Dominican Family & Friends, Recently, we both celebrated a milestone birthday, turning ages that some high school kids might think are, you know, “kind of old.” It’s ironic how the older you get, the more you realize that age is just a number based on the year you were born. Being involved at Dominican puts an insightful perspective and positive light on the concept of age, as our community is bursting with amazing and gifted people of all ages; people with energy and optimism like none other. Their love of life, curiosity for learning and constant pursuit to make their communities better for everyone is inspiring, and in all honesty, slightly exhausting to keep up with. You will find many articles in this magazine that highlight the community members we are referencing. For instance, the group of ladies who planned a four-day 50th reunion celebration for their classmates, organized a scholarship fund for incoming freshman and created a beautiful clock that now hangs in the art room. The ’69 alums who kept the Crowley Golf Outing lively late into the night, long after those younger had gone home. (Mr. Crowley stayed late with them, too.) The featured ’61 alumna, Kathleen Griffin, who could run circles around us between her work schedule and travel. We also see this in our Sinsinawa Dominicans, women who have devoted their lives to their ministry and remain in leadership roles well into what should be their retirement years. Like Sr. Priscilla Wood, who led our board & staff retreat in August and Sr. Peggy Brennan, a dedicated volunteer in our new Mazzuchelli Academic Center (MAC). Dominican is a shining example of a community that works together to live, model and promote its mission. Throughout the past year, each of you has generously shared of your time, talent and treasure with Dominican, and because of you, the class of 2017 became alumni and the class of 2021 has begun their Knight journey. On behalf of our board of directors, faculty, staff and students, thank you for your support of Dominican. We continue to be humbled by your generosity and promotion of Dominican in your greater community. Together, we will make the year ahead shine brightly. We look forward to celebrating all things Dominican with you. God’s blessings and sincere thanks for your partnership,

Rooftop Event Funds Bathroom Upgrades “Flush Fund” Rooftop Event Raises $31,000 for Bathroom Remodels It’s no secret that the bathrooms in Dominican were badly in need of an update. Low water pressure, missing stall doors and locks that didn’t work were among the many complaints, and for good reason. Most of the bathrooms in the academic wing of the school haven’t been touched since 1956.
Patty, Tim ’10, Andy ’04, Lisa, Ben ’09 and John O’Connell
Bathroom renovations were needed, but the entire cost of the project was not budgeted for. Fortunately, Greg Uhen, past parent and CEO of Eppstein Uhen Architects, the firm that completed the Knight Vision Capital Campaign renovations just two summers ago, offered Dominican a great fundraising opportunity. Eppstein Uhen Architects, located in the Third Ward, recently completed a beautiful rooftop terrace overlooking the Milwaukee skyline and Lake Michigan. Greg offered the space as a venue for a summer evening soirée
and, although a bathroom “Flush Fund” is significantly less glamorous than the elegant rooftop, it provided the perfect opportunity for a fundraiser. On July 21st, 100 Dominican friends gathered together for drinks, appetizers and a spectacular view of the city. In addition to the donated venue, alumni-owned businesses graciously provided the food, beverages and rentals for the evening. These donations left few expenses to be covered and Dominican’s generous guests donated $31,725 that evening, enough to complete the bathroom renovations immediately. Each of the six bathrooms in the academic wing received a long overdue restoration in time for the new school year. New entry doors, ceilings, stall partitions, mirrors, light fixtures and dispensers were installed. In addition, the tile walls and travertine floors were deep cleaned and polished, giving each bathroom a clean, updated look. Dominican is deeply grateful to all those who attended the July rooftop event and donated to the school’s “Flush Fund.” Thank you to Greg Uhen, CEO of Eppstein Uhen Architects, Amy Ferrante Gollwitzer ’82, owner of Ferrante’s Restaurant, Tom Greguska ’93, owner of Discount Liquor, Bill ’85 and Shelly ’84 Wong and Dave Hudak ’85, owners of Canopies Events, for providing the venue, food, beverages and rentals for the event.
Board Member of the Year: Mary Domer ’66 The Dominican High School Board of Directors honors former member, alumna and past parent Mary (Wohlrabe ’66 ) Domer as the 2017 Board Member of the Year. Mary committed herself to serving on the board from 2003-2008. She was a member of various board committees including the academic committee where her expertise as a teacher and educational specialist was invaluable and played a significant role in her ability to assist in providing academic direction for Dominican. She was also instrumental in the planning of the annual St. Dominic’s Dinner and personally wrote thank you notes to all St. Dominic Society members. Since graduating in 1966, Mary has been a true advocate for Dominican. Mary married her high school sweetheart, Tom ’66 and they sent their daughter Julia ’97 to Dominican, as well. As a family, they are still very active in the Dominican community attending the yearly golf outing, the annual auction, as well as various benefit parties. In 2007, Mary was awarded the Sr. Duchesne Maxwell Volunteer of the Year Award. In 2011, Tom and Mary created the Dr. Fred and Dorothy Domer Endowment Scholarship in honor of Tom’s parents, to provide financial assistance for students who would otherwise be unable to attend Dominican. One board member stated, “Mary is like a pitbull when it comes to her love, dedication and support for Dominican.” Thank you and congratulations, Mary. Our school community is better because you are a part of its past, present and future.

