Strenna 2017

Message of the

RECTOR MAJOR

“We are Family! Every Home a School of Life and Love

O

n the 1st of January, 2006, my predecessor Fr. Pascual ChĂĄvez Villanueva, the Rector Major then, introduced the yearly Strenna with a letter entitled: “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years and in favor with God and man.â€? (Lk 2:52) It was an invitation by the Rector Major to renew our commitment to the family, taking up the challenge given by John Paul II to defend life through the family, and on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of Mamma Margaret, mother of St. John Bosco and a true mother to the boys of the Valdocco Oratory. Today, ten years later, I offer the whole Salesian Family around the world this new Strenna which is meant to focus our attention on families in the very diverse situations in which we Ă€ QG RXUVHOYHV 7KH WKHPH KDV EHHQ VXJJHVWHG DQG LW FRXOG QRW be otherwise, by the priority that the Church wants to give to an ever greater and more appropriate ministry for families. In fact, Pope Francis opted to devote two synods to UHĂ HFW RQ WKH IDPLO\ WDNLQJ RII IURP VRPH RI WKH LGHDV WKDW KH had proposed in his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium in 2013. There was the Extraordinary Synod in 2014 and the ordinary one in 2015. After these synods came his Apostolic

Exhortation Amoris Laetitia last March 19, 2016. I believe that this stage in the life of the Church in which we are living demands that we, the Salesian Family of St. John Bosco, give priority to the educative-pastoral care that must be given to families around the Salesian world. As is the case every year, the Strenna is addressed to each and every member and group of the Salesian Family, with the aim of making us more aware of our task and duty WRZDUG IDPLOLHV 7KXV ZH PD\ À QG SUDFWLFDO ZD\V RI FDUU\LQJ out the ministry of accompaniment expected of us.

1.THE THEME OF THE STRENNA

When we say, “We are Family! Every Home A School of Life and Love,â€? we want to declare from the start that each one of us has had the experience of being born into a family, along with the good things and the limitations of every family. We were born into the bosom of a family and DUH DQ HVVHQWLDO SDUW RI D IDPLO\ ZKHUH LGHDOO\ ZH Ă€ QG D school of life and of love. We are convinced that the family is the human experience in which we learn the art of life and of love. JUNE-AUGUST 2017 | ST. JOHN BOSCO TODAY

Moreover, they make explicit reference to ministry in the family and with families. This helps us realize our responsibility as the Salesian Family. It is a responsibility which in practical terms means that we do not turn our gaze in a direction different from that which the universal Church, under the guidance of Pope Francis, is strongly committed. It is a responsibility which demands that we as educators of boys and girls, teenagers and young people, look through “Salesian eyes at the real situation of families nowadays and in all humility offer our contribution.

2. AN INVITATION TO READ THE EXHORTATION AMORIS LAETITIA

We were born into the bosom of a family and are an essential part of a family, where, ideally,we find a school of life and of love. All families throughout the world – while being different – are made up of persons who love each other, speak to and communicate with each other, share with and make VDFULĂ€ FHV IRU HDFK RWKHU ORRN RXW IRU HDFK RWKHU DQG protect each other’s lives. We grew up as persons, normally living in a family, enjoying the warmth of our home, and receiving from our parents our name and the dignity it brings. In the family we H[SHULHQFHG DIIHFWLRQ IRU WKH Ă€ UVW WLPH DQG HQMR\HG WKH sense of “feeling at home.â€? In the family we learned to say “Thank you,â€? and “I am sorry,â€? and to ask for permission. We are well aware that not all children had the good fortune of experiencing this. But taking into account the diversity of contexts and cultures, we can say that most of us have experienced this kind of family life. Someone might ask: “What does this have to do with us, the Salesian Family?â€? It is relevant because this message of OLIH DQG ORYH LV DGGUHVVHG Ă€ UVW RI DOO WR XV WKH 6DOHVLDQ )DPLO\ of Don Bosco. We are well aware of the links that bind us together as a religious family. It is a family made up of thirtyone diverse groups (congregations, institutes of consecrated life, societies of apostolic life, associations of the faithful, and so on), yet our respective Constitutions, Regulations, and Statutes present the family spirit and the family atmosphere as the constitutive element of our being and identity. 4

