If you’re part of one of the 2.5 million weddings expected to happen this year, congratulations! Not only are you part of the biggest wedding boom in nearly 40 years (according to Wedding Report), but you also have a love story for the ages.

Some of you are finally able to celebrate – having postponed your wedding once or maybe even twice during the past two years – while others are now part of the exclusive “pandemic proposal club.” Despite all the coronavirusdriven uncertainty, one truth has remained steadfast: Love perseveres.

As we sat down to plan the fourth edition of Door Wedding magazine, one thing was clear: People still want to get married and celebrate, whether it’s with a guest list of 200 or just two. But why Door County? Those of us who live here know what we love about the area we call home, but what attracts thousands of couples to the peninsula every year to tie the knot?

We invite you to look for the answer by paging through this issue. Not only is it brimming with inspiration and helpful hints for your big day – such as how to keep your hair camera ready all day long (page 34) or tips for choosing the best attire for a destination wedding (page 70) – but it’s also filled with local flavor.

We hope you feel inspired by the stories of the real-life couples who are featured and also sense the creativity, passion and pride that our area vendors pour into each and every wedding they help bring to life.

One of the bartenders featured in “Raise a Glass to the Local Bar-Service Team” (page 80) summed it up best when he said, “Who better to help them than someone who lives here?”

Sawyers celebrate five generations of Door County weddings

hen your family roots in Door County run six generations deep, the question isn’t whether you will host your wedding on the peninsula – it’s where

“The Sawyer side of my family is very large,” Katie (Sawyer) Helscher said. “Trying to nd a venue that could t us was a challenge. There just wasn’t a place in the area big enough to hold us.”

Then one day, she looked at the old dairy barn on the family farm – the same one where she had played as a child – and had an idea.

“I asked my dad if we could clean out the old barn and use it as a wedding venue,” she said.

Though the farm had stopped its dairy operations in the mid-1980s, Helscher’s

father, John Sawyer, still raised cattle on the property.

“When Katie and Mark came to us and asked about having the wedding in the barn, there were cattle everywhere, and the barn was full of hay,” Sawyer recalled.

But as the former owner of CarlsonErickson Builders and a contractor for

Helscher’s parents, John and Jackie Sawyer, were married in 1982 in Sister Bay at St. Rosalia’s Church, which is now LURE Restaurant.

“I thought it was so interesting for the weddings of my great-grandparents that the brides and grooms both wore black,” Helscher said.

Brides used to wear any color for their wedding gown, but not because it was the latest fashion trend. It was simply more practical: The dress could be worn for more than one occasion, plus a darker color would not show dirt as easily as a lighter-colored dress.

After the farm stopped its dairy operation in the 1980s, Sawyer continued to raise cattle, the barn used to store hay. Over the course of eight months, the barn received a complete makeover into a rustic-chic wedding venue.

more than 30 years, Sawyer welcomed the challenge.

“Design and architecture are something I enjoy,” he said. “It didn’t take me long to envision the old granary being converted to a bar area, or guring out where the dance oor would be.”

The winter was spent cleaning out the barn and renovating the space. By July of 2014, just eight months later, the “wedding barn” was ready to welcome family and friends back to the farm. For Sawyer, hosting his daughter’s wedding on the farm where he grew up was special because it was an opportunity to connect the generations.

“Generation wise, my great-grandparents on my mom and dad’s side were all married up here,” he said.

Sawyer and his wife, Jackie, also wed in Door County in 1982, with their reception being the last one held at the Greenwood Supper Club in Gibraltar.

“We had a seven-piece orchestra band in there and 350-400 guests – so many we had to have two seating times for food,” Sawyer said.

The ceremony that preceded the dinner was at Sister Bay’s St. Rosalia’s Church, which is now LURE Restaurant.

For many peninsula locals, the decision to host their wedding in Door County is connected to family pride, as well as pride in their community.

“It truly feels like a community of family here,” said Helscher, who used as many local vendors as possible to bring the vision for her and her husband's wedding to life.

But it was more than a vision brought to life that Saturday in July nearly eight years ago: Life was brought back to the farm.

“A er my grandma Millie Sawyer, who lived on the farm, had to be moved to Scandia Village for long-term care, I remember having a small picnic with our family on the farm and thinking this would be the last time we’d ever gather there,” Helscher said.

Being able to have friends and family together on the farm once again – a place that held many memories and celebrations over the generations – “it was a dream come true,” Helscher said.

“Now, being able to build my own family here, it’s like paying homage to all those who came before us.”

When we got engaged, the most important part of our wedding planning was, of course, finding the right venue. We wanted somewhere luxurious and modern, while warm and inviting. We loved the idea of being married among nature, but wanted an indoor space to account for fickle Midwest weather. In short, somewhere to be the perfect backdrop for one of the most important days of our lives.

When we found Northern Haus, it was as if someone had designed it just for us. Tucked away in northern Door County, Wisconsin, it’s far enough from the city to feel like a destination, but close enough to be convenient for our family and guests. The drive up took us through cherry and apple orchards, then quiet forested roads that opened to the Northern Haus venue itself; a beautiful white barn in a field dotted with wildflowers.

