LA TE NT IN T HE F L AX Masters Research 3.

This research thesis looks at the potential to use computational tools and methods in association with Maori knowledge (mātauranga māori). It explores traditional weaving techniques and patterns as a means of understanding how weaving and woven structures (Hinaki etc.) Can influence architectural topological forms, by incorporating systems such as structure, aperture, fenestration, and construction directly into the geometry of the design.

2. 4.

This thesis initiates an investigation into a pavilion for the people of Te Arawa at the Māori Institute of Arts and Crafts. The design is amalgamated into a rich cultural territory connected to the narratives of the past, present and questions the future of indigenous design.

5.

A series of design iterations and materials studies both in analogue and digital formats will contribute to the large scale prototyping and fabrication of non-linear self-supporting structures. The work will be supported by optimisation software (Rhinoceros & Grasshopper/ Galapagos, Silvereye and Opossum) for finite element analysis (FEA) and formal optimisation. Both subtractive (CNC Milling) and additive (3d printing) manufacturing methods will be used to explore material effects and performance.

6.

In summary, this research explores the potential for indigenous development, cultural empowerment and innovation. As part of SITUA it combines the potential of academia and indigenous groups to foster new knowledge through the exploration of emergent materials and building systems located within specific tribal domain. THE OLD, THE NEW AND THE GROTESQUE Focusing on the intent to examine the historic grid morphology of Rome and to produce from it an unexpected experience and emblem for the city. The historic grid layout of Historic Rome captures pedestrians in a labyrinth of hard edged buildings with solid facades until the reach courtyards or large public space which are immersed in light. This project looks at focusing on the properties edge and courtyard spaces. A series of initial studies were made to extract lines that make up of the courtyard contours. These existing contours of the city are broken apart, redrawn and fused together to produce are imagined shape for the building. A figure ground study of the city revealed how light is capitalized on through inner courtyards and how the buildings have a strong presence along the street and property edge. By looking at the ontology of these arrangements these objects have begun to be broken down and built back up and applied to site to create a new spatial experiences based on different conditions around context, Environmental controls look at creating a kinetic facade which breathes with the a climate temperature changes to stimulate and regulate the internal temperature of the building to keep it well ventilated.

Matrix 7:

North

From the investigation a new catalogue of figures have been generated to potential create volumetric forms to influence the formal investigation of the design itself. This development have the potential to inform and influence all aspects of the building from the landscape to the interior

This project was done within a group project where we were asked to design and cost a building for a client. Our client was a musician, with a small family who were looking at taking advantage of there corner site opportunity in Rongotai, Wellington.

The majority of the budget was spent on the Drawing: natural lighting facade as it has significant Dom Sheet Lightbox benefits, thermal insulation maximized in comparison with traditional glazing especially being on the southern face, and the solar and heating advantages through the use Address: 27 Resolution Street of white polycarbonate sheets. Drawn Scale:

Lyall Bay Wellington

As indicated

1 A006 1

My role in this project was in the programmatic scheme of the design, while the other architect worked on the form. The circulation of the building revolves around the prominent polycarbonate facade which helps to maximize the amount of filtered daylight which enters the communal spaces. The arrangement of programs are defined in terms of layers ranging from public communal spaces (Lounge, Kitchen and Dining) toward the more private spaces of the bedrooms and bathrooms. A long promenade connects the main dwelling to the music library and the music room.

The Narrative: The Legend of Ngake and Whataitai

In an effort to promote a better understanding of earthquakes in New Zealand, to alert and prepare the public for catastrophic disasters, and in memorial of the losses caused by earthquakes in the country. This project took precedents from the historic narrative of Ngake and Whataitai, illustrated into a picture book around 8 key moments and then translated into the formal and programmatic development of the building Narrative: The Legend of Ngake and Whataitai The Narrative: The Legend ofThe Ngake and Whataitai

Newtown is a culturally diverse place, which has successfully cemented its vibrant nature into the greater context of Wellington. The annual festival held at the start of every year is a performance of the colourful personalities which make the suburb the place it is. From the context and research analysis the festival presented an opportunity to lend itself to influencing a new proposed architecture, which helps to contribute to the community.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

4TH YEAR CONSTRUCTION

01 A201

02 A202

The construction of the building is intended to reflect the natural environment of the hillside, this is down through the use of the LVL beams and columns for the buildings shell. Polished concrete floors provide an element of the Wellington shoreline. The Material used have focussed on the speed of construction time and the overall lifespan of each component as the site is open to the environment perched close to the harbour. The natural timbers are contrasted against steel elements which are recessed at junction to create the appearance of a floating structure. Through the middle of the building is a 15m tall gantry which could be considered an urban playground. The structure is incredibly rigid and the top beams are supporting the function of the space as the floors, and stairs are hung from the top of the structure. Between these two moments, a parametric structure emerges from the ground and twists and turns to the roof. This structure is yet again hung from the beams to prevent the structure failing in lateral movement.
