LUTSEN, TOFTE, SCHROEDER
THESE WEST END GEMS HOLD ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS IN EVERY SEASON.
It may surprise some, but Highway 61 runs along the North Shore of Lake Superior more east to west than north to south. Because of this orientation, locals coined the phrase “the West End” to refer to the three small towns of Lutsen, Tofte and Schroeder. Just a handful of miles apart, these friendly rural towns create a trio of points to hop along on your adventures like rocks across a creek.
GATEWAY TO COOK COUNTY
For visitors from the south, the West End is the gateway to Cook County. As you glimpse into the history of logging, fishing and recreation for which they were established and settled more than a century ago, you will feel a distinct atmosphere in each community as you pass through—a blend of history, culture and modern outdoor experiences. Today, the West End’s historic lodges and resorts, lakeside and forest campgrounds and luxurious relaxation options are sure to keep you busy during your stay. The West End is home to many hidden gems just waiting to be explored. From sparkling lakes to glacial sculpted mountains and sleek canyons, you’ll discover secrets about yourself and the environment with every step.
If you’re a bicycling enthusiast, you’ll find endless miles of gravel routes and the paved Gitchi-Gami State Trail that push your limits and challenge what you thought was possible. Or hit the “Jackpot”—the new 16-mile connector trail that boasts challenging climbs, flowing descents and epic views. This singletrack mountain bike trail connects the Britton Peak trail system to Lutsen.
When the snow falls, enjoy it! In addition to the alpine slopes at Lutsen Mountains, discover the immaculate Norpine and Sugarbush Nordic ski trails, don snowshoes for an invigorating workout, ice skate at local rinks or take an exhilarating snowmobile ride through the wilderness.
SKI & GOLF IN THE SAME DAY
On a perfect spring day, you can make fresh tracks at Lutsen Mountains in the morning, and as the temps warm up, swap your skis for clubs and play Superior National at Lutsen Golf Course in the afternoon. Don’t miss a chance to hike along the Caribou, Cross, Temperance, Onion, Poplar and Cascade rivers that lead to enchanting cascades and waterfalls.
For those looking to indulge, treat yourself to one of the top-notch spas and melt away your stress beside Lake Superior’s calming backdrop. Wine down at North Shore Winery, featuring locally-crafted ciders and wine, take a trip back in time to revisit an original fishing village at Tofte’s North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum or explore history at the Cross River Heritage Center in Schroeder.

Catching a glimpse of the northern lights is a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s a chance to experience the mystical feeling connected with something almost otherworldly. Seeing the aurora with your own eyes is beyond comparison. Though dark skies are visible in many areas throughout the world, there’s no better place than Cook County. 1 2 3 4 5
CHECK THE FORECAST
The best viewing is during clear nights with little to no moonlight.
BUNDLE UP
Northern Minnesota nights get chilly. We highly recommend dressing in layers, regardless of the season.
LOOK NORTH
Find a spot with a clear view to the north, a place without hills or trees blocking your line of sight.
NO LIGHTS
Your eyes need time to adjust to the natural darkness, so be sure to turn off car lights, house lights and flashlights, and keep your cell phone screen dim.
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
If you’re hunting auroras, look for greenyellow or smoke-like white-gray displays. Most nights, you’ll see clear views of the Milky Way, orbiting satellites, faraway planets and stars that you’ve never seen before.
GUNFLINT TRAIL
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC HAS NAMED THE BWCAW AS ONE OF THE WORLD’S “50 PLACES OF A LIFETIME.” IT’S NO WONDER THE AREA IS A KEY ATTRACTION.
“Take a drive up the Trail” is a message repeated to many visitors who stop by our information centers. The Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway (County Road 12) is a 57-mile paved roadway that begins in Grand Marais and skirts the Canadian border at its most northern points. Originally, the Gunflint Trail was a footpath developed into a dirt road in the late 1800s. Now a paved byway, the “Trail” winds its way inland, following the path created long ago.
44 ENTRY POINTS TO THE BWCAW
The Gunflint Trail is most notably known as a gateway into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Iconic pines stand majestically as nature’s archway, and paddling the pristine waters draws many visitors. The vast wilderness is accessible to all, with many bordering cabins, lodges and resorts to book your stay. The wildlife, the forest, the water and the quietness await you any time of year.
Getting to the Gunflint Trail is easy. Drive the North Shore Scenic Byway of Highway 61 to Grand Marais and with one simple turn, you will find yourself climbing over the Sawtooth Mountain ridgeline into the vast boreal forest.
GLACIALLY-CARVED LANDSCAPES
With every season, the Gunflint Trail offers different adventures. Spring wakes slowly in the northland, and as the last tentacles of ice pull away from the shorelines and stubborn snow drifts melt, the green of summer makes a grand entrance. Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center near the end of the Trail opens on Memorial Day and offers historical and nature exhibits, outdoor hiking trails and children’s programs.