We were immediately in love with the location. Northern Haus has seemingly unlimited photo opportunities onsite, from the large, light-filled indoor space to the wooded forest retreat.We

knew immediately we wanted to be married there, in the quiet, grassy clearing surrounded by the forest and our loved ones.

For our reception, we chose the large Gambrel Room for dinner and dancing. The white walls and tall ceilings were the perfect high-end backdrop for our decor, and our guests loved the covered porch for a quiet place to enjoy cocktails and chat. Our friends are still talking about the menu we chose with Northern Haus’ exclusive catering partners, and the custom, hand- crafted cocktails served with signature Midwestern charm.

or Brooke Rawlins and Matt Sampson, choosing to host their September 2021 wedding in Door County was a natural and easy choice.

“Stand on any beach, at any overlook, on the top of any bluff, or in the middle of any field and look around,” Rawlins said.

In addition to the surrounding beauty, choosing to say “I do” in Door County was a way for the couple to weave in elements of their ties to the area, both individually and as a couple.

“My paternal grandfather and grandmother took my dad and his two brothers to Door County as children,” Rawlins said. “My dad remembers driving north on 42, down the hill and descending onto Main Street in Fish Creek as a young boy.”

Fast forward to today, and a house on that very road is now Sister Golden, the retail store Rawlins owns with her mom.

During the years between, Rawlins’ father introduced her mother to the area, and later Rawlins introduced Sampson to the peninsula. In 2016, Rawlins and Sampson decided to call Door County home and lived above Sister Golden for the first few years before buying a home in Baileys Harbor.

As a part of the community, one nonnegotiable for the couple's wedding was working with as many local vendors as they could. And despite Door County’s remote and rural location, it wasn’t hard to do.

“You don’t have to look far,” Rawlins said. “There is so much talent in this community. There is zero reason to source outside of the peninsula.”

In deciding on the vision for their wedding, Rawlins and Sampson let the peninsula’s vibe lead them: warm, natural, nothing too fussy.

“I am not the girl who’s been dreaming about her wedding since she was

little,” Rawlins said. “I didn’t have a fully developed vision waiting to be brought to life.”

What she – and Sampson – did know, however, was that they wanted an outdoor wedding.

“How could you not want to be outside in September in Door County?” Rawlins said.

Garden Gables, an old-farmstead-turnedwedding-venue in Sister Bay, offered the laid-back, organic vibe they were looking for.

“There are many gorgeous venues in Door County, but Garden Gables just felt very us. We saw it, and we knew,” Rawlins said.

From there, the couple let the natural beauty and allure of the venue guide the rest of their plans, with some suggestions from venue owner Kayla Larsen.

“She knows her space so well,” Rawlins said. “We trusted our vision with her, and she helped us cultivate it to the fullest.”

When the day arrived, 60 guests gathered to celebrate the couple. And although the venue could easily have accommodated twice that number, keeping the guest list small amplified the warm and cozy atmosphere of the space. Inside, simply chic décor tied everything together.

Like many couples, Rawlins and Sampson thought they would opt for the popular “first look” moment until Rawlins’ mom questioned the idea a few weeks before the wedding.

“It made us think again about the special moment that is Matt seeing me for the first time as I turn the corner to walk down the aisle,” Rawlins said. “We thought this could be a sweet memory, so we decided against the ‘first look.’”

“I knew how gorgeous she would look walking down the aisle,” Sampson said, “but that moment still blew me away.”

For this couple, less meant more, so Rawlins said she actually made an effort to not have their wedding look like it was plucked from a Pinterest board.

“While we could have chosen to go above and beyond with florals, lights, customized linens, glassware, etc., I knew it wasn’t in

our budget,” Rawlins said. “And honestly, it wasn’t important to me.”

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the details of the day. For that, Rawlins o ered this advice: “Decide what is most important to you, and work in those things first. Everything else can be worked into place around it.”

Tapping into the insight of local vendors can also alleviate planning paralysis. When Rawlins felt herself getting caught up in the minutiae of the day, she handed the reins to her vendors for their expertise.

“If [Kayla] thought one thing over another would work best, we said yes to it,” Rawlins said. “Those were the details we didn’t need to get caught up in.”

Planning Pointer

Don’t make decisions based on how something is going to look in a photo. Choose something because you truly like it and it feels good to you.

They shared their vision with their vendors and trusted their wisdom and experience, and together they cultivated the vision to its full potential.

Looking back on the day, there isn’t anything the newlyweds would change about their plans. In fact, they would encourage other engaged couples to follow their lead by choosing local whenever possible.

“[Ask yourself], what are your favorite things about this wonderful area, and how can you collaborate with local business owners to make them part of your special day?” Rawlins asked. “You chose to have your wedding here, so commit to it fully.”

Rawlins and Sampson asked a close friend to o ciate the ceremony as an added special touch to the day. “We would recommend having a good friend o ciate your wedding,” the couple said. “Looking through our wedding photos and seeing a familiar face standing at the altar with us, as opposed to someone we didn’t know well, is quite special.”

