Director, and current parent, Mark Herzfeld as they designed a new lighting system for the theater. Very soon, the Dominican theater in which Ben created so many wonderful high school memories, will be equipped with state-of-theart lights he designed. The lights that were chosen for Dominican will include models that will be some of the first off the production line. They are completely digital LED lights that will not produce as much heat as the old incandescent lights, leaving the stage cooler. The lights have more color options than other LED’s, making it easier to change from color to color with fewer fixtures. They will be brighter, crisper and more focused, creating an aesthetically pleasing production environment. “I am both proud and humbled to have the opportunity to be able to provide Dominican with theater lights that I designed. Never did I imagine that my involvement in Dominican’s stage crew would set the tone for my career. I enjoyed my time as a Dominican student and the life-long friends I made there,” Dickmann said. A number of stage crew alumni were very excited to hear about this project and were looking for ways to get involved. Bryn was able to gather a handful of volunteer alumni to install all the wiring for the new lighting system instead of hiring an outside company. This project would not be possible without the help of current parent, Mark Herzfeld and the wonderful Dominican alumni—Once a Knight, always a Knight! If you are interested in helping with the installation, please contact Bryn at BVanBeek@DominicanHighSchool.com.

Board Member of the Year: David Porter The Dominican High School Board of Directors honored former member and past parent Dave Porter as the 2016 Board Member of the Year. Dave served on the board for nine years: 1989-1995 and 20012004 and held the position of Chairman for five years during his service. As a Senior Vice President for WE Energies, Dave’s business background and financial expertise helped move Dominican High School forward in many ways, including the creation of Dominican’s first teacher salary scale. Colleagues of Dave’s who served on the Dominican board alongside him described Dave as having high energy and excellent relationship-building skills. A fellow board chairman, Tom Fehring said, “Dave’s yearly budgeting process kept Dominican financially sound during some very tough years.” Carol Roche, who served as Dominican’s President, worked directly with Dave. She shared how wonderful and enjoyable Dave was to work with. She admired his commitment and dedication to the success of the school. As president of the school and chairman of the board, Carol and Dave organized a retreat at WE Energies for the entire Dominican faculty and staff. It was a huge hit with everyone and helped the school year get off to a fabulous start. Dave and his wife Karen, who passed away in 2011, sent six of their seven children to Dominican; Anne ’86, Carolyn ’87, Maggie ’89, EJ ’93, Tom ’98 and Amy ’02. They were active current parents during the 10 years while their children attended Dominican, and both could be found volunteering at endless functions. Dave and his family continue to participate in many Dominican events throughout the year including our yearly golf outings and auctions. Dave is also the longest consecutive donor to Dominican High School; 34 continuous years! Congratulations, Dave Porter! Dominican High School is grateful for your leadership, guidance and dedication. HARD AS NAILS, TOUGH AS BRICKS Class of 1966 Celebrates 50 Years and Raises over $16,000

The Class of 1966 began planning their 50th reunion over a year in advance with a team of enthusiastic committee members, determined to throw a party their classmates would always remember. This past August, over the course of a long weekend, their hard work culminated in a celebration honoring lifelong friendships that started at Dominican High School. The reunion planning committee was eager to use this opportunity to reconnect with as many members of their class as possible. Using online resources and a network of classmates, they diligently updated the contact information for almost every 1966 Dominican graduate, making personal phone calls and sending handwritten notes to encourage old friends to attend the party. Their final RSVP list included 80 Class of ’66 alumni and four former Dominican faculty members, representing 18 states and Australia, making this 50th reunion one of Dominican’s most successful yet. The party started on Friday, August 12th with a visit to where it all began. The class’s 50th Reunion coincided with Dominican’s 60th Anniversary

8

and many alumni attended the school’s anniversary celebration held at Dominican that evening. “Our 50th reunion was like a huge birthday party, where we ‘unwrapped’ the gifts of our 50-year history throughout the weekend,” committee member Mary Ellen Sweeney ’66 said. On Saturday morning the Class of 1966 had the option of joining

“We appreciated the private tour of the school on Saturday morning,” Sweeney said. “It was not only a wonderful way to reminisce, but it also enabled classmates to proudly view the remodeled facilities and learn how Dominican has continued its faith-filled journey from 1966 to the present.” A break in the afternoon allowed the alumni enough time to get ready for the main event, held at Ozaukee Country Club that evening where they reminisced and danced the night away!