Most visitors choose spring, summer or fall to paddle in the pristine waters of the BWCAW, but those who brave a winter trip into the wilderness come out with experiences unlike any other.
Warm summer nights under the dancing northern lights are magical, and winters on the Gunflint Trail bring a dreamlike snow globe to life. With over 180 km of groomed Nordic ski trails on three major trail systems and numerous lakes for ice fishing, snowmobiling or dog sledding, you’ll find adventure at every turn. At the end of the day, return to a toasty fire at one of the many lodges dotting the Gunflint Trail.
PORTAGE THROUGH THE VAST WILDERNESS OF THE BWCAW.
WATCH THE AURORA BOREALIS DANCE.
THE GUNFLINT TRAIL SKY IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS NIGHTTIME DARKNESS AND BOASTS THE DARKEST SKY EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI.

WHAT’S NEW?
WHAT’S NEW IN COOK COUNTY?
There’s always something new and exciting to try in Cook County. Local entrepreneurs continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible, delivering new, renovated or reinvented opportunities to make memories that last a lifetime.
SCAN TO SEE A LIST OF UPDATED BUSINESSES AND OTHER IMPROVEMENTS.
STATE PARKS AND TRAILS
3,340 SQUARE MILES OF WILD LANDS TO DISCOVER
As soon as you enter Cook County, the vast natural landscape will take your breath away. You’ll be ready to immerse yourself in nature to experience it all. Throughout the area, you’ll find incredible state parks, a national monument, wilderness areas and national scenic trails. These hidden gems are wild and beautiful, each unique in its own right and waiting to be explored.
Our parks are home to countless miles of trails that take you into the wild heart of Cook County. For most of the year, you can hike, bike and OTV/ATV through rugged terrain, and when the snow falls, our trails transform into a winter wonderland for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, fat tire biking, dog sledding, skijoring and snowmobiling. Further inland, in the BWCAW, you can paddle a canoe or kayak and portage through our state’s most remote wilderness area.
Whether you’re planning a day trip or a longer camping excursion, when you’re ready to get outdoors and experience the wild, Cook County’s state and national parks and trails are waiting.
TEMPERANCE RIVER STATE PARK
Just one mile northeast of Schroeder on Highway 61, this park boasts incredible trails for hikers of all abilities and stunning views of the Temperance River Gorge. Hike to Hidden Falls or the summit of Carlton Peak, and enjoy every moment of spectacular views. For the history aficionados out there, the river earned its name because it has no sand bar, and a place without a “bar” deserves to be called Temperance.
CASCADE RIVER STATE PARK
Eight miles northeast of Lutsen on Highway 61 lies the Cascade River State Park and endless opportunities for adventure. View the beautiful waterfalls that create Cascade Falls, then trek to the dramatic, multi-tiered gorge section known as the “Cascades.” Stop often to take in the gorgeous views or to cast a line out for fish.
JUDGE C.R. MAGNEY STATE PARK
Head northeast of Grand Marais on Highway 61 for 14 miles to find this wonderful state park. Go birding, fish for trout and hike the 2.5-mile loop along the Brule River to see Devil’s Kettle Falls, a spooky split waterfall that pours into a hole that was once thought to be bottomless.
GRAND PORTAGE STATE PARK
Located right on the border between the U.S. and Canada, this state park is also home to High Falls, the tallest waterfall in Minnesota. At 120 feet, High Falls is one of the most incredible features of the Pigeon River, and accessible via a half-mile barrier-free boardwalk.
GRAND PORTAGE NATIONAL MONUMENT
Explore the history of the Fur Trade and the original native peoples (Anishinaabe) of our region through the historic fort and interpretive center supported by the National Parks Service. Hike the Grand Portage trail, an 8.5-mile trek from the wilderness interior to Lake Superior, historically used to bypass the high falls and cascades of the Pigeon River, or take in the view of Grand Portage Bay from the Mount Rose Trail.
ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK
While Isle Royale National Park is technically in Michigan waters, the archipelago is just 22 miles from Grand Portage. Known as Minong to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the archipelago is an ancestral land with deep cultural connections. Visitors are welcome to take a day trip by ferry or embark on a multi-day adventure on the island for fishing, kayaking, hiking, boating, birding and more. Explore historic sites, including lighthouses, copper mining sites and shipwrecks.
NORTH COUNTRY NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL
The North Country National Scenic Trail is the longest in the National Trails System, stretching 4,800 miles across eight states from North Dakota to Vermont. Cook County’s portion traverses along the north shore of Lake Superior via the Superior Hiking Trail and inland on the Border Route and Kekekabic Trails in the BWCAW.
