Official airline of the MOBO Awards easyJet, the UK’s largest airline has signed a sponsorship deal to become the exclusive airline partner to the MOBO organisation, Europe’s leading urban music brand, for the next three years. As part of the partnership, easyJet flew the UK’s hottest boy band, JLS, to Liverpool Airport from London Gatwick on a special chartered flight. The boys then took their place in the star studded line-up of artists and performers at this year’s awards ceremony, which took place last month at the Echo Arena Liverpool. The 17th annual MOBO Awards saw some of the biggest names in urban music from the UK and beyond take to the stage, making it one of the biggest nights in the diary for Liverpool and beyond. Paul Simmons, UK Commercial Manager at easyJet commented: "We’re delighted that easyJet has been selected as the airline of choice for the MOBO Awards and thrilled to be flying JLS to the event. “Liverpool was one of the first easyJet bases that we launched back in 1997 and we’re fully committed to the city and developing the opportunities this presents us. “The awards ceremony promises to be a spectacular showcase of international talent and diversity and we’re extremely happy that easyJet is playing a part in bringing the event to Liverpool, a city with such a rich musical heritage and helping to make it a success.”

A Note from our Award winning Editor... The end of the year is always a time for reflection of the year gone by. It has been a fantastic year for Lifestyle magazine, with the Awards, our 4th birthday party and most recently Liverpool Fashion Week which has been the most successful fashion event in the city to date. December is filled with excitement for me as I love preparing the house for the Christmas holidays with the children. We batten down the hatches, immerse ourselves with cosy winter comforts, stock up on logs for the fire and spend two weeks at home recharging the batteries. This month, the magazine is filled with seasonal messages, Christmas offers and our recommendations for the pantomime. In particular we are looking forward to those out of town, St Helens Theatre and The Brindley who often get forgotten for the larger venues. These regional theatres offer fantastic facilities for the community and a lot of hard work goes into creating a great entertainment show for all the family so please go along and support them. We chat to some great people as always. The Christians are playing in Liverpool this month, ahead of their private show they are putting on at the Lifestyle Awards in February and Liverpool favourite Pete Price shares his Christmas panto stories with us. Settle down with a cuppa and relax with Lifestyle Monthly magazine. Number one and going strong.

HAIRDRESSING STUDENT PAIGE THROUGH TO NATIONAL FINALS OF WORLDSKILLS Knowsley Community College student, Paige Senel Sumner, recently came first at the regional finals of the Worldskills event hosted at St Helens College - winning North West Advanced Hairdresser. Paige completed her NVQ Level3 Hairdressing last year, rounding the year off by coming second in the end of year College show. She has now progressed onto a Beauty course at the College to broaden her skill base. This really is the start to an exciting career for Paige, who also works part-time at Hairport 8 in Page Moss. She commented that she really wouldn't have achieved all this without the help and support of her tutors.

OLYMPICS CONSTRUCTION FIRM ON BOARD FOR EXHIBITION CENTRE LIVERPOOL MOVES to develop a world-class exhibition and events facility on Liverpool’s waterfront have taken a significant step forward. Following a competitive tender, ISG has been granted the contract to deliver the £40 million development at Kings Dock, which will form part of ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena. International construction services company ISG was responsible for the construction of the 6,000 seat London 2012 Velodrome. It was the first venue on the Olympic Park to be completed and became one of the most iconic facilities of the 2012 Games. The appointment of ISG means Liverpool can drive forward with its plans to deliver the 8,100 sqm, three-hall Exhibition Centre Liverpool (ECL), along with an integrated hotel which will be developed by the city council. Construction of the new facilities is set to commence in autumn 2013, with a scheduled completion date of spring 2015.

CHARITY LAUNCHES APPEAL FOR FOSTER FAMILIES IN MERSEYSIDE Action for Children has launched a new fostering service aimed at children from the North West who have encountered severe disruption, abuse or trauma in their young lives. The leading charity is now encouraging people in Merseyside to consider becoming carers . Transform is a therapeutic foster placement programme that gives children stability in their lives, helping them to grow and develop in a family home environment. And with an estimated shortage of 1,200 carers in the North West, the leading charity is urgently calling for Merseyside locals to consider joining the programme. Sue Atkinson-Millmoor, children’s placements manager at Action for Children, said: “Transform uses a range of therapeutic techniques to help children who have experiencedsevere disruption in their young lives to heal. The aim of this type of foster care is to give children who often display significant and challenging behaviour the support they need to fulfill their potential.” Each child in a Transform placement will have a weekly therapy session with a trauma and attachment specialist. Foster carers will play a key role in this therapy, and will receive ongoing training and coaching to help them support the child. Figures released earlier this year suggest there is a shortage of nearly 9,000 foster families across the UK. This shortfall means too many children are at risk of not getting the right foster home first time round, which heightens the chances of a fostering breakdown and their return to residential care. To find out more about becoming a foster carer please contact Action for Children on 0845 200 5162 or visit our website at: www.actionforchildren.org.uk/fostering

As panto season grips us, veteran ugly sister Pete Price spills the (magic) beans on why it's such a special time for us all

One

time I was with Stan Boardman who always tried to make me late for my show, he was a bugger to work with, always playing practical jokes! He once handcuffed me to the wishing well, he locked me in a caravan as well. I was performing in Rhyl and I had to tear down the A55 speeding, because I was late, I know that is not an excuse. The next minute there is a blue light behind me so I pull over. The copper comes over to my car and tells me to get out, so I did in my full ugly sister costume, bright blue eyeshadow, red lips, you know. He looked at me and said, “Just drive” and I actually got a police escort all the way to the radio station! And of course I did my show in full costume as well.

I used to d read Chri stma died but si nce doing s since my mum part of it, panto and I have be being en doing years now panto for and I can 17 make oth happy at er people Christmas a n d me happ now that y.It's ma I have 2 sh a very busy time fo kes r me, ows a da y and the hour radio n my 4 phone in so I have bed in my to ha dressing ro om to catc ve a h up on sleep whe n I can.

and a baddie was clinging onto her foot. She said to the audience, “How shall I kill him” and someone shouted. “Sing to him”. Cilla Black is an absolute legend, people came from all over the world when she was in panto in Liverpool. she is the only one is has got a standing ovation in panto, that never happens usually. she sang “You are my World” and all the cast, Les Dennis, Nick Pickard, Jen Ellison, we were all weeping and so was the theatre, it was a very special moment, truly magical. Another funny story was when I was doing panto at New Brighton. All the dwarfs had these huge heads on them and they came out in a line, Dopey fell right off the stage into the orchestra pit, I think the head saved him.

There are so many funny moments I recall, here are a few;

My problem is that I am rubbish at learning lines, even if I get the script in July, and it always changes, I still have trouble remembering my lines. I was Buttons once and went on stage and did my whole speech from Aladdin the year before.

Chrissie Rock was backstage, she was dressed as a fairy and came onto the stage carrying a take away menu and asking me what I wanted. I turned to her and said, “We’re still on you, know, the curtain is up.” The audience roared. She wished everyone a Merry Christmas and got off stage. Betty Nelson from Bridesworld, a lovely woman who I have worked with many Christmases, was backstage. I was singing my heart out to Snow White and she walks onto stage with a cup of tea for me in front of 2000 people completely unaware the show was on. She walked off but I told her to leave the tea. and now she always walks around backstage in costume just in case it happens again so she’s walking around in a wench outfit. One of the greatest panto moments of all time was when Cilla Black walked on stage at the Empire

again.

