View From the Top As a majority of Dominican’s outreach and recruitment has been forced to move to virtual experiences, a drone was deployed in September to capture the beauty of Dominican’s location near the lake in Whitefish Bay.

From the President & Board Chair Dominican Family and Friends, November is the month we recognize the many blessings in our lives for which to be thankful. As a Sinsinawa Dominican School we celebrate the founder of our order, Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli, which makes November very special at Dominican. One of Fr. Mazzuchelli’s most notable quotes is, “Go where the work is great and difficult.” Your Dominican continues to carry out this expectation. Knowing that in-person learning is the most effective method of instruction, our priority to bring our students back to campus for the 20202021 academic school year has been accomplished thus far. By following our Return to School Plan, Dominican has successfully provided in-person learning for all of our students, five days per week since August 19th. Our plan established protocols to keep our students, faculty and staff safe, incorporated guidelines and best practices from President Leanne Giese and Board Chair John Desing the health department and created alternative and online instructional scenarios if Dominican should need to transition to virtual learning. Many have asked how we are able to accomplish this task amid a pandemic while so many surrounding districts in Milwaukee County have been unable to find success. Our response remains the same, it’s because we are Dominican. Because we are Dominican, our incredible faculty and staff go above and beyond for our students. On a daily basis, academic assignments are uploaded onto software platforms along with recordings of their instruction to meet the needs of their in-person and virtual learners. Because we are Dominican, faith experiences including Mass, student preaching and class retreats continue to be an integral aspect of the Dominican education. While service experiences are not possible, our uKNIGHTed Service Program has replaced them with guest speakers on a variety of issues, including social justice. Because we are Dominican, our athletic and theater departments have implemented changes which make extra-curricular experiences possible. These activities are vital to our students’ growth and development. Because we are Dominican, our admissions, advancement and marketing teams are working collaboratively to enhance Dominican’s online presence and incorporate virtual events into their programs. Experiences like these are highlighting the beauty and excellence of Dominican for both our prospective families and supporters. Admissions is ensuring families interested in a Catholic education are able to fully understand why Dominican is the best high school choice. Advancement is engaging our alumni, past parents, friends and foundations so they continue to recognize the enormous value in supporting Dominican. Because we are Dominican, you, our donors, have helped us meet the challenges of 2020. Your encouragement, outpouring of support and continued promotion is what sets this community apart and makes it so incredibly special. For 64 years, Dominican has provided an exceptional Catholic education based on our Sinsinawa core values of: Truth, Compassion, Justice, Community and Partnership. It is because of YOU that our mission thrives. Thank you for the many ways in which you have supported Dominican over the past year. Your gifts of time, talent and treasure made a significant impact on all that we have been able to accomplish. We are honored that Dominican is worthy of your support and we remain grateful beyond words. God bless and Go Knights!

DISTINGUISHED

ALUMNI AWA R D S

Q&A with 2020 Distinguished Alumni Winners The Dominican High School Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony was put on hold last August. Since the official celebration of our award recipients won’t take place until next Summer, here’s an opportunity to learn a little bit about what makes them who they are and how Dominican played a role in their lives.

Distinguished Alum of the Year: Terry Flanagan ’74

Why is Dominican special to you? Dominican is a diamond in the North Shore. As a student, I never felt like a number. Every teacher knew my name and treated me with respect. I had friends that went to other schools and they were known by a number. Dominican being a smaller school has a big advantage for learning and social aspects. What motivates you to give back? I’m motivated to give back because I want to make sure Dominican is around and strong in the future so others can enjoy what this school has to offer. I want others, including my grandkids, to have this advantage if they so desire. Tell us about a special Dominican memory or moment in time. My best memories include the lifelong friendships that I made in high school and participating on the first state basketball team at Dominican.

Young Alum of the Year: Mark Darnieder ’06 Why is Dominican special to you? Dominican is special to me because of all the relationships I made. I have had great friendships develop even since leaving Dominican with people who I wasn’t as close with while I was there. I also have many friends with whom I have remained close, not to mention my wife. It is almost like going to Dominican is all you need to start a relationship from a place of mutual respect and friendship, and the shared experiences act as a great bond.

