MESSAGE OF THE
RECTOR MAJOR
Pope Francis has invited the Universal Church to be a Church on the move, that is, a Church that goes towards people, a Church set on mission. For our Salesian Family, this project is fully and concretely realized with the Salesian charism shared by the thirty or more branches of our Family.
M
y dear Salesian Family, friends of Don Bosco, readers of the Bulletin, I greet you all with affection. I send you these greetings as if they were a family letter because I feel sincerely and deeply the need to tell and to remember what we are living. The bicentenary celebrations of Don Bosco’s birth continues its joyful unfolding and it reveals itself ever more what it was meant to be, a year of rich grace gifted to us by the Lord. As I pen down these lines, I carry a fresh and life-giving memory of meeting the 24 Salesians of Don Bosco that I had the pleasure of knowing at Valdocco, just a few days ago, to greet them and wish them a safe journey before they will leave in the coming weeks for the most diverse and distant countries of the world and to the place to which their missionary vocation will take them. Likewise, I greeted a group of Daughters of Mary Hep of Christians and collaborators who were readying themselves for the same call. This will be the 146th missionary expedition since the day Don Bosco sent his first missionaries. The joy and enthusiasm of those young Salesians, of our sisters, and of our collaborating brothers, their deep desire to go to those who are waiting for them and share with them their life experience, to offer them the service of their own life, to walk along with the young and the poor – all these touch me deeply and give me great joy.
The whole of Valdocco was alive with enthusiasm and celebration. All this leads me to
reflect of a fundamental dimension of our Salesian Family. In fidelity to our charism we are a religious family with a missionary vocation. From the very beginning, Don Bosco started working toward sending his Salesians and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians to the missions. At the time of his death in 1888, the Salesians sent to America numbered 154 (20 per cent of the whole Salesian Congregation at the time), and Don Bosco himself would knock at the door of many lay people seeking their help to maintain and sustain his missionary work. The whole of Valdocco was alive with joy and enthusiasm, and every time “fresh news” would arrive from America, the place would lit up with emotion and desire to go and accompany
those first missionaries. Today the anthropological, cultural, and theological vision are no longer those of Don Bosco’s times, but the missionary character of our family must be the same. Pope Francis has invited the Universal Church to be a Church on the move, that is, a Church that goes towards people, a Church set on mission. For our Salesian Family, this project is fully and concretely realized with the Salesian charism shared by the thirty or more branches of our Family.
My wonderful dream. As in Don Bosco’s times, also
in our Salesian Family, all the branches with their particular identity and gifts are called to be present and active in the four corners of the world. The number of requests that we receive far outnumber our possibility of being present wherever they call us. It is the same as it was at the time of Don Bosco. However we have a great opportunity. We can commit ourselves to be like him: to give rise to that missionary passion that inflamed and filled with enthusiasm so many young hearts. Experts tell us that ours is no longer an age of “great narratives”. What they really mean to say is that the postmodern era has obliterated from our world the great utopias and the great ideals. However, I for one, believe that those very sociological hypothesis head for failure to the extent that there are no longer people, individuals, institutions or communities that believe that things can be different. And we Salesians do believe that things can be different. Within the context of what I am saying, the fundamental difference for the Salesian Family lies in a dream. A magnificent and wonder-filled dream: That the story and the fruit of this Bicentenary year be a missionary passion that keeps on growing stronger in the next few years. To be religious and lay ...people, we are committed... together to realize again that intense and driving missionary passion that Don Bosco lived. May Don Bosco, in the Bicentenary of his birth, continue to intercede for us all with the Lord!
Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, SDB Rector Major
DON BOSCO’S EDITOR’S NOTE
Living Legacy –The Salesian Family
T Our celebration of the bicentenary of Don Boscoʼs birth offers us a big challenge: to continue his legacy and spirit.
his last issue of the DB200 Commemorative Volume of St. John Bosco Today allows us to look back as a family to what happened during this year of special graces in our Salesian family. From the different events/activities that took place from the time we officially launched Don Bosco’s 200th Birth Anniversary last August 16, 2014 at the Caritas Don Bosco School, Sta. Rosa, Laguna, we were able to experience the gracious love of God in giving us one such marvelous gift: St. John Bosco. With the help of images and some accompanying thoughts and reflections, this March-May 2016 issue will help us cherish the events that took place during this bicentennial year and allow us to be grateful to God for calling us to be members of this BIG SALESIAN FAMILY. Our celebration of the bicentenary of Don Bosco’s birth offers us a big challenge: to continue his legacy and spirit. After all the external affairs now comes the internal affairs. We are called to be more faithful to our vocation and mission in our desire to serve God in Don Bosco’s way – becoming the ‘Don Boscos’ of today especially to the young whom Divine Providence continues to send us. As we thank God for the gift of Don Bosco in our lives as members of the Salesian Family, we hope to take the big challenge of this bicentenary in sharing Don Bosco and the Salesian Spirit to other people we encounter every day. Don Bosco must not die with us. His legacy and spirit must be passed on. As we have received the Salesian spirit then, we must likewise share it with others now. Our warm and sincere thanks to the many people who have helped us in making the commemoration of the 200th birth anniversary of Don Bosco a very meaningful and memorable one. We also congratulate the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians as they celebrate their 60th Foundation Year in our country. VIVA DON BOSCO!!!

