How to Land an IT Job Certainly a degree will help you on your way to obtaining a career in Information Technology, but there are additional ways to pump up your resume that will certifiably get you the position that you have been dreaming of. “If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you’d have invented Facebook.” A classic line from the film entitled ‘The Social Network,’ about the life of Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg soon after he created it. Although he may not have actually said those words in real life, the principle is the same. If you want to be credited for creating something new, different, and absolutely unique, you have to just make it. It shows the people looking at your resume that you are everything they have been looking for. Not only do you have the ingenuity and originality necessary to create something new, but you also have the guts and the initiative to do it. Therefore proving that you are capable of doing it again, hopefully for their benefit. It also gives yourself experience, if you have yet to be given the opportunity.

Resume Your resume and portfolio are very important. It is the only thing that will give your potential employers an impression of who you are before they consider you for an interview. They will not even read overly long resumes, so keep it short and to the point. Focus on your achievements and cut out anything too vague. Use anything quantifiable and recommendations also work well. Do not forget to put this resume and portfolio online – the place employers will turn to first when looking for an Information Technology person to hire.

Practice Good Public Relations A lot of getting a good IT job goes along the same lines as getting any job at all. People want to hire the people that they like. Going into an interview, have answers prepared for any potential question, and specifically think of stories that you can apply to the position you are applying for. Do not deny any mistakes, as it looks like you are lying or covering something up. They do not want to just hire someone that is perfect, but someone that has proven to learn from their past mistakes. Obviously, dress well and stay professional. If you know anyone within the company at all, even if it is in an unrelated field, be sure that they know you are applying, and be sure that they are someone that likes you. Any words said for or

against you by an already hired and respected colleague can make or break the decision to hire you. There are also those of you looking for the opportunity to build your resume, or possibly to receive your degree. You can do this through InfoCenter, stationed in Kuwait. We offer anything from IT training, Microsoft certification, Oracle courses, Cisco certification, and more. It is a sure way to land yourself an IT job down the road and give you the experience you need for your resume. Photo Credit: mst_b , Ambrozjo
