When I was young, I experienced the complicated feeling of going to a funeral home(ๅˆๅ–ช ). โ€œWhy were adults greeting each other with a smile when they were meeting on a sad day?โ€ I didnโ€™t know the answer until I grew up.

The feeling of sending someone away is painful, but seing old friends and family again is comforting and offers reassurance.

This portfolio contains school projects, contests, and projects that were conducted in 2021-2022, and interior projects that I was directly in charge of and developed during my design career. My main goal is to classify projects as life stages and talk about how we as a society can utilize architecture to live more fully.

The first stage is the time of need for creative space in childhood. The second represents the moment you become aware of the importance of nature in adulthood.

The third englobes the realization of the value of the people around you after retirement, a time when you need more friends.

The fourth refers to death, which people cannot avoid. You feel empty because of the loss of loved ones, and cherish the past, feelings and time you have spent with them.

The fifth is memory. I want to express longing and nostalgia.

Site : Seorae Island, Seoul, Korea

The whole city of Seoul is practically a no-kids zone. There are 70,000 playgrounds but no real place to play just for children. This issue in Korea has been coined as the epitome of a โ€œno kids zone.โ€ In many facilities such as cafes and restaurants, parents are not allowed to enter with children. American urban sociologist, Ray Oldenberg, emphasized the importance of a โ€œthird placeโ€, that is neither home nor school. Examples of a โ€œthird placeโ€ would be a cafe, bar, or bookstore where you can experience exchanges and communication through general contact with others. However, childrenโ€™s options for a โ€œthird placeโ€ haven have become more and more narrow.

With the only housing options available mostly being apartments in Korea, families with children living in apartments are shunned, as the playground has become more geared as community neighborhood spaces not specifically made with kids in mind. Growing children yearn for both internal and external space as well as chances to socialize. With very few spaces built specifically for youth in mind, children have no choice but to feel disconnected from both the outside world and shunned from local businesses.

With these major issues in mind, this project was targeted at single-parent families who are suffering the most. It is expected that residential facilities concentrated in Seoul will eventually be distributed over the Han River to alleviate insufficient residential facilities and traffic congestion. This interior space is 350 square feet and as a solution to these narrow space constraints, floor height was increased which allows for a creative space on the second floor that can be utilized by both children and parents. Different materials and selective furniture were used to comply with South Koreaโ€™s laws about adding additional floors. Moreover, since apartments in crowded cities have their set of challenges, this village complex was designed for children to be able to play free of noise between floors and to be protected from the clamor of the city. In this building, facilities for children to play were actively implemented to form a safer and more creative village community secluded from the bustle of the outside world.

The exterior structure shape resembles that of a wave, a symbol of youth and children who have to pass through the fluctuating rivers of life in the future.

Existing Seorae Island

Although it is known as an artificial island, the current Seorae Island was located on Banpo Island from the 17th to the 19th century. This land with a history can also has flower fields on Seorae Island that can be enjoyed. In addition, as various flowers and plants grow in abundance throughout the year, it is good for pictures and taking walks, so it can be a place of amusement for children.

Project Details

Date : Winter 2021

Client : Oneulwine Design : Panji Studio - Donghyun Kim Construction : Panji Studio - Teasub Song Site : Seongsu-dong, Seoul, Korea

Currently, the site in Seongsu-dong is significantly lacking in park facilities in the 2-ga area. Historically, Guro-gu and Seongsu-dong were the centers of industrialization within Seoul containing mostly factories, but these days, the factory areas in Seongsu-dong are gradually decreasing and gradually redeveloping, making it more suitable as a residential and business district. As prices cannot help rising due to how close it is to the nearby Han River, many hot places such as the Dior Seongsu branch and Blue Bottle have entered, and many stores are creating so-called โ€œhip sensibilitiesโ€ that have developed factory zones. In addition, a large number of startups and many large companies are moving there resulting in faster development. The fast modernization and redevelopment of these areas attract newcomers but inevitably result in gentrification. For example, after gentrification took place in hot areas like Hongdae, Sinchon, and Garosu-gil it affected communities of people previously living there as well as businesses, in a major way.

