Letter from the Publishers Each month it is our goal and honor to bring you stories and photos that will enhance your experiences of riding in the wind. We enjoy entertaining and informing the motorcycle community with stories, rallies, and events from around the state. Some months we receive articles from one area, and not the others, but all in all we strive to bring you articles from every area that has a motorcycle community. Our national coverage is brought to you by fellow enthusiasts, companies, and organizations from around the nation, as part of an effort to keep you informed. We have EXCLUSIVE publishing privileges with some of these writers, and companies so you will not find any other place to read about some of our informative stories. We would like to remind everyone of the dedication and hard work of our team, and because of their collective efforts, we are able to keep this magazine available in print, and on line. But in order to keep it FREE to you, we depend on the advertisers featured in the pages of this publication. So we are asking everyone reading this to please make an effort to support these businesses by shopping with these businesses, and attending the benefits, rallies, and bike nights that are available to you. Also, remember there will always be the “wannabes” out there that will try to undermine our efforts, or think they can also be “publishers” and do it better. Sometimes it is done through deceit, intimidation, and lack of integrity by them. In closing, it is just a simple warning to our loyal readers, and advertisers to beware of these “wolves in sheep’s clothing”. Thank you to all for your support. Thunder Roads is synonymous with bikers, and we aren’t going anywhere!! Twenty years strong in a nationwide network, and looking forward to many more years! Until next… time remember where there are bikes there is going to be thunder!
Andrew and Renee R.I.P. to all our brothers and sisters who lost the ride.

In case you haven’t heard, there is an awesome rally coming to Louisiana in September. The 1st annual Louisiana Rumble rally is September 21st, through the 24th. If you liked the old Sandy Hook Rallies, you are going to love this rally. Affordably priced and includes some biker games new to the rally seen too. The cover was photographed by Ms. Veronica Clark and was taken out on a scenic highway with over 70 bikes showing up to do the shoot. If you haven’t heard about the rally (maybe you been secluded in the woods), please see page 25 for details about the event. With the help of many friends, the cover shoot was a great success. Thank you to everyone who rode out and helped! Photographer: Veronica Clark Photography Models: Courtney Carter & Tonya Smith Indian Motorcycle courtesy of Loewer Powersports

Proposed 2018 Renewable Fuel Obligations Released Total volume slightly smaller than 2017
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The proposed 2018 Renewable Fuel Standard volume requirements announced Wednesday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show a slight reduction from the 2017 obligations but do not reflect the agency’s promise to listen to consumers, who have registered a low demand for higher ethanol blends, the American Motorcyclist Association reports. The EPA’s proposed Renewable Volume Obligations call for 19.24 billion gallons of biofuel for 2018, down less than 1 percent from 19.28 billion gallons this year. “We are encouraged that the EPA is not proposing another increase in ethanol mandates,” said Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations. “But we would prefer that the agency recognize what America’s marketplace is saying: ‘Consumers don’t want higher-ethanol fuel blends.’” Of the 19.24 billion gallons of biofuels proposed
for 2018, 15 billion gallons would be conventional renewables, primarily corn ethanol, with lesser amounts of conventional biodiesel and renewable diesel, according to the EPA. The agency said the “volume of ethanol that can be consumed as E10 in 2018 is projected to be 14.29 billion gallons.” The AMA opposes any increase in the Renewable Volume Obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard and would prefer a much larger reduction because higher ethanol mandates force greater amounts of high-ethanol fuel, such as E15, into the marketplace. An increase in the supply of E15 can lead to more inadvertent misfuelling -- caused by blender pumps and confusing pump labels -- by motorcyclists. E15 fuel is a blend of 85 percent gasoline and 15 percent ethanol and represents a 50 percent increase in ethanol over the common E10 blend
most Americans currently use in their vehicles. None of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles in use in the United States is approved by the EPA to operate on ethanol blends higher than 10 percent. Using higher-ethanol blends in those vehicles is illegal and may cause engine and fuel system damage and void the manufacturer’s warranty. The AMA also is concerned the increased reliance on corn ethanol could further reduce the amount of E0 fuel available. Since the distribution network for E15 and E85 is limited, fuel producers may be forced to reduce E0 output to stay within the EPA’s rule. “It is clear that the Renewable Fuel Standard has been broken for years and Congress needs to reform the law to protect motorcyclists and the millions of consumers who do not want higher ethanol blends,” Allard said.

PATRIOTS CORNER The opinion in this article does not necessarily represent Thunder Roads Magazine or its staff. This is mainly my opinion and of course those that agree with me.
I’ve been going to the VA for all my Doctor needs and there is one thing I’ve learned and that is, the pharmaceutical companies do not support our troops: let me explain. I had a close friend who flew over Japan after we dropped the big one to survey the damage. He did his service, and flew in the war, and when he returned, he would go to the VA for his medical needs as he and every vet are promised when they join the military. Somehow for all he did for our country to protect America he was told the medicine was too expensive. Even the pharmaceutical companies turned him down for help. It wasn’t too expensive for this man to put his life on the line in Japan, though now was it? I too have been told that certain meds are too expensive but this is not about me. We have corrupt politicians and not only are they getting pharmaceutical money but they get the best healthcare even better than the troops that keep their jobs safe Now the VA has some issues but that’s for another article. I’m not sure how, but attention needs to be raised to get our vets access to newer and better meds. I have been on meds from the VA but none of them are of today’s quality. Think about this, the corrupt politicians get kickbacks; Pharmaceutical companies make billions in profit a year. Billions a year in the kickbacks to politicians and turn their backs on Veterans. And to our vets; let’s stop protecting those who do not support our veterans. We all know that won’t happen because most vets have honor.