“We were able to achieve [a feeling of] cozy elegance with simple table settings, flowers and greenery repurposed from the ceremony, and an added touch of tealights and candle sconces that warmed everything up,” Rawlins said.

very couple wants to give their wedding day a unique spin – something that their guests will remember. Ashley Lanyon and Harter Clingman were no exception, though as two creatives, they may have had an advantage in coming up with ways to add their own signature stamp to their “I dos.”

Both company members at Peninsula Players Theatre in Fish Creek for several years, Lanyon and Clingman knew they wanted their “home away from home” to play a special role in their celebration. But how that would unfold wasn’t exactly clear when the couple started planning shortly after becoming engaged in October 2019. In fact, Lanyon recalled being unable to envision their wedding day.

“I had this very weird feeling in early 2020, like I couldn’t visualize what the wedding would become,” she said.

Initially, the couple thought they would have a guest list of about 150 people, complete with all the traditional trimmings – a tented reception, seated dinner, rehearsal dinner, the usual speeches.

“Instead, the celebration became about honoring our own values as a couple,” Clingman said.

That meant editing the guest list to include only those people the couple knew personally.

“Our goal was to look out and only see people we knew, loved and felt supported by,” Clingman said.

When it came to navigating the plusones or significant others included on some of their invitations, Lanyon and Clingman used FaceTime to get to know those people ahead of time.

“Of course, all of that was turned on its head,” Lanyon said.

Like so many couples who became engaged in 2019, Lanyon and Clingman found themselves planning a wedding in the middle of a global pandemic, which meant scrapping their original plans and instead holding two events: a small commitment ceremony at Lanyon’s childhood home in Minnesota during the summer of 2020, followed by a larger gathering with family and friends in Door County in 2021.

“I think the easiest part of planning our wedding [during that time] was knowing it needed to happen,” Clingman recalled.

What they didn’t expect was the gi their wedding’s micro guest list would give them.

“Wow, was it amazing to know that every single person present was someone very near and dear to us,” Lanyon said.

The small-scale a air also a orded the couple big opportunities to make the day highly personalized, including a “ring-warming ceremony” and a variety show put on by their friends.

“We didn’t have our wedding bands made in time for our 2020 ceremony,” Lanyon said, “so honoring them [by] passing them between all our friends in attendance was a lovely way to involve something ceremonial.”

And at the reception, friends –actors, musicians, comedians –entertained with songs, poems, stand-up acts and speeches. Cocktails, lawn games and dinner rounded out the highly customized celebration.

“We spent a lot of time [while planning] talking about how intentional we wanted to be with our time,” Lanyon said.

That mindful mindset extended to selecting their vendors. From the rural and relaxed setting of Garden Gables to the locally sourced dinner catered by Door County Underground, each aspect of the day was selected in an e ort to support and create a carefully curated representation of Door County.

“We love hiking and the outdoors; we love great food; we love small businesses; we love theater, music and visual art,” Clingman said. “These are all the things Door County has in abundance.”

Looking back on their wedding day, Lanyon now understands why she initially struggled to picture the day – and she couldn’t be more thankful.

“I have since come to understand that this was because everything was going to change,” she said, “and very much for the better.”

and brings them together to create something new and forward looking.

But used as a fashion color, Very Peri’s energetic personality may be more of a trendsetter than some couples want to immortalize in their wedding photos. If that’s the case, the key is incorporating it in the details: subtle nods that enhance, not detract, from what should really be center stage that day.

Maximize the Ability to Accessorize

Because of Very Peri’s bold con dence, you don’t need a lot of it to make a statement. Think small, but intentionally placed pops of color within argyle or geometric patterned socks, embroidered on the trim of a pocket handkerchief, as the focal point of a hair comb or even in a piece of jewelry. All are subtle, yet striking ways to make this year’s crème de la color really stand out. So go ahead: Take a chance on Very Peri this wedding season. You might nd true love all over again.

“Tie” It All Together

Pairing a light gray, charcoal gray or even tan suit with a white dress shirt and a solid necktie or bow tie in the striking Color of the Year is a sure bet. Or, consider showing o this year’s winner with a necktie or bowtie in a fun paisley or geometric print set against a periwinkle-inspired gingham, checked or striped dress shirt. The trendy combination makes the look both complete and distinctive.

Think Accents

A gray or charcoal suit with ne purple or lavender pinstripes – or, for the more adventurous, a suit with a purple background o set by gray or lavender pinstripes – is one way to show o Pantone’s pick without risking the groom or groomsmen striking too close

of a resemblance to Willy Wonka. That’s not to say that a monochromatic look can’t be done, especially when you match it with sleek straight or tapered trousers and a single-breasted jacket. Keep the lapels narrow for a nished look that’s even more mod.

Bridesmaids may have it a little easier because hues that closely resemble Very Peri have been trending for the past few years. Consider incorporating a muted version of the color into bridesmaid dresses or even a splash of it as part of the bride’s attire.

Flowers are an easy way to add a splash of Very Peri (or any color of the year). Incorporate them into bouquets or boutonnieres to make an eye-catching statement, or for a toned-down approach, weave the color into pieces of the reception’s floral décor.

Look flawless all day long

It’s your wedding day, and you know all eyes will be on you. So of course you want to make sure every part of your ensemble looks photo ready, your hair included. Here’s what you need to know to keep your style salon fresh from day to night.

