From the editor Spring is in the Air As I write this in mid March, Nantucket videographer Lisa Frey is out and about on the island filming some of us dancing and singing to the Academy Award nominated song “Happy,” by Pharrell Williams. This infectious number has become something of an Internet meme, with people filmed dancing happily from the streets of New York City to military bases in Afghanistan. Many of the videos have been done in anticipation of the United Nations International Day of Happiness on March 20, recognizing the relevance of happiness and wellbeing as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world. Look for the Nantucket version on social media. After this past winter on Nantucket—which has been much like most of the northern U.S. weather wise—we Nantucketers welcome a reason to celebrate happiness. And we offer plenty of reasons to be happy about visiting or living on Nantucket in this Spring Issue of Nantucket Home. Our annual Nantucket Daffodil Festival uplifts thousands every spring by celebrating our island’s bright yellow daffodil blooms with an antique car parade, a picnic along Main Street in ‘Sconset and the dusting off of winter’s cobwebs in retail shops and restaurants. This year we observe the 40th anniversary of this famous event staged by Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce. Daffy Fest, as it’s affectionately called, marks the first of the many galas, festivals and other happenings that provide so much fun and entertainment throughout the year. See our rundown of what’s hot for the season ahead, from Nantucket Wine Festival in May to Nantucket Film Festival in June and Nantucket Race Week in August. The reopening of our seasonal restaurants will bring joy to many who appreciate great food and wine, which we have available in abundance on Nantucket. You might argue that we rival even Manhattan in the number of top-notch restaurants per square mile at the height of our season. Local wine and food connoisseur Carolyn Walsh recalls her fondest memories of our moveable feast, from her visits as a young girl to the famed Opera House Restaurant to her continuing pleasure in visiting Le Languedoc, Ships Inn and others. Besides food and wine, our cultural and natural history draws many to Nantucket. The island’s storied past as a world leader in the whaling industry and the China Trade, along with our great number of extant 18th- and 19th-century homes—probably the most in the United States—brings devotees of history and culture to our shores. We take a look at a few milestone eras here through the prism of Nantucket History in 10 Objects. Let us know your choice for those Nantucket-related objects you think best embody the history and spirit of our island. Warmer weather will come and give us a beautiful summer and glorious fall. Trust me, after almost four decades of living in New England, I’ve seen this before, including significant deep snowfalls in late April. Here’s hoping things heat up sooner than that, as has our housing market in the last year or so. For this and the next four issues of Nantucket Home in 2014, we’re here to extol both the pleasures of life on Nantucket, whatever the weather, and the pleasures of owning a home here.

Memories of high–low, local–global food adventures on Nantucket. CAROLYN WALSH Nantucket. Heading out to dinner. Daffodil Festival, Christmas Stroll and summer cottage dinners. Mothers Day pancakes on paper plates, an annual homage from the Nantucket Rotary Club. Kids sledding down Main Street, hot chocolate warmed. Potlucks at Cisco. Blanket-to-blanket 4th of July picnickers, each staking a claim for the best fireworks views at Jetties Beach. To this very day, the warmth of morning sunshine brings me back to breakfasts at Childrens Beach, early breakfasts, before my August island woke up, the air deliciously fragrant with just baked doughnuts, sweet rugosa and brisk salt air. Who says you need a pilgrimage to Yountville, NYC, Chicago or Catalonia to indulge in the ultimate, unforgettable, foodie experience? For me, it was a table for 20 in a private home on Nantucket’s Main Street, presided over by Dominique Demarville, Chef du Cave at Maîson Veuve Clicquot. The Sea Grille’s Chef EJ Harvey was in the kitchen. EJ had agreed to step in, impossibly at the last minute when a nationally acclaimed chef withdrew, the result of a sudden emergency. We didn’t
know it yet, but this Nantucket Wine Festival flagship event, a Maîson Veuve Clicquot 200th anniversary celebration brunch, was destined to become a wine milepost forever savored by the 20 pilgrims seated at that remarkable table. Quite swept away, I wrote to my friend EJ soon after, “They’re still talking! How absolutely, wonderfully spot-on your food pairings, one scrumptious bite after another, were to each of those gorgeous champagnes. I’m glad I love cooking and fine dining so much. I loved imagining your inspiration in marrying scallops (and carrots!) and salty, cheesy frico crisps, with the minerality of La Grand Dame ‘98. It brought to mind that wonderfully refreshing, briny scent of a good swim at Dionis. I loved that fleeting suggestion of thyme, so precisely bridging the lobster’s richness to the subtly bitter acidity of the ’02 Rosé. And your morels seemed to be the harmony under all those opulent, fleeting, mushroomy subtleties in the RV ‘88, the variety of textures on the plate mirroring the layers of flavor in the vintage. Wow!” It was fitting, in a way, that the last NWF brunch at 77 Main—a Grande Photo by Pixel Perfect Dame’s home owned by a Grande Dame