8
The average person doesn’t even think about our troops. As I am writing this article a friend came up to me and informed me of a Vietnam Veteran that the VA is refusing to continue his health care. . I’m not sure how to get Americans behind our troops just short of having a war on American soil. As for some liberals and the media, it’s a lost cause ……… American Patriot, American Veteran Benton Lovoi Jr.

DAN OWENBURG
BIKE OF THE MONTH BY: JENNIFER DUGAN
This bike is owned and raced by a man whom we all know as Juiceman. Juice races this particular bike in the Super Comp class and at press release, was holding tall in fifth place against racers like Billy Doherty and Keith Richner. The frame is a 2006 Schultz & Reeves chromoly frame which could’ve been found on display for many years in an automotive shop. Used as a sales gimmick, a man from Milwaukee that had retired from the Harley Davidson main plant saw the beauty in her bones and brought her home with him. He had good intentions of racing her, but as the years went by his racing career went into a different direction. That’s when Juiceman from Houma LA saw the value and beauty in her too, and made her what she is today. We will start with the S & S super stock 5 in 1 transmission case with Baker gears, with a right side drive back cut by ANDREW’S, followed by MCI bandit lock up clutch with a4 inch belt drive and open primary. Why all that trash you
ask? To grab the gears of the beast that pushes it. This girl is equipped with a 113 engine that’s lightened, balanced, and blue printed. Bored out at 4.065, stroked at 4.375 and a cam lift off 640 pushing a compression of 14:1. The pistons ate Axtell lightened and balanced by Dark Horse. With Screaming Eagle MVA heads by Zippers Performance, ported and polished with a 20 degree cut for the 14:1 pop up pistons. This bike peaks worth a175 horse powers, and 7000 RPM’s. None of this would have been possible for Juiceman without the support and encouragement from his fans, family, and brothers. But Juice would like to say thank you to his partner and brother Edgar “Snookie” Feinburg MD. Your support, encouragement and attending every race is greatly appreciated not only by Juice himself but fans like me that love to watch him race.

People have been working hard behind the scenes to set up a kick-ass rally!
Work being done on the stage and “Main Street” VIP RV sites. “Main Street” will be a non-stop party spot. VIP sites have, not only the space in front of the camper, but also a 20’ wide concrete section under the pavilion on the main parade route. You can use this space to set up your party as you’d like. Examples of what some have done in this setup include: special lighting, sound systems, dance poles, small pools, bar setups, portable hot tubs, body shot tables, and fog machines. Everyone comes to party on Main Street. Emcee Rodney Bogart has added some great bands: Ampersand, Blizzard of Ozz, Roadhouse Atlanta. More bands to come. Working with some awesome vendors that will be offering tattoos, screen printing, adult novelties, food and drinks and more. If you have a favorite vendor that you’d like to see there, have them check out the vendor application on the website. Save $20 off of admission and reserve your RV site by preregistering now!

BULLET POINTS PROFICIENCY
BY: BRODY KENNEN
If you are willing to learn, you will learn every single day of your life. If you are analytical, you will learn to tell the difference between what is fraud and what is truth. Unfortunately, not everybody is so keen on conscious learning throughout their lifetime. We see this if you were to set down a firearm on the table in front of someone like myself and someone who is wholeheartedly anti-firearms. Quite a few of the latter will be frozen solid with fear of what is nothing more than an inanimate object, and this is common knowledge. But, there is something about this reaction that is somewhat disingenuous. The Anti-Firearms Coalition claim to be “anti-gun”; motioning to strike down ownership of certain firearms and accessories to American civilians. They attempt to revamp the historic Assault Weapons Ban with broader strokes, and purposefully spread misinformation regarding private firearms sales and gun shows has been attempted. The information is spread to these groups’ followers; most of which don’t have any understanding of proper firearms handling to begin with. Their experience with firearms is via Hollywood. As an example, most won’t understand how much in training Keanu Reeves put into his action-thrillers. They don’t have any concept of training. That, in my opinion, is the fallacy of being “anti-gun”. Those people, who claim to want to remove firearms from the fabric of American culture itself, aren’t truly anti-gun. They want someone to be armed. The issue with their mindset is based entirely around their own drive to accomplish day-to-day tasks. They need to teach themselves about firearms, cross-reference source material to make sure that material is correct and relevant, and become proficient. If they ask questions, they will grow their own knowledge pool. And, I have said it before. They want a “good guy” with a gun to be there for them. The only problem with their mindset is, with the appropriate training and armament, that “good guy” could be them. Due to this assessment, it is in my opinion that there is no such thing as an “anti-gun” member of our society. There are, simply, people who are ignorant of the realities of the firearms culture in America and those who wish to have their will forced on others. The problem with the latter is that they are having a hard time coming to terms with who they want to be holding all the firearms. They don’t trust civilians with firearms, they are confused about what they want law enforcement to do and they have no clue how the military will force compliance. It is critical that those who can teach about firearms and the rules of firearms safety do so. If anybody shows interest, take them shooting and talk to them about the importance of self-defense and the defense of their loved ones. The thing that everyone does see, on the news, is the barbarism of some within humanity. Teach them that the United States is one of the few places, in the whole world, where they stand a chance against it; if they are willing to learn about the tools available to them. If you are interested in learning, then ask someone to help you out. Search for all your information on pro-firearms websites instead of sites who regularly post anti-firearms media. Do not rely on people who are “anti-gun” to teach you about said firearms. They probably don’t work around firearms and that means they lack first-hand experience on the subject that they are trying to cover. Search for your information through sources, who do work in the field, and then cross-reference those sources for other points-of-view.