June 12, 2015 | A TIME TO PRAY
This celebration actually brings us to meditate on how our own hearts are like that of Christʼs. This love that we express in our relationship with God, in being “mystics of the spirit” that seek Him every day: How does it move us towards God? This love that we express in our fraternal communion, in the way we support one another, in being “prophets of communion”, in the way that we care for each other: How does our love flow to our own brothers, our own confreres? Likewise, this love that we express in our being “servants of the young”, especially to the poor: How does our love move out onto the young people entrusted to us, especially to the poor? Yes, the poor. This is the challenge of the Church to us today: to bring Godʼs love to those who are most in need, especially the poor. And this is precisely our theme for todayʼs reflection as a Province in our Quarterly Recollection. —From the Homily of Fr. “The experience was truly a blessing that I would never forget in my entire life. The days in Turin and Colle were like the most important days of my life as a Bosconian and as a Salesian Educator for those were the times that I truly felt Don Boscoʼs presence. Thank you very much Don Bosco for the many blessings in life. In return for all the blessings that you have given me all through my life as your son, in my own humble and little ways I promise to be LIKE, WITH and for YOU forever. I love you, Don Bosco.” — A personal reflection of Mr. Juan Paolo Melendez, a DBA Pampanga Salesian Educator and a member of the FIN Delegation to the CampoBosco 2015.

TH THE 200 BIRTH ANNIVERSARY August 15, 2015 OF ST. JOHN BOSCO (FIS)
And the great wonder is that not only his memory is alive in the Church. His spirit too is more than alive, thanks to generation after generation of Salesians, Salesian Sisters, Caritas Sisters, Associates of Mary Help of Christians, Cooperators, Volunteers, Damas Salesianas, Alumni and Alumnae of our schools and training centers, and the more than 30 groupmembers of the Salesian Family who lived Don Boscoʼs spirit and continued his mission; who became the Don Boscoʼs of their day. They took to heart Don Boscoʼs challenge to his first Salesians, “I will never die, if you become the Don Boscoʼs of tomorrow.” — From the homily of Bishop Pat Buzon, SDB,DD. of the Diocese of Kabankalan, during the FIS Celebration of DB200 at Lourdes Parish, Cebu.

THE 200TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF ST. JOHN BOSCO (FIN)
How is Don Bosco a gift? I am convinced that ultimately it is because he showed to the youth the way to God, and because he developed this “way to holiness” into a system of education – the Preventive System. The Eucharistic celebration last August 16, 2015 was truly a grateful celebration because of Don Bosco who showed the way to Jesus and to God and developed a system by which even the poorest youth could become saints. — Cleric Juvelan Samia, SDB, Personal Reflection on the theme of this bicentennial celebration, “Don Bosco, God’s Gift to the Young.”
“What is the best gift that you could give to Don Bosco on his birthday? Be Salesians! Be missionaries of Godʼs love to the young.” — His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, addressing directly the youth during his homily in the Holy Mass in honor of St. John Bosco at the Ynares Sports Coliseum.

“CETERA TOLLE” A MUSICALE IN HONOR OF DON BOSCO
The practices started on the Feast of the Visitation and the very first time the cast set foot on Meralco was the Feast of Her Queenship. There was always a candle burning in front of her statue at the back stage. This play was about her motherly concern for the children she loved the most, the poor and abandoned. And the privileged participation of the cast and the staff was their tribute of love and gratitude to her - ʻWalang takasan sa paghihirap dahil ito pala ang magdadala sa atin sa puso ni Hesus at ni Maria. Naiintidihan ko na.ʼ — From the article of Fr. Dennis Paez, SDB., the Director of CETERA TOLLE, for St. John Bosco Today December 2015-February 2016 Issue.