Mark ’06 and Maura Parnitzke ’06 Darnieder with daughter Elin

What motivates you to give back? I am motivated to give back because of the example of those who came before me. Both my family and the Dominican community have instilled in me a sense that if you are blessed, as I have been, it is your responsibility to give back. I feel I owe it to the people who give back, the people who need help, the people who have helped me, and to myself, to be someone who doesn’t just take from life, but who makes the world a better place. Tell us about a special Dominican memory or moment in time. Many of my favorite memories of Dominican are related to my time on the golf team. I made a lot of friendships that last to this day with people in my class and classes other than mine through the golf team, and we still get together and reminisce about our time at Dominican. Golf is a game that teaches you lessons about yourself, some of them brutal, and that is certainly true when you play the game on a team every day in March through May in Wisconsin, but mostly I remember laughing and having fun with my fellow Knights.

Crowley Scholarship Golf Outing CROWLEY GOLF OUTING BREAKS RECORDS The 37th Annual Bill Crowley Scholarship Golf Outing took place Monday, August 17th at Ozaukee Country Club under blue skies that transformed into a fabulous sunset for the after-golf patio social. During a summer hampered by Covid restrictions, golf was deemed one of the safer activities to participate in. Guests were hankering to play, demonstrated by the event selling out in record time. In the midst of these challenging times, Dominican’s indomitable spirit and support was stronger than ever, breaking event records with $65,000 in scholarship funding for Dominican students. Thank you to Event Sponsor David J. Frank Landscape, and to the many sponsors, donors, and players who made this event such a success.

KnightWalk 2020 NEW-LOOK KNIGHTWALK, SAME SCHOOL SPIRIT

KnightWalk looked a little different this year, but the school spirit was stronger than ever! Each class took turns walking through the streets of Whitefish Bay on Friday, October 9 to raise funds for school activities. Back at school, students rotated through different stations enjoying activates such as; trivia with Campus Minister, Mr. Friday; a fashion show donning their best Dominican gear with English Teacher, Ms. Wiencek; a paper airplane flying contest in the gym with English Teacher, Mr. Weiler; spike ball and other activities outside with Athletic Director, Joe Grady. This year, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee’s Annual Soles for Catholic Education provided a challenge match and Dominican participated in their annual service project by collecting gently-used shoes for St. Vincent de Paul. Thank you to the Event Sponsor, Catholic Financial Life, and to community supporters BMO Harris, Bayshore Dental, Canopies, Jimmy John’s, The Bay Restaurant, Palermo’s and Sendik’s for partnering with us. A special thank you to Sendik’s for providing lunch for our students that day and to the parent volunteers who prepared it. A heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of families, friends, and alumni who donated. Due to overwhelming support from the community, we were able to exceed our goal and raise $57,000. UKnighted we walk!

Dominican has been able to navigate in-person instruction this fall thanks to the efforts of its faculty & staff It was a summer of uncertainty. As schools across the country mulled what instruction would look like in the fall of 2020, it seemed there were more questions than answers. Would schools have to teach virtually? Would students be able to be in the building? How many days a week would be feasible for in-person instruction? The answer for Dominican was always a clear one. If it is possible to teach in-person, Dominican will make it work. While Dominican is capable of offering meaningful virtual instruction, nothing can measure up to the in-person experience Dominican provides for its students on a daily basis. As a result, the task of the summer became determining best practices, guidelines and protocols to ensure a safe setting for everyone in the building, while preserving an environment conducive to learning. After a tireless effort from Dominican’s administration and constant communication and guidance from the North Shore Health Department, the Return to School Plan was created and published in August. The plan is an eight-page document outlining Dominican’s health and safety protocols and potential responses to several possible situations.

Students complete a health screening each morning before school

“We heard over and over again, from our students, from our faculty, from our parents, that Dominican is best when we get to be together,” Dominican Principal Ed Foy said. “Something special happens when the Dominican community is together in these classrooms and these hallways.”

Dominican Honor Roll of Donors

Dominican’s Board of Directors approved moving forward with in-person instruction five days a week beginning August 19, 2020. And while students would be returning to the building for school for the first time since March, things were going to look different. As a part of the Return to School Plan, health and safety precautions were taken throughout the building. Stairways are up or down only. Masks are required for everyone in the building. Seating charts are followed for each class and lunch periods. Teachers sanitize their desks between each class. There is a “coach’s box” in each classroom to keep teachers in the front of the classroom and distanced from students. All desks are separated by six feet in Jim Fisher, Director of Maintenance, with the each classroom. Plexiglass Electrostatic Sprayer used to disinfect lockers. dividers sit on teacher’s desks and other tables throughout the school. Maintenance staff increased cleanings throughout the school. Through all of this change, one thing has remained constant: the unwavering effort of Dominican’s faculty and staff to provide an education essential to each student’s success. It has been an adjustment for all educators teaching in the time of COVID. Dominican’s teachers are tasked with managing their in-person students along with their virtual students. Students and their families were given the choice to return to in-person schooling or opt for virtual instruction. Twenty-one students opted for fulltime virtual instruction and other students are required to participate in virtual instruction while they complete a quarantine or await test results.

