Influential Web Designers – Douglas Bowman It is amazing to think how far things have come in even the past 15 years related to web design. Literally every day the technology and methodologies of web design are changing and advancing. It can make it hard to keep everything straight. There are so many acronyms and terms that mean so many different things and the way websites are built and presented can be a bit confusing. All of this advancement is good because the goal behind it is to present the most relevant information in the easiest way possible. We really owe it to the people who have dedicated their careers to finding and creating new ways to serve up excellent design and user experiences. These people don’t rest on the status quo, but strive to push technology along every day. They constantly strive to come up with both new and innovative ways to deliver good information quickly and easily to all of our devices. They also recognize how important good design is to help present information in a fun and pleasing way. These professional truly are forward thinkers who should be lauded for their accomplishments and what they have provided to all of us in terms of how we receive and consume our information.
Douglas Bowman Douglas Bowman is an influential designer who has innovated with his creations and is recognized as a leader in modern web design. In 2002, he left a long career at Wired so he could focus on a small consulting firm he started in San Francisco called Stopdesign. At Stopdesign, he built websites and applications for companies like Google, Blogger, Capgemini, Adaptive Path, Cathay Pacific Airways and Mighty Goods. In 2006, joined Google as Visual Design Lead, putting his work at StopDesign on hold. In 2009, he left Google to join Twitter as their Creative Director, where he leads the design teams. Stopdesign is still his creative outlet. He is extremely passionate about design, typography and the media. Stopdesign is a collection of writing, creative thinking and work that represents the problem solving, simple solutions, and costeffective results he has delivered for clients and readers throughout the world.
Bowman’s philosophy when it comes to design is that it has a major role in how a message is understood. He believes that design is what creates an impression with a website visitor. It can create interest and encourage closer examination. The goal of good design is to engage visitors and capture their attention. Conversely, a poor design does not really have a chance at hitting the target. In the day we live in, we have become accustomed to filtering out irrelevant information and bad design quickly. Good design does not impede delivery or cause complications, instead it should make it easy for a website visitor to easily and enjoyably digest the intended message.