ST. JOHN BOSCO TODAY | JUNE-AUGUST 2017

I invite you to read calmly and carefully, and with a heart open to dialogue and personal involvement, the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (AL). Strive to discover what the document is offering and requesting from us. Anyone who believes and loves the Church will realize that this Apostolic Exhortation is indeed a gift to the human race and a genuine treasure for spiritual life and ministry. From our awareness of being the Salesian Family, we want to become involved. The Exhortation of Pope Francis is based on the Magisterium of the recent popes, Saint John Paul II and Benedict XVI, and on the two synods of 2014 and 2015, the Ă€ QDO UHSRUWV RI ZKLFK DUH IUHTXHQWO\ TXRWHG ,W WKHUHIRUH VXPV XS WKH &KXUFK¡V UHĂ HFWLRQ RYHU PDQ\ \HDUV EXW DW WKH VDPH time introduces a change of tone, language, and perspective, moving from the canonical level to a more pastoral one.

The Pope himself declares: “We also need to be humble and realistic, acknowledging that at times‌ we have proposed a IDU WRR DEVWUDFW DQG DOPRVW DUWLĂ€ FLDO WKHRORJLFDO LGHDO RI PDUULDJH far removed from the concrete situations and practical possibilities of real families. This excessive idealization, especially when we have failed to inspire trust in God’s grace, has not helped to make marriage more desirable and attractive, but quite the opposite.â€? „

EDITOR’S NOTE

I

nspired by our Strenna 2017 that is dedicated to the family, this June-August 2017 Issue of St. John Bosco Today is dedicated to the family. We feature in this issue the Message of the Rector Major about the Strenna 2017. And inasmuch as our Rector Major encourages every member of the Salesian Family to read, UHĂ HFW DQG DSSUHFLDWH LQ WKHLU OLYHV 3RSH )UDQFLV¡ Apostolic Exhortation ‘Amoris Laetitia’ on family and marriage, this June-August offers us a deeper understanding of this Apostolic Exhortation with the help of Fr. Salvatore Putzu, SDB (page 12-15). Still in the family, we present how members of the Salesian Family, like the Salesian Cooperators (page 16-17) and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (18-20), are active in the family ministry. We truly hope that this issue will allow all our readers to treasure with so much love and care the sacredness of marriage and family as God’s gracious gifts to all. Other features of this issue are the Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Pedro Baquero, SDB, DD, (page 23-25), the FIN Summer Youth-Leaders Camp “CHAMPOREEâ€? (page 30-31), and the MHC CORNER, the latest added permanent feature of St. John Bosco Today beginning this Issue. Lastly, we thank the Lord Jesus for our newly professed SDBs and FMAs, for those who made their Perpetual Profession, for our newly ordained priests, and for the new members of the Salesian Cooperators. We pray for their holy perseverance. VIVA DON BOSCO!!!

Saying grace before and after meals was a custom very dear to St. John Bosco, but which had been discontinued in many families. Once when he was invited by one such family and dinner was announced, he lingered for a moment with one of the children. As they were entering the dining room, he told the youngster: “Now let us say grace. You know why we do that, don’t you?” “No, I don’t,” the child replied. “Well, it’s to show that we are different from animals. They have no intelligence, and thus they don’t know that food is a gift from God. But we do, and for that reason we thank him.” He then said grace while the parents blushed in silence. From then on they never forgot to say grace at every meal. MHC CORNER | MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS IN BATANES