In addition to The Class of ’66 donated $10,000 for the sign, which bears their class celebrating motto, “Hard as nails, tough as bricks, we’re the Class of ’66!” 50 years in their classmates for breakfast and style, the Class of 1966 decided a “Winkie’s Walk” on Silver Spring they wanted to give back to the Drive, a stroll down memory school where their memories and lane ending at Dominican High friendships began. A separate School for a tour of the school’s gift committee was formed to classrooms and new building lead this effort and after meeting renovations. with school leadership, the class took on the ambitious goal of

raising $10,000 in order to install a monument sign on the north campus of the school grounds. The sign, designed with a brick base, perfectly captures the class motto now inscribed on the dedication plaque: “Hard as nails, tough as bricks, we’re the Class of ’66!” The ’66 graduates responded to this call for support with overwhelming enthusiasm and generosity, quickly raising the $10,000 needed to design and install the sign which now resides outside the north campus entrance. To date, the class has raised an additional $6,000 over their original goal, which they have designated to scholarship support. The gift committee has asked their classmates to consider supporting this class scholarship fund on an annual basis, going forward. “I think we set what some might consider an aggressive goal,” gift committee member Tom Flanagan ’66 said. “What blew me away was that once the goal was met, more donations continued to arrive. I think we all recognize that this generosity reflects the influence that Dominican has had on our lives.”

Inaugural Distinguished Alumni Awards Presented

In conjunction with the celebration of Dominican High School’s 60th Anniversary, the school launched two Distinguished Alumni Awards which will honor graduates on an annual basis. This year’s inaugural recipients were acknowledged at Dominican’s 60th Anniversary Celebration on August 12, 2016. The Distinguished Alum of the Year award recognizes a graduate who embodies the Dominican mission and five core values through professional, leadership or service achievements as well as through commitment to and support of the Dominican community. The Young Alum of the Year Award recognizes a graduate age 35 or younger with these same qualities.

2016 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award Recipient

Louie ’61 and Jean (Hamilton ’61) Maier

Louie ’61 and Jean (Hamilton) ’61 Maier, high school sweethearts and members of Dominican’s second graduating class, have been involved and supportive of the school community almost as long as Dominican has been in existence.

Louie and Jean have consistently promoted Dominican while living in the Milwaukee area for the past 55 years. They have served on virtually every Dominican board including leadership positions on the Board of Directors, President’s Advisory Committee, Strategic Planning and most recently the Knight Vision Capital Campaign Steering Committee. Together, Louie and Jean made the largest gift to the Capital Campaign. They have promoted and supported countless athletic, theater and fundraising events not only as alums, but as current parents, past parents and now as grandparents. Two of their children, David ’84 and Louie ’85, and their grandchildren, Calvin ’12 and Jacob Pannemann ’16, graduated from Dominican. Their granddaughter Lily is a member of the Class of 2020.They have also encouraged fellow Dominican graduates to stay connected through their organization and facilitation of reunion-focused events and have continued to spread the good news of Dominican throughout Wisconsin and their second favorite state of Florida. “Louie and Jean are living examples of our Dominican mission and we are so honored to have them as members of our school community,” Dominican President, Leanne Giese, said.

