Tips to Improving Your Memory It doesn’t matter if you are going to school or not—having a better memory is a goal that many people have. This can be quite difficult for some people for a variety of reasons such as stress, environment and even diet. For students earning a computer science degree, business administration degree, a business degree or a sales management degree, improving and maintaining a good memory can be one of the most important things to work on. Not just for school, but for life after school.
General Health Improvements One of the most important things a person can do to maintain or improve their memory is to get plenty of sleep each night. This is something that practically everyone struggles with, but being rested can not only make you more alert, it lets your brain spend more time dedicating your day to memory. Because this doesn’t happen when you get less sleep, you end up forgetting minutiae that could potentially be quite important. The second tip is another very basic aspect of daily life: diet. There are several different things that a person can eat in order maintain the best health for their brain, such as eggs, beans, nuts, seeds and other things high in magnesium. Some of those others include avocados and halibut. If one of these things is something you don’t really like, you’re in luck! There is a lot of variety. Now that we have the basics out of the way, we can start to get into more detailed tricks.
Memory Games First, be positive! Studies have shown that someone with a positive attitude has more of a brain chemical that helps with memory. This not only makes your day a whole lot better, but it also helps you by giving you better short-term memory, problem solving skills and decision making skills. When you repeat something—like flashcards—while in a peak short-term memory state like this, then it will be easier to get the information into your long-term memory. Second, use techniques like memory games, flashcards or word games to keep your mind active. Puzzles are another good way to keep your brain working. In a lot of ways, your brain is a lot like a muscle; the more you use it, the stronger it becomes. In order to improve memory, some people prefer to take a more comprehensive approach: they work on memorizing short passages of literature, poetry or any other written material each day. While these
passages don’t have to be very long, you can work to make them longer as you see improvement—and there will be improvement. Above all, the best advice you can get is to not give up, and don’t get discouraged if you don’t see huge improvement in a handful of weeks. Improving your memory isn’t an event, it’s a journey.