Seriously though, panto is so special to us. It is unique to the UK. Ok, so the Canadians have started to produce panto in the ex pat communities and I hear they are even testing it in Las Vegas, but it is something wrapped up with Christmas. We also mustn’t forget that for many children it is their first experience inside a theatre and if we get it right they will come back again. There is an excitement and wonderment with the children and I love them all getting dressed up in their costumes and coming to the show. It is incredibly rewarding being in panto and I can now say that I now look forward to Christmas

Have a very Merry Christmas everyone and a happy new year to you all!

orming pigs and rf pe , sh po g in go ly Li o, nt Paul O’Grady on pa starring with strippers by Vicky Edwards

Do you still keep Lily in a bin liner in your garage? No, she’s gone posh. The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool did an exhibition of all her costumes last year so she’s hanging up in polythene bags on dress rails now. It’s all very orderly and smart. Did you love panto as a nipper? I only ever saw a couple of pantos as a kid. The walk down [the elaborate traditional panto curtain call] always gets me because I remember being a kid and thinking awwr, I’d like to be in that. What advice would you give to anyone making their panto debut? You need stamina, so you’ve got to eat. And you do have to give it 110%. You’ve got gangs of rowdy kids and you’ve got to rise above the racket of that and get them on your side. Most of all you’ve got to get them to believe in it. And you’ve got to keep smiling. Normally it’s the villain that gets all the stick so you really have to be on your toes if you’re the villain. Apart from a great script and telling the story, what makes a good panto? I’ve seen some really good amateur productions with people really giving it their all. Forget all the special effects. You need enthusiasm and a cast that really gives it everything they’ve got. Where does the new book start from and take us up to? It starts in the present day and then goes back to the 80s and a pub in Leeds where I was on at lunchtime with two strippers. It’s all about that decade of working in clubs and pubs before eventually getting offered telly and theatre work. You have lots of animals. Have you ever been tempted to train them and incorporate them into an act? None of my dogs will sit when I tell them; they just look at me as if I’m a maniac. But Tom, my pig, gets it. He sits on command. You say ‘circus pig!’ and he stands on his hind trotters and then you say ‘roll over pig!’ and he rolls over on his side. People say I should go on Britain’s Got Talent but it would be a very short act!

aking a break from his role as Buttons at St Helens Theatre Royal, the dad of two chats to Amanda Moss.

What have you been up to? Not a lot really, a few bits and pieces on the radio. I am not a fussy actor, as long as it doesn't involve taking my clothes off then I am happy to look at the script.

and cleaning up wrapping paper and being a dad, really. I love Christmas, it is very traditional. I really do enjoy it, I like my kids to have something to look back on. And I like the Queen's Speech, I am quite traditional really.

How did you get the role of Andy MacDonald on Corrie? I was 15 years old and the school put on a play at the local theatre. It just so happened that a freelance casting director from Coronation Street came to see it and contacted our school to ask me to audition. The rest is history!

What is your new year's resolution? I ned to get organised more. I am not an untidy person but I don't keep a diary and I make arrangements, don't write it down and forget. So maybe I should buy a diary!

How did it change your life? Well it did, obviously. I spent ten years in the biggest Tv show on the telly, from 15 years old to 25. It shaped me as a person but my mum and dad were brilliant, in fact my whole family kept me completely grounded. It was a crazy period though. Simon (Gregson) and I are still really good friends and I spent the beginning of the year touring with my on screen dad, Charlie, in Canada. Coronations Street is huge over there, there are a lot of ex pats over there. What will you bring to your role as Buttons? I don't know I have never done it before. I know I get my heart broken so I'll be playing the sympathy vote from the audience. I am not expecting to be heckled though as I plan to be very cool. Why do I want to do Buttons differently? just because! What will you be doing over Christmas? I am lucky as I live just up the East Lancs road from the theatre so I will be able to go home every night. And I actually am getting a couple of days off this year. Christmas Day to me is all about being with the kids and the family. I will be putting batteries in things

THE CHRISTIANS 2012

Lead singer Garry Christian tells us why 2012's been a big year ... The Christians enjoyed great success in the late 80s and 90s with Garry's voice being described by The Mirror as 'the best voice of the decade' - I talked to Garry about what it means to be celebrating 25 years in the business. "1987 marked the release of our first album named simply THE CHRISTIANS and we were asked to mark this occasion with the deluxe release of the multi million selling album as well as our second album COLOUR (which mercifully knocked Phil Collins 'No Jacket Required' off the number one spot back in the day!!). Our record company Cherry Red wanted us to add a few extra unheard tracks and some photos and sleeve notes by me to make it a bit special for the fans ... its been great hearing all of those old tracks again. I've was interviewed on Vintage TV recently by the lovely Janice Long and Pat Sharp and they've played some of the old videos - I've had a bit of a laugh about some of the 'video production' I remember them being sold to me as really special 'ground breaking concepts' which is hard to see now!! I remember being freezing running through a housing estate and to make matters worse it wasn't even Liverpool ... it was Ruislip. We've also just released a brand new album SPEED OF LIFE which is just a reflection from me on how quickly it goes by. We've had some really exceptional reviews (I don't usually read them but these have been so positive I've forced myself). We worked with a producer Laurent Gueneau out in France (with local producer Ronnie Stone producing the title track). The album is the first studio album for 10 years and we hope people like it - the critics do so thats a start and we think it would be the PERFECT Christmas present. We've also done a few special gigs this year ... Isle of Wight, Rewind (with Marc Almond, OMD and a few others) to 20000 people and we're currently in the middle of a national tour with a Christmas gig right here in Liverpool at the Royal Court Theatre on Sunday 16th December - The Royal Court was one of the very first gigs we did in 87 (I remember because my Mum was in the balcony) so it'll be nice to get back there. Looking forward to seeing you all there with a special seat for the Queen of Liverpool Fashion Week Amanda Moss herself! Expect to hear all the favourites .. Ideal World, Harvest for the World, Forgotten Town, Words, Born Again and a couple of new ones from the album .. The band are great we've been together for a good few years now, we're as tight as anything and we have a lot of fun onstage ..... so it should be a good night. I'd like to add one last thing.... this year after 23 years of angst and agony Im so happy that the families of Hilsborough are getting some justice - its not over yet because it isn't , but its a great start and Im really pleased about that. ... I recorded 'Ferry Across the Mersey' with Paul McCartney, Holly Johnson and Gerry Marsden following the tragedy in 89 ... unbelievable that it took this long for the truth to come out. Take it from me this man is on form... a trip to the Royal Court should be highly recommended to start your Christmas off. THE CHRISTIANS PLAY THE ROYAL COURT THEATRE ON SUNDAY DEC 16TH 2012 TICKETS .... 0870 787 1866 To win a pair of tickets answer the following question: Name the six band members in THE CHRISTIANS? FASHION

R E P O O C NEIL The dust is settling after the debut of the launch of his Spring/Summer '13 collection for ScouseWorld.com at Liverpool Fashion Week. Wirral designer Neil Cooper, 34 had a chat with Amanda Moss about his rags to riches tale.

How did you get into fashion? I was always interested in fashion as a child when I would watch my auntie make curtains. I helped her out on the sewing machine and before long I was making curtains for the family home. I did A level Art and then a foundation course in fashion at college. I was shortlisted out of 1000 people and invited down to London Fashion Week to showcase my designs at Spitalfield Market in front of 1000 . people. Who have you worked for? I worked for the Wedding House in South Kensington making dresses for Vera Wang. I worked in retail for a few years part time which gave me the experience and flexibility to start my own range. But London is so competitive and not the place to set up your own business so I moved back to Liverpool

extremely competitive and not enjoyable at times. I have questioned whether I wanted to stay in the industry after I lost my boutique. What persuaded you to stay? Two things, my mum and dad have been very supportive and my best friend, Nicole Francis asked me to become head designer on her new online boutique, Scouseworld. That gave me the incentive to spring back and basically made me want to live again. I owe a lot to her.

“I want everyone to know that it's a very cut throat industry, I have gone from having everything to havi ng nothing. I have hit so rock bottom that the only way I can go is up.”