2016 Young Alum of the Year Award Recipient Amy Brown ’01 followed her Dominican career by graduating in four years with a double Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management and Public Relations, Advertising and Applied Communication Amy Brown ’01 from University of St. Thomas. Afterward, Amy quickly rose in rank at Trade Press Media Group, now serving as their Director of Education, Conferencing and Membership. “Dominican was a place where I really deepened my faith and was able to expand on the community service aspect that has stayed with me my whole life,” Amy said of her time at Dominican. Over the past 15 years, Amy has remained involved at Dominican on an annual basis, supporting the school’s fundraising efforts as one of only four young alums in her age group to donate to the Knight Vision Capital Campaign, serving as the Solicitations Auction Chair and Silent Auction Set-Up Chair, and creating and leading organization efforts for the Young Alum Auction Benefit Party, an event which has grown to be a favorite at Dominican. Amy regularly attends the Crowley Golf Outing, the Auction and other school events throughout the year. One of Amy’s nominators had this to say about her, “It is not uncommon for graduates to leave high school and never look back, give back or reconnect for several years, if any. For Amy that connection has remained strong and she is truly a role model. Amy exemplifies all of the core values, especially that of community.”

NOMINATE DOMINICAN ALUMNI FOR THE 2017 AWARDS Dominican is now accepting nominations for the following distinctions, to be announced by June, 2017. Mural Captures Dominican’s Beauty Current parent Tim Haglund creates mural for renovated outer concourse

Dominican’s Knight Vision Capital Campaign brought several beautiful additions to the school including new administrative offices, a renovated main entrance and a new gathering area in the outer concourse, which included 480 square feet of blank white wall. “That wall in the concourse area just beckoned for something,” current parent and artist Tim Haglund said. As soon as the renovations were completed in August, 2015 it was clear that the updated outer concourse area was missing something. That’s where Tim came in. Tim’s paintings can be seen all over the state of Wisconsin from the Whitefish Bay Library to hotels, health care facilities and private residences. Tim was contacted to gauge his interest and determine the feasibility of the project. He knew it would be a massive undertaking because of

10

DOMINICAN HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

the sheer size, but even more so, because he had to capture the essence of Dominican High School in a 10’ x 48’ space. “We really wanted to make sure that this wall would represent the belief, the vision and the values of Dominican High School,” Dominican President, Leanne Giese said. After meeting with different members of the Dominican community and staff, there was one common message that was conveyed: the mural needs to represent the five core values of the Sinsinawa Dominicans which are truth, compassion, justice, community and partnership. With that in mind, Tim went to work on the mural in his studio, only appearing every so often to provide a sneak peak of his work to confirm that he was headed in the right direction. After several months of work, Tim emerged with six separate motifs each with their own unique image and meaning. The motifs are separated by paintings of trees and on each tree is an

engraved scripture passage and a symbol from the Bible. It is safe to say that the mural exceeded the expectations of everyone involved in the process. “We’re hoping that our students develop a great appreciation for the time and talent that went into this. We’re hoping that it draws them in and makes them think about their own experience at Dominican,” Giese said. There is no doubt that the mission of conveying Dominican’s five core values in the mural was accomplished. “I wanted this work to be universal. As in, you always find something new in it. So if you are looking for truth, justice, community, partnership and faith, you will absolutely find it,” Haglund said.

Weight Room Facility Gets Lift Over $38,000 was raised for new equipment and facility upgrades

It is no secret that Dominican athletics have been trending up. In 2016 alone, the girls volleyball team hosted a playoff game for the first time in five years, the baseball team made a run in the playoffs, the football team made the WIAA playoffs for the first time ever, and of course the boys basketball team won its fifth-straight state title. To match the success on the field and court, Dominican is turning its focus to its athletic facilities.

Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, over $38,000 was raised for athletic renovations.

“We are very proud of what our teams have accomplished over the past few years,” Dominican Athletic Director Joseph Grady said. “Now it’s time for our facilities to reflect our athletic standards.”