St. John Bosco is remembered as a priest who dedicated his life to the servie of abandoned young people. Driven by firsthand experience of the effects of poverty and lack of opportunity on these lads, he was determined to change their condition. He founded the Salesians whose goal was to continue responding to the needs of the young making of them “good Christians and honest citizens.” —From the news article of Fr. Randy Figuracion, SDB. about the DB200 Exhibit’s Opening in Ayala Center – Cebu City.

St. John Bosco and his works is little known in Mindanao, the second largest and southernmost major island of the Philippines. In Cagayan de Oro specifically, known as the “gateway of northern Mindanao” because of its accessibility and business growth, the salesians are not present. The city is one of the most progressive and competitive cities in the Philippines with a population of more than 600,000 people making it the 10th most populous city of the country. This initiative could be a seed for St. John Bosco to be rooted also in this part of the country. — Fr. SALESIAN FAMILY MARIAN RALLY
As we journey back in time with Don Bosco, we take a look at the significant moments of his life – his family life in Biglione and Becchi and how his upbringing there brought him to make his choices and decisions in Chieri. We will be taken back at the beginning of Don Boscoʼs priestly ministry at the Convitto Ecclesiastico, where Fr. Joseph Cafasso, now St. Joseph Cafasso, trained and guided him in his vocation of laboring for the youth and where he met his first oratorian, Bartholomew Garelli. We will finally be brought to the Pinardi where Don Bosco established the Oratory of St. Francis of Sales, where boys and young men could live and learn a trade and study. In all these moments, we reflect on how Don Bosco had entrusted everything to Mary and how all throughout his life Mary had accompanied him to carry out Godʼs plan. — The whole journey of the Marian Rally in the life of Don Bosco with our Blessed Mother Mary

Mandaluyong City—The Salesian Society of St. John Bosco (PhilippineNorth Province) through its Commission on Social Communications, held its Second Don Bosco Film Festival Awarding Ceremony last January 09, 2016 at the St. Dominic Savio Auditorium in Don Bosco Technical College, Mandaluyong City. The theme for this year’s film festival was: St. John Bosco, to the Poor and Marginalized Youth. In the Spirit of the Year of the Poor and the Year of the Consecrated Life, the theme wanted to express how St. John Bosco continuous to be actively involved in the Church and in Society now as when he was alive two hundred years ago, especially in uplifting the plight of the poor and marginalized youth. There were three major categories: 1-Minute Advertisement, 10-Minute Documentary Film, and 20-Minute Short Film. This festival encourages young people who are inclined in making films to create good stories that are rich in Human, Christian, and Bosconian Values. Kuya Kim Atienza, in his Keynote Address, reminded these young film makers to use their talents in inspiring their viewers in living a life that is rich in values. Six Don Bosco settings joined this year’s festival: Don Bosco Technical Institute (Tarlac), Don Bosco Academy (Pampanga), Don Bosco Technical College (Mandaluyong), Don Bosco Technical Institute (Makati), Don Bosco Youth Center (Tondo), and Don Bosco College (Canlubang). Thanksgiving for the 60 years of Presence of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in the Philippines!
Quezon City, December 2, 2015 — About 15,000 FMA, students, parents, Lay mission partners, MHC Past Pupils, Salesians SDB, friends and benefactors gathered at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City on November 30, 2015 to thank God together for 60 years of FMA sisters presence in the Philippines. The celebration was the climax of a three-year journey for the Provincial Educating Community of FMA-Philippines on the theme “REMEMBERING our roots, EMBRACING our spirituality, RELIVING Don Bosco’s dream and mission today,” which also incorporated the celebration of the bicentenary of Don Bosco’s birth and the Year of Consecrated Life. The solemn Eucharistic celebration,

presided by His Excellency Bishop Patricio Buzon, SDB, DD of Kabankalan, Negros Occidental, began with a symbolic dance, in which a vessel containing soil from Mornese was brought by the “missionary spirit” to the Philippines. Holy Communion was followed by the “Lumina Pandit,” in which the light of the Salesian charism was symbolically passed on to families, to our lay mission partners, to the young people. A 55-member orchestra accompanying the choir made up of FMA, formande and our college students, added to the solemnity of the liturgy. A coffee table book that celebrates our story in the Philippines was launched before the concert. The concert showcased not only the talents

and creative efforts of the members of the Educating Communities, but also the Salesian spirit and spirituality that have grown in them through the years: gratitude for the education they have received from the FMA, the joy of being young people and members of the Educating Community, filial love for Mary, appreciation for our faith and culture, a hope-filled perspective of the future, the family spirit and spontaneity. The Philippine Province of the FMA (Philippines - Papua New Guinea) has 148 members and 4 novices (Elenco generale, 2015, vol II) with 19 canonical communities, 142 perpetually and 6 temporary professed sisters. — By FMA@60 Celebration