Mary Help of Christians Conquers the Ivathans BY BRO. KARL TOLENTINO

here is no “by chanceâ€? with God. When He wants, it happens even in mysterious ways. Mary, as the humble handmaid of the Lord, sees to it that God’s plan is accomplished. Having said this, I believe that the presence of Mary Help of Christians in Batanes was not something that happened “by chanceâ€? just because I was invited to talk to the young Ivathans, by my former classmate, Fr. Ronald Manabat, the incumbent Parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Basco, Batanes. I believe that Mary has prepared the way for Her to conquer the Ivathans through him. Knowing Fr. Remo Bati, SDB, who spreads the devotion to MHC all over the Philippines, I invited him to come with me to introduce Her to the Ivathans, which he wholeheartedly accepted. As we were preparing our “pilgrimageâ€? to Batanes, we have known that the Bishop of the place, the Parish priest and their guest priest are all great devotees of Mary Help of Christians from their tender years. Bp. Prelate to Batanes, Msgr. Camilo Gregorio, since his aspirantate up to his priesthood, was formed and trained in Mary Help of Christians Seminary in Pangasinan. Fr. Ronald, was with the Salesians in Macao together with his OFW mother since he was ten years old, where he was introduced to know and love Mary Help of Christians; while Fr. Manheim Abellana, a former Salesian priest and the Prelature’s present guest priest, is already well–attuned with this devotion. It was on Feb. 25, 2017 that Fr. Bati and myself attended the Enshrinement of the statue of Mary Help of Christians at the Cathedral with Bp. Gregorio himself presiding the Mass and the procession. The IDLWKIXO Ă€ OOHG WKH FKXUFK ZLWK OLJKWHG FDQGOHV ZKLOH WKH VRQJ ´+HOS RI Christiansâ€? was being sung and Mary’s image was being solemnly carried to Her elegantly prepared throne. (Besides the 5 foot statue, another 3 foot statue and 20 other smaller ones were requested by Fr. Ronald from Fr. Bati so that he may disseminate in all the corners of Batanes the devotion to Mary Help of Christians.) It was an awesome manifestation of faith and love to Mary, Help of Christians, who had conquered the hearts of the Ivathans through the instrumentality of Her 3 Marian devotees, who happened to be together not “by chanceâ€? but by the will of God and Mary’s intervention. „ 10

fter the two synods on the family in 2014 and 2015, people eagerly awaited the Pope’s “Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation” on the hotly debated topic of the family and marriage in our time. The camp of the so-called “conservatives” fervently hoped that Pope Francis would reassure the Catholic world that nothing had changed in the traditional teaching of the Church concerning marriage and the family. When the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation ZDV À QDOO\ SUHVHQWHG WR WKH PHGLD XQGHU WKH title of “Amoris Laetitia,” both camps were partly disappointed. For in Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis does restate the traditional teaching of the Church on the topics of marriage and the family, but also outlines a relatively “new” attitude toward those who are in “irregular situations.” Cardinal Schoenborn, who presented the papal document, offers a balanced and synthetic evaluation of the Exhortation. He stated that Amoris Laetitia contains “No rupture” with the traditional teaching of the Church, but some “true innovations” which, however, are “in line with a comprehensive development of doctrine and in continuity with the teaching of the recent popes.” In adopting this approach, Pope Francis took as guiding principle the example of Jesus who, on the one hand, stated forcefully that he had not come to abolish the law or the prophets (See Mt 5: 17.), but, on the other hand, when faced with concrete cases of people who had “broken the law,” showed mercy and compassion toward them. (See, for example, Jesus’ attitude toward the Samaritan woman, the woman caught in adultery, the woman who kissed his feet in the house of the Pharisee Simon, and Zacchaeus.)

(The Joy Of Love) A BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF AMORIS LAETITIA The Table of Contents gives a quick and clear outline of the Exhortation. One may also read paragraph no. 6 of the document. A little more can be learned through this concise chapter-bychapter outline.

Amoris Laetitia is a monument to God’s plan for the human family, an invitation to a mercy-filled understanding of human frailty, and a presentation of what has to be done to remedy it.

