Westandatthethresholdof Christmas.Howbeautifulis everythingthatChristmas brings.InthewordsofPope BenedictXVI:“Dearfriends, theSolemnityoftheNativity oftheLordwhichweshall soonbecelebratinginvites ustopracticethissame humilityandobedienceof faith ThegloryofGodisnot expressedinthetriumph andpowerofaking,itdoes notshineoutinafamous cityorasumptuouspalace, butmakesitsabodeina virgin’swombandis revealedinthepovertyofa child.Inourlives,too,the almightinessofGodacts withtheforce—oftenin silence oftruthandlove Thusfaithtellsusthatinthe endthedefenselesspower ofthatChildtriumphsover theclamorofworldly powers”(GeneralAudience ofWednesday,December19, 2012).“Inthenightofthe worldletusstillbesurprised andilluminedbythisactof Godwhichistotally unexpected:Godmakes himselfaChild.

Ithinkthatformostofus, preparingforChristmasand Christmastide,withthe season’sdifferentfeastdays andparties,touchesour heartsdeeply Perhaps somepeopledonot understandintheirhearts whatthiswonderfulMystery ofGod'sPresence-Hislove —means,thoughmanydo Thatnotwithstanding, Christmasisalwaysa beautifultimeofhumanity, grace,thedesireforPeace, andhope.

Evenaswestandinthelight andbeautyofChristmas,of theMysteryofthePresence ofGod,we arenotunaware thatwearetrulyliving“a nightoftheworld.”

Wearelivinginatimeofpain, despair,war,deaths

Wecannotignorethewar thatistakingplacein Ukraine.

Wedonotforgetthe thousandsandthousands oflivesthathavebeencut shortasaresultofthesin ofwarandthedeaththat Wedonotignorethat thousandsandthousands ofpeoplearedisplaced inUkraineandthatother hundredsofthousands ofpeoplelivehiddenin subhumanconditions, withoutlightorheat, andwithlittlefood. InadditiontoUkraine,there arecurrently29otherwar andguerrillahotspotsin theworldsufferingthe sameeffectsofdeath anddesolation.

Morethan35,000 murdersoccurannually insomeLatinAmerican nations.

Thenumberofthepoor inEurope(wewho thoughtwewere completelysecure)has increasedbymorethan doublethenumberwhen comparedwithtwoor threeyearsago. Wehavenotmanaged toendworldhunger; instead,ithasincreased. Catastrophicfiresand floods,theresultof climatechangeonour sufferingplanet,warnus withincreasing frequencyandforce Atthemostrecent summitontheclimate, thenationsthatpollute themostwerenoteven present,asiftheproblem hadnothingtodowith them...

Aren’ttheseleadustothe realityofthe“nightof Humanity”?ItisPopeFrancis himselfwhospeakswithout hesitationofathirdworld war,covertinonewayor another.

So,wherecanwefind, discover,andexperiencethe fruitsoftheIncarnationand ofthatfirstChristmasfrom morethan2,000yearsago?

Andwherecanwe experiencetheLifethat comestousfromthe ResurrectionoftheLord?

Dowehaveareasonfor Hope?Ordoesthedark nightkeepusfromfindingit?

Duringthistime, PopeFrancishas returnedoftentothe topicofHope,urgingus tolookatourlifewithnew eyes–especiallynowthat weareundergoingasevere trial–withtheeyesofJesus, “theAuthorofHope.”The certaintythatthedarkness willturnintothelightwill helpusovercomethese difficultdays.Hopeis“a virtuethatnever disappoints:ifyouwait,you willneverbedisappointed” (PopeFrancis) Itisavirtue thatsurprisesevenGod.In oneofhispoems,thegreat FrenchCatholicwriter CharlesPeguyputsthese wordsintoGod’smouth: “ThefaiththatIlovemost, saysGod,isHope...What surprisesMe...isHope.”

CDB Secular Insitute New Professions in the Philippines

CalambaCity,thePhilippines Itwasahappy 8December2022forVolunteerswithDon Bosco(CDB)inthePhilippines.

AmidsttheSolemnityoftheImmaculate Conception,fourCDBmembersmadetheir professionattheDiocesanShrineofMaryHelp ofChristiansinCalambaCity,LagunaProvince. Oneofthevolunteersmadehisfirstprofession, whiletheotherthreerenewedtheirtemporary professionthatday.Thisbringsthenumberof professedCDBsinthePhilippinestofour.

Meanwhile,fourCDBaspirants,togetherwith membersoftheSDBPostNovitiatecommunity, aswellasarepresentativefromtheVolunteers ofDonBosco(VDB),assistedintheceremony Hopefully,theseCDBaspirantsmayeventually professinthecomingyears.

TheMasswascelebratedbyFr Vitaliano Dimaranan,andconcelebratedbyFr.Bobby Roxas(FINdelegatefortheSalesianFamily),Fr. RichieSantos,andFr.EliCruz(Ecclesiastical AssistantfortheCDB)coordinatedtheentire event.

ThedaybeganwithZumba,animatedbythe JuventusYouthGroup.Itwasmeanttowake upandenliventheassemblyfortheEPCMass thatfollowed.

ServiteDominoinLaetitia!DonBoscotookgreat painstoshowhisboysthatgivingoneselfto God(‘darsiaDio’)wasnotincompatiblewith joy Hepointedthisoutintheprayerbook, CompanionofYouth:“This,then,isthepurpose ofthepresentbook:toteachyouhowtoserve Godandtobealwayshappy”Inthis,hewasin agreementwithStPhilipNeriandSt Francisde Saleswhosaid:“Asadsaintisabadsaint.” Andwhatmoretomakeouryoungpeople happythangames,contests,andfood.

Thetraineesweredividedintocolorsandsent outtoplayballgames(basketball,volleyball, sepaktakraw,andbadminton)andboard games(GameoftheGeneral,chessand scrabble).Noprizesweregiven.Itwasallfor fun.

ThesolemntoneoftheEPCMasswassetby aninterpretativedanceperformedby Juventus.Thesong,“MaryDidYouKnow,” servedtoconnecttheImmaculateConception withChristmas.TheprivilegeofMary’s ImmaculateConceptionwasinviewofthe IncarnationofJesus.

TheafternoonwasreservedfortheSpeech Choir.ItwastheculminatingactivityofEnglish. Allthesectionsputinalotoftimeforpractice andforthecostumes.

OrganizedbytheMinistryonMusic&Cultural Affairs(SJBMOMCA),thisyear’sCantata openedwithanovertureofFr Armand Robleza’s“DaratingNa,”andshowcasedthe variousparishchoirssingingworksby Cayabyab,Chan,Althouse,andHändel.

SpecialperformancesofSchubert’s“Ave Maria”bysopranoLeslieAnneAbordo,and “HaveYourselfAMerryLittleChristmas”by baritoneZidYarcia,alsoreceivedapplause fromtheaudience.Thehighlightofthe evening,however,wasthetrioofSalesian priestsFr.RonnieUrbano,Fr.LonxEleosida,and Fr.PatVillasantaleadingthechoirinamajestic renditionoftheChristmasclassic“Munting Sanggol.”

Regardlessofreligion,theParishreachedout tobeonewiththemincelebratingthejoyof Christmas Thiswasmadepossiblewiththe generosityofparishionersandthelogistical supportoftheParishstaff,theCommission onServicesandHumanPromotions(COSHP) andBECleadersoftheCommissiononBasic EcclesialCommunitiesAnimationandNew Evangelization(COMBANE).