50 YEARS OF STAYING YOUNG Class of 1967 Celebrates 50 Years and Raises over $18,000 for scholarship support
The Class of 1967 began planning their 50th reunion over a year and a half before it took place this past August. The committee met monthly and communicated weekly, scouting venues, brainstorming activities and connecting with as many classmates as they could. Together, they organized an unforgettable weekend for their fellow classmates and the entire Dominican community. In addition to planning their reunion, the committee wanted to do more. In honor of their love and appreciation for the education they received at Dominican, they created a one-time, $2,500 scholarship for students from the Class of 2021. They worked together to create the application requirements, which included a written essay. After reviewing the submissions, it became clear that the incoming Class of 2021 was a talented group. The committee hoped they would be able to raise $5,000, providing scholarships for as least two students. Within 10 days of sending out their reunion invitation, including information regarding the

scholarship opportunity, they met their $5,000 goal, so they kept going. To date, the Class of 1967 has raised over $18,000, the largest reunion class gift to date,
“I have a tremendous feeling of pride in the Class of 1967 for the generous spirit with which they gave. Every donation mattered. Every donation came from the heart to help a young student succeed at Dominican today,” committee member Anita Fleisch said. On August 18, they kicked off their reunion weekend where it all began, at Dominican High School for the Alumni & Friends Reunion. There, they presented another gift to Dominican: a clock with the lyrics to Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” that now hangs in the art room as a reminder to all Dominican students that time, itself, is a gift.
On Friday evening the ’67 alums held a pre-party at Water Street Brewery to welcome everyone to town. “I remember standing at one end of the room and looking at everyone there. It was about 10:00 PM and people were still giving hugs to each other, conversations were still in full swing, and I remember thinking how fantastic that was, after 50 years and some five hours into the evening,” Fleisch said. “Many who came to this reunion had not been back since graduation, yet there we all were, laughing, talking, and remembering what we all had in common - the Dominican experience - each in our own way, yet as one class.” On Sunday, the Class of 1967 gathered in prayer, at Mass with the rest of the Dominican community. Afterward, they met with several of the scholarship recipients and their families. “It was the perfect way to end the weekend. The students’ youth and spirit reminded me of my time at Dominican and showed me the importance of giving back to my alma mater,” committee member, Kate Gruning, said.

Bill Crowley Scholarship Golf Outing A SUN-SATIONAL SUCCESS What could possibly make the Bill Crowley Scholarship Golf Outing any more special than it already is? How about a solar eclipse? On Monday, August 21, 130 golfers celebrated golf and camaraderie in support of Dominican at Ozaukee Country Club. It was the 34th year at this beautiful course, and the perfect venue to view the solar eclipse. The evening’s highlight was undoubtedly when long-time supporter, Bob Trussell ’69 spontaneously donated a TempurPedic mattress to Bill Crowley who was outbid in the live auction - a fitting show of respect to the man we affectionately call “Mr. Dominican.” Thank you to our Event Sponsor: Jim and Sherry Weatherly, and to the many other sponsors, donors and guests who helped us raise $50,000 for scholarship assistance. Special thanks to Will Jelacic ’17, for being the scholarship speaker!
KnightWalk 2017 KNIGHTWALK RAISES FUNDS AND SCHOOL SPIRIT Students and faculty showed Dominican pride like never before on Friday, September 22, kicking off Homecoming week with the annual six-mile walk through Whitefish Bay and raising funds for school activities. After the walk, faculty and staff performed stunts as a reward for reaching the $50,000 goal. Art teacher Jessica Janzer cut her hair to donate; Coach Spencer Smith brought down the house in a lip sync performance that included Mama Keller strutting her stuff; and several teachers bravely took a pie in the face. The favorite teacher stunt this year took place in Chemistry classes when Science teachers, Isabel Utschig and Melissa Senn, turned the Chem Lab into Professor Snape’s Potion Class. Special thanks to Event Sponsor Catholic Financial Life and to community supporters Bayshore Dental, BMO Harris Bank, Dunkin’ Donuts, Jimmy John’s, Massage Envy, MathNasium, and Sendiks for partnering with us to offset event costs. The Dominican community is truly UKnighted. Thanks to the hundreds of family, friends, and alums who donated, we not only reached our $50,000 goal, but exceeded it - breaking all records by raising a total of $60,000.

Dominican Honor Roll of Donors
Welcome to the MAC
Dominican’s library received a $100,000 renovation to become 21st Century learning space In the past few years, Dominican has renovated and upgraded several spaces; the school’s library was added to that list over the summer. Through the generous support of two foundations, Dominican’s library has become a 21st century innovation center: a place where students work collaboratively using some of the most advanced technological resources available. Research has shown that schools supporting active use of technology tools and devices produce creative learners and problem solvers. Knowing that, Dominican’s administration began researching the ways in which universities are incorporating technology and research to ensure we are preparing our students in the best way possible. In 2016, the Nast Family Foundation made a generous donation to help transform our outdated library into an innovative environment that would encourage cross-
disciplinary research, group discussion and experiential learning. In December 2016, the Tom and Mary ’66 Evslin Foundation provided the technology needs for the new collaborative spaces, including Clevertouch interactive flat screens and streaming technology stations. Over the summer, old books were sorted through and the entire renovation was completed. A vote was held for the naming of the new space and the “Mazzuchelli Academic Center,” MAC for short, was chosen in honor of the founder of the Sinsinawa Dominican Order, Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli. There is no doubt the upgrades to the MAC have allowed and encouraged Dominican’s students to work collaboratively and more effectively integrate technology into their academics and research.
“The MAC combines new educational technology with space for students to learn collaboratively with other students as well as adults,” Principal Ed Foy said. “This flexible part of our campus will prepare students for the type of individualized learning experiences they will encounter on a college campus.” In just a few months, the MAC has become the centerpiece of the school during the school day. Staff members are stationed there for academic help, along with students working the “Tech Help Desk,” assisting students with any laptop/technology issues. “Students love the MAC! From 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. each day, this new space is buzzing with students hard at work. Our students love having a home in the middle of our school where they can get work done, complete group projects or visit a staff member for extra help.” Dean of Students, Vincent Murray, said.

CREATING A LEGACY Rebel with a Quick Wit The story of David Becker ’76, whose courageous life and generous spirit inspired a legacy In the fall of 1972, a young man stepped into Dominican’s halls, ready to start his freshman year of high school. He carried a cane to help him walk, a hard-earned accomplishment following time spent in and out of a wheelchair, months of physical therapy and numerous operations throughout his middle school years. His new classmates may have noticed his physical impediment at first, but his determined and strong-willed personality quickly caused them to overlook it. “You could tell he wasn’t healthy, but you forgot it once you got to know him. He was a trouble maker and a David Becker’s Senior Photo rebel with a quick wit. But above all, David Becker was always kind,” says Richard Genett ’76. These words are used repeatedly to describe David Becker ’76, a faith-filled, kind-hearted and courageous man who understood he needed to live life to the fullest with the time he had. David was born with neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. Although treatment and pain management were ever present, David was never defined by his disease. He earned multiple degrees, traveled the world and gave back to his community. David passed away on January 4, 1997 at the young age of 39. When Dominican received a large gift from David’s estate, school leadership was determined to find a way to honor his memory and generous spirit. That year, The David Becker Planned Giving Society was established, and although Dominican has proudly included this giving society in publications year after year, the history of David, the man, has never been told. This is his story.
Teacher and traveler
David’s physical limitations, which began after his diagnosis around the age of 11, never kept him from being an active leader during his time at Dominican. If anything, it encouraged him to be even more involved. “David overcame so much at a young age and because of that, he really wasn’t afraid to do anything,” says David’s sister, Linda (Becker ’74) Dean. David managed the football team, was student council treasurer all four years, played chess and could be found at all the school’s sporting events and dances. Classmates recall his distinct intelligence, although he rarely showed off in the classroom. One friend remembers David spending a class period not listening to the lecture, but instead attempting to determine how many times a day the hour and minute hands of his watch were perpendicular to one another. “He was the forever thinker,” says Linda. Peter Mullaney ’76, met David at Dominican and the two remained best friends for the rest of David’s life. “David had an adventurous spirit, a wonderful sense of humor and an authentic enthusiasm for life,” says Peter, “He knew he wouldn’t live a long, healthy life – as many of us assume we will – so he didn’t procrastinate. He had fun. He took risks. He didn’t waste time complaining or feeling sorry for himself.” After graduating from Dominican, David moved to California where he attended Santa Clara University and received his bachelor’s degree.
12
Dominican Honor Roll of Donors
At San Jose State University, David earned his master’s in Education and History. He spent many happy years in California, teaching, tutoring children and enjoying the beautiful weather. He also traveled extensively, touring Alaska and visiting England, Ireland and other European countries with Peter. In the early 90’s, David found it necessary to return to Wisconsin. His health was failing and it helped to be near family and friends. One young woman in particular became a friend and caretaker for David, helping him prepare meals and keeping his home in order. David, always thinking and always persistent, decided Maria and his good friend, Peter, would be perfect together. Soon, the three of them were inseparable, going to church and running errands together. Peter and Maria would later marry, thanks to David’s matchmaking. During this time, David also reconnected with Dominican, and in March of 1996, he attended the auction. In a tradition that continues today, the school was auctioning off one reserved parking spot for a student to use throughout the year. That evening, David continued to bid on this item, despite the fact that he didn’t have any children attending the school. By the end of the bidding war, the David with Peter Mullaney ’76 on a trip to Ireland in 1989. parking spot was his for $2,115. David promptly donated the parking spot to the student council treasurer, honoring the position he had held for his four years at Dominican. David’s sister, Linda, says, “During his time at Dominican, he was given many opportunities to be involved and always felt included. David’s generosity was an example of how important his time at Dominican was.”
David’s legacy
David attended Catholic school for twelve years and it shaped the man he became. “He took his Catholic faith seriously,” says Peter, “He went to Mass every Sunday, despite the physical effort required as he became increasingly disabled. And he planned for life after death. His gift to Dominican reflects that.” David Becker embodied the values of the Sinsinawa Dominicans in his passion for life, his love of teaching and his incredible generosity. The bequest he included in his estate has helped secure Dominican’s future and fulfill its mission of providing an exceptional, Catholic education for thousands of students. His gift also inspired the establishment of a giving society that now includes many other generous community members, including David and Linda’s mother, Lois Becker, who passed away in 2015. David’s legacy lives on through The David Becker Planned Giving Society, and Dominican is grateful for all those who are a part of it. “David’s life was a gift, and for him, to give back meant everything,” says Linda.

