Dominican Family & Friends, The 2018-2019 academic school year is off to a fantastic start! In August we welcomed our freshman class which is comprised of students representing more than 35 different feeder schools. Together, they have become Dominican’s Class of 2022. Our fall sports teams all celebrated great success. Three teams hosted first round regionals, including football which advanced to playoffs for the second time in three years! Additionally, two amazing plays have already graced our auditorium. We are really proud that over 58% of our students have participated in one or more extracurricular activities during the first quarter, which is a great start to our yearly goal of getting every student involved at Dominican. Campus ministry, class retreats, and service experiences are in full swing as well, which are truly the heart and soul of what makes Dominican special. Our Class of 2018 graduates are nicely settled into their respective post-secondary destinations and many have already returned to visit us over their fall break, which is the best form of compliment. The faculty and staff truly relish the success of our Dominican graduates, so keep coming back alumni! This magazine highlights and recognizes people, events, and activities that make our community flourish and shine. Dominican alumni are making a huge impact on their alma mater and our greater society in so many ways. One cannot help but be inspired by the love and commitment alumni have for their Dominican, as well as the longevity of support, dedication and promotion received from past parents, foundations, and friends. Each of you are the cornerstone of Dominican and your support will ensure that we remain a thriving Catholic, college-preparatory high school for generations to come. Theresa and I see it as both an honor and privilege to serve in our respective roles, and it remains our top priority to lead the Dominican community with a steadfast focus on carrying forth our school mission and the Sinsinawa Dominican core values of Truth, Compassion, Justice, Community, and Partnership. Thank you for supporting Dominican through your generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure. May the Lord continue to bless you and your family. Go Knights!

What’s New at Dominican?
The 2017-18 school year brought some vital enhancements to Dominican
Dean of Students Vinnie Murray (left) and President Leanne Giese receive School Safety Grant.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice awarded Dominican High School a total of $38,233 as part of the state’s School Safety Grant Initiative. The funds will be used to upgrade both external and internal security at Dominican, creating a safer environment for our students to learn. Johnson Controls employees volunteered their time and talents to put high-visibility numbers on every exterior door to the school. The project was funded by a grant from Blue Sky Involve, an employee-driven program from Johnson Controls that helps out in the community. Ken Wirth, Annemarie Scobey-Polacheck ‘86, Tom Kister, Jack Kister ‘19, Kris Palen Firer, Claudia Martin.
Dominican installed new energy efficient lighting, replacing 66 old fixtures with 50 energy efficient LEDs. This project was made possible through a $5,000 grant from the We Energies Foundation and will save over 94,000 watts per day. A mural designed for the Mazzuchelli Academic Center (MAC), commemorating the legacy of Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli and his impact on Dominican High School.
New drinking fountains were installed on every floor, replacing the school’s original outdated, and nonfunctioning water fountains. The bubblers were largely funded by interest earnings from our student investment account.

Board Member of the Year: Bill Curtis
Each year the Dominican High School Board of Directors selects a former member who consistently went above and beyond in their commitment and dedication while serving on the board. Bill Curtis was selected as the 2018 Board Member of the Year. Bill and his wife Terry Kenney ’72 Curtis, have been active members of the Dominican community for the past 14 years and are the proud parents of three graduates: Genevieve ’07, Maura ’09 and Will ’11. As a board member from 2004-2010, Bill served on nearly every sub-committee and held the position of Chairperson from 2008 to 2010. Under his leadership, Bill assisted Dominican as it navigated through two leadership transitions, using many hours of vacation time to serve as the Interim President for the 2010-2011 academic school year. “Bill’s excellent finance background and solid business knowledge really helped us move the school forward during a very difficult time,” Principal Edward Foy said. Bill facilitated a “town hall” meeting with parents, faculty, staff and key Dominican stakeholders, and provided the reassurance that the school would run smoothly through the transition. He and Terry hosted leadership parties at their home to engage Dominican parents, gaining valuable insight to help move the school community forward. Bill created an “Angel Fund” to assist families that were unable to pay tuition and also co-authored successful grant applications to two Milwaukeebased foundations which funded scholarship support. Today, Bill serves on Dominican’s Compensation Committee where he continues his passion to ensure that faculty and staff salaries are competitive in the Milwaukee marketplace. The expertise Bill Curtis brought to Dominican is one of the main reasons we are a thriving Catholic school today and we are truly grateful for his leadership.