BOUNDARY WATERS CANOE AREA WILDERNESS
Over one million acres of pure wilderness bordering Canada, the BWCAW is Minnesota’s largest wilderness. No traffic or ringing phones, just nature. Traveling by canoe or kayak connects visitors with the area’s rich history. Designated as a Dark Sky Sanctuary, it offers some of the darkest skies in the world.
LAKE TO TABLE
THE GULLS CAW AS THE BOAT RETURNS TO THE HARBOR, A PINKISH RISING SUN MARKING THE START OF ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL NORTH SHORE DAY.
Waves lap gently along the rocky shoreline as the commercial fishermen unload the day’s catch of herring, lake trout and menominee. The team at North Superior Fishery are no strangers to the grueling early morning life of a commercial fisherman, but they’re some of the few who make their living this way on Lake Superior.
Eric Brisson and Tyler Smith have been fishing for most of their lives. Both served as apprentices to earn commercial fishing licenses, and today, they’re proud to keep the tradition of commercial fishing alive in Cook County.
Based in Grand Marais, MN, North Superior Fishery supplies fresh fish to restaurants and stores throughout the Arrowhead region. Their tireless dedication drives the fishing culture that permeates the region.
“By 11am every day, we have fresh fish—still cold from Lake Superior—ready to batter, fry and serve as fish and chips to our customers,” explained Katie Slanga, owner of The Fisherman’s Daughter, the beloved Grand Marais restaurant perched above North Superior Fisheries in the Dockside Building. “It’s a true dock-to-table experience that you can only find in coastal cities.”
For Slanga, The Fisherman’s Daughter is more than a restaurant. It’s a place to celebrate the region’s herring heritage as a vital industry that drives Cook County’s economy as well as feeds its people.
A few short blocks away lies South of the Border Cafe, a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Known for its incredible herring done up for breakfast and lunch. If you’ve never started your day with lightly breaded herring and eggs, a stop into the lovingly nicknamed “SOB” is a must.
“We’re lucky to have Lake Superior provide food for the people,” said Wendy Ford, owner of South of the Border Cafe. “We get fish from the local boys one day, and it’s gone the next. Customers love our fish as much as they love the lake and fishing. It’s a really unique part of Minnesota that most don’t get to experience every day.”
Further inland, up the Gunflint Trail, lies The Gunflint Lodge and Outfitters, an iconic property with a history dating back to 1925. The SpunnerKerfoot family owned, operated and expanded the Gunflint Lodge from 1927 until 2016, when they sold it to John and Mindy Fredrikson.
“We see so many visitors coming to the Lodge to fish. We offer everything from guided fishing trips to rental poles so that anyone can drop a line,” Mindy shared. “When guests return with their catch of the day, our staff will clean and filet their fish. We can package and freeze it or prepare it for them in the restaurant for dinner. That’s an experience that guests never forget!”
The fishing culture is alive and well throughout Cook County’s many communities. Whether guests dine at restaurants with innovative fish-forward specials, fish on thousands of inland lakes and streams or simply observe the commercial fisherman at work as the sun rises, fishing in Cook County is something for everyone to experience and enjoy.

GEAR UP, HEAD OUT
BEING IN THE WILDERNESS IS THE EPITOME OF FREEDOM. IT’S JUST YOU, NATURE AND THE ELEMENTS. AND WHILE YOU CAN GO WHERE THE WIND TAKES YOU, GETTING INTO THE WILDERNESS ISN’T ALWAYS THE MOST SPONTANEOUS ACT NOR SHOULD IT BE.
The best adventures are the result of careful planning and preparation, lists and gear checks and strategic packing to ensure you have what you need when you’re outside the bounds of the developed world. Whether you’re planning a trip into the remote heart of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) or an outdoor adventure closer to local communities, the preparatory legwork is the key to an incredible time.
The Lake Superior Trading Post in downtown Grand Marais opened its doors in 1971, and Eric Humphrey, the current owner, literally grew up in the business. The Humphrey family got involved with the Trading Post in 1973 when Eric was just a few years old. After pursuing school and life away from Cook County, Eric returned to run the store and discovered his true passion of being a reliable point of connection for people making memories in the region.
“It’s truly been an honor to help people prepare for the adventure of a lifetime,” Eric explained. “Lake Superior Trading Post has become somewhat of a launching pad for all types of outdoor activities. We see Superior Hiking Trail hikers, folks headed to the BWCAW, mountain bikers, day hikers and so much more. We love hearing their stories— before and after—and helping make sure they have the equipment they need to enjoy every moment in the wild.”
But it’s not just the gear and gifts that customers value; it’s the experts’ valuable insight and advice. Strike up a conversation with any staff member, and you’ll discover what lakes or streams have the best fishing, where to stop for a stunning sunset view and the fact that you really do need to bring that wool cap, even in high summer. You’ll be thankful—and warm—watching the night sky or sleeping under the stars.