Tell us about the collection. There are around 14 pieces of which 2 or 3 are not wearable, they are a statement, such as the peacock dress which will retail for £550. Most pieces start from £95 though. What has been the highlight of the year? Liverpool Fashion Week was amazing, I got asked to take part in Paris Fashion week by a scout which was great.

Tell us about Repooc Repooc is my surname spelt backwards. It was my boutique which opened in Wallasey in 2005 but then I had to close it down in January this year as a sign of the times.

What else are you working on? I am working with Lauren Goodger on her new range of products so watch this space!

How did that make you feel? It was awful, I couldn't stop crying. I wanted to let everyone know that fashion isn't all glitz and glamour, it is

Neil would like to thank his partner, Kristian for all his help and support. 23 LIFESTYLE

BEAUTY

MAKE-UP TRENDS FOR CHRISTMAS..

with Jennie Freedland Head of make-up for Liverpool Fashion Week and Lifestyle Monthly’s Beauty Editor. Twitter: @JennieFreedland - Facebook: Jennie MUA Freedland

o here we, just days away from Christmas. With this in mind our skin is going to need some TLC to help cope with the weather, heating and all those late nights ahead....so my two latest must haves this month are Dermalogica's Multivitamin power Recovery Masque (www.dermalogica. com/uk £33.50) an ultra-replenishing, antioxidant rich masque that helps rescue stressed skin. Apply either after cleansing as a revitalizing remedy for dulling, dry, dehydrated, lackluster skin or before going out to add a radiance boost. My other product is from Shu Uemera......Tsuya UV Under Base Mousse (www.shuuemura.co.uk £29.00) this is THE new primer to have in your makeup bag - it's anti-ageing, has SPF, gives natural cover concealing dark spots, blemishes & scars and ultra hydrating giving a radiance like no other. Now party makeup.....the black smokey eyes is a classic, but for many it's too heavy, so what's the alternative? Well navy is great for everyone and a fab eye can be achieved by using a blue gel liner or pencil across the whole of the lid, then with a navy shadow blend on the inner & outer corners - taking it right under the lower lash line - and keep it soft across the top of the lid. Then as it's the party season, pat a blue shimmer pigment across the middle section of the lid (MAC, NARS, Sleek and Illamasqua all do variations of these). Finish off with black liner across the upper lash line and lashings of black mascara, complete with a soft nude lip. This look can be done with any colour black with gold is a good way of mixing it up, jewel and plum colours are on trend as are metallics. The other option is simply to have fun and be playful, minimise your brows and go to town with the shadow! NARS' new limited edition collection featuring Andy Warhol is fabulous with a shadow palette consisting of black, periwinkle blue and a vivid green, amongst others, along with lip glosses that are non sticky and moisturising (www.narscosmetics.co.uk). Then there's Illamasqua who have carved out a reputation of to die for products and colours with both the complement and empowered palettes already in my kit, along with the Magnetism lipstick for a slick of pop colour (www.illamasqua.com). Shu Uemera (who are now in the Beauty Bazaar) have just launched the Mon Shu collection designed by Karl Lagerfeld, with gorgeous eye, lip and nail colours and not forgetting LASHES! Shu Uemera are THE ones to have and if your feeling flush a pair of the limited edition Mon Shu lashes that are covered with rubies should sort that out as they are priced at £50!! So experiment and look gorgeous over the party season! Any questions simply email me and I’ll do my best to answer them. See you in the new year xx

CULTURE

Introducing Zara Jones, who has spent 12 years developing her book, "The Music Was The Thing" interviewing people about the Beatles album cover of their choice.

What gave you the idea behind the book? When I was in my teens, the Beatles had become popular again, thanks to the anthology series that was shown on TV. I began to write to other Beatles fans, and met up with some at the annual convention here in Liverpool. To use up film in my camera, I asked some of my friends to pose with their favourite Beatles albums. I found it interesting that people’s tastes varied so much, and how people’s personalities could sometimes be matched to the album they chose. I then developed this project by placing an advert in Beatles Book Monthly, asking people to send me photos of themselves with their favourite album and the reasons they’d chosen it. From there, I sought celebrity participation - I wanted to show that, despite differences in wealth and lifestyle, the rich and famous enjoy sitting down with their favourite Beatles album, just like the rest of us. I asked Chas Cole of CMP for backstage access to the Summer Pops festival, and thankfully, he liked my idea and agreed. Elton John was among the very first people to take part, which, as you can imagine, was very unexpected! Would you describe yourself as an artist or a photographer? I would say I’m very independent - and definitely a perfectionist. Who has been your favourite person and why? There are a few. Adele because she took such a genuine interest in the project and did the photo and interview with no prior warning, Gary Moore because he’s my favourite guitarist of all time - it took six years to secure an interview 28 LIFESTYLE

session with him, and thank goodness it happened, as he is no longer with us; Lemmy, as I was late for the interview and he couldn’t have cared less - a very down to earth man, and Mick Quinn from Supergrass, who came up with the idea of re-creating the Abbey Road cover. His photo is possibly the one I’m most pleased with. Why did it take so long to put the book together? Getting through the red tape that is PR people, managers etc. As I am not a known journalist or photographer, and as I couldn’t offer exposure in a big publication, or a fee, most of my emails were ignored. Not even a “no”, just totally ignored. As I mentioned, it took six years just to get Gary Moore. In the end, I only got an interview because I met him after a concert and asked him face to face, he said yes, and that then gave me credibility when I emailed his office. I found that 99% of the time, the artists themselves wanted to do it when they were actually asked! I funded everything myself, so travel opportunities were limited. I usually had to rely on people coming into Liverpool or Manchester on tour, although I did go to places like Oxford and Cardiff for one-off opportunities. Where can we buy a copy? There are several places in Merseyside - The Cavern Club, Impressions of Liverpool at Albert Dock, The Hard Day’s Night Shop, The Museum of Liverpool gift shop, and Lady Lever Gallery gift shop. ntering Tribiannia I was stopped in my tracks by the size of the place. It is tiny! But then the owners have cleverly turned a takeaway pizza joint into a quaint eaterie due to demand. and with the Friends theme running through it you can't help feeling quite at home. At first glance the menu is limited but then you have to remind yourself that you are not going to a big restaurant to lounge about for hours, Tribiannis is all about quality fast food with a high turn over of clientelle. and with most pizzas costing a fiver there really is nothing to complain about. There are continuous offers on the website, att he rtime of going to print there was a meal deal including a large pizza, side order and a bottle of wine for ÂŁ20. Students, who make up a huge proportion of Tribiannia's clients, get 20% off and deliver beer and wine as an extra service! And a s a parent I know I would be satisfied to know my children were eating here than at a greasy, unhealthy takaeway joint elsewhere. Bread and olives came to the table automatically while we made our choice. The staff were attentive and Alex, the new manager was a delight. A very worthy recruitment indeed! all the pizzas are named after characters from the famous sitcom. As we were so hungry we had some home made hummous to start with warm pitta bread.I had the Veggianis, served with piping hot crunchy veg on top, Simon had the mushroom and Pete had Ross's Red Hot Mexican. The pizzas were served on enormous wooden boards which made the serving small, but it was a trick as I couldn't finish mine! For a tasty snack and fast food treat, it is worth a visit to Tribiannias, especially if you are a Friends fan. While off the beaten track for the shops, it is definitely a better option than a sandwich on a cold winter's day. 33 LIFESTYLE