Be Inspired

If you’re having trouble deciding on how to style those locks, take a cue from what you’ll be wearing.

• Classic chic

If wearing a dress with higher lace or a halter-style neckline, consider pulling long hair up to the middle back of the head to show off the dress’s detail. A sleek ponytail, effortless low bun or smooth blowout are also solid choices.

• Hopeless romantic

If the motif is more romantic and loose, consider showcasing tousled waves or framing your face with soft texture.

• Boho vibes

Think loose braids, flower crowns (which are making a comeback) and undone updos.

Complement, Don’t Compete

Do you want to feel like a comfortable, but more glammed-up version of yourself? Do you want to look in the mirror and be totally wowed? Or do you want to find yourself somewhere in between? Whichever look you’re after, your hair should complement it, not compete with it.

Now is also not the time to try a new cut or wildly different hair color. Try to finalize any hair-color goals at least six weeks prior to the nuptials.

Don’t Stress about Long Tresses

Although many bridal hairstyles depict long, windswept waves or loose, romantic updos, long hair isn’t a prerequisite for wedding-day hair that wows. But if you’re after a longer hair

style, here are a few tips to make it happen.

• Fake it till you make it

Unless you want to wear your hair all down or make it signi cantly longer, hair extensions might be the perfect hair hack to add fullness, length and volume. Tip: Opt for extensions made from human hair so they can be colored and heat styled to match your own hair.

• Grow it out

If you do decide to grow out your hair, regular trims and curbing heat-styling habits can keep your hair in better condition while it grows.

Get Inspired

A picture really does speak a thousand words, especially if you lack the right vocabulary to convey to your stylist the look you’re a er.

Do your research

Ask yourself what you’ve seen that you really like, and begin gathering images. Just keep in mind that the photo is inspiration, not an instruction manual. Your hair’s individual color, texture, length and density all play into the nished product.

It’s the piece of jewelry you’ll wear for a lifetime, so why not make it uniquely yours? Even if you don’t know the first thing about jewelry design, it’s not as difficult as you think to create a one-ofa-kind symbol of your love.

“I didn’t have many daydreams about my wedding growing up,” said Ashley Lanyon (see page 24), “but I had always

envisioned the Adirondacks being involved somehow.”

That vision materialized in the shape of Lanyon's and husband Harter Clingman’s engagement and wedding bands. Both are engraved mountain ridgelines that are visible from the front porch of Lanyon’s family cabin in the Adirondacks.

Traditions: Keep ’em, Break ’em or Make ’em

Bride Mackenzie Straub (see page 50) grew up in an interfaith household, celebrating both Catholic and Jewish traditions. Though she and husband Andrew Markham created a nonreligious ceremony, they incorporated some Jewish traditions throughout the celebration, including breaking the glass at the end of the wedding ceremony and dancing the hora at the reception.

Regan Northrop and David Pagone kept some traditions – especially those surrounding the church ceremony – but skipped many of the customs surrounding the reception.

“We kept all the first dances, but other than that, we left out a lot of the cliché traditions – the bouquet toss, the garter toss – [things] we thought were more of a distraction from the dancing and fun,” Northrop said.

Usually a play on the couple’s names, wedding hashtags help you organize photos from your wedding that guests share on social media. Use the same one for your entire wedding journey, or have different ones for the various events leading up to the big day, such as a wedding shower and bachelor/ bachelorette parties.

Start by brainstorming as a couple. Write down your names, your wedding date and a few fun facts about you as a couple. Then write down all the wedding or love-related phrases you can think of. Compare the two lists to see whether any elements intersect in a punny way.

And if you’re really at a loss for coming up with something clever, never fear – just head to one of the many online wedding-hashtag generators such as weddinghashers.com.

The Wedding Party

Choosing your wedding party can be one of the more important decisions of your wedding planning. If you’re having a hard time choosing, there’s good news: There’s no wrong or right way. Take a cue from what these couples did.

Five bridesmaids and six groomsmen made up the wedding party for Brooke Rawlins and Matt Sampson (see page 18).

“[It was] an uneven number, but that didn’t matter to us,” Rawlins said.

“A good friend of mine told me that her bridesmaids were all people who had seen her through a certain season of life. I had this sentiment in my head when deciding who would stand by my side.

Northrop and Pagone did something similar.

“Dave has a ton of great friends from high school,” Northrop said, “so he knew he would have a big wedding party.”

Northrop, on the other hand, felt more comfortable asking only a few very good friends to be bridesmaids.

“We decided it would be okay that we weren’t balanced,” she said, “so I had five, and he had eight, along with two ushers.”

Other couples such as Straub and Markham chose to cast traditional titles and roles to the side, asking close friends of the opposite sex to stand by their side.

Straub’s side of the wedding party consisted of her sister Kylie as her maid of honor and best friends Jordan and Hannah as bridesmaids.

“We truly had our most important people standing by our side that day,” Straub said.

Raise a Glass to Signature Drinks

One simple way to lend a personal touch to your wedding day is to serve a signature cocktail or mocktail.

When selecting a signature drink, Alex Cole, beverage specialist for Door County Event Planners, said the best place to start is with what you like to drink.