It is critical to take in information; no matter what side of the line you are on. Do your due diligence and I promise you; taking in new information will only be a benefit to you. Then, get out there and become proficient with firearms. After all, it is a hell of a lot of fun. LEGISLATION ALERT Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act (SHARE Act – H.R. #TBA, Duncan S.C.) – Features many pro-firearms related material including a “Hearing Protection Act” section for deregulation of suppressors. Silencers Helping Us Save Hearing (SHUSH Act – H.R. 3139 & S.1505) – Removes suppressors from the NFA entirely and making them “accessories” with no registration or background checks needed. It goes without saying that you should get in contact with your local legislators and urge them to support these bills. It is in all our interests to fight back, step-by-step, and repeal legislation that has been put in place – curtailing firearms and firearms accessory ownership. Send your local representatives emails today! If you would like to see more firearms related material, then visit www. thearmednovelist.com.Questions or comments? LIPSTICK RIDER “TALIA” DJ, ORGANIZER, ADVOCATE AND PINK LADY
Summer time is here!!!! Summertime is here and it is getting hot outside! It’s time to get out and enjoy this weather (when it isn’t raining here in south Louisiana) and to enjoy your ride! Even if you catch a little rain, any day is a good day for a ride… And our next little hot Lipstick Rider comes to us from a lil area we call the West Bank. This is where she works at the hospital by day in the lab and works with her husband DJ LP spinning music and Karaoke on weekend nights all over the West Bank. When Talia Parks of Marrero, isn’t working or working (lol) she plays a mean game of pool with her team called the Pink Ladies. They are so good that they are going to Vegas this August for the second time to compete! So, from me and everyone at Thunder Roads we wish you and your team the best of luck in Vegas! This woman must rarely sleep, because when she isn’t busy working, spinning music or shooting a mean game of pool for her team, she likes to help people. She organizes poker runs and benefits for local charities on the West Bank. Whenever she can, her and her husband take off on their 2008 Softail Heritage, taking part in poker runs, benefits and bike nights, just to be on the bike… That’s what I call a Lipstick Rider!!! So, there is Talia’s story, tell me yours! If you would like to be featured as one of our bad ass lipstick riders, just send me your favorite pictures of you and your bike and a story to dinadupre@yahoo.com and each month we showcase a bad ass Lipstick Rider! Keeping the Rubber Side Down By: Nate T.
The other day, I was fiddling around doing maintenance at the house. You know, washing things, greasing stuff, changing oil, checking tires. About the time I was feeling disgusted that I had to replace the front tires of my truck, the thought crossed my mind that it would be as good a time as any to share some of my thoughts and opinions about tires on our two-wheeled machines. You see, over my years of riding, I’ve come to the conclusion that there are a lot of motorcycle tires out there that aren’t getting the attention they deserve. After all, when we’re up on two wheels, we only have… well, two tires under us. There is a lot of thought that goes into both our sickles and the rubber we put under them though. That thought takes into account all kinds of physics and engineering hand waving and witchdoctory so we can get the thrill we’re looking for. With each of those wheels only having a contact patch about the size of your fist, it doesn’t take much for you and or your passenger to make the evening news if you catch my drift. I suppose the first thing I should throw out there is what to look for on the rubber side of your scooter. I think sometimes tires are the most forgettable part of a motorcycle. They’re not real pretty, difficult to get a good look at, and only really demand attention when things go real sideways. Don’t worry; we’re going to change that for y’all. I know that everyone reading this always looks over their machine both after and before your ride (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). Don’t worry; it’s pretty easy to get into the habit to do this while performing whatever cleaning ritual you might have. You know, the ritual that has the neighbors thinking you’re responsible for all this rain. So all you have to do is add a few things to that list and you’re good to go. I usually start with checking and adjusting air pressure with a good quality gauge. I like the dial ones, but the MoCo sells a pretty nice slide-type. This should be done while the tires are cold…relatively speaking. This is because the heat of running the tire will make that pressure go up 10 percent or more, which you don’t want. I’m of the opinion that this should be done before every ride…yes, I’m serious. Beyond that, I even go so far as to check them about every other pit stop on the longer rides. I don’t do this just because though. There is a method to my madness (at least the voices tell me there is). In order for the bike to perform how it is supposed to, the eggheads that designed the machine and tires have a certain air pressure in mind…and put that handy-dandy information right in that service manual that you have all wisely purchased. This isn’t the pressure on the sidewall either (no really, it’s not). The number on the sidewall is the maximum operating pressure and is usually overinflated compared to what’s found in the manual. Over inflation shrinks the size of your contact patch (less traction), makes for a rougher ride, and overheats tires (think boom). On the other hand, while under inflation can also overheat tires (boom again), it also can cause unstable handling, and uneven wear such as cupping (all assorted flavors of bad)…which brings me to my next point of interest.
