Dominican Family & Friends, We hope you enjoy the highlights and articles that are included in this Honor Roll of Donors publication. You made them possible through your support of Dominican High School and we are grateful. Thank You! We are so proud of all that has been accomplished at Dominican and know that the best way to ensure a successful and proactive future is through continued strategic planning. Dominican has been steadfast in following ours, most especially over the past decade. The Board of Directors recently approved the 2019-2024 Strategic Plan which concentrates on the specific areas that will further enhance the Dominican experience and serve as our roadmap for continued success, including: Mission/Governance, Recruitment/Retention, Academics/Innovation and Advancement/ Engagement. Throughout the strategic planning process, we placed an emphasis on working in partnership with our Catholic feeder schools to strengthen Catholic education, K-12. Demographic

research indicates a slight decline in Catholic school enrollment, so finding ways in which to work together will positively impact Catholic education on a greater scale. Currently, Dominican leads retreats for several surrounding Catholic middle schools, led by our Campus Minister and student ministry team. We also offer an advanced math course during our zero hour for advanced middle school students. Over the next five years, we plan to add programs like Junior Robotics, Forensics and additional advanced coursework for middle school students; programs that will assist our feeder schools in providing resources for their students as well as marketing opportunities for all schools involved. Our strategic plan also includes creating internship opportunities with Dominican alumni in the areas of technology, engineering, medical, etc. for our seniors who have already determined their desired course of study at the post-secondary level. These experiences will offer our students firsthand experiences and a better understanding of the career path they plan to pursue. Catholic education is vitally important to the Catholic mission and we believe our graduates are living examples of its value and worth in our greater society. Dominican integrates Catholic faith and values throughout its entire curriculum, and our graduates soar in college because of the academic excellence, supportive environment and healthy social relationships developed throughout their four years. Our alumni are actively helping their broader community and are making a difference in the world around them. With your continued promotion and financial support, we can keep Dominican High School alive and thriving for generations to come. Blessings and many thanks for your support of Dominican,

Tom Popalisky Named Board Member of the Year

From Left: Tommy ‘10, Joey, JoAnn, Teddy ’10, Leslie, Tom and Susie

There are so many wonderful people who continue to be champions for Dominican High School, one in particular is Tom Popalisky. Dominican was pleased to honor Tom with the 2019 Board Member of the Year Award for his time, dedication and leadership during his board term from 2008-2014.

6

Dominican Honor Roll of Donors

During his tenure, Tom led the Buildings and Grounds Committee and also served as Chairperson during his final year on the board. Known by many as a “tireless servant and leader,” Tom took his board position very seriously and was always willing to do whatever it took to strengthen Dominican.

When Tom’s board term concluded, he transitioned immediately onto the steering committing for Dominican’s Knight Vision Capital Campaign, where he helped create a long-term infrastructure assessment that continues to guide our building and grounds decisions today.

Michelle Rindt, a fellow board member and past parent stated, “Tom was a call to action guy and if something needed to be done, he made sure it happened.” Tom streamlined board meetings so that members could focus more time on their respective committees and ensure productivity and success in every aspect of the school. Tom was also instrumental in navigating Dominican through the tough financial times of the recession, making it a stronger business because of his foresight and leadership.

Tom’s love for and commitment to Dominican High School is an incredible gift. His big personality and zest for life brightens every event he attends, and an event without Tom is a rarity. Tom is a true blessing and we are grateful for the endless ways in which he continues to positively impact our school community.

Dominican Alumni Gather for Reunion Weekend Dominican’s 2019 Alumni & Friends All School Reunion took place on Friday, August 16th, drawing several hundred alums spanning 63 years of our school’s history. With food catered by Peter Piccurro ’77 of Miss Katie’s Diner, old school music, historic photos, and yearbooks from each class, alums enjoyed reminiscing and catching up with friends. The evening culminated in an awards ceremony to honor this year’s Distinguished Alum of the Year, Ted Moreau ’65 and the 2019 Young Alum of the Year, Makda Fessahaye ’07. Here are some excerpts and highlights from the award presentation.