Food Story
hostess—honored Madame Clicquot’s anniversary and was produced by local talent. Funny how God has a way of divining those things. Much earlier, in the pre-adolescent development of my food biases, I’d yearned to be old enough finally to accompany the grown-ups to Gwen Gaillard’s Opera House. I’d have been about 11 then and made to wait a couple more years before I, too, could declare I’d eaten a salad named Julius Caesar and a cold soup called crème vichyssoise glacée. The latter, with help from my French studies book, I’d interpreted far too literally. Why would a restaurant serve ice cream soup? And what had leaks, the bowl? Founded in 1946 and enduring for the next 40 years, the Opera House nightly hosted Nantucket’s elite and elite wannabes, with abundant style and a generous helping of culinary aplomb. Gwen’s cookbook Recipes with Love is a local icon, published in 1966, almost 20 years ahead of the Silver Palate Cookbook. In it, Gwen coached our island’s home cooks that bouillabaisse was a kind of fish stew and chocolate mousse was just pudding. Finally, at the family dinner table we could be as adventurous as the legions of new gourmet restaurants being launched both here and afar during the 1980’s. James Beard was here, too. In 1953, a 50-year-old Beard arrived for the summer to operate Chez Lucky Pierre, a rustic, gravel-floored burger joint with a gastronomic bent, located at 10 Broad Street, where Walter’s is now. Beard’s venture lasted only a season, during which Beard quipped: “The natives resent the off-islanders. We have had reports that we take dope and have sex orgies in

the middle of Lucky Pierre’s all the time.” Then came Jean-Charles Berruet’s re-imagining in 1969 of ‘Chanticleer in Sconset. Chef Berruet raised the bar for Nantucket gourmands. No less social than the Opera House but entirely more haute, and with a decidedly classic French flair, by 1987 the Chanticleer established its future as the brightest culinary star on Nantucket, with one of the top wine lists in the world. Since 2006, Jeff Worster and Susan Handy, both of Black Eyed Susan’s fame, have operated the Chanticleer. Chef Berruet’s lobster soufflés are absent, but Worster and Handy’s 21st-century interpretation of classic French dining remains stellar. Were Nantucket restaurateurs sharpening the cutting edge of America’s finest dining? Mais, oui! Another of my early foodie discoveries, this one a circa 1970 pioneer among the growing “real food” circle of restaurateurs, and just slightly ahead of Alice Walters’ opening of Chez Panisse, was Billy Cassidy’s Something Natural. A daily resource for hot soup and fresh bread for the lunch hour set, Something Natural challenged Nantucket Bakeshop for Best in Show in the Portuguese bread arena. And while I’ll never refuse a second helping of the Bakeshop’s sublime loaf—it’s the one they ship all over the world at Christmastime—the mouth watering sandwiches of fresh Portuguese, whole wheat, rye, oatmeal, herb, raisin, pumpernickel and challah breads that are made-to-order at Something Natural on Cliff Road are hard to beat. These trailblazers, and the culinary virtuosity apparent here during the years Photo by Terry Pommett since, have assured Nantucket’s place as