Next, I like to make sure that the tires and wheels are in good condition. So, after you’ve given everything a good washing, inspect the tires and rims for any changes that are out of the ordinary. You’re either going to want to roll the bike back and forth or put it up on a stand so you can check out every side. Don’t leave anything to chance. Dents, cracks or bends in the rims could be signs of trouble while cuts, punctures, weather checking, and uneven wear aren’t good things for the rubber. If all of a sudden you notice a new rub, scuff, or some sort of weird wear on tire or rim, find out what’s causing it before you roll on down the road again. You also want to check your manual or tire manufacturer to see how the wear bars work and when the tire is worn out (the dead horse rides again). Yes, this takes a little extra time. I’m telling you it’s worth it. If one tire leaves the building while clipping down the tarmac, I doubt very many of you are avid unicyclists. If both tires decide to take a vacation…well, you don’t have a whole ton of options left and that ground comes up pretty quick. When it comes down to it, the ugly truth is that some riders don’t properly maintain their tires because of laziness. They say it takes too long, is too difficult, or isn’t necessary. They’re flat wrong. There’s no reason not to check something that can end you while spending hours polishing chrome doodads and other shiny wahoozits. The rest that don’t are inexperienced riders and just don’t know that tire maintenance is even a thing. They need to be taught the right way to do things. For those of us that know, it’s our responsibility to make that happen. Maybe this’ll get under some people’s skin a bit, but honestly, I don’t care. Too many are lost to the mistake of a cager, gear jammer not paying attention, or a deer chasing tail. I mean, stuff happens, but there’s no reason to lose any more riders for something that’s pretty preventable. Until next time, keep it between the lines and shiny side up. Shovel on.

GLENN MCGOVERN THE MOST IMPORTANT MOTORCYCLE ACCESSORY
By: Glenn C. McGovern, Motorcycle Attorney and MSF Instructor Email: gcmcg@mac.com I had the privilege to qualify and race two times in the A.M.A. National at Loretta Lynn’s Amateur Nationals Motocross Championships. Usually over 1200 riders try to qualify in each class, but they only have 40 positions on the starting gate at Loretta Lynn’s annual race. The best of the best in the country race there. Usually the riders have the latest equipment. But one year I remember they had a kid show up that stood out from the rest. His riding gear was torn. His gloves had holes in them. His motorcycle was a 20-year-old two-stroke 125 cc Kawasaki. The bike looked like he pulled it out a dumpster. The plastic was faded and cracked. The seat had tears and you could see the foam sticking out. Yet when the gate dropped, the rider was in the top three riders and made the podium the first moto. All the riders had ability or they would have not made it to Loretta Lynn’s. But this rider was different as he had tremendous skill and talent. The most important part of any motorcycle is not the motorcycle--It is the rider. Anyone who has raced motorcycles knows this well. The rider is by far the most important part of our own motorcycle. We as riders, are the most important factor in motorcycle performance and safety. So, what are you doing to make yourself a better rider? The slogan, “Use it or lose it”, applies to motorcycle skill retention. You should never stop practicing. You should never stop learning. Not only learning new skills is fun but it could save your life in the street. It is a hostile environment for motorcyclists. Accidents are at an all-time high. Distracted drivers and crashes caused by drivers on cell phone texting or using aps have increased dramatically. It has never been more important to keep up your motorcycle skills. You need to do more than know how to do an emergency swerve and implement your S.E.E. strategy on every motorcycle ride. (If you don’t know how to do an emergency swerve or what a S.E.E. strategy isyou need to go enroll in a Motorcycle Safety Foundation MSF or Total Control rider instruction school immediately!) Motorcycling operation is a complicated science. It is the sciences of physics and engineering. Motorcycles are wonderful complex devices! They are magical! You can do amazing things on a motorcycle track. Learning new skills is really fun! Here are a few suggestions. Pick one you enjoy and start from there. Have fun and learn! 1. Take a MSF Dirt Bike Course and learn to ride in the dirt. One of the safest and best ways to learn how to deal with counter steering, (If you don’t know what that is please get to a motorcycle course immediately!), braking, cornering and handling obstacles. You will make mistakes but falling down in the dirt is a lot better than falling down at higher speeds on an asphalt highway. (Just ask anyone with scars at your next Harley dealer open house bike night about road rash—not fun and very painful.) For a site near you go to http://www.dirtbikeschool.org. If you can’t go to a school, partner with a dirt biker as ask to go out with him or her to learn and ride trails or practice on track days at a local motocross track. 