With the exception of three new power racks that were purchased in 2004, Dominican’s weight room hasn’t seen any upgrades in several years. That all changed this summer. With the money that was raised at the Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony, Dominican purchased several brand new items including: three power racks, three platforms, all new dumbbells, a treadmill, two glute ham machines, one functional trainer and new medicine balls, plyo boxes and TRX trainers.

In April, 2016, Dominican athletics took a huge step in making the idea of facility upgrades a reality. At the 2016 Athletic

Along with equipment, upgrades were also made to the room itself. The entire space received new paint and the hydro

room was re-painted and two stainless steel sinks were installed. Beginning in the fall of 2016, a nationally certified strength and conditioning coach was hired to oversee the weight room four days a week after school. The strength and conditioning coach is available to any student looking to create a personal work out, as well as to all Dominican coaches to create workout plans for their respective teams. “The goal is to give our athletes the best possible opportunities to succeed at Dominican and this weight room renovation is a big step in that direction,” Grady said. “We are very grateful to everyone who contributed to this project and the positive impact it will have on our athletes and programs.”

Support Dominican Through Planned Giving The David Becker Society was established to recognize individuals or families who have included Dominican High School in their estate planning. David Becker was a member of the Class of 1976 who left Dominican a generous portion of his estate. A charitable bequest to Dominican not only furthers your lifetime commitment to our school, but also provides significant tax benefits. Please contact the Advancement Office at (414) 332-1170 ext. 172 to learn more about planned giving at Dominican High School.

“Dominican was good to me when I needed it and so giving is just paying it forward. I would invite anyone from my era, if they have not already, to visit. You will find examples abound of DEDICATION (teachers), KINDNESS & PRIDE (everyone), and true real world DIVERSITY of cultures, thoughts and talents all UNIFIED in the most powerful way possible: by EXAMPLE. So, give it some thought and if nothing else, put Dominican in your will. Some deserving kids will have a better life because you did.” Michael Drescher ’75 Thomas and Barbara Slater John and Margaret Slattery Jim W. Scholarship Paddle Raise On April 23, 2016, Dominican’s annual auction, “Knights Along the Riverwalk,” featured student speaker, Mariet Bejarano, who poignantly shared her story of how scholarship support made a Dominican education possible for her. Mariet, Class of 2016, spoke of the impact Dominican has had on her life; the paddle raise that followed broke all records bringing in $149,000 in scholarship support for Dominican students, thanks in large part to an anonymous donor who matched every donation made at the $1,000 level. Thank you to everyone who participated in this history-making paddle raise!

Dominican Joins #GivingTuesday Movement for Year Two! Goal: $10,000

For the first time last fall, Dominican participated in #GivingTuesday, the global initiative encouraging people to give back to an organization they believe in. Generous Dominican community members donated to the school throughout the day, including a number of alumni under the age of 30 whose gifts were matched by members of the Board of Directors. All told, over $7,000 in donations were made to the Annual Fund online within a 24 hour period on December 2, 2015. This year, #GivingTuesday will take place on November 29th, the Tuesday after

Thanksgiving, and we want YOU to save the date! Not sure what it’s all about? Here are some commonly asked questions:

1. On Tuesday, November 29th, go to www.dominicanhighschool.com/donate to contribute to Dominican’s Annual Fund

What is #GivingTuesday? We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, November 29th, people around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

2. Share your support with your friends and family by using #GivingTuesday on Twitter @DominicanHS and Facebook @Dominican High School

How can I help? This year, Dominican asks you to support the school by joining the #GivingTuesday movement and giving a gift to Dominican’s Annual Fund on November 29th. It’s easy and a gift of any size makes a difference:

Why is my gift important? Dominican High School relies on Annual Fund contributions to support the yearly operating budget. Every dollar we receive goes toward providing the best education possible for our students. Our Annual Fund goal this year is to raise $1,000,000 and to increase participation in all of our constituent groups. Thank you for your support!