“When working with a couple to design their bar package, I like to tell them to not overthink it. What do you like to drink when you go out? O en the signature drinks we serve aren’t anything that unusual, but instead a fun twist on something the bride or groom likes to drink.”

Take the personalization a step further by adding a Door County twist.

“So that might be a Moscow Mule with Door County cherry vodka, or something as simple as a champagne toast with a fresh cherry in the glass and cherry avoring added in,” Cole said.

Best of Both Worlds

oth small and large weddings have their perks. Smaller gatherings provide an opportunity to be more intentional with the guest list and allow ample time to visit with those who attend.

On the other hand, larger weddings are a great way to accommodate big families, ensuring that no one feels slighted for not receiving an invitation. A larger event is also helpful if you have several siblings or close friends whom you want to include in the wedding party. Plus, who doesn’t love a good party?

But what about creating a day that incorporates the best aspects of both? That’s exactly what Regan Northrop and David Pagone did for their wedding on Sept. 24, 2021 – and Sept. 25, 2021.

“One of my pet peeves of going to weddings is the in-between time between the ceremony and reception,” Northrop said.

That prompted the couple to initially look for one venue where they could host both the ceremony and the reception.

“But with that, we are both religious and have wanted to get married in the church since we were little,” Northrop said.

The solution? The couple chose to do a small church ceremony with a limited number of family members and friends on Friday before the rehearsal dinner, followed by a larger ceremony and reception with an extended guest list on Saturday.

“It all seemed to flow the way the ‘day before’ the wedding should,” Northrop said. “We just technically got married.”

Although the invitations to Friday’s ceremony were kept to 60 of the couple’s nearest and dearest, Saturday’s event

Say “I do” to stealing a moment for just the two of you.

“We took a moment before dinner and went out into the field with our photographer to take some sunset photos,” Northrop recalled.

The sunset was less than spectacular, so instead, the couple used the time to practice their first dance.

“Kim left us after a little bit, but she sure did get some funny pictures of us dancing on logs by ourselves. Those turned out to be some of my favorite photographs.”

The couple skipped the “first look,” opting instead to write the other a note to read while getting ready, and they surprised each other with a gift. Pagone surprised Northrop with her wedding band, which he selected himself, and Northrop gave Pagone a gift that had once belonged to his late grandmother.

The couple chose to marry in a small church ceremony surrounded by family and friends the day before their larger celebration.

welcomed 175 guests – a number the couple said felt perfect for a larger celebration.

“We wanted to be able to talk to everyone there, so we didn’t want [the guest list] to be too big where that couldn’t happen,” they said.

At fewer than 200 guests, the evening had all the vibes of a fun party, without overwhelming the couple or making

guests feel unappreciated. The other perk of planning back-to-back wedding celebrations of di erent sizes was that it o ered something for everyone.

“The Friday ceremony meant so much to our families,” Northrop said. “I think it was more emotional having a smaller group.”

It also helped to curb some “wedding jitters,” allowing the couple to truly live in the moment of the day.

“Technically, we were already married [Saturday],” Northrop said. With some of the butterflies and nervousness out of the way, Saturday’s event became a celebration of gratitude.

“Something we will remember forever [is] seeing every single person who has influenced our lives in some way all in one room celebrating us,” Northrop said. “When you look back on that, it’s a pretty cool thought.”

The Ties that Bind

ou may be able to take the person out of Door County, but you can’t take Door County out of the person. Especially when your family tree has roots that go back several generations in the area.

Though Bay Toft-Dupuy and Brian Hennes live in California, both knew they wanted to have their Aug. 28, 2021, wedding ceremony at Toft Point in Baileys Harbor in honor of Toft-Dupuy’s family connection to Toft Point and Door County.

“We couldn’t think of a more special place to wed than at the same site ToftDupuy’s parents wed in 1983,” Brian Hennes said.

That site was Toft Point: 740 acres that Toft-Dupuy’s relatives worked to preserve, including more than two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and 325 acres of old-growth forest.

“Toft Point is a special place to my family,” Toft-Dupuy said. “[I] grew up

learning about the Tofts that settled in the area and hiking the old-growth forest there with my family.”

The eco-conscious couple also saw eye to eye with their decision to keep the rest of the wedding wish list simple, intentional and small. The only aspect of planning where the couple differed was just how small of a wedding they wanted.

“Brian would have been OK with just us, the officiant and the witnesses,” ToftDupuy joked.

In the end, the couple had fewer than 30 guests in attendance, which, in their opinion, was ideal. Not only did the small guest list minimize traffic at the environmentally sensitive ceremony site, but it also simplified logistics for the rest of the weekend. Transportation is generally one of the biggest challenges couples face when planning a Door County wedding.

“Options seemed limited at first, but it didn’t end up being an issue for our event,” said Toft-Dupuy, who relied on guest carpools to take guests to Toft Point for the ceremony and Door County Trolley to transport guests between wedding events in Fish Creek and Sister Bay.

Minimizing their carbon – and actual – footprint was just one way ToftDupuy and Brian Hennes infused their weekend with personalized touches that reflected who they are as a couple and individuals.

