Why You Should Choose a Major You Love Money or Love? That is the question all college students tend to ask themselves when picking a major. Only a fortunate few actually love what will give them a good income. So – back to the question most students end up asking themselves - money or love? We are pulling for love here. And this is why:
Happiness The most obvious reason you should choose a major you love is your happiness. Your major will determine the classes you take for the next four or five years. That means all the assignments, textbooks, quizzes, and tests you will face will center around that topic. You may even dream about it. Who knows! If you want to actually enjoy your college life, you’ll want to do something that interests you – something that makes you happy. Finally, if your degree actually leads to what you will do for the rest of your life, the rest of your life’s happiness may be founded upon this decision. A note to the worried: If you are seriously stressing out about this decision, stop it. Very few people actually end up in careers directly related to their major. If you end up with a major you don’t like or if you change your mind a little too late to change it, your future happiness is not lost!
Quality Work It’s a known fact that most people work harder and produce higher quality results when they are doing something they are interested in. Memory retention increases, understanding comes easier, and actual learning will take place. If you are worried about your self-discipline (especially when it comes to study and homework) you had better pick a major that you love. If you need to keep an academic scholarship or graduate with a respectable GPA, choosing a major that you love will help you stay focused and working hard.
Good Money in Every Field A lot of people cheat themselves out of their ideal life by convincing themselves that there is no way they can make good money doing what they love. While in some cases this could be true, who’s to say that you won’t make good money? There are professionals in EVERY field (from Graphic Arts to Archaeology) that get paid well. If you are truly dedicated to doing what you love and are capable of doing it very well, there is a good chance that you can make good money doing what you love.
A Compromise As great as following your heart is, the other side of this argument has some undeniably valid points. It is true that money will be very important in your life. If you are positive that your chosen love will not provide you and your family with the financial support it needs, it’s ok to compromise. Double major in something more practical (as long as you are at least vaguely interested) and keep your love as a side business or hobby. No matter what you choose, make sure you are comfortable with your decision. As long as your heart and mind are at peace, you’ll do just fine! Photo Credit: eduspiral, latin-american-diversity