2. Take a MSF Basic Course Taking a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course is one of the most important things you can do to improve your chances of not getting hurt in a motorcycle crash. I can’t tell you how many clients I have had, not take the MSF Basic Course, get in a crash, and then go back, pass it, and always thank me for suggesting it. They always state they had fun doing it and learned a lot. No one has ever taken a MSF Course and told me it was a waste of time or that is was not fun! This is not expensive. The State of Louisiana will loan you a 250 cc motorcycle and teach you with certified MSF instructors for $100. (Go to www.lsp.org) What a deal! You get to practice all your street survival skills in a small group of 6-12 students with a certified instructor for each 6 students. You will get personal attention and learn the skills you need to survive on the street. There are private MSF courses too at slightly higher but reasonable costs. You can learn on a Grom or Ninja 300 at NOLA Motorsports fantastic facility in Avondale, La. Then you can practice on the go-karts tracks on Wednesdays 1-4 pm before hitting the street! It does not get more fun than this! Go to https://nolariding.com. Some of the Harley Davidson dealers also offer MSF Basic Rider courses on 500 cc Harley Davidson motorcycles. Some offer reduced tuitions for new riders for the course. (Go to http://www.hammondharleydavidson.com or in New Orleans area http://www.neworleansh-d.com/with-us-you-can--learn-to-ride or in Alexandria http://www.renegadehd.com/ride-better--learn-to-ride. Also check out this website that lists several MSF Courses throughout the state of Louisiana at http:// www.motorcycledrivingschoolcafe.com/motorcycle-riding-schools-learn-ride-
motorcycle-louisiana/. 3. Take a MSF Intermediate or Advance Course The State of Louisiana offers not only basic but MSF Intermediate and Advance motorcycle instruction courses for some very reasonable costs. These are information packed and fun. Your skill levels will increase. The intermediate and advance MSF course deal with advance braking and cornering techniques. Go to www.lsp.org to sign up and for more information. You can use your own bike for these courses. These are great to take after the MSF Basic to maintain your skills. If you don’t practice, you will lose your skills over time. 4. Sign up for a Track Day at your local road-racing track Many roadracing track facilities have track days. You can rent safety gear like full leathers and boots at many facilities like NOLA Motorsports in Avondale, La. This is really fun but many drivers are intimidated since they have never been on a real race track. Have no fear for Sport Bike Track Time is here! (Go to https://sportbiketracktime.com) This is great! They divide the riders into different groups of novice, intermediate and advanced. They offer instruction and break how to safety ride on a track with multiple progressive sessions. Your skills and knowledge build with each exercise and session. This is very safe. (There are no drivers with cell phones to hit you!) It is a good way to push your motorcycle to its limits. Your motorcycle is far more capable than you will probably ever be unless your last name is Rossi, Marquez or Lorenzo (i.e. MotoGP riders of extraordinary skill). You are the weak link and you need to constantly improve your skills. This is a fun and excellent way to do so in a safe format. I am addicted to Track Days at NOLA and am working on my AHRMA racing license. I am building an AHRMA track only bike. You don’t need a race bike to enjoy and learn at Track Days. You can bring any motorcycle. (Even Harleys!) You just need to prepare it with Water Wetter or water instead of slippery anti-freeze in your radiator and tape up your glass and remove the mirrors or breakable glass/plastic stuff that might leave debris on the track if you fall. You don’t even need leathers for the novice track days. You can wear the Joe Rocket full pants with attaching synthetic jackets, full gauntlet gloves and boots or rent full leathers at the track. No excuses! Get out there and have fun. You get used to the high speeds with time and instruction. Then your skills at lower speeds increase. You will become a safer rider and do it while having fun! Track days are not a race. You will be fine. Your skills will increase dramatically. You can do it! The cost is $125-$150 for each track day at most tracks including the valuable instruction. 5. Go to Race School and get a motorcycle race license There are many schools that are one or two days of instruction and you can get your motorcycle race license. AHRMA is an organization that offers vintage road racing. AHRMA has a one day course that you can attend on Friday and race on Saturday and Sunday on a road course! They are offered at some famous race tracks. The cost is reasonable. You can attend the course with a non-vintage motorcycle. But you need a vintage motorcycle to race in AHRMA that is fully prepared. Go to http://www.ahrma.org/ new-racers/fast-safe-roadracing-school/. Pass the class and race the weekend. What a deal. WERA, another race organization also offers similar classes. Go to https://wera.com Conclusion Here are 5 ways to have fun and increase your level of skill on a motorcycle. Increasing your motorcycle skills means you have a better chance of avoiding a crash on the street. You mind and body needs to exercise your motorcycle skills to remain proficient. Recurrent training is necessary. This can be a labor of love. I have made new friends, learned new skills, and I am venturing into new areas of motorcycling I never imagined I would enter. It has been a great adventure! I want each of you to have the same great experiences and enhance your skills.

