Site Analysis

The ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) is a contemporary art museum of UPenn in Philadelphia, and the building is located at the trolley line 36th St exit. Thus, this building can be seen as a link between the private education system and the urban public transportation system. By renovating this building, we can strike at the exacerbating inequality of private university institutions, as well as further occupy the city through the urban transportation network.

The Museo de la Calle (Street Museum) is a project initiated in the 20th century by Colombian artists. Artists pushed carts into the streets to engage in goods exchange, transforming the street into a museum throughout the process, where everyone could become both a creator and a visitor of art. This form of exchange and exhibition through carts broke through the traditional elitist museum space. Through the city's public transportation network, there's an opportunity for the carts to be further promoted.

ICA Site Map

This project has three systems: Column System, Floor System and Unit System.

The column system, with its slim metal columns, offers a forest-like ambiance for tranquility and nature connection. Besides, it secures carts for resting and funnels rainwater to support plant and human acts.

The Floor System creates a continuous curved surface floor, allowing people to freely push carts on it. Following the undulations of the floor, flat platforms and stairs are created, thereby accommodating more programs.

The unit system includes mobile units, space units, and inflatable space units. This modular approach allows for the dynamic adaptation of the center to meet various needs, ranging from resource storage to creating expansive gathering areas.

This project attempts to criticize totalitarian capitalism by using the integrates the town in the TV series into a single architecture - a self-consistent unity of production is splited into a company and a living area. The whole architecture is surrounded by a mysterious

The light emitted by the sphere becomes the sun and moon for the people in the architecture. The the controllers are never visible, so the sphere is both people's hope and their surveillance. The company glass curtain walls, white walls and convenient elevators. The living areas, on the other hand, are the space and activity galore, and the enjoyment of the goods produced by the company. The experience in they actually complement each other and are controlled by a set of behind-the-scenes production and inhabitants thus become voluntary prisoners of the architecture.

In the TV series, after the severance procedure is performed, the memories would be separated by the chip in the brain, splitting into two personalities: the innie and the outie. outie is the original personality, and the innie personality is the newly split one, which can only exist in the building of the Lumon -The capital that controls the town. Although Lumon uses many methods to discipline people, this management model has its own endogenous contradictions, so the control is not sustainable.

Conceptual Sketch

With the urbanization of Shenzhen, the government has expanded the area of the city by reclamation. But the massive excavation has caused landscape and ecological damage. Antuo Hill is one of the stone quarries. The unique cut slope is both a distinctive feature of the site and a scar left by the city's development. If the parallel lines in the conceptual sketch represent modernism, then the natural traces of pigment flowing down are the possible exodus of modernity.