an acclaimed food and wine destination, one that rivals cities a hundred times our population. We’ve still got our beloved Chanticleer and, thankfully, 20 years of famed co-stars Angela & Seth Raynor with their epicurean triumvirate: Pearl, Boarding House and Corazon del Mar. Incidentally, this group spawned Cru, the island’s visually stunning and superb raw oyster bar. Similarly, Orla and Michael Lascola’s American Seasons, with it’s playful twists on American favorites and celebrated wine list, recently spawned yet another gold star eatery in the Proprietors, with Chef Tom Berry. This coming season we’ve got former Brant Point Grill Chef Fred Bisaillon’s B-ACKyard BBQ to look forward to in the old Captain Tobey’s building. All the while, Ventuno’s signature un morso, those little gems of pre-dinner morsels, continue to assure diners that culinary triumphs lie ahead. Pazzo, Lola and Lolaburger have got the contemporary vibe, with live music, casually sophisticated camaraderie and great food. There’s Straight Wharf, too—Ah, Straight Wharf! This exalted ode to the pleasures of seafood comes from Jock Gifford, Gabriel Frasca and Amanda Lydon. Annye’s and Pi have soups in spades—Pi Pizza is a world unto itself— and the Juice Bar continues to put every other American ice cream shack to shame. And there are the consistent delights of fine dining and enticing menus at Dune, 56 Union, Òran Mór, Town, ‘Sconset Cafe, Company of the Cauldron, Yoshi’s, Queequegs and newest stars Island Kitchen and Breeze Cafe. Book a table for sunset dinners at Galley Beach and Toppers at the Wauwinet. Wind down casually at Center Street Bistro, the Starlight Cafe, Fog Island, Millies or the famed Brotherhood of Thieves. Thankfully, there are still the piano bars at the Club Car and the Summer House. And just like those highly trafficked pedestrian corners across our American hubs, a new breed of food trucks are beginning to appear locally.
Yes, Nantucket’s got it all, and these are just a few of my favorites among the many Nantucket eateries. Happily, we have no fast food chains and no mall food courts. It’s easy to find a diversity of high–low, local–global food cultures that don’t require the gourmand or the just plain hungry to crisscross through outer boroughs to satisfy a craving. Still, I’m challenged to visit each at least once during a summer a season. I’m most fond of those places where many of us take comfort being “regulars,” where we’re assured the pleasure of a symbiotic rhythm and a shared conversation that goes deeper than polite greetings. Especially, Le Languedoc and Ships Inn, where hosts Al Cunha and Bob Moulder, respectively, stretch the meaning and benefits of hospitality to make diners feel like a chosen few. At Languedoc, I flip for the chicken livers and what I’ve always declared to be the best lobster on the island. My vote’s for prawns at Ship’s Inn. Please don’t spread the word about these last two places. We like them just fine, peopled exactly the way they are. Of course, should you decide to visit one, both the proprietors and I will welcome you to pull up a stool or chair, for what’s sure to be a memorable dining experience. NH A graduate professional in wine studies from the Culinary Institute of America and veteran of food & wine event production, Carolyn Walsh describes herself as “obsessively curious.” She digs deeply into the world of food & wine—the art, the science, the people, and especially, the culture. & Hewn Artist Jean Petty and master carver Paul McCarthy create quarterboards, signs and stunning future heirlooms sculpted in the natural beauty of wood. WILLIAM FERR ALL
nantucket HOME 27
For more than two decades, Nantucket wood carver Paul McCarthy has created traditional quarter boards to adorn the entryway to homes, signs to help locate businesses and sculpted figures comparable to the best examples of historic American folk art. With his partner Jean Petty, a graphic artist and designer who manages their business, Nantucket Carving & Folk Art, the duo has produced hundreds of distinctive signs and accomplished works of folk art. McCarthy works his magic in their studio workshop on Orange Street near the rotary, where colorful examples of his work are displayed on the front porch and in their gallery. Inside their studio workshop, projects underway show how McCarthy and Petty work together, with McCarthy chip-
28 nantucket HOME
ping away at slabs or blocks of wood until the final image emerges in relief, then Petty using her artistic skills to add the painted or gilded surfaces. An especially complicated work might require more than 300 hours of carving alone. Eager to show their work in progress, Petty and McCarthy invite customers into his carving studio to look over drawings—he’s an accomplished illustrator, too—and to watch him chip and chisel away at rough-cut pieces of wood. “Bring the family to watch,” invites their business brochure. Like many carvers and sculptors, McCarthy finds his wood from sources far and wide, as well as from local landowners and reclaimed lumber supplies. On a recent visit, Petty pointed to a photo of a recent wall plaque with a whaling scene, now hanging in a Nantucket home. “That wood
came from a nearby wood pile and was almost petrified,” she noted. Throughout the gallery shop, you’ll see colorful whirly-gigs, bird sculptures, vintage signs, murals and art on canvas. On Nantucket, besides their ubiquitous signage, the public sees their most prominent carving on the façade of the Whaling Museum. The wonderful action-filled mural “Going on the Whale, depicts sailors in a rowboat pursuing a whale, as the mother whaling ship floats in the distance. Starting this spring, McCarthy’s work will be seen for six months in the company of work by historic New England wood carver John Haley Bellamy, who lived from 1836 – 1914. Best known for his exuberant American eagle carvings with colorful patriotic elements as part of the design, Bellamy