CHAPTER ONE “In the Light of the Wordâ€? (nos. 8—30) After a short Introduction (Just seven paragraphs.), Pope Francis starts off by pointing out the Biblical foundation of the teaching of the Church on the family. From the story of the creation of mankind, we learn of the origin of the human family as the cradle of life and love. But we also learn that *RG¡V Ă DZOHVV SODQ ZDV VHYHUHO\ GLVUXSWHG E\ WKH intervention of the devil who enticed Eve and Adam to ignore the Creator’s instructions and warnings. As a consequence of that tragic misstep, the life of all families and society in general followed “a path of suffering and bloodâ€? (nos. 19—22). But Pope Francis reassures us that all is not lost in God’s original plan for the family. Hence, his positive conclusion: “Begetting and raising children‌ mirrors God’s creative work (no. 29). Every family should look to the Holy Family of Nazareth as the icon to be not only revered, but also imitated. (See no. 30.) CHAPTER TWO “The Experiences and Challenges of Familiesâ€? (nos. 31—57) The second chapter focuses on the situation of the family in our time—a situation characterized E\ PDQ\ FKDOOHQJHV DQG GLIĂ€ FXOWLHV DV EURXJKW RXW JUNE-AUGUST 2017 | ST. by the members of the synods, especially that of 2014. Pope Francis insists on the need for the Church, to pay attention WR WKH GLIĂ€FXOWLHV IDFHG E\ PDQ\ IDPLOLHV DQG WKH FRQFUHWH situations in which they live and make their moral choices. (See no. 36.) Hence, the Church must form consciences, “not to replace themâ€? (no. 37), and to balance the presentation of the ideal as it is etched in God’s law, with an “understanding heartâ€? that takes into account human weakness and “woundedness.â€?

CHAPTER THREE “Looking to Jesus (nos. 58—88) This chapter presents the teaching of the Church about marriage and the family, as outlined in the documents of Vatican II and the writings of Popes Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Against the background of what all families should be, Amoris Laetitia views the various imperfections and shortcomings in many families. Echoing the teaching of St. John Paul II in Familiaris Consortio, Pope Francis points out that the pastors have the duty to exercise sound discernment of complex situations, and the need to avoid negative judgments, for the degree of personal responsibility of the individuals is known to God alone. (See no. 79.)

CHAPTER FIVE “Love Masde Fruitful (nos. 165—98) This chapter describes married love as fruitful, not only in the begetting of children, but also in the adopting of children of parents who are incapable or unwilling to care for them. (See nos. 179—180.) Pope Francis mentions also the readiness to welcome and care for those who constitute the “extended family—relatives, in-laws, and friends. The family’s network of relationships is also seen as a training ground for the integration of the young members in the wider social community. (See nos. 187—193.)

Chapter Six “Some Pastoral Perspectivesâ€? (nos. 199—258) This chapter outlines pastoral initiatives based especially on the reports and “Relationesâ€? of the two synods. It starts by emphasizing the need to proclaim “the Gospel of the Familyâ€? today (See nos. 200—204.), the need for an adequate preparation of engaged couples for marriage (See nos. 205— 216.) DV ZHOO DV RI DFFRPSDQ\LQJ WKHP GXULQJ WKH Ă€UVW \HDUV of married life (See nos. 217—230.). Pope Francis gives special attention to an adequate formation of the clergy to deal with family problems, and the accompaniment of those who have been abandoned by their spouse, or are separated or divorced. But he emphasizes that it is even more important to strengthen all families in order to forestall the occurrence of similar breakdowns in family relationships, as well as to equip them adequately to deal with members with homosexual tendencies and with death in the family. (See no. 250 and nos. 253—58.) CHAPTER FOUR “Love in Marriageâ€? CHAPTER SEVEN “Towards a Better Education of Children (nos. 259—290) This chapter is totally devoted to the education and character formation of children (See nos. 263—267.). Pope Francis is adamant in stating that “What is more important [for the parents] is the ability to lovingly help their children grow in freedom, maturity, overall discipline and real autonomy (no. 260). This demands patient realism (See nos. 271—273.) and the growth in the awareness that family life is a privileged educational setting

(See nos. 274—279). The chapter ends with a very appropriate reminder that the family is the best natural setting where the faith is handed on to the new generations, and in which “education in the faith is carried out with due attention to the development stages of the children and youth (See no. 288.), and the family becomes an “agent of pastoral activity (no. 200).