BIKER NE
“b2v” technology preventing motorcycle accidents
bY: bILL bISH, ncom THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. If you’ve been involved in any kind of accident, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. MILLENNIALS ARE NEGATIVELY IMPACTING MOTORCYCLING U.S. motorcycle sales for Harley-Davidson, which represents about half of America’s big-bike market, were down 3.9% last year, and investment management firm Alliance Bernstein recently downgraded the Motor Company’s rating while citing the millennial generation as a key contributor in the brand’s downturn. “Our data suggests the younger Gen Y population is adopting motorcycling at a far lower rate than prior generations,” AB analyst David Beckel told AOL’s Business Insider. “Gen Y’s are aging into the important ‘pre-family’ cohort of riders and Boomers are increasingly handing over their keys to the smaller Gen X population.” Millennials have surpassed Baby Boomers in numbers to become the largest generation pool in the United States, and these 18 to 35-year-olds grew up during a recession, which has impacted their spending habits. “I think we have got a very significant psychological scar from this great recession,” according to Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger. “One in every five households at the time were severely negatively impacted by that event. And, if you think about the children in that house and how the length and depth of that recession really impacted people, I think you have an entire generation with permanently changed spending habits.” BIKE-TO-VEHICLE (B2V) TECHNOLOGY TO PREVENT MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS Drivers involved in an accident with a motorcycle often claim they didn’t see the bike. Their smaller size, quickness and maneuverability makes motorcycles more difficult to identify in traffic. Autotalks, the world leader in V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication solutions, is launching its bike-tovehicle (B2V) solution, a technology for the prevention of motorcycle accidents. The solution is based on the B2X (Bike-to-Everything) chipset developed by the
Israeli company. Research conducted by Bosch, a leading global supplier of technology and services, finds that motorcycle-to-car communication could prevent almost one third of motorcycle related accidents, which has encouraged the German company to develop what they call a “digital protective shield” for riders. Digital visibility would warn the driver of a car about a motorcycle’s close presence, even when it’s not visible to the human eye. The goal of the new technology is to prevent accidents from occurring, by providing warning notices on dashboards. The data would be exchanged by vehicle transmitters through public WLAN and ITS-G5. Potential hazards and nearby motorcycles would then show up on satellite navigation, including direction of travel, position, speed, acceleration, and vehicle type. Advantages of the Autotalks’ B2V solution include simple integration, low power consumption, the smallest form factor, highest range of operating temperature and smallest physical size, which results in its resistance to the strong vibration and challenging environmental conditions of motorcycles. OREGON ENACTS R-O-W LAW TO PROTECT MOTORCYCLISTS A “Right-of-Way” or R-O-W law has been enacted in Oregon, as House Bill 2598 was signed by Governor Kate Brown on June 20, 2017. The bill also known as the “Milkman Mike Act” or the “Driver Responsibility Bill” will become law on January 1, 2018 and expands the offense of vehicular assault to include contact with motorcycle, motorcycle operator or motorcycle passenger that causes physical injury. “This means that if a reckless driver injures a motorcycle rider or their passenger, the driver can be charged with vehicular assault and will be a Class A Misdemeanor,” reports the Oregon Confederation of Clubs. The punishment can be doing time up to one year in prison and a maximum fine up to a $6,250. “This is a great win for Oregon riders!!,” states the Oregon COC on their website (www.oregoncoc.org). “Now we have something that has some teeth in it to punish drivers who are determined to be ‘reckless’. We have had too many brothers and sisters run down by car drivers getting a ticket for nominal money or no ticket at all. At best they get a slight bump in their insurance rates. And in the case of no ticket, their insurance company never really has a clue they have a high risk client on their hands. “All it took was a sharp attorney (Oregon A.I.M. Attorney Christopher Slater) to do a very simple thing. He had the great idea to look to see if there is existing legislation. He found legislation that covered bicyclists and pedestrians (ORS 811.060). From there it was easy to add a few words…’motorcycle rider and passenger.’ It was so simple it was brilliant. Much thanks to Christopher and his efforts. Many thanks to BikePac of Oregon and ABATE of Oregon who also worked hard to make this bill a reality.