also created carved animals, furniture including decorative cases for clocks and frames decorated with ancient Masonic symbols. McCarthy uses Bellamy’s techniques and style to create spectacular carved eagles with outstretched golden wings. A Maine native, Bellamy lived a largely itinerant life, working in shipyards and elsewhere including in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Boston and Charlestown, Massachusetts while carving on the side. His famous Lancaster eagle figurehead hangs on permanent display at the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News, Virginia. The exhibit “Bold & Brash: The Art of John Halley Bellamy” opens April 4 and runs through October 3 at the Portsmouth, NH, Historical Society. For more information, see www.portsmouthhistory.org. ith hundreds of occasions to potentially fill up Nantucket calendars from late spring to early fall, many on island during those times consider a few events to be red letter happenings. Nantucket Daffodil Festival, always held the last full weekend in April, marks an early beginning to the island’s awakening from winter. This year, the venerable celebration observes its 40th year, produced by Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce. What better way to celebrate a Nantucket spring than with an antique car parade up Nantucket’s Main Street then a community picnic along Main Street in ‘Sconset, with both events framed by thousands of bright yellow daffodils in bloom? And be sure to see the finest in daffodil blooms from local gardeners on Saturday and Sunday of “Daffy Weekend” at the 40th Annual Daffodil Flower Show by Nantucket Garden Club, held at Bartlett’s Ocean View Farm. By early July, when typically the summer’s first heat wave arrives, thousands of Nantucketers cool down in town for a rousing July 4th on Main Street celebration. Firemen’s hoses spray great plumes of water up and down the streets and sidewalks—come prepared for laughs and dressed to be drenched—with crowds gathering later that night on Jetties Beach for spectacular fireworks produced by Nantucket Visitor Services. In early August, thousands of island residents and visitors alike gather again on Jetties Beach for the annual Boston Pops on Nantucket concert, an evening of musical fun with the revered orchestra and a guest performer to benefit Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Whatever your interest, from gardening to food and wine to theater and music or art and antiques, there’s an event that celebrates that during summer on Nantucket. Families will find plenty of offerings; many events are designed for sophisticated fun. Most summertime events help support the many non-profit groups on Nantucket that work year-round to provide health-related support and social services. If you plan to be on-island this summer, pull out your calendar now to check what’s happening whenever you’re here from spring until fall. With a half-dozen or more events daily at the height of summer, our list is neither exhaustive nor detailed. Visit the sponsoring organizations’ websites for event times, ticket prices and locations. To keep up with Nantucket events yearround, visit the island’s newspaper of record The Inquirer & Mirror at www.ack.net, see website and email newsletter Mahon About Town at www.mahonabouttown.com or visit the website of seasonal newspaper Yesterday’s Island at www. nantucket.net. Native American arrowheads and tools ca. 1,000 BC – 1100 AD The first humans on Nantucket probably roamed its glacier-formed hills and valleys before it became an island around 5,000 years ago after the oceans rose to isolate it from the mainland. Primarily a hunting and fishing culture, Nantucket’s Native Americans were Pokanokets, more commonly called to this day the Wampanoags. Indian relics can be found just about anywhere on the island, but old hands at the hunt know of a few sites where camps were probably set up, so they yield more discoveries. According to archeologists, Native American implements found locally are similar to those found on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard and can date back to 1,000 BC, although most found these days are from around 1,000 years ago. Most arrowheads are made from quartz, while larger implements might be fashioned from granite or sandstone. For details of Nantucket’s geological and natural history, see Nantucket: A Natural History, by Peter Brace, or visit the natural science collections of Maria Mitchell Association on Milk Street, www.mariamitchell.org. can chart the history of Nantucket, through its ups and downs, by the people who’ve lived on the island, the influence of Nantucketers in the world or, in many cases, by the objects created here. For this issue of Nantucket Home, we chose 10 objects that we think well represent the island at various times in its history. Each one was greatly valued when it was created and, often, beyond that time and into the present. From the largely utilitarian nature of Native American arrowheads and tools to the highly decorative quality of works by Nantucket fine artists to our delicious native scallops, our list is neither exhaustive nor definitive. But it’s a good place to start a conversation about what you might include on a list of objects that embody the history and spirit of Nantucket.