Distinguished Alum of the Year: Ted (T.J.) Moreau ’65

Young Alum of the Year: Makda Fessahaye ’07

As a founding member of The Bill Crowley Scholarship Golf Outing, for his service with the Board of Directors, as well as leadership roles with the Auction and multiple class reunions, Ted was honored for the many ways he has supported Dominican for over 50 years.

Makda’s list of accolades at such a young age made her a clear choice for Dominican’s 2019 Young Alum of the Year. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies from Northwestern University, Juris Doctor from Marquette University Law School, and was named a “Rising Star” by Marquette University Law School in 2018. She is the youngest person to serve as the Administrator for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections’ Division of Adult Institutions, which oversees 36 correctional facilities and employs over 7,200 employees.

Ted shared a story about his days as a football player in high school when he refused to serve a detention Sister Hermana issued to the whole class. He was unable to serve due to a football game and Sister Hermana wasn’t happy about it. “Eventually, I apologized, and finally served my detention. A week later, we had another big game -- they were all big -- and while warming up, I looked up, and there I spotted Sister Hermana sitting in the stands for the first time. She came to every one of my games for the rest of the season. So I guess the Dominican Sisters’ core value of Compassion was really true, and I will forever cherish the memory of Sister Hermana as well as all of the other nuns that impacted my life.” “God Bless them and God bless Dominican for what it was and what it still is. I am very proud to not only receive this award but also to have been a part of Dominican for all these years and for what Dominican was when I was there, but also for what it is now. I truly believe that Dominican is one of the most unrecognized success stories in secondary education in the lives of many of the 8,000 graduates.”

Makda is President-Elect for the Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers, a Supervising Attorney for Madison’s Unemployment Appeals Clinic and co-founder of Brunch of Professionals. As a Dominican student, Makda was involved in student government, theater, tennis and choir. She more recently has been involved with Dominican by sharing her work experience with our current students as a Career Day speaker. “It is a true honor to be recognized by my alma mater as the Distinguished Young Alum of the Year. Dominican High School’s mission and values have set me up to become a socially conscious, faith filled young professional dedicated to using my skills and talents to assist the community at large. I am indebted to the faculty, staff, volunteers, and the community for providing me with a rich and robust high school experience, and for continuously supporting me as I progress in my career. I am proud to be a Dominican High School alumna and am humbled to receive the 2019 Distinguished Young Alum of the Year award.”

NOMINATE DOMINICAN ALUMNI FOR THE 2020 AWARDS Dominican is now accepting nominations for the following distinctions. Nominations are due by April 1, 2020. Distinguished Alum of the Year: Recognizes a graduate who embodies the Dominican mission and five core values through professional, leadership or service achievements as well as through commitment to and support of the Dominican community.

Young Alum of the Year: Recognizes a graduate age 35 or younger who embodies the Dominican mission and five core values through professional, leadership or service achievements as well as through commitment to and support of the Dominican community. KnightWalk 2019 KnightWalk Dodges Rain and Reaches Goal

A little rain couldn’t stop our Dominican pride! The forecast predicted a rainout for October 11th, but miraculously held off long enough for students to walk their Whitefish Bay route and raise funds for school activities. After the walk, students enjoyed special treats and entertainment as a reward for reaching the $50,000 goal. Dominican’s theatre department kicked off the celebration with two songs from the fall musical, Bright Star; music teacher, Sarah Parlier serenaded the crowd by playing several songs on the recorder with her nose; and teachers played a daring game of egg roulette where Communications Manager, Spencer Smith managed to be the only one without egg on his face. Thank you to the Event Sponsor, Catholic Financial Life, and to community supporters Bayshore Dental, BMO Harris, Jimmy John’s, Mathnasium-Whitefish Bay, Sendik’s, Target, Palermo’s, The Bay Restaurant and Marquette University for partnering with us. Special thanks to the hundreds of family, friends, and alums who donated. Because of your support we were able to raise $54,000. UKnighted we walk!

FAITH in ACTION Dominican Students Share Ministry with Middle Schoolers

Most high school students wouldn’t dream of going back to middle school, but Dominican students are jumping at the chance to work with area middle schoolers as part of Campus Ministry’s Middle School Retreat Program. For the past three years, Dominican’s Director of Campus Ministry, Nate Friday ’09, has been taking Dominican students to local middle schools, where they lead small group interactions, reflection, and prayer.

