unique art movement has emerged combining the dynamic and interrelated worlds of comics, anime and hip-hop, with the elements of modern cinema. This movement celebrates its multicultural, international influence on science fiction, action and adventure and other confluences within and surrounding present day artistic culture. This movement is defined by an inspired, original approach to existing media that redefines the media itself. In the spirit of this, we call this new genre “DONŪ” in tribute to the famed hip-hop producer J Dilla whose last work, the magnum opus “Donuts” left an indelible mark on that industry. DONŪ also makes reference to Katsuhiro Otomo’s masterpiece “Domu”. Katsuhiro Otomo has not only revolutionized anime in Japan but he also redefined animation storytelling in the global entertainment environment. On behalf of the DONŪ team, I hope this introduction serves as an invitation. We hope you enjoy this first book and welcomes you to join the movement. With the warmest regards and respect, R. Jackson DONŪ Magazine Founder

designed to explore the effects of an oppressive society on the structure of family. It follows one man’s desperate fight to protect his son and the sanctity of their relationship against a world that would drive them apart. This bust, our first collectible release, seeks to capture the inner strength of the APOLLO character as well as the artistic style of the property’s creator, Grey. The “Metallique” version of this sculpt features metal suspension combined with color infusion hand finished to create a substantial work with a unique reactive luster. action The Book of Eli Denzel Nails Action/Sci-fi

The Book of Eli poster by movie concept artist

The Book of Eli Denzel Nails Action/Sci-fi by Yolande Clark-Jackson Denzel Washington plays Eli, a man who has mastered life in a post-apocalyptic world. He is a traveler, a warrior, a man on a mission. He knows how to hunt for food in a scarce and desolate landscape and can kill a man like a well-trained samurai. He is armed and dangerous, but seems like the most humane man on the planet. This movie has often been compared to the movie, The Road, but this movie follows the character Eli on his journey to find a home for his book. He learns that his book, the last

one like it on Earth, is more powerful than he himself had even imagined when Carnegie, played by Gary Oldman, demands he surrender it. He then realizes that in the wrong hands, his book could damage a whole new generation. The movie than spirals into a battle of Mad Max proportions which for the most

part keeps you on the edge of your seat. Definitely the best parts of the movie were the fight scenes. One scene takes place in a dark tunnel, so all you see is Washington masterfully slaying his opponents in what looks like moving shadows. The weakest scenes were the ones that included Eli’s tag-along, Solana played by actress Mila Sunis. Sunis’ acting isn’t the problem but rather her real purpose in the movie. Her character is portrayed as a suffering young woman who does not look like she has suffered much. She then decides

to join Eli and turns from victim to heroine, and then to a disciple. Not sure if this movie was leading into sequel entitled, The Book of Solana, but her role in the movie seemed to have been a bit over-dramatized. This action-packed drama keeps you hanging on every word and every image and the twist in the movie really makes you want to go back and watch it again. All in all, I would give Washington a 10 and the film a 7. It loses three points for originality, plausibility, and the dragged out Hollywood ending.

huh? According to wiki.answers.com donu is a sexual word that means whore and prostitute this is one of the rudest words in the English dictionary. This word was created when a whore was found in the 1872, and she had had sex with over 100 different men. So when ever a whore sleeps with over 100 different men, they are called a donu.

Thanks to Basic Vocab, there is “A Better Way”. It’s the name of their third album scheduled to drop in March. After “Come Get With It” (A single from their second album) set the tone for a scene in an Entourage episode last season, the

When I asked Tony Galvin (the group’s producer) what their fans are resonding to, he simply said, “Good Vibes.” So if you’re looking for music you can jam in the car, rock to in the cubicle, and blast at the barbeque, then this is it!

anime Robotech: Old School Macross Flashback

35

Robotech An Old School Macross Flashback Aw, Man! Middle school: it was one of the most wonderful, confusing stages of my life. It was filled with pimples, budding teenage girls, hip hop and Robotech. I was in this “magnet” art program at the time, and most of the guys in it were still clinging on to comic books and cartoons for dear life. Not because we were like those comic book geeks. We weren’t simply worshiping the artistic works, there was no doubt in our minds, that one day we would become creators.

I remember comparing drawings and comic collections with my boys in class, with intense debates over who was the hottest chick of the day. That all ended when “she” came into my life. Claudia Grant was more sophisticated than those Marvel or DC girls... and as SDF1’s Chief Communications Officer, she stole my heart. Claudia came from a world different from those cartoons I was used to and brought a sense of order to my hormone

congested teenage existence. The characters from her universe had real life issues, beneath the impending threat of giant alien invaders, that is. She was part of a complex drama that dwarfed the reality of G.I. Joe or Transformers, because it had it all... darting jets that turned into robots, intense battles scenes animated like I’d never seen before, and a chain of command that actually made sense. Not to mention, there was a wide variety of female characters that gave a pulse to this daring animated commentary on love and war. If it were up to me, I would have

kept Claudia safe from the giant Zentradi and given her access to an endless supply of “Protoculture” that I had secretly tucked away somewhere inside my developing teenage frustration. Because to me, she wasn’t just a chick in a costume, she was a whole and intriguing woman. When I think of it, back then I was kind of an old school Macross Mack. Wow... really?... On second thought, maybe I wasn’t too different from those comic book geeks after all.

Pancracia the pimpin’ art of Ryan Benjamin Let’s face it. Online, animated comics are wack! They fall short of animation and you can can’t trade them or get them signed. So what’s the point? If it were up to me I’d round up all the original files and have them burned. At least that’s what I thought until I saw th first episode of Pancratia. OK, so some of the characters look familar. And yes, I would love to see this fully animated. Despite all that, the truth is, I like it. the effects are

well done, the hip hop loop is cool and the underlying score is on point. In fact, It’s better than what I’ve seen the big boys put out. Ryan Bejamin has been working hard, and it shows. I would subscribe to this in a heart beat, no question. He even has a hard-cover book for sale featuring all the concept art that you can trade and get signed if you want. Yeah, Ryan’s pimpin’.

He really is Donu! Donu Arapura is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Purdue University. His ground breaking insight has broadend our understanding of complex donut curves that live in the 4th dimension. He says, “A complex algebraic plane curve is the set of complex solutions to a polynomial equation f(x, y)=0. This is a 1 complex dimensional subset of C2, or in more conventional terms it is a surface living in a space of 4 real dimensions. These objects are also called Riemann surfaces, at least away from the singularities. The study of these objects and their generalizations within algebraic geometry involves a lot of technical material, and it is easy to forget that this is geometry.” Yeah – what he said.