REVIEW BY RADIO CITY’S ROSSIE

Tel: 0151 709 4002 132 Duke Street East Village Liverpool, L1 5AG

It

was lovely to be asked to return to Il Forno on Duke St as part of my monthly restaurant review. It has been a while but I immediately remembered how good my last experiences were as soon as we were met by deputy manager Alessio. My dining partner on this occasion was Victoria Grimes, reporter and journalist on Granada Reports. Once seated Victoria opted for an Aperol Spritzer which is a very chic Italian cocktail while I went for an Italian beer I'd never heard of called Tipopils from Lake Como. I am not usually a lager drinker but I have to recommend this one, possibly one of the finest I've ever tasted. We then broke bread, a homemade flat bread topped with slow cooked sweet and tangy caramelised onions with a hint of garlic . We asked for a mixed starter of the chef's choice. First out was a seafood dream with king prawns, cherry tomatoes and rocket , saffron risotto topped with grilled asparagus (I could easily eat a bowl of the risotto on it's own). Scallops wrapped in pancetta, beautifully seared and seasoned, and salmon on bread almost like a salmon croque monsieur, every detail to every part of this dish was excellent. Next came a platter of cold meats, all of which were prepared and carved in house. There were slices of bresola , speck , prosciutto and mortadella to mention a few. Again the presentation matched the fantastic flavours. While we waited for our salmon gnocchi dish we ordered a bottle of Red SENATOR VALPOLLICELLA RIPASSA 2009 recommended by Alessio, this is another must try if you're a lover of a good red wine. The gnocchi dish was with fresh salmon in a cream dressing, superb Gnocchi and the cream and salmon combination really worked. Then - yes there was more - THE FIORENTINA, a massive T-Bone Steak for two, chargrilled then roasted and served rare. It was then carved into slices which you could cook a bit more on a provided hot stone plate. It was a vision and gourmet sight to behold, served with 6 different salts and seasonings along with spinach , roasted garlic rosemary potatoes and green beans. Honestly I'd have this every Sunday as my roast dinner! The beef was so tender and full of flavour we carried on eating it despite being quite full at this stage. We did manage to sample a few puddings , outstanding was the tiramisu , lemon cheesecake made with ricotta and meringue less we not forget the Homemade Gelati Mamma Mia. Il Forno really is an amazing Italian restaurant both for food and service, my compliments to Paolo the head chef and his team and a special thanks to Alessio for making it a special evening.

MUSIC

RISING SOUL STAR KOF Lawson is a 4 piece Pop/Rock band. But that’s like saying The Beatles were just a boy band. Andy, Adam, Ryan and Joel are 4 of the nicest guys I have had the chance to talk to. Hailing from Liverpool, Brighton, Chesterfield and Mansfield the band has a range of musical tastes from The Script to Queen to Guns N Roses and this shows in their on stage presence. And presence they have, fans from 14-40 scream as the lights come up and electrifying is the only word I can use to describe the atmosphere and energy they bring to the stage. Playing hits like When She Was Mine and their new song Standing In The Dark, they gave the fans at Liverpool’s O2 Academy everything they had come to see and hear. The Hometowns Tour is as sell out 5 venue tour of the cities the band members grew up in with a final show at Koko in London. I didn’t know what to expect from Lawson having heard none of their music beforehand, but it’s safe to say I am now a fan, complete with my signed ticket from the show. Their debut album Chapman Square is out now. Words by James Lacey

COMEDY

L.O.L

With comedian Sean Finn

They say “You have to be a comedian to come from Liverpool” and that would be true. My job every month in this column is not only to tell you about the fantastic stand ups in the city but also the many acts who come to Liverpool to perform in front of the best and most energetic audience’s in the U.K. Welcome to Laughter On Liverpool aka L.O.L ( see what I did !) This month brings festive fun as the top comedy clubs in the city bring you a Santa sack full of the best acts on the circuit , Rawhide Comedy Club Liverpool’s home of comedy since 1995 based downstairs at the historic Royal Court Theatre two big weekends during the holiday season as on the weekend s of the 7-8 December MC Brendan Riley introduces two acts supporting Phil Walker son of legendary comedian Roy Walker who is just as funny and entertaining as his father provides us with giggles all weekend long, then on 14-15 December Brendan MCs again but this time he introduces local act Simon Bligh who for many years has been a main attraction on every top club and festival, more info can be found at www.rawhidecomedy.co.uk Next club giving us the laughs is at Baby Blue in The Albert Dock as Comedy Central as line ups that gives us a look at some of the best stand ups in the north west such as BBC New Comedy Finalist 1998, and 1998 Northwest Comedian Of The Year Steve Harris on the weekend of the 8th a veteran who gets better every year, but for my money Comedy Central’s show of the month comes over three nights on the 20,21,22 of December as Waterloos own Steve Gribbin headlines with the most energetic

these acts can be seen all month long from the 1-29 of December at The Slug and Lettuce, Slaughterhouse and Café Sports Express for all information go to www.laughterhouse.com Theatre Entertainment comes as at the Echo Arena site Echo Two Brendan Carrol brings his multi award winning show Mrs Browns Rides again right off a run of series on BBC 1, Then at The Royal Court Theatre “A Nightmare On Lime Street” which features David Guest as the monster. But my recommendation for two great nights this month and club of the month goes to the fine chaps at Hot Water Comedy based upstairs at The Crown Hotel Pub and across the road at the Holiday Inn Lime Street, the first night is Sunday 2nd December at the Crown( yes a school night) as MC Paul Smith the ginger king of comedy

Laughter on Liverpool brand of comedy that has thrilled crowds from the Edinburgh Festival and beyond. For mor information go to www.jicomedy.co.uk Laughterhouse comedy run several venues over a weekend in the city and all shows guaranteed to leave you wanting more as all these venues host some of the best this city has to offer Silky, Chris Cairns , Keith Carter as Nige which if you have never seen this character you should as soon as you can because it’s one of the funniest you will ever see and make you wanting more, and then there’s Neil Fitzmaurice who not only is a fine comedian but a fine writer and actor who you will have seen in Phoenix Nights, Peep Show and Charlie Noades R.I.P. all 40 LIFESTYLE

hosts Sam Avery another act who has been at Edinburgh and also Liverpool’s own Comedy Festival, and secondly what I believe to be the best show this month comes new year’s eve at the Holiday Inn as Paul Smith introduces Sam Avery and R David to bring in 2013 with a big scouse laugh www.hotwatercomedy.co.uk for info on these nights. I have done my part to provide with how to get your laugh on over the festive period if anyone would like more recommendation or to find out where you can catch myself perform or what nights I will be attending follow me on twitter @TheSeanFinn using #LifestyleLOL. That’s it from me. I wish you a very Happy Christmas and all the best for 2013.

It’s simple. We just need healthier, tasty, balanced nutrition, proper hydration, sensible exercise and a few early nights. Start today with three days of proper hydration and sensible exercise. Sip a glass of water every two hours and do 30 minutes brisk fresh air walking, every day for just three days. These two changes alone will improve skin, muscle tone, alertness, energy levels, bowel health, immune health and increase fat burning. With just these and no other changes you will feel and look so much better. Breakfast is crucial. It sets the tone for the rest of the day and helps you burn more calories What should I eat? Is your pension safe???

LOOK WHO’S BACK...!

Following a landmark legal ruling earlier this year it has been held that your pension pot is now no longer a safe place to keep funds out of the reach of your creditors in the event that you are declared bankrupt. In a highly controversial ruling earlier this year, it was held that a bankrupt’s pension pot can now be made available to your creditors if you are declared bankrupt. Previously, pension funds have been untouchable by creditors however this is now no longer the case and money sitting in the private pension pots of those who have been made bankrupt can now be used to pay off bankruptcy debts. The case in question is that of Raithatha v. Williamson. Mr Williamson was made bankrupt in 2010 when he was aged 58. Although he hadn’t yet retired, his pension scheme allowed him to draw either an annual income or a lump sum payment from his pension however he chose not to do so. Mr Williamson’s Trustee in Bankruptcy applied to the Court for an order forcing him to draw his pension and hand it over to his creditors. Mr Williamson fought the application, but lost.

Atomic Kitten were noticed coming out of a recording studio in Liverpool...

