On September 1, 2007, the BIG EAST Conference launched its state-of-the-art Web site, which is now managed by NeuLion/JumpTV Sports. The site retained the conference’s familiar web address – www.bigeast.org – and continues to be an excellent source for the latest news and stories on happenings around the BIG EAST. This site is also a reliable source for new extensive video coverage on BIGEAST.tv, the online home for live and on-demand streaming video, including live games and highlights from select tv games. Up-to-the-minute standings, along with team-by-team and composite results are also updated at the conclusion of each game. National polls, weekly award winners and team notebooks are updated regularly. The Media Guide, along with an in-depth Records & History Section, is located on each sport’s page. Logos for every BIG EAST team and the conference marks can also be accessed. (Credit “The BIG EAST Conference” with each photo use). The BIG EAST Web site will continue to be the exclusive home for women’s lacrosse “Championship Central,” which is a one-stop shop for conference tournament live stats, blogs, results, box scores, recaps, photo galleries, video highlights and more.

BIG EAST W o m e n ’ s L a c r o sse N o teb o o k WELCOME TO THE LEAGUE – On June 11, 2008, Villanova announced it would join the BIG EAST in women’s lacrosse. The women’s lacrosse program at Villanova began competition in 1990 and competed as a Division I independent in each of the last three seasons (2007, 2008 and 2009). The Wildcats were an associate member of the Patriot League from 1999-2006.

NOTRE DAME COMING OFF FIRST BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP The Irish set a single-season school record with 16 wins last season and made their fifth NCAA Championship appearance in the last eight years. It was their first time appearing in back-to-back tournaments. At the end of April, Notre Dame captured its first BIG EAST Tournament championship.

THREE TEAMS FOR NCAAs – For the second consecutive year, the BIG EAST Conference tied a league record as three women’s lacrosse teams were selected to compete in the 16-team NCAA Division I Championship. Georgetown, Notre Dame and Syracuse all earned berths marking the third time overall the BIG EAST has had three teams selected. The feat also was accomplished in 2008 and 2002.

SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS – In 2008, Syracuse senior Katie Rowan made her mark in the NCAA single-season scoring records. Having finished with 142 points in 2008, she totaled the secondhighest single-season mark in NCAA history. Rowan’s total was just six points shy of the all-time record set by Jen Adams in 2001. Below is where Rowan finished on the NCAA’s all-time list. Adams is the head coach at BIG EAST rival Loyola. NCAA Division I Career Points Leaders 1. Jen Adams (Maryland, 1998-01) 455 2. Karen Emas (Delaware, 1982-84) 420 3. Katie Rowan (Syracuse, 2006-09) 396 4. Mary Key (Johns Hopkins, 2004-07) 383 5. Marsha Florio (Penn State, 1982-85) 380

Notre Dame won the 2009 BIG EAST Tournament championship for the first time in the three-year history of the event and earned the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. As a league, the BIG EAST has seen a team advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship each year since 2001. The BIG EAST went 50-30 (.625) during nonconference play last year to mark its highest win percentage over the last three years. The BIG EAST held a .535 mark in 2008 and a .597 record in 2007.

PREVIEW

• Entering its third season, Cincinnati looks to build on its success after an improved season in 2009. Last season, the Bearcats began with a three-game win streak and ended the season on a two-game win streak. • Lellie Swords returns for her third season and will guide UC in its second season as a fully-affiliated member of the BIG EAST Conference. The Bearcats seek their first BIG EAST win and will look to sophomore Laura Simanski, who led the team last season with 52 points, 47 goals and 92 shots, for an offensive punch. • Juniors Natalie Starvaggi and Lynsey Burton will contribute to UC’s offense as Starvaggi had 16 goals and Burton scored 18 goals last year.

PREVIEW

• UConn boasts a blend of youth and experience with 15 returners welcoming the addition of 16 newcomers. It will be head coach Angela McMahon’s second season at the helm of the program and the team will be led by the attacking sophomore duo of M.E. Lapham and Kiersten Tupper. • Defensively, expect great things from junior defender Jessica Mucci, who will headline a relatively young defense searching for a starter in the cage. • A challenging nonconference schedule is ahead of the Huskies this year. • McMahon believes the lessons learned a season ago and a strong fall season will enable this team to reach new heights in 2010.

PREVIEW

• Georgetown returns a veteran attack and midfield including all-American seniors Molly Ford and Ashby Kaestner. Seven of the top eight scorers from last year will return. • The trio of Ford, Kaestner and junior Jordy Kirr is expected to move into the top five in a number of scoring records. • On defense, senior goalkeeper Caitlin Formby will need to be a vocal leader after losing Jordan Trautman, Bridget Noon and Katie Burton due to graduation. • Georgetown’s style of play should continue to be fast-paced. • The schedule includes traditional powers Northwestern, Maryland, Duke, North Carolina, Princeton and Johns Hopkins.

PREVIEW

• Head coach Tracy Coyne, the only coach in the history of the Notre Dame women’s lacrosse program, begins her 14th season with the Irish. Coyne and her squad captured their first BIG EAST title in 2009. • Notre Dame returns 16 players from its 2009 team that won a school-record 16 games on the way to the BIG EAST Championship and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Irish have been to the NCAA Championship five times in the program’s history (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009) and will be looking to go for the third consecutive year in 2010, something they have never done. • Second team IWLCA all-American attack standout Gina Scioscia is the team’s top returning scorer. She had career highs in 2009 with 53 goals and 43 assists.

PREVIEW

• Villanova returns six starters from an eight-win squad that finished on a high note in its final season as an independent. Villanova won seven of its final nine games to finish at .500 for the first time since Jebb Chagan took the head coaching position following a one-win campaign in 2005. • Senior midfielder Erica Rybinski is among the more notable returnees. She bounced back after missing the entire 2008 campaign with a knee injury to finish second on the Wildcats in scoring with 31 goals, 24 assists and 55 points. • Junior Maggie Langan has carried the bulk of the workload in goal for Villanova in her first two seasons. Last year, she made 128 saves and won eight games. • Villanova begins its first year of BIG EAST play this spring. The Wildcats went 8-8 last year and faced two BIG EAST opponents (Louisville and Cincinnati).
