Discovering Technology While Fishing Every stream and every lake, every babbling brook and raging river, hold within them one fish. Just one fish that is so massive, fat, girthy and scarred by past anglers lures and flies that they receive a nameWilbur or Jaws for whatever reason being the most common- but it is given to them by the fishermen that have seen their colossal flash in the water. The pursuit of these fish worthy of a name drives me every summer to the banks of rivers. This year found me on a small tributary of the Clearwater River in Idaho hunting again with my fly rod for a fish with a name.
Pursuing a College Degree Needn’t be an Epiphany I was eating lunch on the far bank under the shadow of a pack bridge beneath Castle Rock when the realization struck me. I can fish but what will that get me in life? Epiphanies have a way of slowing the body but accelerating the mind so while my mouth stalled on gnawing at crackers and cheese my mind sped into thought. I have no formal training in technology only what I’ve picked up by necessity in school; I have no working knowledge of the outstanding capabilities of modern technology; and especially most of all I don’t know what kind of jobs or careers I can hope to get without at least a general understanding of recent and up to date technology. The reality check at my own deficiencies startled me. A bachelor’s degree in the modern world is not what it used to be and even worse is a degree like the one I am pursing that includes in it no education into the competitive and fast paced private sector of business administration, which is completely and wholly centered on the capabilities offered by technology. But not just modern businesses rely on technology, every industry from construction and fabrication to healthcare administration and medicine are advancing with and trusting completely upon the backs of tech savvy individuals who have been professionally trained to become so.
How Fishing Relates to Success in College I finished my river side lunch and suited up for a round of afternoon fishing. In fishing, as in life, specific techniques and strategies can be used to ensure success.
When a fishermen’s fly floats downstream it is imperative that the presentation of the fly is perfect as to mimic the way a real fly would harmlessly drift and in that way entice a strike from a curious fish. As my hopper fly did so down the cool clear ripples my mind again turned to my future life and the parallels that could be drawn from a well presented fly to that of a well presented resume. To lure in and even snag prospective employers my resume must present in it somewhere my experience or, maybe more importantly, my education in a technological field. It was decided then. If I were ever to be more than a fishing bum I would need training in technology. Anything would do, really. And with the vast array of fields of study out there and the even more numerous applications of those studies, I would have to become proficient in at least one technological field, such as health science, if I wanted to achieve the career and financial goals I had set for myself.