The decision has come as a surprise to us all and abolishes the protection previously afforded to retirement funds. Pension schemes are no longer a safe place to store funds away from creditors and a bankrupt who has reached scheme pension age could well be forced to draw pension benefits and hand them over to creditors even if they are still working and have no intention of retiring! Understandably, this is a worrying development which will have a huge impact on the retirement funds of bankrupts and could see their pensions reduced significantly. Mr Williamson is set to appeal the decision in his case and his appeal is due to be heard on 29 and 30 November 2012. If the ruling is upheld, it is anticipated there will be a flurry of applications by Trustees all around the country seeking to get their hands on bankrupt’s pensions. The outcome of Mr Williamson’s appeal is therefore one which we all eagerly await! If you need advice and assistance in relation to insolvency matters including the issues outlined above then please don’t hesitate to contact Sarah Nolan at QualitySolicitors Jackson & Canter on 0151 702 8760 or by e-mail to: sarahnolan@qualitysolicitors.com

TRAVEL

W

ith Ireland on our doorstep it is only a day's crossing to the Emerald Isle. Editor Amanda Moss travelled with husband Simon and their 5 children via the Stena crossing to Belfast for a short city break... words by Simon Moss

The ferry crossing was easy and relaxing, made all the more so by the fantastic staff who couldn't be more friendly and helpful. They genuinely seemed to enjoy their job and why not? The facilities onboard were great with several lounges to spread out into, a play area with soft play and dvd movies for the kids, (with an entertainer on the weekend crossing doing a magic show and balloon modeling), cinema, shop, wi-fi access, bars, cafes and restaurants. We had an ensuite cabin on the way out but realised that we didn't need it on the way back as the kids were entertained the whole of the journey.Throughout both journeys staff were constantly cleaning tables, mirrors and floors. The toilets were spotless as were the floors. We will definitely use this service again though I would recommend taking a picnic as the restaurant menu was limited and the food was reheated and not the best quality. (Though prices were extremely reasonable - ÂŁ25 for a family meal for 2 adults and 3 children, And glasses of soft drinks were just ÂŁ1.) While the crossing is eight hours, the day in itself offers value for money and is a pleasant way to travel and beats the hustle and stress of an airport.

Our stay in Belfast was courtesy of the 4 star Raddison Blu Hotel. It is in walking distance of the city centre. With well appointed rooms next to each other they were spacious, clean, quiet, with very good free WiFi available and beds that were huge and extremely comfy and spotlessly clean. The free parking was a bonus but for me the complimentary soaps were deliciously scented and a pleasant bonus to our stay. The staff throughout our stay were friendly, courteous and did not mind the children running around the huge spacious reception area. Breakfast was a treat, with freshly prepared hot buffet, continental pastries and yoghurts, fresh fruit and meats and cheeses. I would have been happy to sit there all day!

TRAVEL

You can't visit Belfast without a trip to the Titanic museum. The venue is stunning piece of architecture both inside and out, with well laid out exhibitions and a terrific interactive experience taken at your own pace. There is plenty of background reading as well as the journey through the simulated shipyard. And it finishes with the tragic loss of the ship and a really good social history. The cafe is also very nice with superb ginger beer. Highly recommended whether you are a small child or a pensioner. The bus load of American tourists were certainly impressed. A short stroll away is the W5 Interactive Science and Discovery Centre. Laid out over four floors the children disappeared for hours and explored the educational exhibits while the parents sat down and relaxed. It is well thought out and offered challenging puzzles for the children to solve. No trip to Northern Ireland would be complete without a stop at the Giants Causeway in Atrim. It's a pleasant two hour drive along windy country roads. Fortunately the sun was shining on us For those who cannot make the long walk down to the causeway there are shuttle buses that will take you down and pick you back up. Do wear flat shoes with soles that will not slip. Some of the stones are slick and there is no roping off to keep you and sea apart, so care must be given if you go to the outer edges which is not recommended. This is certainly a wonder of the world and not to be missed. Next we went to the Rope Bridge with it's wonderful views of the coastline. It was very interesting and lots of fun and very exciting. It was a long walk from the parking lot but it was a beautiful day and all the guides were amazing especially the gentleman at the rope bridge that literally held my hand, first class service. We got a certificate with all our names on to prove we crossed the Rope Bridge. An unforgettable and enjoyable trip, reminding us all that you don't need to spend thousands of pounds or jet away to hot climate to have a delightful family holiday. What is often on our doorstep is truly the best.

ANGELAJAY Reaching out to the heart of the community...... Lifestyle Monthly welcomes Heart FM’s popular breakfast presenter as our regular columnist. Dosent time fly by now, can’t believe we’re in December and it’s almost Christmas! Cant believe I still haven’t bought any presents at all and I am skinto!! At the time of writing this column, though I am just recovering from an awesome Halloween party - more about that in a moment. But first, congratulations to the Echo in Liverpool who once again played host to the MOBO’S for the 17th Annual MOBO Awards, great night was had by all. Emeli Sandé and was the top winner, it looked like a tough job carrying all three awards for best album, best single and best female ……Emeli returned to the Awards to perform, incredibly well, ‘My kind of Love’, as did JLS who performed ‘hottest girl in the world’. They also won went home with the gong for best video and London rapper Plan B scooped Best Male Act and Best Hip Hop / Grime Act. Rita Ora, who flew in from her tour of the US for the occasion and to collect her first ever award also did well. She won Best Newcomer. Rita, tweeted her delight: “I won BEST NEWCOMER thank you to everyone who voted it’s the First thing I’ve ever won!! Not forgetting 90s American pop trio TLC were awarded a special award for their Outstanding Contribution to Music. Personally I am counting down to see Robbie Williams in a few weeks, so excited. I am sure he must be smiling, after making it to number one with ‘Candy’ on the big top 40. He tweeted a picture of his single’s cover on its release day and is of a big white n pink head! Also still smiling must be Kelly Osbourne who is looking great at the moment and must be feeling it to as she has won The Ultimate Style Icon award at the Cosmopolitan awards tweeting that she is still ‘in shock’. I just love live music, I went to see Muse recently they were absolutely incredible! They kind of got engulfed in a music pyramid on stage ….the effects were brilliant, except I didn’t half feel old when I was sitting high in the gods at the 02, scared of heights!! As one of my favourite west end shows is Wicked (just adore defying gravity!) I decided to go to my friend’s halloween party as Elphaba and have only just about got all the green paint off!! Serves me right for having too many drinkies on the weekend ….I didn’t even know Boxer David Haye and Toploader were in the room with me! I have Alan Carr to thank for that, tipping me over the edge with wine from his shoulder pads- yes it is true!! Fab 52 LIFESTYLE

idea though for going out next weekend, cheap night!! Only joking, I wouldn’t dream of it!

It seems a spat has broken out between Lady Gaga and Calvin Harris following an interview he did in which he admitted he turned GaGa down saying ‘I was busy, though’. Gaga explained that she had never emailed him etc …Yet Calvin hit back explaining it was her label that emailed him and that it was back before she became a star …the good news is that they have made up now, phew! We can all sleep!! For me I would go all gooey at the thought of a chocolate factory but for Calvin Harris it seems Kellogg’s cornflakes do that for him as he tweeted over excited the other day how he is ‘in Manchester’ ….’amazing imagine all those cornflakes’. Apparently Lady Gaga’s boyfriend Taylor Kinney has said that he wants kids and thinks he would be a good dad, but what does Lady Gaga think…. will she do an Adele too?! If you haven’t seen the new Bond movie - you must go, I am not a big Bond fan admittedly but this movie is the best Bond ever …the opening sequence is incredible! Just one thing I did notice though when M is in a meeting she forgets her handbag yet when camera pans back to chair handbag gone …….whoever is doing continuity needs to take a bit more notice…..as my co-host Spence said it must be a man not to notice that as funny enough lots of other women seemed to have noticed this but so far no man!! Keep smiling, love Angela xx

CHANEL CRESSWELL is off her trolley!