CHAPTER EIGHT “Accompanying, Discerning and Integrating Weaknessâ€? (nos. 291—312) This chapter focuses on the so-called “irregularâ€? situations—a mild and respectful term which is now used to indicate types of habitual behavior or states of life that were categorized earlier as “sinful.â€? Under the broad category of “irregularâ€? situations fall those of Catholics who live together as husband and wife but are married only civilly or not married at all, those who are divorced and have formed a new family, and those of the same sex who live as husband and wife (See nos. 296—300). But within this broad categorization Pope Francis remarks: “If we consider the immense variety of concrete situations‌ it is understandable that neither the Synod nor this Exhortation could be expected to provide a new set of general rules‌ applicable to all casesâ€? (no. 300). The attitude expected of the Church toward these persons is synthesized in the title of the chapter: “Guiding, Discerning, and Integrating Weakness.â€? What these three verbs entail is explained in detail in the course of this strikingly realistic and practical chapter. As regards homosexual behavior, Pope Francis made his own the statement of the synod fathers which read: “As for proposals to place unions between homosexual persons on the same level as marriage, there are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and familyâ€? (no. 251). CHAPTER NINE “The Spirituality of Marriage and the Familyâ€? (nos. 313—325) 7KH ODVW FKDSWHU LV DQRWKHU PDVWHUSLHFH ,W RIIHUV D Ă€WWLQJ conclusion to the Apostolic Exhortation, as it outlines in simple and concrete language the way couples may grow spiritually and help each other to “share in the full life of the Resurrectionâ€? (no. 317). Characteristically, Pope Francis points out that this family spirituality “is made up of thousands of small but real gesturesâ€? (no. 315) — the gestures of which our ordinary life is made, and through which we can experience and communicate to the other members of the family our love and care. The concluding paragraph bears the touch of both realism and optimism: since human families are not perfect, they should constantly strive to improve, with each member doing one’s best and helping the others do the same (See no. 225.). A beautiful prayer to the Holy Family of Nazareth closes the Exhortation—a prayer made of simple sentences and practical requests that correspond to the needs of all ordinary families.

A BRIEF EVALUATION Amoris Laetitia is a beautiful and precious gift of Pope Francis to all families and the entire Catholic &KXUFK ,W LV WKH IUXLW RI KLV SUD\HUIXO UHĂ HFWLRQ RQ WKH “Relationesâ€? of the two synods and of his own personal H[SHULHQFH RI WKH GDLO\ GLIĂ€FXOWLHV HQFRXQWHUHG E\ ordinary families as he knew them in Buenos Aires. However, it is a fact that the Exhortation Amoris Laetitia has not pleased everybody, though it was intended to help everyone through the clarity of its presentation, the simplicity of the style, and the author’s eagerness to enable all families attain the purpose for which God created man and woman. In its content and literary style, this Exhortation is in several ways different from other documents of the Magisterium on marriage and the family, especially the ones issued before Saint John Paul II. These focused mainly on the objective content of Church teachings. Pope Francis, in Amoris Laetitia, shows a special sensitivity and concern for the complex conditions in which couples living in “irregularâ€? Prayerful discernment applies not only to pastors but also to those who are in “irregularâ€? situations. Each one should seek to know God’s will and carry it out as generously as possible and as the concrete situations allow. Amoris Laetitia clearly aims at CONCRETE ACTION, which has to be carried out in the universal &KXUFK ZLWK GXH DWWHQWLRQ WR VSHFLĂ€F VLWXDWLRQV DQG conditions that vary from place to place, and from culture to culture. All Catholics should feel responsible that what Amoris Laetitia advocates becomes actual, for the family is a “common goodâ€? that we are duty-bound to hand on to generations to come. Terrible forces are constantly out to disrupt and destroy the family. We must ACT positively and decisively. Only to the extent that we will succeed in creating and supporting families according to God’s plan, shall we prove that the teaching enshrined in Amoris Laetitia is not a “nice theoryâ€? but an “action planâ€? that is DOABLE—a plan that can and should become a marvelous reality. xequiel ‘Quiel’ de Guzman and Charito ‘Chato’ Lapitan were united in the sacrament of Matrimony thirty years ago at the Mary Help of Christians Parish in Mayapa (Calamba, Laguna). They are blessed with four children: Jonathan, Mary Glosary, Noli, and Jhonel. Both are members of the Association of Salesian Cooperators (ASC), Mayapa Center. Chato made her apostolic promise in March 15, 2009; Quiel in March 19, 2013. Chato serves in the parish as catechist in the public schools and Bible facilitator. Jonathan is a young catechist, so also Noli, who was once a member of the Knights of the Altar. Glosary and Jhonel are members of the choir at the Diocesan Shrine of Mary Help of Christians. The couple attests that the formation they received as Salesian Cooperators made a difference in their family life. It also deepened their faith in God and their relationship with Mary and St. John Bosco. They feel truly happy to be counted among the members of Don Bosco’s vast Salesian Family worldwide. They are convinced that this vast Salesian Family was with them when tragedy struck their family last July 7, 2015. 16

That night, Chato and her son, Noli, were watching TV together, talking about what to cook for breakfast. They were to leave early the next day for their monthly pilgrimage to the Mountain of Salvation in Batulao (Batangas). Chato went to bed leaving her son resting outside. Later that night, a friend of Noli came; together they got on the motorcycle to fetch a fellow catechist, Jessel, to bring her home in LEDC, Canlubang. While Noli and Jessel were on their way to Canlubang, a truck drove head on against them. It was about 11:30 PM when the De Guzman family was awakened by the barangay captain who informed them of the tragic accident. In the hospital, they saw the lifeless body of Noli. Salesian sisters, Salesian Cooperators, parishioners, co-workers in the church, friends, and relatives. They were there to comfort and strengthen them in whatever way they could. The family felt that God had not left them. He was there all along. Chato described how, right from the start of this Calvary, she sought comfort in Mary, Help of Christians. “Nagpaampon ako kay Maria, Mapagampon sa mga Kristiyano.” She counted on her help as spiritual mother. She was inspired by Mary’s example; her son, Jesus, died on the cross and she accepted God’s will, though it pierced her heart. In their journey, the family was comforted by their belief that we are pilgrims on earth and our real home is in heaven where we shall experience the ultimate joy and peace. Noli was called by God to go ahead of them. They hope that one day their family will be together again in heaven. The case of Noli and Jessel remains unresolved in the court. he FMA Provincial Educating Community of the Philippines-Papua New Guinea Province is made up of the different local Educating Communities of FMA schools and institutions with its main objective centered on Family Ministry. This Family Ministry Plan was launched in 2011 by the Provincial Educating Community Core Group in all the FMA schools and centers to guide the local Educating Communities in promoting family life and values and thus bear witness to their Christian faith. To achieve its main objective, the FMA Provincial Educating Community has created a lot of projects, activities and venues to educate families to Christian

love, uphold the sanctity of marriage and the dignity of human life, protect and defend the right of the family, and living the Preventive System in our own families. First of all, the Educating Community Core Group (ECCG) was established in each local community especially in schools. This is made up RI GLIIHUHQW HOHFWHG OHYHO SDUHQW RIÀ FHUV WHDFKHU representatives, student representatives and FMA representatives. It is the basic venue where parents, students, teachers and FMA’s meet, work in harmony while planning and implementing projects and activities aligned with its primary apostolate that will foster each member family’s spiritual growth, strengthen their relationship and guide them in their journey as a Christian family.

One of the main activities of the ECCG is to plan and organize the Parents’ Formation quarterly. Different speakers are invited to talk on a variety of topics so as to educate parents on the preventive system of education, family life, parent and child relationships, discipline, bullying, proper use of social media and technology, etc. Another activity initiated in 2011 by the Christian Living Education Department together with the Evangelization Committee of Don Bosco School Manila was the Word of God Camp. families are also asked to participate in the annual Family Living Rosary, usually held in the month of October. Activities like the Family Day and Gratitude Day enables families to come together and collaborate in a variety of song and dance presentations. At the provincial level, the annual Gratitude Day is also done with cultural presentations and sports festivals. These celebrations become a venue for families to meet other families from different communities, create memories and form a strong bond among its family members. The Educating Community also participates in several outreach programs like Medical and Dental Missions, annual blood letting and relief and rehabilitation operations to different calamity-affected areas in the Philippines just like during typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), etc. Christmas gift-giving (Handog Puso) is another opportunity for the apostolate to grow in the Educating Community. Member families prepare Christmas packages annually and share them with about 500 under-served families from chosen communities. Another activity at the provincial level is the Educating Community Congress wherein speakers are invited to share their expertise and experiences on relevant topics and themes that form part of the formation program of the different educating communities. The 1st EC Congress, with the theme “FMA Educating Communities: Witnesses to the New Evangelization,” was held last August 9-11, 2013. The second EC Congress was held last November 28-29, 2015 with the theme “FMA EC Families As 20

These celebrations become a venue for families to meet other families from different communities, create memories and form a strong bond among its family members. Missionaries In Bringing the Gospel of Joy: A New Hope to the World.” It was also a part of the celebration of the 60th year of the Philippine Province and in line with the thrust of the 2014 Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the pastoral challenges to the family. Tree planting and street clean ups are also some of the social activities that the educating community participates in to respond to the Pope’s call on stewardship of the environment.

Lastly, the establishment of volunteer parent catechists in the different schools is another apostolate to answer our call to bear witness to our Christian faith. These catechists are assigned to teach in the public schools that belong to the nearby parish. With all these activities, we hope to achieve an Educating Community Family that is built on the Catholic Faith, the Preventive System and the Gospel.

FAMILY MATTERS MAGAZINE Family Matters Magazine! The name of the magazine by itself speaks about the identity and content of the publication. “Family matters!” For this reason, the magazine contains only family matters. Now on its fifth year, this family magazine is reaching not only the families of the students of Don Bosco schools but also the students of other Catholic schools. It has won back-to-back awards from the Catholic Mass Media Awards as the Best FamilyOriented Magazine for 2015 and 2016. Hoping to reach out to more homes through the help of other Catholic schools around the country, Family Matters Magazine is more than just a printed magazine. It is a ministry to the family, particularly to the Filipino family. Here is a quick glimpse into this magazine, that we may appreciate its value and eventually be convinced that we get our money’s worth at Php120 a copy.

MAGAZINE IS FOR PARENTS AND YOUTH Family Matters Magazine allows parents and their adolescent children to talk about relevant family matters as they read this magazine. It provides parents with much needed information on how to fulfill their roles in the family. On parenting, each issue comes with family values, present family concerns, model celebrity or non-celebrity couples, and even lighter parental concerns like cooking, housekeeping, and family-bonding activities. On growing-up concerns of adolescents, each issue brings family values, school issues, career guides, celebrity or non-celebrity models for youth, the best and the worst in the world of youth, health and hygiene, and relationshipbuilding. How about kids 11 years old and below? They too are part of the magazine. Each issue comes with it a free kids’ magazine, Robotars. Truly informative and activity-filled, this kids’ magazine deals with health, ecology, and other day-today practical concerns in the kids’ real and self-created world.

The magazine counters the culture of relativism. Aside from two regular feature articles from the publisher, all the other articles are written by families—married couples and youth. They are based primarily on personal experiences. But there is no relativism here, for they are firmly founded on primary resources such as values, laws, beliefs, principles, traditions, cultures, and science.

The magazine counters the culture of consumerism and materialism.

The magazine believes that the family is the foundation of every society.

Family Matters Magazine stands for the genuine treasures of every family: living life simply, enjoying the beauty of family living, and loving one another. True happiness need not be expensive. Hence, this magazine gives a lot of tips for creative, expense-free, living and bonding!

We all believe that the basic unit of society, and of the Church, is the family. Family Matters Magazine strongly believes that by building a family with solid moral values and principles, we gradually build a strong and solid society of persons with untarnished integrity.

The Special Section Every issue of Family Matters Magazine includes a Special Section that focuses on an issue or topic of great interest and relevance. Three to four articles, written by experts, insure a thorough treatment of the topic. This Special Section is a favorite spot of many readers.

t was just midmorning of March 25, 2017, Solemnity of the Annunciation, and the humidity was already high in Kerema. Yet, outside, people have gathered on the stretch of road from the convent of the Sisters of Charity that led to the Holy Spirit Cathedral of the Diocese of Kerema.
