Our story is one of passionate and dedicated people who love this place and work tirelessly to protect the land so that it can continue to sustain our community, nourish our body and soul, and be a source of inspiration now and long into the future. These lands would not be protected as nature preserves if it werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t for the support of our members who love Door County.

Within these pages, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find outings and events that educate and inspire. For this, our 30th Anniversary, we invite you to celebrate the scenic beauty and ecological diversity that, together, we have protected...forever.

The Explore the Door series offers guided adventures for you to experience the beautiful places you’ve helped the Land Trust protect. Outings are led by trained volunteer hike leaders and/or Land Trust staff. All Explore the Door outings are free of charge and will be held rain or shine. Registration is required. In addition to the hikes listed here, you’ll find new and exciting additions to the hike schedule on our website. To stay informed of upcoming hikes, subscribe to our email newsletter by clicking the link on our website.

The Explorer Series offers special tours led by experts in the fields of ecology, geology and more. The tours generally include a detailed itinerary and may include some meals and transportation with the group. Registration may be through the Door County Land Trust or through the tour leader.

Dining for Open Spaces events are hosted by Land Trust supporters to benefit the Door County Land Trust. Hosts welcome you into their homes or out on the land for brunches, lunches, cocktail parties, and dinners. Most Dining events include a visit to one of Door County’s beautiful open spaces. All proceeds from Dining for Open Spaces events benefit land preservation. See “How to Register” on page 9.

Special events are in a league all their own! The registration process varies widely from event to event and may be coordinated through a partnering organization. Specific instructions are included at the bottom of each special event page.

Friday, June 17 @ 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Throughout Door County, begins in Egg Harbor $100 per person • Open to everyone • 20 Hikers Join Geologist Roger Kuhns and Professional Naturalist Paul Regnier on a special natural history tour exploring the dynamics of the Door County Niagara Escarpment. Highlights include stops and short hikes with comparisons to the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, Canada. We’ll explore linkages between the ecosystems of today with those ancient ecosystems that were present as the Niagara Escarpment formed millions of years ago. We’ll look for fossil indicators of life and climate in the rocks, and put them in context of the natural history of today. An important part of the trip includes discussions about sustainable land use practices. This is a special tour open to the public and it will complement the Door County Land Trust’s tour to the Bruce Peninsula in the fall of 2016 (see page 24 for details). Thursday, June 23 @ 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Throughout Door County, begins in Baileys Harbor $100 per person • Open to everyone • 20 Hikers Door County is blessed with a biodiversity found in few areas in the Upper Midwest. Habitat diversity results in a rich variety of flora and fauna. Today’s hike, to at least three preserves, illustrates forest diversity and forest succession. Learn and explore the natural processes that help support biodiversity and stable forest communities. As we meander through the forest, we’ll discuss signs of past use and where these forests are headed into the future. Comfortable and sturdy footwear recommended. Oak Road Nature Preserve is near the center of the Door Peninsula divide so water drains both northwest and southeast depending on the season and amount of water present. Due to the unique movement, amount and quality of the water that passes through this area, it provides valuable spring and summer habitat for amphibians and wetland birds. There is much to learn about the hydrology, geology, natural and cultural history of this well-loved property. The Oak Road trail is wide and easy and includes an elevated platform where you can look over the marsh pond and maybe even spy on sandhill cranes, geese or ducks.

$25 per person • Open to the public • 24 Guests Join writer/performer/geologist Roger Kuhns for an adventurous afternoon hike at Lautenbach Woods Nature Preserve, followed by an unforgettable performance on the stage at Woodwalk Gallery. Roger will take you on a journey through geologic time, incredible ecosystem survival, and mass extinction events from around the world. You’ll visit the rise and fall of forests, dinosaurs, marine reptiles, and ice age mega-fauna (such as the woolly mammoth), and endeavor to understand what the ecosystems from the past teach us about change and recovery times—vital knowledge to understand what is happening today. This monologue, a piece in progress, is based on his work around the world and the Niagara Escarpment in Wisconsin. Conifers and Hardwoods on Ancient Shorelines Hike

Thursday, July 7 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Kangaroo Lake Nature Preserve, 7912 North Maple Rd Kangaroo Lake lies in a northwest to southeast drainage depression of the Niagara Escarpment. It is fed by Peil Creek and drains into Lake Michigan through Heins Creek. Since the 1800s, lands around Kangaroo Lake have been used for farming and cattle pasture. Today, nearly 700 acres, including both sides of Peil Creek and much of the shoreline along the northern end of the lake, is protected through cooperation between far-sighted landowners, The Nature Conservancy and the Door County Land Trust. Along the trail, you’ll see signs of the human history and of the natural recovery of ecosystems that may have existed before pioneer settlement. The trail leads us through several different ecosystems in various stages of recovery. This area is fragile wetland and forest habitat for diverse wildlife. The easy to moderate trail slopes gently to the lake where you can see the water. Bring your friends and family for a shady summer walk with experienced guides. Plum Island Range Light and Ecology Tour

Saturday, July 9 @ 9:30 am – 3:30 pm Alternate weather date: July 10 Choose from Morning: 9:00 am – 1:30 pm OR Afternoon: 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm Shoreline Charter Marina, Gills Rock $85 per person • Open to everyone • 16 Guests Between Washington Island and the tip of Gills Rock lies Plum Island and its famous lighthouse. Built in 1895, the lighthouse has a rich maritime history, but Plum Island itself is full of natural treasures. The small island is home to migratory and nesting birds, a small wetland complex, and diverse plant and wildlife habitat. We’ll dock at the old Coast Guard Station and take a short tour before walking to the Plum Island Lighthouse. Once at the lighthouse, members of the Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands will talk about the island and its rich history. Land in Transition: Farm and Field to Cedar Forest and Bat Sanctuary