The retreats are completely student-led. Dominican students work within Campus Ministry curriculum to plan these retreats and take time off from their own school day to facilitate them. Friday finds the small group interaction works particularly well in this peer-to-peer format. “Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders tend to be more open when working with high-schoolers,” he says. “It’s less intimidating and more personal for them.”

Faith is universal and it’s amazing the way they can express their faith even to complete strangers. - Mary Parlier ’20

The middle school students get a glimpse of high school life through their interactions. According to Holy Family Service Program leader, Steve Haberman, “it gives them a sense of confidence for high school.”

12

Dominican Honor Roll of Donors

“It’s surprising how willing they are to open up to you,” Parlier said. “Faith is universal and it’s amazing the way they can express their faith even to complete strangers.”

“Providing middle School retreats is a great way for our students to strengthen and share their personal faith and leadership skills,” Friday said. “It’s also another way of fulfilling our charism to be the Order of Preachers.”

Dominican senior and retreat leader Mary Parlier ’20 loves working with the younger students.

Rebecca Jones, Principal at St. Eugene School, has found the retreats to be an invaluable experience for their students. “At St. Eugene we value the importance of retreat experiences for our middle school students and we are blessed to partner with Dominican High School,” Jones said. “The student facilitators and retreat leaders are great role models. They demonstrate faith in action and give witness to the Gospel message. Our students love their retreat experience at Dominican because they are challenged to bring Christ into their everyday experiences.”

The theme for this year’s Middle School Retreat Program is Dominican Saint Catherine of Siena’s quote: “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.” While the retreats help middle school students find who they are meant to be, the theme is equally fitting for the Dominican students as they explore their own spirituality, discover leadership talents and learn more about who God meant for them to be.

Catholic Grade School Teachers and Administration Weigh in on Dominican’s Middle School Retreat Program “In my religion classes I asked both sixth and seventh grade what they liked best. They liked the way the high school students treated them. They felt the meditation session was helpful and that they liked seeing high-schoolers living their faith/religion. They felt the activities were beneficial in their life. We have actually tried some of the same activities throughout the year because the kids liked them so much!”

- Faith Stecker St. Francis Borgia 6th Grade Teacher

“The Saint Monica eighth grade students enjoyed a fabulous religious retreat with Dominican High School in September. The Dominican student leaders were in tune with the eighth-grade mindset, and took care to develop sessions with important topics that all of the students could identify with. Sessions about personal responsibility, faith, how to foster meaningful friendships, and leadership resonated with our students. Saint Monica School looks forward to enjoying future sessions with the Campus Ministry at Dominican High School.”

Mike Landgraf – Principal, St. Monica School

“There are so many benefits to a student-led retreat. The Dominican students made a positive impact on my middle schoolers. They demonstrated leadership, poise, reverence, and treated each one of the students with respect. They were good role models for the 6th-8th graders and my middle school teachers remarked that the students were more open to sharing their thoughts and ideas than they normally are when the retreats are led by adult leaders. I was very impressed with the Dominican students and look forward to them coming again for a retreat this year.”

Amanda Matthews – Principal, St. Joseph Parish School

We realize a fundamental peace from within when we think of others first. Catholic education provides many opportunities for us to achieve that inner fulfillment. It’s not always easy to put someone else’s needs before our own, but when we hear the message of giving throughout the school day, we begin to believe we can achieve it. Sometimes we live the message early in life. Sometimes the message takes longer to make its way to our heart. God sees to it that each generation carries the message to the world through Catholic education.”

Catholic education is important to me because it allows you to make connections to your faith across all subject areas and it does not compartmentalize it as something only practiced on the weekend. The values that were instilled in me during my Catholic education drove me to become a Catholic educator because I wanted to live out those values and also instill them in others. Dominican’s 39th Annual Auction, “Game Knight,” took place on April 13, 2019. As always, the highlight of the dinner program came from our student speaker. Maria Tijerina ’19 gave a moving speech, recounting the many ways her Dominican education has opened doors for her. The following guests brought their A-game, raising nearly $140,000 in support of scholarship assistance to open doors for more students like Maria:
