Gary McSheffrey was pleased with his side’s progression to the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup.

Rovers U23s registered an impressive 4-0 win over Category One Academy team Aston Villa at the Keepmoat Stadium to secure their place in the next stage of the competition with one game to spare

“It was a good result and good performance,” McSheffrey said.

“There were one or two things in the first half that we weren’t happy with but we sorted that out at half time and second half we were quite comfortable at times.

“Once we kept our shape and discipline we had the pace and firepower to punish them and that proved the difference.”

Four U18s players featured in the match with Will McGowan and Elliott Walker completing 90 minutes and Lirak Hasani and Junior Smith coming off the bench.

“We blooded quite a few youngsters and I was happy with how they all played and responded to playing at the Keepmoat Stadium for the first time in a long time,” McSheffrey added.

“I was delighted with how they performed. Will McGowan did well in the middle. I thought he controlled the game at times.”