This site is a place where many office commercial districts are concentrated, but there are not enough spaces to take a walk or sit and relax in Hangang Park, which takes about 20-30 minutes on foot. After the urbanization of this area, it created a memorable green space, with a sustainable design, to give off positive energy to the surrounding environment.

Instead of creating a โ€œtrendyโ€ space like most newcomers to the area, it moved against the current and create a space with an emphasis on โ€œrestโ€ and โ€œregenerationโ€.

As of 2022, Seongsu is in the spotlight as an office commercial district. As nearby office buildings increased, commercial spaces naturally increased. However, as can be seen in the picture above, restaurants and nearby bars have not yet been actively distributed compared to cafes. Thus, visitors to the area need a rest place of rest and play, but cafes continue to enter as Korea is a strong cafe republic. Therefore, after meeting with the client, a space was planned with the idea that the importance of plants should be concentrated.

As mentioned above, there are environmental problems not only in Korea but also around the world. With the keyword โ€œrest,โ€ it reminds us of the importance of crating green space once again, and encourages city dwellers to visit a comfortable space.

Modern people who are tired of life or work naturally find nature.

ICONIC CHAIR

Architecture is about designing experiences. Architects go to great lengths to curate an amazing experience for their users. This obviously includes the walls, roof and floors, but often also extends to designing other details like paintings, lights and furniture. A detail that many architects find important is the chair.

PAVILION CHAIR

In Korea, you can often see 'Jungja' a Korean traditional pavilion. The current design was derived from the consideration of additional furniture to be placed here. In order to highlight modern furniture in the oriental design, the physical characteristics of leather and stainless steel and a mixed match design using traditional Korean โ€˜Boryoโ€™ which is a Korean cushion were used.

Design Competition : Starchitectโ€™s Chair

In this design contest instead of a one-person chair, a multi-seater chair was designed to accommodate multiple people. Furniture is mainly approached from the perspective of young able-bodied people, but this was planned for people of all ages in society to use. This chair was designed to change over time, like rice that ripens with days gone by, and like our bodies that mature with age.

As people get older, the importance of people around them increases, and naturally, we gain the ability to nurture relationships with people around us other than our family. Unconsciously we feel that we lack power as we age, and because of frequent chronic diseases and health concerns, we naturally come to value the importance of close relationships with those around us.

When I was young, there was a โ€˜Pyeongsangโ€™ (Korean outdoor chair) in front of the โ€˜Jungjaโ€™ (Korean pavilion) in the neighborhood, where adults gathered to talk while snacking on vegetables and so on. We could hang out with friends under the watchful eye of adults even though it wasnโ€™t the original purpose of these chairs. Inevitably we grew to assume our role sitting on the chair as the adults for the next generation who play carefree.

The copper material used for this chair changes in color and personality over time and as Wendell Phillips, an American social reformer, once said, โ€œPeople donโ€™t age, but ripen like good wineโ€. Over time, we want to preserve this tradition of public seating for the next generation and pass it on, just as our older generation protected and watched over us.

KARMA -DEATH

Individual Work

Project Details

\ Date : Autumn 2022 Site : Sejong-ro, Seoul, Korea

Buddhism has had a profound impact on Korean culture and is interwoven into the culture and history of Korean society. A key component of the religion is the concept of Karma, as well as earned Karma that determines your fate in the afterlife. Even today, many people hold '49Jae' 49 ceremonies to honor the dead.

Koreaโ€™s current government recently moved the presidentโ€™s office otherwise known as the โ€˜Blue Houseโ€™ to Yongsan, displaying radical changes in public opinion. The government spent billions of dollars on this change but promised to give the people the land back for a greater purpose. In Seoul, there is an incline in the population of people that continues to grow. Once deceased, it is the common custom to be cremated but there is a scarcity of crematoriums within the city. I chose this site with the proposition of creating a crematorium because it is surrounded by both nature and mountains, adding a spiritual and religious feel. Not only does it dignify the cremation but it adds a sense of return and rebirth for those who have passed and for their families.

