Process book of Maya 3D animation - by Joan Ma Wing Yuk 05733767D -

Objective This is a Maya animation project for us to explore, applying and reflecting what we have learned in this course. We have to apply the principle amd timing of animation or story telling technique by using some simple geometry form, and it should also match with the selected song and season.

The Story “Bear’s delight” is a story about a selfish polar bear’s life. Since it was getting hot in the North Pole, many icebergs were already disappeared. However, by consider his own delight, this polar bear ignore this facts and still using airconditioner, fan and TV...etc frequently. Since he thought that the weather is really so hot, he jumped into the sea to swim without awaring his energy light was flashing ( that means both the island and the bear are running out of energy). As he was swimming, the light turned off, and he could not move anymore and drown into the deep ocean.

Concept & Descriptions

week 4 - 6

Many people still don’t believe that global warming is getting serious in the recent years, the earth already gave us some signals, just we didn’t aware. People just think we are still safe and keep on destroying the earth. I think this concept is very silly, thus i was looking for a childish song to be my music.

MV idea

After watch the movie “An Inconvenient Truth”, the concept of Global warming was always in my mind, then I started to conceive a story with this topic. The movie has mentioned about the iceberg of North Pole would be melt within servel decade if the people keeps on using those electronic equirpments, those polar bear would probably die of tired because of no more resting place. Therefore, hot, iceberg, and polar bear became the basic elements of my story.

Song selected

SONG PROFILE Name: Track 08 Album EMI KPM music library Genre: Children Time: 60 seconds Format: Mp3 SEASON Summer FEEL & CONCEPT The general feeling of this song is quite childish and rapidly. It makes me think of those fairy tales that would never happen. Moreover, the drumbeat parts draws me a lot of attention. Just like emphasize something or a warning, which I think is match with my story idea.

The character was develop base on the Polar bear image. It represent the silly and selfish part of human. Since he didn’t stop wasting energy even he saw the warning signal given by the nature (iceberg sinking). That’s why he died when running out of energy at the end.

Testing Ripple of the sea ( play blast screen shot) I tried to add some ripple wave to animate the sinking iceberg effects, however, the detail wave should be increase the subdivisions of the sea surfaces. That always make the maya running out of work. And it even not allow me to render. That’s why finally I reduce the subdivisions to 100 uv.

Shadows I think the most kill time things of making maya animation should be lighting and rendering. Sometimes when I render a picture out to check. It does not have matter, but after render a movie out, I found that the shadow will be flashing and with a horrible quality, then should be re test and render again.

Personal review

Apart from learning using Maya, this project gave me a very good chance to learn story telling as well. I’m happy that I could apply my personal message into the story. Altough it might be hard to deliever it completely to the audience, I still tried to do so because I think it would be more interesting. Modeling, animate and rendering also have to spend a lot of time, since we all have work with the other project at the same time, I started to work on this animation a little bit later than the other classmates. However, I really enjoying working on it. I could create what i want in it. On the day I finished the animation, I feel very friutful with what i have done. Even it still has a lot of error, I have already spent most of the time and tried my best. I hope I could have improvement in this summer vacation.