30 Thunder Roads Magazine Louisiana | August 2017 | www.thunderroadslouisiana.com
“And may Milkman Mike rest in peace forever. This legislation is something he worked hard to achieve for many years. He was unable to see it done due to a health issue and we lost him several years ago. Mike was constantly working within the motorcycle rights community. He also worked as the coordinator for the Coalition of Independent Riders (COIR). He spent a great amount of time adding non affiliated and independent riders to his communication roster.” NORTH CAROLINA TO PROVIDE DRIVER INSTRUCTION ON LAW ENFORCEMENT STOPS Similar to a measure recently adopted in Louisiana to teach new licensees how to interact with police during traffic stops, House Bill 21 “Driver Instruction/Law Enforcement Stops” has been approved unanimously by the North Carolina legislature and signed into law by Governor Roy Cooper on July 12, 2017. HB 21 provides that “The Division, in consultation with the State Highway Patrol, the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association, and the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police, shall include in the driver license handbook a description of law enforcement procedures during traffic stops and the actions that a motorist should take during a traffic stop, including appropriate interactions with law enforcement officers.” OHIO ‘DEAD RED’ LAW AMENDED FOR BICYCLES ONLY During a lame-duck legislative session ending last December, the Ohio General Assembly passed House Bill 154, commonly referred to as a “Dead Red” law, allowing all vehicles and bicycles to treat a malfunctioning traffic signal as a stop sign and to proceed through a red light after a reasonable time has elapsed, as long as the intersection is clear and you must yield to oncoming traffic with the right of way. Signed by the governor, the new law was to take effect in March, but an amendment was introduced and fast-tracked as an emergency measure to remove all motor vehicles (cars, trucks and motorcycles) from the law, and House Bill 9 amended the red light section to apply to bicycles only. Under the language of HB 154, if drivers think they have waited long enough at a red light, they can go through it, explained Representative Kyle Koehler (R-Springfield), primary sponsor of the amendment bill HB 9 “To amend section 4511.132 of the Revised Code to specify that the alternative protocol for proceeding into an intersection with malfunctioning traffic lights due to a failure of a vehicle detector applies only to bicycles, and to declare an emergency.” Unlike when a stoplight is out or blinking because of a mechanical failure, there is no way for a driver to know for sure if an otherwise functioning light has been signaled to change, so legislators worried that the law would allow motor vehicle drivers to treat intersections like stop signs. Lawmakers rushed to fix the law, and HB 154 passed both chambers unanimously and was signed into law as an

emergency measure by Gov. John Kasich, taking effect right away. While ABATE of Ohio maintains that all Traffic Control Devices should be in good working order at all times and is working with the Ohio Department of Transportation to report/repair malfunctioning devices (Red Light Hotline (614) 387-0722 or biker. report@dot.state.oh.us), the organization reports that “Legislation granting motorcycles the ability to treat a malfunctioning traffic signal as a stop sign is planned for the future.” Basically, “Dead Red” laws allow a motorcyclist stopped at an intersection who has not been detected by a traffic signal sensor to run the light legally, when done so safely. Currently, 20 states have enacted such laws, varying in specificity from 45 seconds to 3 minutes, or 1-2 cycles of the light, or “when safe”: AR, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MN, MO, NV, NC, OK, OR, NJ, PA, SC, TN, UT, VA, WA, WY. NEW JERSEY RECOGNIZES VETERAN RIDERS On Thursday, June 22, 2017 the New Jersey Senate and the Assembly voted unanimously to pass Senate Bill No. 1750, and Assembly Bill No. 2729, to create a Veteran license plate for motorcycles. This establishes “U.S. VET” plates for any honorably discharged Veteran. There will be an annual $10 charge for these plates and all monies collected will be deposited in a fund to be used by the Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs for the support of programs benefiting New Jersey military veterans. “When the Governor signs this legislation, it will end an over eight year campaign by ABATE for these plates,” announced Frank C. Maimone of ABATE of the Garden State. HAWAII GOVERNOR VETOES BILL FOR MOTORCYCLISTS TO USE SHOULDER LANES Legislation to allow motorcyclists to travel on shoulder lanes in congested traffic passed through the Hawaii legislature but was vetoed by Governor David Ige on July 11. House Bill 727, introduced by Representative Henry
J.C. Aquino (D-Waipahu), passed both the House and Senate with only two ‘No’ votes, and would “authorize the operator of a motorcycle or motor scooter to proceed cautiously upon the shoulder of the roadway, in the same direction at a reduced rate of speed of no more than ten miles per hour” until the adjacent lane cleared. The intent of the measure was to alleviate congestion and reduce the risk of injury or loss of life, but in his veto message, Gov. Ige countered that “There is concern that this will compromise road safety. The shoulder lane is designed to accommodate stopped vehicles and emergency vehicles on highways, and bicycles on arterial roadways. While the intent of the bill is to reduce risk or injury or loss of life, there is concern that allowing shoulder lane use to these types of vehicles will instead create more danger for the operators of these vehicles.” VIETNAM TO BAN MOTORCYCLES IN CAPITAL CITY The city of Hanoi, capital of Vietnam, has over 7.5 million inhabitants, and between them these citizens own more than 5 million motorcycles and half a million cars. In addition to the city progressively developing public transportation and banning certain vehicles from certain locations at certain times to combat congestion and pollution, Hanoi has stated intentions to ban all motorcycles in 2030. INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE BANS COMING FROM EUROPE, ASIA A growing list of countries plan to ban conventional vehicles running on gasoline, diesel or other fossil fuels. Several European and Asian countries have already laid out ambitious plans to eliminate fossil fuel-powered vehicles: - Norway & The Netherlands have designed the most aggressive plans, wanting to switch to electric vehicles by 2025. - India wants to get all of its vehicles switched to battery power by 2030, not only ending the sale of internal combustion vehicles, but will convert or replace all vehicles on the road.