As I grew older, my thoughts about death deepened. I began to worry, have reflections, and feel the heavy burden of emotions that come with parting with loved ones and attending funerals. In those moments of separation, I felt like something had left my heart and left a gaping hole. We live and grow through loss and continue to live on and meet new people. All of this made me think about the importance of karma due to the cyclical nature of life. Therefore this is an architectural interpretation of a crematorium, and as you pass through the seven gates of judgment, I hope that people will become aware of their actions in this current life to gain good karma in the next life.

2. ็ซๆนฏ : Fire hell - King Chogang

Punishes those who stole other peopleโ€™s goods, borrowed them, and did not return them, and those who only liked to receive them

Poop water, lava, and sulfuric acid are boiling in the iron pot in this fire hell.

๋ฐ”๋ฅด๊ฒŒ ๋œ

Those who have not been generous or

in their lives, who have not given food to the hungry, go here. It is a hell where you have to walk barefoot endlessly on a mountain full of blades.

49 Jae :

According to Buddhist scriptures, there are four categories of a personโ€™s existence: โ€˜Sang-yuโ€™: present life, โ€˜Sa-yuโ€™: life after death, โ€˜Bonyuโ€™: the period between life and death, and โ€˜Jung-yuโ€™: death to the next life.

They usually judge criminals who commit fraud related to the economy.

The sinner is tied to a mold and a saw is used to inflict pain on the body.

The normal period of the fourth โ€œJung-yuโ€ is 49 days. In other words, after a person dies, in general, in 49 days, โ€œJung-yuโ€ ends and the next life is determined. Therefore, on the 48th day before the next life is decided, there 49 days to pray for the soulโ€™s repose with all your heart.

3. ๅฏ’ๆฐท : Hanbing hell - King Songje

Those who disturb the family or are not filial, or those who make the other people feel lonely and freeze their hearts, fall into a hell of ice.

The sinner trapped here freezes all over and breaks into pieces.

This is where people who commit violent crimes such as murder and robbery come.

A swarm of vipers falls into a crowded hole and bites the whole body.

5. ๆ‹”่ˆŒ : Disclose hell - The King of The Underworld

Hell where a man who has sinned by words dies. A broad piece of shovel-shaped iron causes pain to grind your tongue.

4. ๅŠๆจน : Gumsu hell - King Songje

A man who has sinned profanely, unfaithful, and mercilessly falls

The fruit of the red sweet hot iron runs and suffers from stabbing all over the body in the tree forest with the leaves of the knife.

In 2022, a new administration was replaced, and the office of the South Korean president was relocated from Gwanghwamun to Yongsan. All administrations had attempted to relocate the Blue House, but it has never been done before properly, so the relocation of the office was always postponed, however this time it finally moved. It previously stood right behind Gyeongbokgung Palace, a historical palace in Korea, and was in a natural area because it was surrounded by mountains. Additionally, the surrounding buildings had 10 floors or less, so there was a clear view of the scenery.

31 KARMA - DEATH

Life is interpreted as a cycle : When 365 days of the year pass and the next year comes, most people perceive that โ€˜time has passedโ€™ from a Western perspective. From an oriental point of view, it is said that it recognizes that time has returned. Therefore, in Korean culture, we believe that life returns even after death, and through โ€œ49jae,โ€ we look back on our lives and realize how we will live our next lives.

Have you ever thought of the things that are most familiar to us when we create or express creative things, and when we solve design challenges?

Listening to interviews with many architectural masters, film directors, composers, and painters, you will be able to find works that sublimated your emotions and experiences as art. The emotions and experiences we see and feel now become a shining and nostalgic past in the future, so it is worth focusing more on the present. Art is expressed from various angles because everything you see, hear, and feel is subject to interpretation.

There is no right answer in life. Itโ€™s up to us how we feel and how we deliver it.