Image: Phil Fisk

This is England was a very controversial film, what did you learn from your role? To be open to new ideas and different options for scenes on the spot. All scenes are a group effort and working together.

What advice would you give someone wanting to become an actor? Someone told me never give up and find the truth in the scripts. I made sure I worked hard and put a lot of thought into it.

Tell us about your role in Trollied I play Katie she has been upgraded to the lottery and cigarette counter, she has a very friendly relationship with the butcher boy Kieran but he's married.

Who would you like to be cast with? I don't like to say ... in case it tempts fate. But there are loads !

What can we expect from the Christmas episode? The episode is centred around the Xmas party that Valco throw which Katie is NOT keen on. The episode plays on the "will they won't they" with Katie and kieran. We have some suprises in store and mishaps that's are worth seeing. Ian Botham and Warren Clarke have great watchable cameos too! Why did you decide to become an actor? I could play dress up for a day and get away from life. What is the most enjoyable aspect of your job? Meeting all different types of people and getting to like and understand them ! Crazy ones, mad ones beautiful ones all sorts! I’ve met and worked with some very talented people and, I’ve learnt a lot! Have you thought about going to Hollywood? I won’t rush anything, I'm only 22 and it's appealing but all in good time! What do you want for Christmas? An i-pad i think ... Everyone's addicted to theirs I feel like I'm missing out. How will you be spending New Year's Eve? With a cocktail in my hand partying with my family and friends dancing the night away. Why did you learn Japanese and how has it helped you? It's never helped me I just did it because it was different and I got an opportunity. My sister and mum did it so it looked interesting. But if I ever go to Japan and lose a friend I still remember descriptions of people ;-) 54 LIFESTYLE

What is your new year's resolution? Look after myself, go to the gym and eat healthy...But hey there's always next year!

ZEST LETS Bigger is no longer ‘Better’ – Downsizing Your Home As we go through our lives it is quite apparent that the everyday man or woman is pushing for bigger and better things, whether that is a bigger salary, car or family, as human beings we always seem to desire more. However in today’s climate those who usually could afford the bigger perks in life are feeling the pinch and that is why downsizing is now more popular than ever. Downsizing your home is usually associated with retirees looking for a smaller space, but it is now a more popular move for a large amount of hard working homeowners. It is also a move that makes a lot of financial sense. Lower expenses mean bigger profits, it’s as simple as. If you want to reduce your day-to-day living costs, or ensure you have enough set aside for a rainy-day, then consider downsizing. Your current residence can have a big impact on the cost of shopping, petrol, car insurance, commuting and more. Your monthly mortgage payment is generally your largest single expense. Most mortgages will usually account for 30% or more of your gross income, and 50% of your net income. Downsizing your home can have a vast reduction effect on mortgage expenses, and create a significant increase in your disposable income. Beside mortgage payments, energy bills are near the top of the long list for consuming more household income than any other expense. A smaller home means less space to heat or cool, this will reduce utility bills and mean more money in your pocket at the end of the month. Downsizing presents opportunities you may have never had before. Reducing your expenses is just one of the opportunities that will become available to you. But what to do with the money you save? Saving £500 per month for ten years turns into £6,000 per year. That is £60,000 over a decade, even if you just bury the extra cash in your back garden; it is a boost in your income that will benefit you! Today a money-smart homeowner is taking to the idea of downsizing. The financial benefits of moving to a smaller place are numerous, a downsize could result in a top up to your pension fund or a welcome addition to an existing savings account. Research carried out earlier this year revealed 40 per cent of those intending to sell in the next year were motivated by 62 LIFESTYLE

with

Julie West, Director of Zest Lets a desire to trade down. Lower your concern with today’s economic issues, by relieving many of the financial pressures of owning a larger home. Depending on your home equity and proceeds from selling, you could have enough money to pay for your new home in cash and have tax-free profits from the sale of your old house left over to invest in whatever you fancy! If the thought of downsizing is a likable option for you then you need to begin by working out exactly how much money you want to walk away with from the sale of your house. Then factor in the various costs such as tax and legal fees, in order to get an idea of the price range of the properties you could be interested in. Look at houses that have the features you most desire, such as storage space, and rooms for entertaining and relaxation, but on a smaller level. Discuss a promising new home with us. The right investment now will result in long term benefits for your future. It is critical to have the right agency to guide you through the downsizing process. Ensuring that in the end you will have a new home, in the right location and most importantly a result of an increase in your cash flow.

£169 MILLION LIVERPOOL SCHOOLS PLAN TO BE APPROVED. MULTI-MILLION pound plans to deliver 12 new schools in Liverpool are set to be approved by the Mayor’s Cabinet.

HUGH BAIRD HAIR AND BEAUTY STUDENTS WOW JUDGES AT ANNUAL COMPETITION Hugh Baird College held their annual Hair and Beauty Competition at the Liner hotel. This year’s themes included ‘1960s make-up’, Cultures and Traditions’ and ‘Circus’. Entries for the main event ‘Total Team Look Anything Goes’ included ‘The Witches’, ‘Barbie, ‘Muppets’ and ‘Glambots’ and the results made for a spectacular finale. Over 200 hairdressing and beauty Therapy students took part in events including face painting, ladies evening style and bridal hair. The competition judges included industry experts, local employers and former Hugh Baird lecturers. Sally-Anne from Curling U Softly in Waterloo praised Hugh Baird College, speaking at the event she said: “The competition was very well organised and the college sets very high standards. Hosting the event off site prepares the students for competing at regional and national competitions as well as creating a feeling of grandeur”. The occasion gave Hugh Baird’s floristry students a chance to showcase their talents too with themed balloon art and floral decorations around the venue. Performing arts and music performance students entertained the audience throughout the event. Following musical presentations of their creations, the winners of the Total Look Team event were ‘The Witches’. The team consisted of Emma Elwill, Emily Burns Young, Bethany Newall, Micha Chin, Jordan Brown and Lauren Calcott. A full list of competition results can be found on the College website at www. hughbaird.ac.uk. Vice Chair of Governors Trish Livsey said: “It has been a fabulous event showcasing the creativity and energy of Hugh Baird College students and is fantastic to see all of the students’ families and friends supporting them. A further £34.2 million will be spent on major investment of other schools most in need that have not previously benefited from investment through PFI or Building Schools for the Future - bringing the total spend to £169 million. The other 11 schools to benefit are: Archbishop Beck Secondary – start on site at former Long Lane Depot in Fazakerley in April 2013 and opening September 2014. St John Bosco Secondary and Our Lady of St Swithin’s Primary in Croxteth - rebuild on existing St John Bosco site starting in April 2013, opening September 2014. Archbishop Blanch Secondary near the city centre – rebuild on new site (TBC), opening September 2015. St Hilda’s Secondary in Aigburth – rebuild on new site (TBC), opening September 2015. Holly Lodge Secondary in West Derby – rebuild on rear of existing site, opening September 2015. Bank View Special School in Fazakerley – rebuild on existing site, opening September 2015. New Park Primary in Kensington – rebuild on existing site, opening September 2016. Northway Primary in Childwall – rebuild on existing site, opening September 2016. SFX Secondary and St Julie’s Secondary in Woolton – relocation of St Julies to former Lower Lee site on Beaconsfield Road to create a Catholic boys/girls campus with new buildings at SFX - opening September 2017. The Department for Education have also granted funding through the Priority Schools Building Programme which will enable Redbridge and Aigburth High Schools (special schools) to be rebuilt. The city council is aiming for 60 percent of the spending on the projects to be made with firms employing labour from Liverpool, rising to 70 percent across Merseyside. It is hoped that up to 400 apprenticeships will be created, with a minimum of 250, through the life of the programme. Funding for the project is coming from a mix of capital funding, receipts from the sale of surplus school sites and council resources. The report will be considered by the Cabinet on Monday 19 November 2012.