“We knew we wanted to focus on minimizing waste,” Toft-Dupuy said.

Employing the “leave no trace” principles, the couple chose to forgo chairs and infrastructure at the preserved natural area, and guests walked the one-mile unpaved path to the location. For the reception held at Whistling Swan in Fish Creek, ToftDupuy and Hennes asked their florist to create mason-jar arrangements they

Knowing which elements of the day were most important to them — and letting their values guide those decisions — made the planning signi cantly easier.

“We knew the reception is typically the biggest budget item, and we were OK with splurging on good food and wine,” they said.

With that larger expense in mind, the couple prioritized from there.

“Floral arrangements the guests could take home and photography were the most important to us,” To -Dupuy said.

A one-time-use dress, not so much.

“Everything adds up quickly,” ToDupuy added, “so it helped to focus on what wedding-day aspects mattered most to us as a couple.”

A Tale of Two Venues

he key to a happy marriage is compromise, or so the saying goes. In many ways, planning a wedding can be perfect practice for exactly that.

So when Mackenzie Straub envisioned a large wedding surrounded by all the couple’s friends and family, but her then- ancé, Andrew Markham, said he wanted a more intimate ceremony and

reception, they turned their focus to what they could agree on: keeping the wedding locally sourced.

“It was natural for us to be married in Door County,” Straub said, “not only because of its beauty and because it is our home, but also to support all of the local vendors who work tirelessly throughout the year.”

Straub was born in Door County and has lived here most of her life. Markham moved to Door County in 2016 and instantly fell in love with the area’s slower pace, abundance of natural beauty and small-town charm.

“The biggest thing that changed from my initial vision was we started thinking less is more,” Straub said. “We quickly realized not everything we saw online was feasible and had to adapt to this mindset shi .”

budget. By shi ing their collective focus to using local vendors wherever they could, Straub and Markham were able to prioritize and plan other aspects of the day with ease.

“We put our budget into local vendors as much as possible,” Straub said, even for the small details such as the reception placeholders and guest favors. That investment paid dividends for the couple, who said the personal attention they received from their vendors exceeded all expectations.

“Whether that be the hotels, the waitsta at the rehearsal dinners, your

vendors for the day – they will all make sure everything is perfect,” Straub said.

Because of the peninsula’s relatively remote location and small size, some couples may think Door County lacks the necessary vendors or has limited choices. Not true, said Straub and Markham.

“We have so much talent on our peninsula that should be taken advantage of,” Straub said.

As for the couple’s nal decision on the size of their wedding? Door County o ered a solution for that, too. The

couple reached a compromise, choosing to host a small-scale ceremony at Sunset Beach in Fish Creek, surrounded by 40 of their closest friends and family members, followed by a larger reception that featured an expanded guest list at the Sister Bay Marina.

“Both Sunset Beach Park and Sister Bay Marina capture the beauty of Door County,” Straub said. “Both o ered us the outdoor space and the exibility to create the wedding we dreamed of.”

Creating a Hyper-local Wedding

or Carly King, “summer” and “Fish Creek” are synonymous.

“I grew up boating the peninsula with my whole family and extended family,” she said. “Fish Creek has always held my heart as one of my favorite places.”

Though King hails from southeastern Wisconsin, Door County is her second home – a place filled with just as many childhood memories.

“One tradition my family has held on to, no matter how far or where we all

moved, is [spending] Fourth of July in Fish Creek,” she said.

Every year, the holiday becomes a family reunion as family members travel to the area from near and far to experience Door County and all their

favorite places, among them Sunset Beach Park in Fish Creek.

Most popular for its – you guessed it –sunsets, the small park on the western edge of town overlooks the water, and its wooded, winding path transports guests to a simpler, more relaxed time. When Brian Bortmess proposed, King needed no time to decide where she wanted them to say, “I do.”

“I have not experienced a better sunset in such a calming environment,” she said. “It was a no-brainer that this was exactly where I was going to exchange vows with my husband.”

But as the couple began to plan the wedding ceremony, they realized that

Fish Creek could also provide the perfect environment for the entire wedding day.

For the reception, King and Bortmess wanted to do something traditional to Door County. A sh boil at Pelletier’s, located within walking distance from the ceremony site, not only lled that bill, but alleviated any transportation issues.

A er the dinner, some of the 65 guests meandered to Fish Creek Beach to continue the festivities in a relaxed and casual setting. The entire celebration was kept within a half-mile radius and less than a 10-minute walk.

“We wanted to keep everything personal and focused on small business to support the local community we have enjoyed for years,” King said.

In addition to venues, the couple used all Door County vendors, from dinner and cake to owers and photos. The result was an intimate, small-town celebration lled with a palpable Door County vibe.

“We knew we wanted an intimate wedding with our closest friends and family and [to be able] to spend quality time with everyone throughout the weekend,” King said. “But mostly, we wanted to share this little piece of our hearts with them.”

From Seed to Bouquet

I remember sitting across a table from the florist, inspiration photos in hand. My wedding was in July, and I had my heart set on the gorgeous bouquet I’d found in a magazine: a lush, loosely held bunch of greenery and white-petaled flowers with black centers.