Whaleship harpoon and cutting spade, ca. early-mid 19th century. Whaleship snatch block, ca. late 17th- to mid-19th century.

Boats first set out from Nantucket in hunt for whales in the late 1600s. By 1766, more than 100 whaling vessels sailed out of Nantucket, part of the island’s rise to being among the world’s leading whaling ports from the mid-1700s to around 1830, with over 150 vessels eventually sailing from the island for ocean voyages of up to two to three years. Concurrently, Nantucket’s ocean-going vessels became an important part of the prosperous China Trade. These Nantucket-made whaling tools, from the collection of Robert Hellman, were crafted by Nantucket blacksmiths. The spade, probably made in the first quarter of the 19th century, was forged by Samuel Brown Folger, whose initials are hammered above an eagle’s outstretched wings. The single-flued harpoon, or “iron” as their makers called them, was made by Elisha Parker, said to have been the last whalecraft blacksmith on Nantucket, probably in the mid 1800s. The whaling harpoons and cutting spade were important tools in the killing and harvesting of whales, with the harpoon used to land the whale and the spade used to cut it up and help peel away the whale’s valuable blubber. Descended in the family of Nantucket whaling Captain Charles Grant, the whaleship snatch block would have been part of the intricate system of ropes and winches used to hoist the carcasses of whales onto deck for processing.

No 3 R. H. Macy’s red star ca. late 1850s
Rowland Hussey Macy, native son of Nantucket and founder of Macy’s department store, knew better than anyone else the nostalgic power of the island’s whaling era. He harnessed it in the form of a single red star, which he first packaged with a sailor’s yarn when he opened his Manhattan store in 1858. Born in 1822, Macy was only a boy of about 15 and expected to assist in the island’s whaling industry when he set off on his first voyage as a cabin boy for the Emily Morgan. According to Macy company history: “While he was with the ship, there was a bad storm and the only navigational tool they had to go by was the North Star, which in this storm appeared to have a reddish glow to it. That’s how they got their bearings and stayed on course. After that trip, R.H. Macy never went back to the sea, but he got a red star tattoo because he always considered that to be a lucky thing for him.” Macy began using images of the star in his advertising copy shortly after he opened his first New York City store in 1858. The earliest existing images date to 1863. 52 nantucket HOME
Macy used variations of the star in his logos for the first 12 years. It wasn’t until the 1870s that he settled on its current, solid red incarnation, which he used for a private in-store label with which he sold popular books, clothing and food, and transferred it to the store’s façade. Although historic records cast doubt on the legend, after Macy passed away in 1877, the store continued to perpetuate the lore. (Contributed by Marli Guzzetti) For more on the legend and lore of R.H. Macy’s red star, see the 2009 book Macy’s: The Star. The Store. The Story. Square One Publishers.

No 4 Nantucket desk and silver Cylinder-fall desk, Heman Ellis, 1808 Silver spoons, Benjamin Bunker, early 1880s Silver ladle, J. Easton, ca. 1840
Thanks to trading by sea along coastal New England and beyond, Nantucket in the 18th and 19th centuries had a steady supply of the fine woods and hardware needed to build substantial pieces of furniture. Besides craftsmen with refined furniture making skills who moved to the island, local craftsmen drew inspiration from items imported to the island to be sold by local merchants. By the 18th century, furniture made on Nantucket compared favorably with the finest pieces made elsewhere in New England and the Mid Atlantic states. John Jackson (ca. 1705-1772) was the first silversmith known to have lived on Nantucket, although others from off island had regular Nantucket customers. By the mid-18th century, silver was a common household item on Nantucket, and by the 19th century several silversmiths practiced on the island including, prominently, James Easton (1807-1903),
Frederick Sanford (mid 1800s) and William Hadwen (1791-1862). Much of Nantucket silver, used especially in Quaker households involved in the whaling industry, consisted of spoons, cups and other basic utensils of everyday life. The cylinder-fall desk was made by Heman Ellis on Nantucket in 1808, for Sylvanus Ewer (1767-1836), a wealthy Nantucket ship owner who lived on Union Street. Materials used include mahogany, cherry, poplar and pine, with brass hardware. For more on Nantucket furniture, see Harbor and Home: Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts, 1710 – 1850, by Brock Jobe, Gary R. Sullivan & Jack O’Brien. For more on Nantucket silver, visit Rafael Osona Auctions at www.nantucketauctions.com. For an excellent overview of historic Nantucket-made furniture, silver and other crafts, see the now out-of-print The Decorative Arts and Crafts of Nantucket, by Charles and Mary Grace Carpenter. No 5 Open-form Nantucket Lightship Basket Late 19th century
Most would agree on Nantucket’s most famous handcrafted item, which bears the island’s name, the Nantucket Lightship Basket. Adopted by sailors from traditional Native American basket forms to wile away their time at sea, the lightship basket is often seen today in a swing handled-version, carried on the arm of fashionable women. This elegant and rare open-form basket, made at the end of the 19th century, features stave ends protruding through the hoops and above the rim in the form of decorative heart shapes. Crisscrossed reeds form the rim wrap; two concentric circles form its base. It measures 9 1/8” in diameter and 4” high. In 2005, it set a world-record for lightship baskets sold at auction when it was hammered down by Rafael Osona Auctions on Nantucket for $115,000. For more fine examples of historic Nantucket Lightship Baskets, see Rafael Osona Auctions at www.nantucketauctions.com. For the history and craft of making lightship baskets, visit the charming Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum at 49 Union Street on Nantucket, www.nantucketlightshipbasketmuseum.org.