For those venturing into the BWCAW, pre-trip prep is truly essential. Even if you’ve got all your own gear packed up and ready to go, stop by a local outfitter before heading out. With a local’s perspective on your route and planned campsites, you’ll have a better idea of what to expect, and you can adjust your plans accordingly.
“We’re absolutely loaded with information, and chances are, we’ve been where you’re planning to go,” said Sarah Lynch, co-owner of Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte, MN. “Insider knowledge is so important for people on their first trip to the BWCAW, but also for experienced campers who are visiting new areas. We know the portages, the lakes and the campsites, and we’re excited to help you make your trip even more memorable.”
Outfitters can set up groups completely for any Cook County adventure, providing equipment, advice on routes or assistance securing permits, if applicable. Or, outfitters can fill equipment gaps with just the right thing—most people don’t own backpacks designed specifically for both portaging and canoeing, for example, but they’re a must in the BWCAW. Having the right tool for the job makes the experience all the better.
When you stop in to return equipment on your way back through town, be sure to share your stories, too. Retailers and outfitters love hearing their customers’ experiences, and you’ll get to relive your adventure again and again. The memories you’re making are meant to be shared.

INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE
NATURE, IN ALL ITS BEAUTY, HAS INSPIRED ARTISTS FOR AS LONG AS HUMANS HAVE WALKED THIS EARTH. THE WAY THE LIGHT SHIMMERS ON THE WATER.
INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE
The gentle sound of waves lapping the shoreline. Trees swaying in the wind. Leaves crunching beneath your feet. The feeling of wonder and awe when you’re in the middle of a forest. Nature is a muse, and it’s no wonder that creatives of all sorts gravitate toward Cook County.
There is an artists’ colony, a traditional folk school and countless expert craftspeople: potters, painters, woodworkers, textile artists and more. There is also a diverse group of musicians that make up a unique and thriving music scene. Blues, rock, acoustic, electronic, country, pop—if you can think of it, you’ll probably hear it in Cook County. Just check out the events calendar. It’s chock-full of live music nearly every night of the week!
Pete Kavanaugh, wildly talented blues-rock guitarist, singer and songwriter, got his start playing in the Twin Cities metro area, but he found a home in the budding music scene in Cook County.
In addition to the abundant inspiration from the landscape, there are a few elements that help foster a thriving music scene in Cook County. Unique to the area is grant support for local venues to hire musicians to play in the bars, lobbies and public spaces throughout the county, which is funded by area tourism associations via lodging tax. This funding support helps provide musicians and venues with resources that allow them to provide music regularly for guests and locals.
There is also a vibrant community radio station with live broadcasting daily. Don’t miss tuning into 90.7 WTIP North Shore Community Radio on your drive up the shore or streaming online to get a sense of the local music culture and upcoming events.
“There’s something unique about playing up here for both locals and tourists. It’s different than anywhere else I’ve played in my career,” Pete said. “With such music-focused venues throughout the county, the visitors come to watch you. They’re focused on the music, which makes musicians step up to put on incredible shows and interact with the crowd on a personal level. It’s amazing to watch new musicians really hone their performance skills and blow the crowd away.”
Pete has recently been working with fellow local musicians to put on Open Stage shows at several venues in the county. There is no setlist or official lineup. Visitors and local musicians can take the stage to play together. It’s a chance to jam, write songs, collaborate, push creative boundaries and make great music.
Kathy Bolstad also had a long journey to the region, first teaching middle and high school band in the Twin Cities and later participating in the Heartland Symphony Orchestra in the Brainerd Lakes area. Upon retiring in the late ‘90s, Kathy and her husband relocated to Grand Marais, and she immediately dove into another aspect of Cook County’s music scene. She joined the North Shore’s concert band and has been instrumental (pun
intended!) in the group’s transformation into the North Shore Swing Band, helping drive its growth and success for the past 25 years.
“In those early days, we struggled to keep playing because we didn’t always have enough musicians. We started looking at different arrangements and styles, and we all thought we’d be a good fit for swing, so we evolved,” Kathy explained. “We kept playing together and finding new musicians. Now, we’re a big band with full trumpet, trombone and saxophone sections. We’ve got a vocalist, drummer, a keyboard player, a guitarist and a bassist. It’s so much fun making music together in this beautiful part of the state.”
The North Shore Swing Band has monthly performances and plays at events throughout Cook County, like the Fisherman’s Picnic and Radio Waves Music Festival. Their shows are lively and fun, and they inspire musicians from all over the county to pick up the instruments they played long ago and reawaken the music lying dormant inside.
In Cook County, music is about collaboration, community, creative expression and finding inspiration in the area all around. With live music nearly every day of the year, Cook County itself is a muse, sparking new sounds, new music and new lyrics to express the passions within us all.