This year Dominican adopted the learning management system Schoology which allows teachers to upload lessons, assignments, quizzes and other materials onto the online platform. This allows for in-person and virtual students alike to access their coursework from anywhere. Along with Schoology, teachers have integrated video platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams into their lessons to keep everyone involved. Each teacher was also supplied with an iPad to allow them to record their classes and upload them to Schoology. Needless to say, Dominican’s teachers have gone to endless lengths to provide quality instruction for their students. “Dominican’s teachers have been true community heroes during this pandemic. Over and over again our awesome team has overcome new and unprecedented challenges,” Principal Foy said. “With dedication, creativity and a love for teaching, our staff has found a way to meet the needs of our students. Whether it was redesigning curriculum to work in a virtual landscape or reaching out to an anxious student struggling during a family quarantine, our staff’s love and dedication for our students has been inspiring. We are blessed to have this amazing and talented team of educators working together to support Dominican students.”

Dominican’s teachers have been true community heroes during this pandemic. -Principal Edward Foy

Efforts have been taken to alleviate some of the load from teachers throughout the year. Additional professional development time has been added to the schedule. A majority of the subbing and morning health checks has been taken over by the administrative staff. Intermittent gifts of thanks from the Board of Directors, Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters and parent community have been given to the faculty and staff. Nothing can equate to the time, effort and love put in by each and every one of Dominican’s employees. Dominican is truly blessed with a faculty and staff that day after day carries out the mission of Dominican High School and the Sinsinawa Dominicans. In these times of uncertainty, words of gratitude can make all the difference in a person’s life. So, we ask you to reach out to a member of the faculty and staff. If there is someone who has made a difference in your life, your child’s life or you know they are going above and beyond, let them know how you feel. Contact information for Dominican’s faculty and staff can be found at dominicanhighschool.com/faculty-staff. Dominican would not be the incredible place that it is without the undying support of its faculty and staff, parents, alumni and community and it is forever grateful for the efforts of the teaching staff.

We support Dominican because Dominican supports each student and finds what each student needs to succeed and thrive. By offering academic challenges, or perhaps a financial assist, by giving an emotional lift or encouragement to participate – Dominican offers students a wealth of opportunities in academics, social settings, sports and extracurriculars. legacy Society

DOMINICAN

How can you give a gift that lasts forever? The pandemic crisis has impacted our entire community. This won’t be our last storm to weather and serves as a stark reminder that Dominican’s endowment fund is an important factor in our ability to endure. An organization with a strong endowment is simply more financially stable. Making a gift to Dominican’s Endowment Fund is a way to give a lasting gift that can endure. Your endowment contribution is invested to grow the principal and provides additional income for future use. Dominican typically withdraws 3-5% from its endowment to fund scholarships which means a gift in the present keeps giving in the future.

Join the Dominican Legacy Society If you’ve named Dominican in your estate plan, or you’ve discussed Dominican as a charity of choice, let us know so we can recognize you as a Dominican Legacy Society member. It’s easy to benefit Dominican through a gift to be made in the future: • Include Dominican in your will or trust as a beneficiary to receive a specific dollar amount, percentage, or residual balance of your estate. • Name Dominican as a beneficiary of retirement assets like an IRA or 401(k). • Make a gift of life insurance, including transferring ownership of a policy or naming Dominican as a beneficiary on the policy. The material presented here is not offered as legal or tax advice. For guidance or assistance, seek the services of a professional advisor. If you’d like to make a gift to Dominican, or to start a conversation on ways you can make an impact, please contact Director of Advancement, Claudia Martin: cmartin@dominicanhighschool.com or 414.332.1170 x 177

FROM DOMINICAN’S AWARD-WINNING THEATRE DEPARTMENT... Dominican is proud to present its winter musical, Disney’s Descendants: The Musical. Based on the popular Disney Channel Original Movies, Disney’s Descendants: The Musical is a brand-new musical comedy featuring the beloved characters and hit songs from the films! Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos – the children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella De Vil, and Jafar – are welcomed to Auradon Prep to attend school with the children of their parents’ sworn enemies. Now entering a completely foreign world and way of life, the four Villain Kids have a difficult choice to make: should they follow in their parents’ wicked footsteps or learn to be good? Dominican is committed to keeping its wonderful tradition of musicals alive in a safe and responsible way this winter. Performances run February 19-28, 2021! Fall 2020