Johns St t a r e e h C s a tm ris h C g in d Sprea St Johns

has helped to spread the festive cheer this Christmas by inviting a panel of local children to become its official Toy Testers for the festive season. The shopping centre invited pupils from St Monica’s Primary School to take Christmas into their own hands by compiling their very own ‘must have’ Children’s Christmas Wish List. Ten lucky pupils, aged seven to eleven tested all of the latest toys and games to pick their top tips for Santa. The toy testers donned special lab coats and had free reign to play with toys from top retailers including Argos, Game, Wilkinson, and ModelZone before voting on their favourites and compiling the definitive Children’s Christmas Wish List. Winning the toy testing session was Stephen Mulhern’s All Time Classic Magic Set which is currently available from Argos at £9.99. Second placed toy was a blow up remote controlled R2D2 from ModelZone, priced at £39.99. Ian Ward, centre director for St Johns, said: “Our toy testing session this year was a huge success. “It proved a unique opportunity for local school pupils to sample the must-have toys available right here in Liverpool and for them to get a glimpse of what they would like Father Christmas to bring them this year! “What’s more, we all know how difficult children can be to buy for when there are so many toys to choose from. We hope this proves to be a fool-proof guide for those shoppers trying to decipher what children will be hoping to unwrap on Christmas morning.” St Johns is the ideal place to shop for gifts for all members of the family from fashion and fragrance to toys and games. Plus there’s a huge range of colourful decorations and festive food to make this Christmas Day the best yet. To see the wish-list in full, or for more information on opening times and stores visit:

Reality tv star Christopher johnson finds success away from the cameras with the opening of his new salon So why did you go on Desperate Scousewives? I was against going on Scousewives as I had never been in front of a camera and I am really am quite shy, but after my very persuasive husband, Mark assured me I will be amazing for our careers and we get to hang around with our friends on set and it would easy just being us, so I thought why not.

How have you used your fame to your advantage? We get involved with lots of charities and fund raises, also in business having a profile and followers on twitter and facebook in the thousands helps us push our business to a lot more people. Earlier in the year we were invited to present GayPride which was a huge highlight to 2012.

What appealed to you about the show? The potential to raise our profiles. I never thought wed get picked. Mark maybe but not me, but to my surprise they picked us and we slung shot into this crazy worlds of parties, long filming days and people asking for pictures! And more importantly having a profile to help raise money for charities such as Claire house.

Have you any more tv work in the pipeline? We've had a few interviews for reality tv shows and little bits but nothing on paper as yet, but we feel 2013 is our year.

How did it change your lives? We tend to go to a lot more events now and life got a little busier so now we make sure we have date night. In our personal lives nothing change. Mark and I are always true to our selves friends and family. In business its given me the amazing opportunity to open a salon in the city centre with my husband and business partner Samantha Ward. Do you get recognised in the street? All the time, it was so strange at first having people point and whisper I kept thinking, have I got something on my face? oh wait I'm on tv ha ha. 72 LIFESTYLE

What do you offer at the salon? At The WhiteHaus Salon We offer every thing from all aspects of hair to beauty to laser hair removal, skin tightening and resurfacing, botox and the latest crazy in aesthetics. The Vampire Facelift. You were part of the L'oreal team at Liverpool Fashion Week, how did you find that? I was asked to take part in LFW buy my Loreal Rep Nicola, this was a first for me and i went in a little nervous but once we got started and had a chance to talk to Richard Philipart the Style Director i just loved it back stage styling the models and preening them an amazing experience. I'm much hoping to get White Haus involved next year, I think I may of actually been the last to leave from the Loreal team.

Moving forward to the new year and 2013 what projects are you looking forward to? The business is still a baby and we have much to do we has a great marketing strategy in place and the long night and hard days will start to pay off. How will you be spending Christmas? Christmas will start for us on Christmas day with breakfast with Mark and I then I go to my families were Icook for 16 people like i have done for 12 years, and mark goes to spend it with his family then in the night we meet up and spend the night in front of our open fire with a bottle of fizz and watching home alone and eating our wait in cheese and biscuits. On Boxing day back to work for Liverpool's ladies who to look there best with hair and make up, new year we are going to disney land paris for our wedding anniversary which is new years eve. What do you want in your stocking? A fabulous Burberry jacket I've seen, some D&G shoes and a nespresso coffee machine which Marks assure me he anti buying as a coffee machine aint a present! So I hope santa gets this! Visit Chris at his salon in Cleveland Square, Liverpool.

Cognitive Dissonance Joanne Thompson

10th December 2012 - 1st February 2013

oanne Thompson's enjoyment of the creative started during early childhood where she spent hours learning the skills of domestic crafts with her Grandmother. After leaving school Joanne studied Art and Design at the North East Wales School of Art & design, winning numerous inhouse awards. She then worked for some years in textiles developing extensive experience in the use of a range of materials. She returned to study for a Fine Art (Hons) degree graduating in 2007, when her degree show was highly praised for its unusual and creative use of multimedia. A selection of her large scale works, demonstrating her innovative use of materials, can be seen at the dot-art Showroom this winter. The artist says of her practice: "My work concentrates on exploring the interface between memory and experience. By examining the oscillation between my memory’s psychological understanding and the physical process of the creative present I attempt to integrate my inner cerebral reality with the outside world. I rely upon my personal sensation of a subject and work intuitively allowing the artistic process to evolve naturally. The work is only finished when my perception of the subject returns as a visual object”. As the Artist Howard Hodgkins States; “A painting is finished when the subject comes back, when what has caused the painting to be made comes back as an object.” The final image offers the viewer the freedom to discover his or her own interpretation." The exhibition is open to the public from 12-6pm Monday to Friday and by appointment, at dot-art, 16 Queen Avenue, Castle Street, Liverpool, L2 4TX. Please call 0845 017 6660 or see www.dot-art.com for more information or to make an appointment. All work is for sale and admission is free.

A winter's tale...

A true story as told by T Stokes

THE HAUNTED GYPSY WAGON

Pete’s old horse drawn gypsy wagon or 'vardo' as the gypsies called them, was a relic of a bygone era, and drew a large crowd wherever it went, Pete lived in it on the road all summer while travelling to various events and festivals, but people kept mentioning that while females felt at home in the wagon, men often felt 'uneasy' in it, and pete wondered why? Originally whole families often with several children lived in these canvas covered wagons called 'Ragtops' or 'Bowtops' and lived their lives by the side of the road as best they could often travelling from farm to farm working in fields and doing a variety of odd jobs. The wagons, the forerunners of modern caravans carried all their goods, feed for the horse and often a few chickens too, but nowadays people just had them as curios and holiday homes, the popular Author Roald Dahl wrote all his childrens books in an old gypsy wagon in his garden, and they are certainly attractive with their elaborate carvings and brightly coloured fittings, which were originally said to fend off evil spirits. Pete a man who originally worked in maxillo-facial surgery could turn his hand to most craft particularly excelled in woodwork and travelled the country, very different work from repairing peoples broken faces after severe violence and road crashes, but as his skills grew so did his fame, and pressure of work was coming in from people far and wide and Pete, found he could not cope, he was waking up at night in a sweat hearing cars brakes squealing and seeing peoples smashed faces, so he gave up the high pressure lifestyle for one where just he and the wagon could feel the freedom of travel, be under the sky and the stars and live from a few fish caught in rivers and fruit and berries from wayside hedgerows, petes message is that of a simple life, you dont need huge mortgages bigger cars or foreign holidays, and people flock to speak with him and learn his wisdom. He asked me several times over a period to examine the wagon for an answer as to why men felt unwelcome but although feelings and memories were not difficult to grasp, the wagon had been altered and repaired over many years, and gave confusing vibrations. But the occasion came where Pete could bear it no longer and asked me to please help, although he always felt well inside some people were very uncomfortable or even afraid of it, so i came again to where he was parked in Wiltshire and saw his makeshift shower, a nearby tree with a branch bent down and tied to the ground with a pail of water suspended high above, and a pile of dead wood stacked for his wagons small stove.