Excerpts from the Alumni Award Speeches
Distinguished Alum of the Year: Rebecca Jones ’79 “Throughout my life there has been a consistent thread which is Dominican High School. As a freshman, eager, nervous, and wide-eyed I was able to experience Dominican’s culture and spirit first hand. Under the guidance of caring teachers, I was given the opportunity to unpack my gifts, to grow in my spirituality, and to be encouraged to excel. I have wonderful memories of being a cheerleader especially at the back-to-back state basketball championships junior and senior year.” “(Eamonn O’Keeffe) and I met in room 126 which was later converted to the St. Dominic Chapel. We were blessed to be married in the same room where we met. Eamonn and I intentionally chose August 8th the feast of St. Dominic for our wedding because we wanted to honor how God has shown himself to us through the community of Dominican High School.” “One mantra of the Sinsinawa Dominicans which has been infused into Dominican High School is: ministry is relationship. Dominican is much more than a high school for our family. It is a community. This uniquely blessed community of Dominican has shaped us, comforted us, inspired us, challenged us, guided us, and loves us. The Dominican shield, the Dominican Kelly green, the Dominican “smell” are all a part of me and my family.”
Young Alum of the Year: Aaron Schmidt ’01 “Being back at Dominican to receive the Young Alum of the Year Award was truly a wonderful experience. I had the opportunity to reconnect with many of my past mentors including Mr. Schaetzke, Ms. Ash and Mr. Schreiner. It was important for me to convey to them how instrumental they were in putting me on my current path--not just professionally but also ensuring that I grow to become a kind and compassionate individual.” “I looked up to them back then as a student at Dominican and continue to do so now many years later: they continue to shape the lives of so many young men and women and that is inspiring; they exemplify everything I strive to be as a mentor now that I have my own trainees and students.” “I also had the opportunity to spend some time with other alumni, in particular my dear friend Ryan Hetchler ’06 who I was in many theatre productions over our years together. Together on the stage again, we reminisced about the wonderful experiences we had on those floorboards. It was a magical place, the Dominican theatre, and it continues to be to this day.”

Bill Crowley Scholarship Golf Outing CELEBRATING 35 YEARS On Monday, August 20th, 124 golfers and an additional 45 dinner attendees came together to celebrate a special tradition for a meaningful cause. The 35th Annual Bill Crowley Scholarship Golf Outing welcomed a record number of over 80 alumni at Ozaukee Country Club. Founders of the outing, Bill Rinehart ’65 and Ted Moreau ’65 were the keynote speakers. They shared memories of the first golf outing held in 1983 which had only six golfers and raised $285. Today, the Bill Crowley Golf Outing raises $50,000 annually in support of scholarship assistance. Thank you to all of our sponsors, donors and guests who helped make the 35th anniversary so memorable.
KnightWalk 2018 KNIGHTWALK RAISES FUNDS AND SCHOOL SPIRIT Dominican pride was truly felt through the streets of Whitefish Bay on Friday, September 21st as Dominican students and faculty walked their annual six-mile route to raise funds for school activities. After the walk, students enjoyed special treats and entertainment as a reward for reaching the $50,000 goal: Cupcake-A-Rhee’s cupcake truck came to Dominican with some sweet treats, an exciting lip sync battle took place between Mr. Mironovich and Crew, The Dominican Girls Group (special guest appearance by Elevation choreographer, Chris Gilbert), and Coach Spencer Smith accompanied by the members of the football and track team, and several teachers bravely took a pie in the face. Thank you to Event Sponsor, Catholic Financial Life, and to community supporters Bayshore Dental, BMO Harris Bank, Dunkin’ Donuts, Jimmy John’s, Sendik’s, Fields Auto Group, The Bay Restaurant and Marquette University for partnering with us. Special thanks to the hundreds of family, friends, and alums who donated. Because of your support we were able to exceed our goal and raised $53,000. UKnighted we walk!

The Darwin Effect
Remembering Dominican’s Past and Ensuring Dominican’s Future career and could reduce the most complicated concept to language that we could understand. It was amazing that I was able to take both Organic Chemistry and Nuclear Chemistry as a high school student. Mr. Kaestner’s instruction and course expectations rivaled my college-level courses. Since he was such an inspiration to me, I’ve designated that grants be made annually in memory of Darwin Kaestner for the greatest needs of the Dominican Science Department.” Sue attended Vassar College and received an A.B. degree in Astronomy and Physics. She returned home, enrolled at UWMilwaukee and earned her BBA degree in Accounting. Sue started her career in public accounting, becoming a CPA and specializing in the taxation of Estates and Trusts. For many years she served as a Bank VP and Trust Officer and finished her career with a law firm's Trusts and Estates group, retiring last year.

