PARAMETRIC MODEL Building the box geometry in Revit requires some thought. Instead of translating the box geometry into a series of tilted walls, we created a composite model using the conceptual mass tool in Revit. We then created the walls off of the planes of these masses so if we change the box geometry in the composite model, the walls will automatically update. This ‘smart model’ will save time in the design development phase since we are utilizing the power of parametric modeling. The box geometry in the adjacent models are color coded. Orange denotes the classrooms, blue are the labs, cyan is the office box and grey denotes the service areas. Stairs, openings between floors, interior walls and ceilings are all defined by the box geometry. The model can be exported into other software for energy modeling, environmental modeling and animations. As we develop the experiment zones in the next phase, new geometric algorithms will be overlaid to provide definition to those areas.

EXPERIMENT ZONES

The modular plan provides maximum flexibility for future expansion in the sciences. The lab module and the classroom module are identical. As the science program expands, the classrooms on the south side of the building can be transformed into lab spaces. Infrastructure has been provided for the future transformation on both floors. The initial planning includes three (3) general chemistry labs and (1) organic chemistry lab on the second floor and (2) physical science labs on the ground floor. The prep rooms are stacked and are accessed from the labs via a secure corridor. There are tiered classrooms stacked on the east side of the building and each connects to the secure prep room corridor. Each of these classrooms has a lab bench at the teaching wall. The tiered classroom on the ground floor is for physical sciences and the tiered classroom on the second floor is for chemistry. A third tiered classroom is located on the ground floor as an interdisciplinary classroom and planned for public use. It is a double volume space with direct access to the exterior and restrooms. This lecture room is accessed from an exterior lobby with light wells cut through the building allowing natural light to penetrate this area during the day and provides dramatic lighting at night. Higher Education has been trending towards more collaborative and interdisciplinary learning. Learning occurs everywhere on campus not just in the classroom. The new Math/Science + Social Science building fosters interdisciplinary communication by creating intersections between formal and informal learning environments. The design of the building makes the wonders and perceptions of Math/Science + Social Science visible. The building is an apparatus that demonstrates some the theories of the programs taught within. Experiment Zones are identified both inside and at the exterior of the building. These are places for demonstration. The building is an apparatus or armature to ‘display’ an effect that the student can visualize and calculate OUTSIDE the formal classroom. We asked many questions and will study and develop responses in more detail during the design development phase of the project: What if..? the building materials demonstrated conductivity and oxidation? What if..? the building form demonstrated a solstice event or a daily analemma? What if...? a portion of the building demonstrated Foucault’s pendulum or a camera obscura. The form of the building is driven by the programs contained with in it. Many cultures over time used different methods to track time. What if...? these could be articulated within the building and used for study in Social Sciences?