No 6 Headstone of Eunice Ross 1895
Members of Nantucket’s early African American community played important roles in Massachusetts and U.S. history. Absalom Boston, a third generation Nantucketer, was one of only two known black captains of whaling ships. Eunice Ross, a Nantucket schoolgirl who was forced along with other local African American children to attend their own separate school, became one of the trailblazers for public school integration in Massachusetts and on the island. Her personal petition, along with others from Nantucket, urged state legislatures to allow African Americans entry to Nantucket’s then whites–only schools. Ross’ appeal was instrumental in Massachusetts passing a law in 1845 prohibiting discrimination in public schools. By the mid 1800s, most of Nantucket’s citizens of color lived in so-called New Guinea, the area around today’s Five Corners. Nearby, a “coloured cemetery” was established behind today’s Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and a separate African American school was built in the neighborhood around 1825. That building, the African American Meeting House on Nantucket, served as a blacks-only school and church for the island’s African American community for more than a hundred years. Today, this restored historic architectural gem is home to readings, concerts and even the occasional small wedding. The Colored Cemetery—its now official name was urged by Nantucket residents including African Americans—holds the graves of Eunice Ross and Absalom Boston along with other African American citizens of Nantucket. Although Boston’s marker is lost, stones for other members of his family are located in the southwest corner of the cemetery.

No 7 Paintings by Nantucket artists Renowned artists and artisans have long found inspiration on Nantucket and have considered it a haven in which to work productively. The descendant of a Nantucket family, Elizabeth Rebecca Coffin (1850-1930) attended Vassar College, where she studied under famed Nantucket astronomer Maria Mitchell. Pursuing painting as a career, Coffin traveled extensively and studied under renowned 19th-century American realist painter Thomas Eakins. She was also close friends with artist William Merritt Chase and was part of an elite circle of accomplished American women artists in the late 19th century. Later in life, she moved to Nantucket and painted numerous island scenes and portraits. Along with Eastman Johnson and W. Ferdinand Macy, Coffin led a group of prominent artists working on Nantucket in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their presence laid the groundwork for the burgeoning Nantucket Art Colony that flourished on the island from around 1920 – 1945. Janet (Ball) McGlinn (1915–88) was one of the most

talented postwar WWII artists working on Nantucket. She founded the Nantucket Printmakers in 1969 with Schuyler Bradt (1909–79) and taught printmaking, especially the technique of collograph. A Philadelphia native, McGlinn attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Art Students League in New York City. Her stunning print series, created in 1972 and first exhibited in 1980, vividly highlights key scenes and characters from Melville’s famous whaling epic Moby-Dick. Today, Nantucket’s artist and artisans continue to thrive artistically and commercially in dozens of individual studios and group galleries on the island. For more on historic Nantucket artists, visit www.nha.org. To see works created during the Nantucket Art Colony period and by today’s local artists, see the Artists Association of Nantucket at www.nantucketarts.org or visit their Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street, two blocks off Main Street. McGlinn’s painting can be found at Sylvia Antiques, lower Main Street, Nantucket, www.SylviaAntiques.com
No 8 Tourism postcards Early-20th century - present
By the turn of the 20th century, Nantucket was annually welcoming thousands of visitors on vacation including an actors’ colony in ‘Sconset. The steam car had taken over island roads. Liquor saloons were allowed to open. Retail stores targeted to tourists flourished. Forty or more boarding houses, inns and hotels were included in a directory of 1915. Despite ups and downs during war times, recessions and depressions, the business of tourism on Nantucket, in the long run, continued to grow substantially. Today, the industry is one of the top two generators of income for the island along with the real estate business. What the stereoscope had done to increase awareness of Nantucket’s charms and vistas in the 19th century, the modern postcard has done since the early 1900s. From scenes of historic homes and public buildings to the island’s beautiful beaches to bucolic images of Main Street, Nantucket’s appeal is captured for thousands to see and pass along in hand-held, vivid color.