“Those are anemones, and they aren’t in season in July,” the florist informed me gently, pointing to the flowers.

Anemones? In season? But didn’t people just buy flowers year-round? As I learned, the answer was yes … and no. Although it is possible to order a wide variety of flowers at almost any time of year, not all flowers are grown equally.

Through an unintended consequence of the Andean Trade Preference Agreement (ATPA) of 1991, the United

States lost many local flower farms, which were replaced by an influx of readily available, cheap and duty-free cut flowers. More than 80% of flowers purchased in the United States today are imported – most commonly from Colombia and Ecuador – and are often grown in greenhouses that use harsh chemicals and pesticides. And although these readily available flowers may cost less, there’s a good chance their quality and vase life will be, too.

Enter field-to-event wedding florals. Part of the “slow flower” movement – a term coined by Seattle-based writer and American Grown Flowers advocate Debra Prinzing – this niche market of wedding florals focuses on blooms grown using sustainable growing practices, harvested during their

natural bloom time and sourced as close to your wedding location as possible.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but my wedding florist’s suggestion to consider working with seasonal flowers would come full circle a decade later when my husband and I – now equipped with more knowledge of flowers than that earlier version of me ever would have imagined – planted the first seeds of our specialty cut flower farm, OneEighty Petals in Fish Creek.

“Specialty Cut Flowers,” by definition, are almost any variety that can be cut and placed in a vase or used in a floral arrangement outside of the three most common florist crops: carnations, roses and chrysanthemums. Specialty cut flowers tend to not ship well, but are popular in design work and thrive

Peonies

Peonies are one of the most requested owers for weddings, and who can blame couples? Peonies’ so and romantic petal structure and romantic array of colors make them irresistible. However, if you’re getting married outside of their May-to-June harvesting window, they may be a struggle – and more expensive – to nd.

Consider instead: ranunculus and dahlias

Roses

There’s no denying the beauty of a rose, but why not consider something a little less, well, obvious? For owers that look like roses but add a more unusual element to your bouquet, think about some elegant alternatives.

Consider instead: lisianthus, ranunculus, double tulips

Baby’s Breath

Thanks to its versatility, baby’s breath is one of the most common llers. But this ower is also packed with plenty of allergy-inducing pollen. Using a seasonal alternative can add that light and airy texture to arrangements with a pop of panache.

Consider instead: yarrow, statice, feverfew, dara

in the ower eld – dahlias, peonies, lisianthus, sun owers and zinnias among them. This mix also includes specialty cut grasses, foliage, and woody sticks and branches, including willow.

Each spring, we carefully plan and plant a quarter acre of these blooms to be used in wedding design, sold by direct retail from our farm as well as supply a number of weekly wholesale orders to other local orists. The process runs from mid-May through September, and we tend to harvest and design from what we have planted in the eld.

Though time and labor intensive, this hyper-local approach to wedding owers comes with a variety of perks for both the local oral industry and couples. Part of the job of a eld-to-event grower and designer is to educate couples about their owers and the bene ts of choosing local.

Because we design using what we grow, we like to tell our customers that they get the bonus of being able to follow the journey of their wedding owers from seed to bouquet. If they’re in the area, they can even visit the farm to see the owers we’ll be harvesting for them growing in the eld.

But there’s more to it than that. Whether you decide to work directly with a eld-to-event designer or a traditional orist who purchases owers from nearby growers, here are ve reasons to consider locally grown, seasonal owers for your wedding.

They are unique.

When you choose local owers, you’ll be using owers that are representative of that speci c locale and time in the season, which gives your wedding a customized and distinctive look. Because these varieties tend to not ship well, they are typically not as available to the general consumer and are o en available only locally, giving them a sense of exclusive air.

They are fresh.

When working with a local grower or eld-to-event designer, blooms are harvested within days (generally two or three) before your event. Imported blooms may be harvested a week – or

even more – before they make their way into your hands.

They are responsibly grown.

From natural weed management, to integrated pest-management systems, to the use of cover crops for better soil, most ower farms employ sustainable growing techniques that give back to the land in positive ways.

They help stimulate the local economy.

Just like choosing local for your other wedding needs, purchasing owers from your local grower or a orist who supports local growers keeps money in the local economy.

They are better for the environment.

Local owers require less transport, reducing the overall carbon footprint.

They also likely contain few, if any, harmful chemicals. In order to travel thousands of miles, conventionally sourced owers are preserved with harsh chemicals (o en banned in the United States) to prolong their life out of water during shipment.

Knowing where your blooms come from and choosing local for some or all of your wedding- ower needs can help your special day stand out from the crowd – and do good, too.

A Door County Wedding with an International Twist

ne of the appeals of hosting your wedding in Door County is the opportunity to share the area with friends and family. That’s exactly what brought Meghan Sargent and Ralfi Doka together on the idea of saying “I do” on the peninsula.

In addition to checking off items on their wedding wish list, such as a charming and intimate environment, Door County offered something out of the ordinary. And with a significant portion of the guest list visiting from another country, an unusual location was a definite plus.

“We wanted something different because Doka’s family was flying in from Albania,” Sargent said.