- France announced plans coinciding with the G20 summit to have 80% of its fleet electrified by 2023. - Germany is pushing to end sales of gas and diesel cars by 2030. - China is increasing sales of so-called New Energy Vehicles by putting strict limits on the number of new vehicles that can be registered in major cities, exempting NEV models. Sales of all battery-based vehicles dipped globally in 2016, and in the U.S. sales of hybrids, plug-ins, and BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) collectively accounted for barely 3% of the overall new vehicle market. WHAT IF 10% OF DRIVERS SWITCHED TO MOTORCYCLES? In recognition of Ride to Work Day in June, the Motorcycle Industry Association in the U.K. released figures highlighting the benefits for everyone if just 10% of car drivers made the switch to two wheels -- including a 20% increase in parking spaces, a 40% reduction in road congestion and financial savings from less cars on the road. The figures come from a Belgian study, which modeled traffic for one of Europe’s congested roads and found that if 10% of car drivers swapped four wheels for two, congestion for all road users went down by 40%. If 25% of drivers rode, congestion was completely eliminated. The INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard calculated the cost of congestion to the economy at around £30 billion a year ($39 billion USD) – a figure that would reduce if more people switched to two wheels. Drivers could gain up to the equivalent of four days (32 hours) annually stuck in traffic. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “The most difficult thing is the decision to act. A delightful angelic looking little boy was waiting for his mother outside the ladies room of the gas station. As he stood there, he was approached by a man who asked, “Sonny, can you tell me where the Post Office is?” Little Johnny replied, “Sure! Just go straight down this street two blocks and turn to your right. It’s on the left.” The man thanked the boy kindly, complimented him on how bright he was and said, “I’m the new Pastor in town. If you and your mommy come to church on Sunday, I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.” Little Johnny replied with a chuckle; “You’re shitting me, right? You can’t even find the Post Office.” -------------------------------------------------------------Dearest Dad, I am coming home to get married soon, so get your check book out. I’m in love with a boy who is far away from me. As you know, I am in Australia ... and he lives in Scotland. PASTORS CORNER
Ever notice when you are really in a hurry, that there is always someone in front of you who is not? When I am out riding my motorcycle on a really nice winding road and I want to feel the curves, that is usually when I get behind someone who appears to just be out for a Sunday drive. And of course, for the next 8 miles there are no passing zones. Even when I go to the convince store to get quick cup of coffee. There seems to always be someone that needs their lottery tickets checked. They also need five dollars worth the scratch off’s, but they can’t decide which five of the twenty-five to choose from. I must admit, there are moments where I am not so patient. Those moments where I want to twist the throttle and shoot past the slow poke. Where I want to say, here’s twenty dollars just give them one of each and let me get out of here. The whole time I’m thinking “God why me?” If you have shared the same feelings and maybe even some of the same thoughts. I have something that may help. When I look up and there is someone in front of me, who I just can’t seem to get around, I have a saying that I practice: PRAY FORWARD. PRAY FORWARD, is something that I do every day. When I have someone in front of me, who seems to have been placed there just to get my full attention. I simply PRAY for them. Asking God to meet their needs and even bless them. I must admit this is a learned practice. At first I prayed for them while I was twisting the throttle and blowing past them. But now I just say, God you must have wanted me to pray for these people, there is no other reason for them to be in front of me. So, I pray forward. Have a blessed day, see you in the wind. Remember PRAY FORWARD. Pastor T

ayou Demons first annual “Hangin wit Heroes” 2017 was their most recent charitable cause, which brought them to the National World War II Museum with a group of WWII and other veterans. Club members escorted the vets from Brookdale Senior Living of Lafayette to New Orleans, where they accompanied the veterans through the exhibit hearing their firsthand accounts of the veterans’ service in the war. The veterans were also treated to a catered luncheon including a performance by The Victory Belles, during which two of the accompanying WWII veterans received special recognition by the performers for their service. Bayou Demons RC Lafayette would like to extend special thanks to: Brookdale Lafayette Senior living, Liberty Brigade, Dave’s gun shop, Phillyana cheese steaks, and paintings by Kusaka for helping make this great event possible.

BY: RENEE
f you haven’t been to one of the Lamplighters bike nights, then you are missing out on some of the best food in Lake Charles, not to mention, some great live bands- and all for free! The Lamplighter hosts a Bike Night every Thursday, and once a month on the third Saturday of each month. July 15th happened to be a birthday party in my honor as well. I would like to introduce you to some of the area’s finest rock bands. The first set was an acoustic impromptu performance with Happy, Ryan, and Ryan, ha-ha. They entertained us for an hour while the bands set up and they sure did an awesome job! Then “The Cards,” a band that formed in late 2016, played some awesome party music. From classic rock to modern hits, as well as their own originals. You can find them on Face Book under The Cards Band. For booking information, please call Logan Soileau @ 337-652-9307. Thunder Roads Louisiana Magazine is happy to show our support and to give them exposure within the biker community.
T GREY WOLFZ BAND
he next act to entertain the house is a local favorite. Grey Wolfz band wants you to “get your howl on” and come jam with them! They sang Happy Birthday to me like no one has ever done before! They played some really old school classic rock and some alternative rock as well. Lead singer “Preacher” told me they were available for bike nights and any other events where you would like to have live music. For booking contact Grey Wolfz @ 337-802-0155 or greywolfz2014@gmail.com. Thank you to all who came out, and especially to all the talented musicians that donated their time to serenade me for my birthday party! I hope you all can get a chance to check out both of these bands. Tell your favorite watering hole they need to book both bands! A very special thank you to all of my special friends that made the trip up for this awesome party: Kaleb, Ryan, Cali, Heather, and Angie! Most of all thank you to Becky and John for hosting my party and making it one of the most special days I’ve had in a very long time!
