Learning to Focus as a Surgical Technician A surgical technologist moves from surgery to surgery just the same as a student moves from class to class. They are required to assist in any number of tasks for the doctor and each procedure offers a new challenge for the tech.

Working Hard Full-time workers are at the office for anywhere between eight to twelve hours a day. They stand up most of that time and work on call. The thing that can make the job a challenge is staying alert and attentive. Every job has that hour or so where you would rather sleep than work another minute, becoming a surgical tech is no exception to that rule. He can get just as tired as you do at the office. The only difference between you and him though is that someone’s life is on the line here. The doctor can ask a surgical technician to do something right away and he must be alert and ready to respond immediately. He must not only know what he is doing, but he must know how to do it quickly.

Focus Learned Not every surgical technician is born with that focus. In fact, most of them had to learn it over time. Their time spent at school has helped them do that. These tips will help you learn to focus your attention while you go back to school for a surgical technician degree. Use a to-do list. Every night, before you go to bed, write down the things you need to get done the next day. Make a list of things to accomplish and find times to fit everything in. When the morning comes, get down to work on that schedule.

Moving Past Your Limits There will be times that you are tired and not excited for a coming activity, but you will need to work through

that. A main part of this training is learning to overcome those feelings of unfocused exhaustion. Learn to push through those tired moments and focus on the task at hand. The more you learn to do this, the easier it will become over time. Not only will this help you learn to focus your attention, it will help you become significantly more productive during the day. A focused, productive individual that can get things done is an employee every company would love to hire. When you master getting a to-do list written, learn to sort it. Sort it by difficulty or priority.

Getting Your System Down Find a system that works for you and master identifying what should be done in what order. This will help you focus on getting the procedures down in an operation. Get ahead of your schedule. Whenever possible, try to get ahead on all of your assignments. Spread your projects out over a month or two as opposed to overnight. Take time to think about them and do them properly. This extra time will relieve you of stress and teach you how to manage your time efficiently. This will help you in the operating room and outside of it as well. Remove distractions. Turn off your favorite social media site, leave your phone in the other room and don’t go near the television. Focus your attention by removing distractions. You’ll find it a lot easier of a task.
