Ten skills to master in order to be a top accountant in today’s business world Accounting is a very competitive career to enter now days as more and more students are entering the market with a college degree in accounting. Although a degree can get you far it takes a lot more than that in order to be competitive in this field than just a degree.

Math and Details First— it takes a good amount of mathematical knowledge. Having a strong background in basic math such as percentages, division, multiplication, and algebra will get you ahead fast. It is important to note that an actual enjoyment of math is pretty standard for most accountants. This will be your job and it will take a lot out of you if you don’t love what you do. Second—Attention to details will help you apply your math skills in a more problem solving environment, which is what accounting is all about. If you are good at seeing the little details and finding discrepancies in documents then you will soar above the competition. A strong attention to details gives your employers a feeling of security and will provide you with opportunities to progress. It is the bases for becoming a real “authority” in your area.

Research and Presentation of Information Third—Memorization is as crucial in this job as it is in Law. You need to be able to pull formulas and concepts out of your head in seconds. As an accountant you don’t have time to search through hundreds of accounting books each time you get a new problem to solve. It is best to remember what you read and apply it as much as possible so you don’t forget. Fourth— Research is a major part of accounting even if you are good at memorizing. Accountants run into number problems and new tax laws all of the time. It is important for them to stay conversant in the accounting lingo and knowledge. There are new projects that companies put accountants on all of the time so be ready for change. Fifth— Presentation may not seem like a necessary skill as our view of most accountants is an individual who is in the office not working with people that much, but it is important to know how to present material you work on in a coherent manner. Many struggle to simplify and clarify concepts for people who are otherwise illiterate to the world of accounting.

Sixth—Writing is also important for the same reason that presentation is important. You need to be able to communicate with those around you in a way that helps them understand what is going on with the business around them. Getting your degree in accounting can give you a good start but it really will take a lot more experience and fine tuning in order to make a strong career as an accountant. If you have the skills suggested above with the education you are on the right track for having a successful experience as a true blue-inthe-face accountant. Photo Credit: gokoroko, ilco
