Tips for College Freshmen If you are currently a college freshman, your first semester is coming to a close and you are likely in the middle of your first round of finals. Once the stress of finals week is over, you have a chance to take a look back on the semester and start planning how to make the next one better. While there is no way to ever guarantee a perfect semester, there are a few things you can do that will make your experience memorable and successful. Call them hacks, tips, or trade secrets, turning these tricks into habits will lay a foundation for success in school, your career, and in life.

Organization A person who struggles to stay organized will ultimately struggle to succeed. Each day, week, month, and semester should be organized so that you have time to study, work, play, eat right, and get enough sleep. Keep these aspects of your life balanced and organized, and you’ll be on the right track. On the same note, make sure that your school notes, study materials, and other things that you need for school stay nice and neat as well. You don’t want to be scrambling to find an assignment at the last minute or searching through your hard drive for a paper that you know you wrote, but just can’t seem to locate.

Education First things first. Go to class and get to know your professors. You never know when you’ll be given a pop quiz, extra credit, or important information for your final. Professors know which students are invested in their education and they are much more likely to work with a student whom they know by name than one who is popping up last minute to beg for extra time or extra credit. If you don’t have one already, find a mentor or two. Mentors are a priceless resource for guidance, advice, and can even provide help on things unrelated to your education. A good mentor will be a trusted guide through your school career, a friend for life, and they can help introduce you into the professional world once your education is complete.

Explore, Engage, and Experiment College is all about getting to know yourself and the world around you. Take time to step outside your studies and the bubble that is campus. Explore the town that you’re in and find its hidden treasures, for every town has them. Get to know other students, faculty, staff, and community members who are outside your major. Some of these acquaintances can result in life long friendships and professional collaborations.

Don’t forget to have fun. While you should remember that you are spending thousands of dollars on an education, you should also remember that you are also in the middle of a series of events that will forever shape who you become. Live in the moment, be spontaneous, be a little adventurous, make a few mistakes, and learn. Never stop learning.