Today, the story of the Three Springs Nature Preserve is rich in both local and statewide conservation history. On this informative walk, our hike leaders will focus on how we are working with nature to restore agricultural lands by leveraging the natural resilience of native trees. This white cedar forest is home to dwarf lake iris and showy lady slipper. The nature preserve is an important part of the larger ecosystem around Three Springs where perch, bass, salmon and pike swim upstream from North Bay to spawn. Richter ferry to view some of Door County’s most stunning scenery. We’ll begin by crossing Death’s Door and cruising around Plum, Pilot and Detroit Islands. Terrie Cooper, the Land Trust’s Land Program Director, will share highlights of the Land Trust’s work on area islands and its ecological significance. Our captain, Hoyt Purinton, may share some island lore of his own. Stone, Water, Glaciers and Waves Day Tour

Farm to Nature Preserve: History and Transition Hike Thursday, August 4 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Legacy Nature Preserve at Clay Banks, 1188 South Lake Michigan Dr Free • Members only • 20 Hikers The beautiful fields, woods and shore of the Legacy Nature Preserve are protected through the heartfelt generosity of Nancy and Susan Kreuter. Through the Door County Land Trust, they created a permanent legacy to their parents and especially their mother, who “loved all things natural.” This 90-acre preserve contains an old field, a white cedar wetland, meandering stream and the big red clay bluff bordering over one-half mile of Lake Michigan. Now that the old alfalfa field is no longer cultivated, in August it will be awash with tall grasses and young woody plants. This is a good time to walk an easy-to-moderate trail while experienced hike leaders share their knowledge of the natural transition going on before your eyes. Meet for a brief orientation for the day and then head off to your choice of activity—kayaking along Detroit Harbor or hiking at the Little Lake Nature Preserve. On June 7, 1986, the Door County Land Trustees (now the Door County Land Trust) was incorporated. Virtually unknown in the county, the future was uncertain for this fledgling organization. But…in November of 1986, Baileys Harbor landowner Ruth Neuman had faith in the land trust ideal and became the first person in Door County to donate a conservation easement agreement to the Land Trust. Her 115-acre parcel became the first property protected by the newly formed organization. Since then, landowners and members have joined the effort to protect more than 7,000 acres of fields, forests, farmlands, orchards, wetlands and shoreline. How can the Land Trust protect and revive the vital habitat and serene scenery at the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Nature Preserve? Today, research and restoration are going hand in hand. In the spring, birder teams record breeding bird counts and gauge the birds’ response to largescale invasive plant removal. Spend the afternoon learning the history of the canal and the part Door County Land Trust has played in the preservation of this Door County treasure. Natural landscapes are dynamic by design. Change is constant, though at times slow and predictable– unless non-native invasive species are introduced into the system. Today’s hike focuses on the relationships and impacts of non-native invasive species, restoration efforts and the abilities of landscapes to recover on Land Trust properties. Examples of restoration work and identification of invasive and native plant species are included. We’ll also discuss the importance of intact natural habitats to the Door County landscape. The afternoon begins with either a guided hike along the lakeshore or a tour of the Boynton Chapel, a 1940s replica of the 12th century Norwegian-style Stavekirk chapels. Our concert, the Brahms-Kahn Connection, features works by German composers Johannes Brahms and Robert Kahn, and American composer Arthur Foote. The concert begins at 3 pm with a champagne toast in the Vail Room and concludes with a social hour, hors d’oeuvres and light sweets. Proceeds from the event benefit both Midsummer’s Music and the Door County Land Trust. At the north end of Sturgeon Bay’s steel bridge, you’ll find the heart of the city’s arts community with artist Margaret Lockwood’s fresh new gallery, the studio and gallery of glass artists Jeremy Popelka and Stephanie Trenchard, and the Holiday Music Motel’s intimate stage for singer-songwriters. Tour the new gallery, performance space, and home of Allin Walker and Margaret Lockwood. Enjoy a dinner of savory slow-cooked brisket, vegetarian entrée, and fresh salads while listening to live music with local singer-songwriter talent. After dinner, tour Popelka Trenchard Glass Studio, where sweet treats and after dinner beverages will be served. People and Plants: Invasives and Solutions Hike Saturday, Sept 10 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am Bay Shore Blufflands Nature Preserve, 5454 Bay Shore Drive Free • Open to everyone • 20 Hikers Plant diversity is the mother of healthy wildlife habitat, but common invasive plants can upset the natural balance and have wide-ranging consequences. It is true that humans are often both the cause and the cure to invasive species problems. At the Blufflands Preserve, dedicated volunteer crews are making a dramatic difference, as year after year, they clear away invasive exotic shrubs. Did you know that Door County’s unique ridges and swales can be found at the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Nature Preserve? Dunes and valleys called swales are now visible where ancient waves once battered the sand. The Land Trust’s Land Restoration Specialist Jodi Milske will guide us as we explore the nature preserve and its extraordinary cultural and natural history. After the hike, we’ll gather for lunch at the Richards’ family log home and summer cottages, north of the canal, where ridge and swale formations continue along the lakeshore. The smell and flavor of exotic Brazilian barbecue and sample tastings of the traditional Brazilian drink, caipirinha, make a perfect pairing for the sandy dunes and summer day along the lakeshore.

Have you ever heard of Picha Woods? This 40-acre property northeast of Egg Harbor was generously donated by the Picha family and is now protected by the Land Trust. This site is part of a little known Wisconsin State Natural Area that surrounds Thorp Pond, where sedges, native grasses and a diverse plant community thrive. Enjoy walking this natural area to learn about its vegetation, plus the hydrological connections to Thorp Pond.