how comfortable it was and pulling up a sheepskin rug felt very much at peace. I had been dozing for some time when I woke suddenly with a start as a short plump weatherbeaten lady stood over me asking what i was doing in her wagon, a little shocked i went on to explain that i was Petes guest, she said this was her home and was very fussy who came inside, i felt a little threatened but realised why some people felt unwelcome and tried to pacify her with the few words of romany that i knew and i said she was scaring people, when her face changed and she stood back and only then did i realise how absurd it was that i had been threatend with a saucepan by the ghost of a long dead gypsy! She went on to tell me just how hard life was in those days and worrying and finding food for the children was very dificult, and the winters were long and cold and life was always hard and short, and when death came as it often did roadside burials were commonplace. i was entranced that this lady had appeared to me and was telling me her life story, i lapsed back into a deep sleep and was only disturbed by petes return, i gasped out what had happened, that the original owner a lady called Rose had left with the children and went hop picking and vegetable gathering to get away from a cruel drunken husband, and this was why she was very suspicious of men in general, pete corrected me and said her name was Roseanna and she did own the wagon and travelled in Kent but that was all many years back. In the late 1900s and the early days of this century, people who were buried outside cemeteries and often by the Roadside, were called 'Deviant Burials' and without a religious ceremony were said to often become Revolent or renegade souls, my experience says this is possible but not a general rule, nevertheless Gypsies or as they prefer to now be called 'travelling people' are very superstitious and many believe these old burials are the cause of vampires and wandering souls and partly for this reason a lot of Gypsies have become born again Christians. In explaining to pete that the spirit of this old gyspy wanted a prayer said for her spirit, and it would be an idea to have the wagon blessed, he said just do it. So we built a small fire outside consecrated some sticks as wands, and smudged the 4 corners of the wagon North South East and West and told Roseana she must not worry and should go to the light, and as we with some blessed salt water cleansed the entrance to the old wagon as it glowed in the Wiltshire sunshine, we could swear we saw in the shadow of the trees nearby a shape of a plump old lady with 3 children huddling away.

I spent some inside chatting to him over a delicious cup of herbal tea from a nearby hedgerow, and apologised as i felt little more than before, Pete stood up impatiently and said; 'look i have been invited out for a meal you stay here until i get back in case you can pick anything up about the weird vibes some people get when inside the wagon'.

Left on my own i sat there and sat there with no inspiration and feeling defeated when i realised i was growing very sleepy, slumping back i thought i would take advantage of the bunk at the back of the wagon, and climbing up realised

MUSIC

SHAWN JOHN aka DJ SPY KATCHA, is turning his attention to acting as he takes on the role of Othello, a regional theatre tour, which includes the Floral Pavillion next year.

ng story.

He chats to Amanda Moss about his inspiri What is your background I am an original East end boy, a proper cockney How did you end up here? After my mum died I needed to find new direction. she provided everything for me and after she was gone I needed something so I came to Liverpool for the Liverpool carnival and met some people who are still my best friends today. I started at the bottom, it was tough, I didn't have a home but it has paid off. I have spent half my life here and I have applied myself. I had the hunger and the passion and I have always loved music. What is your biggest success in the city? We set up The Players ball in 1997, it was 3RST and was one of the original super clubs. It was with Olabean, 2Kind, DFresh and Ridge. We invited Tim Westwood to play and it boomed from there. I was also a DJ at Radio City on the Hot spot for 8 years. We helped get the music scene back on the track. In those days there was no media support, we did it all ourselves through flyers and the community station in Toxteth, TCR. How did you get into acting? It was through my contacts at Radio City. I wouldn't have the met the people I did without them and for that I am very grateful. I met a producer from the Everyman who was putting on a production and offered me a part and promised to theatrical train me as well. It gave me a passion for acting which I have to this day. 82 LIFESTYLE

Tell us about Othello This is my first main role and first Shakespeare part and I have thrown myself into it. I have seen the Kenneth Brannagh movie and looking forward to the challenge. The trouble is that there aren't enough role for black actors in the UK, which is why I want to go to LA. So tell us about your plans for 2013 After Othello I am going to LA. I am inspired by the English actors out there in shows such as Homeland, The Wire, Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy. Idris Elba (Luther) is a huge inspiration and I know him as well. It seems you have to go to America and make it there to be recognised back here. I will always be a DJ but with acting I can show off more of my creativity and there is longevity with that. I am really passionate about acting. Fingers crossed I get my visa! As a DJ what did you think of the MOBOS. its great to show off our local up and coming stars too like KOf, Esco williams, Chelcee, Jay Norton, Aystar, Future & Janiece Myers. This is right for this city, we deserve it, people have worked so hard for it. I am very passionate about Liverpool and helping the community. The MOBOS have helped that. It was great to be involved in the workshops helping people and giving them advice about getting into the industry.

Hello Lifestyle readers! I hope this finds you well and looking forward to the festive season and everything that comes with it. For me, the Christmas period means that I am as busy as ever. As I mentioned in my last column, I am once again performing in a pantomime and this year I will be taking on the role of ‘Gaston’ in Beauty and the Beast. This will be my seventh pantomime and I am really enjoying my new character. I hope that the audience in Bridlington enjoy themselves I always do on stage. All of the cast will be doing their very best to put on a fantastic show and I am so excited to get started. I have also been continuing my work with Wagner Spraytech and I attended the Ideal Homes Show with them in the middle of November which was a huge success and a great opportunity to share the brand with so many different people. They provide excellent painting solutions that are perfect for a wide range of different painting tasks. The products proved to be really popular at the show and it was great to demonstrate the paint solutions. I’m looking forward to working with them in the future and I wish everyone at Wagner Spraytech a merry Christmas and a happy new year. I have also begun a new building project and although I always enjoy working outdoors, the falling temperatures this year do make conditions a little difficult to cope with. Luckily I have the solution in the form of my Heat Holders. These fantastic socks are specially designed to keep feet completely warm and comfortable, no matter what the weather brings. With a 2.34 thermal tog rating they are, as far as it is known and has ever been tested, the warmest thermal socks in the world. I have to say that I completely agree and I always wear a pair of Heat Holders to keep my feet warm whilst I am working. All that remains is for me to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a fun filled and prosperous new year. The festive season brings so many great occasions for us all to enjoy and I hope that you make the most of this great time of year. I look forward to telling you all about my newest projects in my next column. All the best, Craig.

Build and hang a garden gate. The benefit of constructing your own garden gate is that you can really be creative with its size and design. I chose to build a gate to match my garden fencing and created a point at the top of the gate to make it harder for intruders to climb over the top! STAGE ONE Start by cutting the 4”x1” timber fence panels to length, creating a point for the top of the gate if you wish. Now lay the fence panels on the floor or a work bench, leaving a space between each panel. Using a chop saw cut a cross section piece of 4”x1” and screw it firmly across the width of the fence panels using a drill/driver and 40mm screws. To add to the appearance of your gate and to provide extra support you can cut and fit another cross section on a diagonal spanning across the upright panels and just touching the bottom of the cross members. STAGE TWO Next, position both hinges where they will be fixed to the gate and drill pilot holes where the screws will be. Then, swap the drill bit to a screw driver piece and firmly drive the screws into the timber of the gate to secure the hinges.

TOOLS/MATERIALS: Chop saw Drill/driver Countersink drill bit 3mm Tape measure Setsquare 4” x 1” timber Screws Hinges and latch

You are now ready to hang your gate and should repeat the above process to secure the free edge of the hinges to the gate post. Latch fittings and locks can be attached in the same way as your hinges.
