Dealing with Home Sickness Especially during the holiday season when it starts to get cold outside and all you want to do is curl up in a ball with a book and your cat in front of the fireplace, it is easy to get homesick. It can be difficult to overcome when your home and family are far away and you do not get to see them that often. Here are a few ways that can help you overcome your homesickness.
Stay in Touch With the technology that exists today, you can stay in touch with family easily. Whether it is through the occasional text message, email or phone call you can let your family know that you are thinking of them. Unfortunately you cannot communicate with home pets this way but you can use Google Hangout or Skype to video chat and see your family and pets that way.
Get Involved As hard as it is to move on from the past, it is important to at least start to try and distract yourself from it. Once you meet new people and make friends your focus will change from the past to the present. You can join local community clubs and organizations to participate in service activities that will help you take your mind off yourself and what you miss and remind you of what in your life you are thankful for.
Plan Ahead As important as it is to take your mind off of home, it is also important not to forget it. Sometimes the best way to make yourself feel better about being away from home is planning the next time you are going to go back. Budget how much money you have and how much you will need for travel costs. Schedule your future plans ahead of time in order to save time for a trip home. Organize to meet family and friends that will also be in town. Having something like this to look forward to gives you hope and allows you to relax until the time comes to go home.
Find a Hobby Getting involved in the community and making new friends can be easier said than done. If you are having trouble doing that or just find extra time on your hands, find a hobby to distract yourself. This can be anything from crocheting to playing video games. As long as you are able to budget your time wisely and not be distracted by your studies, these study breaks can be beneficial. Your brain needs to take a rest while studying, anyway. It doesn’t matter if you are studying Business Administration, Accounting, Property Management, Event Planning, New Media Marketing, or Programming; we are all eventually susceptible to the pangs of home sickness. Everyone
deals with it in different ways but what is important to remember is that it is possible to overcome. Once you are able to find your place in your new surroundings, you will not have the same feeling of home sickness you had before. Photo Credit: ratnesh , brokenarts