Susan Mischler ’66 has many fond memories from her Dominican days and cherishes the faith, friendship and knowledge developed and fostered throughout her four years. Recently, Sue became the newest member of the Dominican Legacy Society by designating an annual grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation endowed fund she created this year. “Dominican made a huge impact on my life and I want to ensure students for many generations have the opportunity to experience and benefit from an excellent Catholic education.” Sue was Sinsinawa Dominican educated for 12 years starting at St. Robert Grade School in Shorewood through her graduation from Dominican. She greatly appreciates her Dominican education and stated she believes the Sisters were very focused on creating a school culture rooted in faith and values, but were equally dedicated to providing students with an exceptional college-preparatory education. The Sinsinawa Dominicans provided a solid, faith-based education both in their direct classroom instruction, as well as expecting it from the lay teachers they hired. “I was lucky that so many of my teachers were enthusiastic and true experts in their specific field of study.” One teacher in particular was Mr. Darwin Kaestner, a retired Chemist that taught courses at Dominican from 1964-1977. “He was so dedicated in making teaching his second

Three Generations of Dominican Tradition
Amidst Milwaukee’s rich landscape of Catholic high schools, Dominican is relatively young. Established in 1956, Dominican is only now seeing its third generation of Knights begin to walk through the doors. But the third generation is growing quickly… Dominican is currently home to not one, but THREE triple-legacy families: The Donlows, the Maiers, and the Rouses. Three different families who share the same love of Dominican.
Meet the Maiers “I think you wanted to attend Dominican because you had a crush on me,” Louie added kiddingly. After graduating from Marquette University and getting married, Louie and Jean worked for the Maier’s family investment business, employing many Dominican alumni. “Dominican graduates always had an excellent work ethic, were very knowledgeable and highly focused. Some of our best and brightest employees were Dominican alumni,” Jean said.
Back: Louie IV ’85, Louie V ’22, Louie III ’61 Front: Lilly ’20, Jean ’61, Lucy ’22
Louie Maier III ’61 and Jean Hamilton ’61 walked into Dominican High School for the first time 61 years ago and have been active in the Dominican community ever since. As members of Dominican’s second graduating class, Louie and Jean loved their high school years and shared how grateful they are for the lifelong friendships created not only with their classmates, but with dozens of Dominican alums and past parents. “Our classmates came from a lot of different communities but everyone knew everyone,” Louie said. “The culture and environment created at Dominican made students feel important and valuable to the community. It’s something unique to Dominican which we feel remained a constant while our kids attended in the 80’s, as well as today for our grandchildren.” “What’s most valuable to us is that Dominican continues to provide an environment that promotes the importance of family, Christian values and education. It’s why we love this community so much,” he added. Another aspect that was true in the 60’s and still today is how the cost of tuition and the commute were issues families struggled with. Jean’s family moved to Richfield after her freshman year and her father said she had to transfer to the local public high school because of the distance as well as the cost of tuition. “I begged my father to let me return to Dominican and he only agreed to it if I would get a job to help pay for the tuition and take the Greyhound bus to and from Dominican,” Jean said. “I got a job and agreed to take the bus until I got my driver’s license. My grandfather gave me his car.”