I am proud to support Dominican because I believe so strongly in the community we are providing for our students. As an alum and faculty member, I want the students I work with to have the same great experience that I had as a Dominican student. Following in my dad’s footsteps and having the ability to give back to the community as a teacher, coach, mentor and alum means the world to me and my family.

Since my parents and brother have all graduated from Dominican, it allowed me to know a little bit of what to expect out of this high school--that it’s a faithbased, friendly community where you can always find someone to talk to, help out with something, or just be your friend, and that’s exactly what I have found here. All of our children have graduated from Dominican, however a few years ago I did ask them whether they felt that Dominican had prepared them adequately for college. Without hesitation they answered “yes.” As parents, we also found that not only had Dominican prepared them for college life, but for life beyond school. Dominican is a great school, building a solid foundation for children to launch into life. Scholarship Paddle Raise Dominican’s April 8th “Knight Cruise” auction scholarship paddle raise broke all records. Senior Corey Guy ’17, now attending Morehouse College, gave an uplifting and heartfelt speech about the path a Dominican education has afforded him. The scholarship appeal that followed was inspiring. In addition to many $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500 donations, we were blessed to have a generous benefactor offer a match for every $1,000 gift. In a matter of minutes, FIFTY generous donors raised their paddle at the $1,000 level, bringing our grand total to over $200,000. Thank you to everyone who made this record-breaking night possible.

Remember Dominican on #GivingTuesday! How can I help? This year, Dominican asks you to support the school by joining the #GivingTuesday movement and giving a gift to Dominican’s Annual Fund on November 28th. It’s easy and a gift of any size makes a difference: This November, Dominican will participate in #GivingTuesday, the global initiative encouraging people to give back to an organization they believe in. In 2016, generous Dominican community members donated to the school throughout the day, bringing in $8,600 for the Annual Fund within a 24 hour period. This year, #GivingTuesday will take place on November 28th, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and we want YOU to save the date! Not sure what it’s all about? Here are some commonly asked questions: What is #GivingTuesday? We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, November 28th, people around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.
1. On Tuesday, November 28th, go to www.dominicanhighschool.com/ donate to contribute to Dominican’s Annual Fund 2. Share your support with your friends and family by using #GivingTuesday on Twitter @DominicanHS and Facebook @ Dominican High School Why is my gift important? Dominican High School relies on Annual Fund contributions to support the yearly operating budget. Every dollar we receive goes toward providing the best education possible for our students. Our Annual Fund goal this year is to raise $1,000,000 and to increase participation in all of our constituent groups. Thank you for your support!