For more on the history of tourism on Nantucket, see Holiday Island, by Nantucket Historian Clay Lancaster and usually available at Mitchell’s Bookworks on Nantucket. For a colorful compendium of Nantucket postcards, see Nantucket Memories: That Far Away Island, by Laszlo Felsobu Nagy, available in the museum shop of Nantucket Historic Association at 11 Broad St., Nantucket.
No 9 Nantucket Reds™ Nantucket Reds™ are a trim, tailored style of trousers produced and distributed by Murray’s Toggery Shop, located on Main Street on Nantucket. Made of brick-red sailcloth, they were reportedly inspired by uniforms worn by the New York Yacht Club. First conceived as shorts, the clothing line of Nantucket Reds™ has since expanded into trousers, caps, jackets, ties and other apparel for both men and women. After a few wearings and washings, the pants fade to a light pink. In fact, Nantucket Reds™ are “Guaranteed to Fade.” The book The Official Preppy Handbook, published in 1980, helped to boost their popularity. Today, Nantucket Reds™ are considered an important part of the quintessential preppy wardrobe, often worn in tandem with leather or canvas boat shoes. Despite the many imitators that have appeared, there is only one source for official Nantucket Reds™: Murray’s Toggery Shop, 62 Main Street, Nantucket. For store hours, call 800-368-2134 or 508-228-0437, or visit www.NantucketReds.com

No 10 Nantucket Bay Scallop Few objects embody so many aspects of Nantucket as the island’s best known marine product, the Nantucket Bay Scallop, argopecten irradians. In it can be found the rich history of Nantucket as a commercial fishing location, the influence and name recognition of Nantucket throughout the world, and the challenges of preserving the island’s natural beauty and assets. Known for its natural buttery sweetness, the scallop fished from Nantucket’s bays and harbors might be more sought after than any other type of scallop. For those who usually experience large, blander sea scallops, a bite into a fresh Nantucket Bay Scallop can be an epiphany. For more than a century now, they’ve been prized as a delicate and rich seafood, with those caught on Nantucket commanding among the highest prices at the fishmonger, in supermarkets and on restaurant tables. If you can get them. Threats to scallop beds up and down the East Coast have included overfishing, stormy weather and pollution. Nantucket’s remoteness helps the local crop to

rebound after most bad years, although the annual harvest has dropped significantly in the last two decades. According to many biologists, development and pollution have reduced and continue to threaten the important eel grass breeding grounds for the Nantucket Bay Scallop. Today, scallop fishing on the island is heavily regulated, including size and quantity limits, through oversight by the Nantucket Harbor and Shellfish Advisory Board. Fishing can be done only by permit, with the commercial season open during cold weather months from November 1 to May. Recreational or family scalloping, also by permit, begins one month sooner and ends in March. For more information on licenses for scalloping and other shell fishing on Nantucket, see www.http://nantucket-ma.gov/ or call 508-228-7261. For the best book about scalloping on Nantucket, with beautifully photographed images, see Scallop Season, A Nantucket Chronicle, by Jim Patrick and photographer Rob Benchley, available at Nantucket Atheneum or Mitchell’s Book Corner on Nantucket.

Island Practice - continued from pg.88
has changed? What’s led to this loss of hope?” “I’ve only seen him cry once, says Richard Ray, director of Nantucket’s Public Health Department. “That was with a suicide. For a brief couple of moments, he just fell apart.” That’s the yin and yang of Lepore, the occasionally macho outdoorsman but compassionate doctor who has been known to make house calls for reasons other than treatment, as he did one time to shovel snow for an elderly woman whose daughter had died of cancer the previous year. Belluck nicely captures the many facets of Lepore. He’s the nonconformist practitioner who’s amused by arrivals in the ER who have, problematically, inserted objects into their bodies. He’s the humane, warm-hearted small town doc who helps struggling year-rounders with their addictions and chronic illnesses. He’s sometimes a physician to VIPs like John Kerry, Chris Matthews and other seasonal luminaries who visit Nantucket. In several especially engaging chapters, Belluck dissects Lepore’s family, their relationship to Lepore as a husband and father, and their connection to his public life and to his work. Some reviewers have compared Island Practice favorably to John Berendt’s best selling book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, about the curiosities and characters of Savannah, Georgia. That book became a film directed by Clint Eastwood. The book Island Practice is reportedly under consideration as a television series by a production company connected to Ron Howard. Whenever and whether or not Belluck’s book finds an audience in cinematic form, you can’t beat a reading of its colorful, entertaining account of life and death 30 miles at sea. NH