Dominican Honor Roll of Donors
While two of their four children attended Dominican, Dave ’84 and Louie IV ’85, Louie and Jean were very active parents, serving as board members, presidents of the Parent Association and chairpersons for Dominican’s auction. “We promoted Dominican to everyone we met. In fact, we like to take credit for encouraging people like Bud and Mary Brauer to get involved. Still today their family is very active at Dominican.” shared Louie. Dominican has remained true to its mission in many ways, but an area that has been enhanced is the focus on providing service learning experiences for students through Campus Ministry. “Our kids are not only learning about and providing for the needs of Milwaukee’s most under-served neighborhoods, but instilling expectations to create change for these families.” Louie IV ’85 shared. The Maier family has remained highly supportive of the school throughout the past 60 years. In 2014, they served as co-chairpersons for the Knight Vision Capital Campaign which raised $6 million dollars for building improvements. “We were students when the school was brand new, and the renovations brought its appearance back to a similar high level,” Louie III shared. Today, Louie and Jean are the proud grandparents of nine, with five being Dominican Knights, including Cal ’12 and Jake ’16 Pannemann, and Lily ’20, Lucy ’21 and Louie V ’22, creating the Maier family tri-legacy. “Dominican has continued to be a community that feels more like our extended family, role models the values we hold important and provides a college-preparatory education that prepares graduates to succeed,” Louie III said.
Meet the Donlows
Londen Sr. hoped that Londen Jr. would have the same transformative experience he had. “When I entered Dominican as a freshman, I didn’t play any sports. By the time I left, I was a State Champion [in basketball]. I wanted that for my son. I told him ‘No matter what you decide to pursue, whether it’s academics, sports, or theater, or anything else, with some effort and the combined support you get from the teachers and coaches at Dominican, you can be a champion too,’” Londen Sr. said. According to Londen Sr.’s mother, Karen Sledge-Donlow ’81, the biggest change she sees from her time at Dominican is that students no longer have to wear uniforms. But the fundamentals haven’t changed.
Londen Jr. ’21, Karen ’81, Londen Sr. ’00
Londen Donlow Sr. ’00 credits Dominican for keeping him from going in the wrong direction. “Before attending Dominican, let’s just say I wasn’t the greatest student. From the moment I started at Dominican, I felt very supported. The teachers, combined with my family, made every effort to make sure I succeeded, and I did,” Londen Sr. said. When it came time to decide where to send his son, Londen Jr. ’21, Dominican was a no-brainer. “There are things going on in society today that weren’t happening even a few years back, things that make a faith-based school more important than ever.”
Meet the Rouses
“I see the family atmosphere and the school spirit still going strong. I remember so much about my days at Dominican – a school trip to Spain, basketball championships, friendships I built. I loved every minute of my time at Dominican. I never wanted to miss a day of school because it was so much fun.” Grandson, Londen ’21, agrees that his favorite thing about Dominican is the fun. “There’s always something fun going on like KnightWalk, scavenger hunts, football games. The school spirit is amazing.” According to Londen Sr., in addition to school spirit, there’s something else that hasn’t changed, “When I walked through the door on Londen (Jr’s) first day of school, and saw Mama Keller still sitting at the front desk, it was amazing. I think we were the first class to start calling her Mama!” It’s a good thing some things never change.
“Catholic education was a big priority for us. Coming from St. Eugene, we felt it was important to stay on the same path.” Dominican was their number one choice for Nathaniel and for their younger son, Mitchell ’20 who became a Knight one year later. Beth credits Dominican’s family-like community with helping her find lifelong friends. “I’ll admit that my freshman year was a little tough, but by sophomore year, I found friends that I am still friends with today and will be friends with forever.” Beth added that the size of Dominican is part of what makes it special. “If you want to be involved in something, you can be. Nathaniel had never played soccer before, but he tried out and made it, and has had a great time.”
Beth ’86, Mitchell ’20, Nathaniel ’19, Susan ’62
Susan Konczal ‘62 was a member of Dominican’s third graduating class. “We had uniforms back then and everyone came from the same local grade schools. Almost every teacher was a nun. There were hardly any lay teachers so it was very different than it is now,” Susan said. When it came time for Susan and her husband LeRoy to send their oldest child, Beth, to high school, Dominican was the obvious choice. “It was a great school and a Catholic education was very important to us,” she said.
“I love that you can get involved in different things and meet all kinds of people you might not have gotten to meet, because of the small environment and the diversity of the school,” Mitch said. The third Rouse generation is thriving. Nathaniel “Nails” ’19 is an honors student taking a heavy AP workload, playing soccer and varsity baseball. Mitchell ’20 is on high honor roll, plays varsity volleyball and tennis, and is a member of the Theatre Stage Crew. Will they send their children to Dominican when the time comes? “Absolutely,” Nathaniel said. “I want my kids to experience the same things I’ve been able to at Dominican.”
Fast forward to fall of 2015, Beth ’86 and her husband Ken felt the same way about choosing a high school for their oldest son, Nathaniel.

“Our family’s engagement with the Dominican High School community is deeply rooted, multigenerational and joyful! Returning to active participation this year with a newly enrolled freshman, we find that the heart of the DHS mission maintains a premium value on relationship development. It is both the how and why DHS discover their God-given gifts, build community, and identify life’s purpose.”

“The outstanding science education I received at Dominican played a significant role in my success in the field of engineering physics. Mr. Crowley, Mr. Kaestner, and Sister Antoine were passionate teachers that imparted upon us a deep appreciation for the scientific method. “Dominican’s community spreads joy in so many ways and I believe it’s because at the heart of all Sinsinawa Dominican ministry is relationship. Dominican High School is rooted in many long-term relationships of teachers and staff, students, parents, alumni and friends, all sharing their many gifts of time, talent and treasure. It is this generous giving of self over many years that makes DHS such a special and caring community.” Sr. Ann Marie Palmisano Principal/President 1985-89, Board of Directors, Sinsinawa Dominican Sponsorship Council George A. Inspired by a speech from Dominican Senior, Elisa Guzior ’18, who told of the impact scholarship support has made on her life, the generosity that filled the room was show-stopping. With an anonymous match for every $1000 gift, and a spirited competition to win a bottle of champagne for being the last to raise a paddle at the final $100 level, many supporters gave multiple times… with the grand finale being $170,000 raised in support of scholarship funding. Bravo, and thank you!