THIS VIEW WILL NEVER CHANGE
150 years ago the island of Nantucket fell from its position as "whaling capital of the world." The Great Fire of 1846 burned much of downtown, oil was discovered on the mainland, and without the benefit of the Jet ties, Nantucket Harbor became too shallow for full whale ships to enter easily. As Nantucketers fell on hard times existing buildings were preserved rather than replaced, helping to protect the character of the island. Fifty years ago the Nantucket Conservation Foundation began its mission of preserving and maintaining the island's natural areas and resources. Together with other conservation organizations, the Foundation's efforts have ensured that half of
Nantucket will remain forever wild. The Windwept Cranberry Bog pictured above is one such protected property. Thanks to the hard work, generosity and forethought of others (and also to the economic woes of the post-whaling era) much of Nantucket remains the same as it was 200 years ago and will remain unchanged for future generations.
The view from this 5 bedroom home only changes with the

NANTUCKET IN
ISLAND PRACTICE
Cobblestone Rash, Underground Tom, and Other Adventures of a Nantucket Doctor by Pam Belluck When news arrived on Nantucket that a book about the island’s longtime resident surgeon and physician Dr. Timothy Lepore was in the works, local reactions were mixed. Many on Nantucket, whether or not they are his patients, adore Lepore. His estimable life-saving skills as a surgeon and his quirky personality have won him numerous fans during the 31 years that he and his family have lived on the island. To many he’s something of a hero and the doctor who’s wanted most when the fog rolls in and emergency surgery must happen here. But, after all, he’s a doctor and has seen dozens of the island’s residents in moments of great distress, sometimes brought on by putting themselves in compromising positions. As it turns out, Island Practice, the fascinating biography of Lepore by New York Times reporter Pam Belluck, includes both funny and tough stories of patient experiences, all told with the consent and cooperation of those mentioned in the book. Those accounts, along with Belluck’s thorough but admiring profile of Lepore, creates the best, most in-depth account so far of life today on Nantucket. There’s the story of then 44-year-old Doug Kenward, who was stabbed in the heart by his wife with a butcher knife. For Lepore, on Nantucket for barely a year at the time, this was the most life threatening case he had encountered, according to Belluck. With no time to transport Kenward off island for emergency surgery, Lepore sewed up the hole in Kenward’s heart with makeshift black silk thread. Kenward survived. After he regained consciousness and asked who Lepore was, the doctor told Kenward, “I run. I shoot. I fix people up.” Today, Kenward is a healthy marathon runner. And there’s Louise Hourihan, a fifth-generation Nantucketer who developed breast cancer. After she underwent weeks of chemotherapy, resulting in nausea and anxiety, Lepore procured some marijuana cookies to ease her. To get the cookies, he consulted with “Henry,” a local source he knew about for marijuana tea. Although the marijuana revelation in the book concerned some because of its illegality at the time, Hourihan says the cookies “definitely helped” her to relax and sleep, more so than a prescription she had been given earlier. Belluck writes that Hourihan, whose longtime regular island physician had died recently, also found Lepore to be sensitive and generous when she especially 88 nantucket HOME
needed that from a doctor. Lepore credits Henry with introducing him to falconry, now among the doctor’s passions that include hunting, collecting guns, marathon running—he has completed the Boston Marathon more than 40 times—and acquiring all kinds of historic and natural artifacts from Indian relics to feral remains. Inside his office on the campus of Nantucket Cottage Hospital, where Lepore has been Medical Director and head of the ER, visitors encounter knives, animal skeletons, vertebrae, arrowheads, antique prints and old family photos. It’s as if a Victorian cabinet of curiosities is doing double duty as a doctor’s waiting room. A LOCAL ICONOCLAST It’s also entirely in keeping with Lepore’s appreciation of gallows humor and the self-assured but iconoclastic image he maintains at the age of 70. “My father’s a big personality—he casts a very large kind of shadow,” says T.J., Lepore’s middle child. Most who know the doctor would agree. “For the smartest guy I’ve ever met, he does some of the craziest things I’ve ever seen,” says his brother-in-law and Nantucket police officer Steve Tornovish. In the most difficult part of the book for many on Nantucket, Belluck recounts the period from 2007 through 2008 when at least four teenagers on Nantucket committed suicide. As the island coroner and doctor to some of the families involved, Lepore was close to all of the cases and was shaken by them. As a longtime member of Nantucket’s school committee—Lepore’s wife Cathy is a counselor at the high school—Lepore wondered, “What Continued on pg. 83