For Sargent, being wed in Door County brought back fond memories of summers working at Wilson’s in Ephraim. When she later introduced Doka to the peninsula, “he embraced it with the same love,” she said. It was the perfect way to give their guests not only a party, but also a memorable vacation.

“[The area] provides not just an experience for you as the bride and groom, but for all your guests,” Sargent said. “So many of our guests had never

been to Door County before – especially the families from overseas.”

Together, with help from their wedding planner, the couple set out to create a Door County weekend with an international twist. The couple chose Northern Haus in Sister Bay as the backdrop for the day.

“It brought all the things we wanted in a venue,” Sargent said.

She wanted something stylish with an open-concept layout, but not something where they would feel lost in the space. Meanwhile, Doka sought a modern,

sleek environment with plenty of room for dancing.

The couple invited 200 guests, with the expectation that 120-140 would attend.

“We wanted a party, but still wanted to capture an intimate setting," Sargent said. Northern Haus captured all the qualities they were seeking for their big day.

With the venue selected, the details of the day blended Door County hospitality and treasured traditions. Doka said some of the most cherished memories he has with loved ones are four-hourlong dinners lled with laughter and

dancing to traditional Albanian music, which inspired a day infused with family and traditions.

One of the Albanian traditions the couple included was the burning of the napkin, which represented Doka burning away his bachelor life. The couple also included the tradition of throwing money, during which guests shower the couple with dollar bills, symbolizing prosperity and happiness in their new life together. The evening included plenty of traditional folk dances as well, complete with Doka’s parents donning traditional Albanian dress for the dances.

On the American side, the couple chose to include the traditions of having Sargent’s father walk her down the aisle and having a father-daughter dance during the reception.

Sargent and Doka recall one of the more memorable moments of the evening as they watched both families come together during an Albanian folk song. At the end of the day, Sargent and Doka had not only combined their lives, but also their families and all the customs and traditions they brought with them.

Said Sargent, “Our wedding was unique in that we had two cultures merging into one.”

Tuxedo with a Twist

The tuxedo is a classic wedding look. With its sleek design and satin trim, the

tux embodies timeless sophistication and elegance. But depending on your personal wedding style and destination location, the standard black tuxedo might be a bit over the top.

If you love the polished vibe of a tuxedo but want to tone down the formality, consider choosing one in a blue, gray or tan hue. The main di erence between a tuxedo and a suit is the presence of satin on the lapels, buttons, trim and trousers, and by trading in dramatic black for shades of deep navy, charcoal gray or classic tan, you’ll have a look that’s upscale enough to set you apart but doesn’t make you look out of place.

When the setting of your vows calls for something less formal, a perfectly

tailored suit in dapper blue tones paired with a white shirt and a beige or “greige” tie will do the trick.

As for the rest of your crew, traditionally groomsmen wear the same as the groom, don something similar or perhaps wear the reverse: beige/ greige suits with a white shirt and blue tie.

Keep It Local

Part of the fun of a destination wedding is bringing some of the local avor into the details, including your attire. Take the opportunity to accessorize your look with something that symbolizes the location or region.

Incorporate sea glass or dri wood into the boutonniere for a waterfront celebration, or stop by a local jewelry store to treat yourself to a pair of cu inks or a tie clip to commemorate the occasion.

Precious Cargo

Just because fabrics such as linen and cotton could withstand being smashed into a suitcase, it doesn’t mean they should. Do yourself and your weddingday ensemble a favor by packing it in a separate garment bag, away from the rest of your clothes and belongings. You’ll appreciate the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re avoiding any suitcase spills or other luggage disasters.

If you or anyone in your wedding party is ying to your wedding destination, make friends with the ight attendants. They can point you to closets within the plane where you may be able to hang your suit neatly and safely.

Raise a Glass to the Local Bar-Service Team

Although every vendor plays an important role in making your wedding day a success, none may be more important to setting the tone of the event – and keeping it going – than the bar service. Not only is this crew responsible for keeping glasses filled throughout the evening, but it also helps to create a VIP atmosphere for your guests. And in Door County, where the bar-service crews are often made up of locals, they even provide a few added perks.

“Usually, the bride or groom has an established connection up here, but for a lot of the guests, they’ve never visited before,” said Jon Sattler, who bartends for Door County Event Planners. “Where should they go to breakfast? What things are there to do? These are questions we get being local.”

Part bartender, part concierge, they’re happy to share, whether guests are wondering which breweries and wineries they should tour the next day or seeking to determine the best places to visit with and without the kids.

“It’s nice to have a local bartender here for that kind of stuff,” said Adrian Murre, who has bartended for several planners and venues on the peninsula, including Door County Event Planners and Garden Gables. “It’s nice to be able to be that person to welcome them to the county and share a little bit of knowledge about the area. And who better to help them than someone who lives here?”

But there is another element that makes these bartenders top shelf.

Part of the fun of having bar service at your wedding is the opportunity it creates for conversation among guests. So as you wait for your drink, take a moment to get to know those around you.

“We all know each other,” Murre said. “Being there is as much fun for us as anyone else. And if your bartender is having a good time, everyone else is, too.”

Although good chemistry among bartenders makes for a good time at the bar, it can also be a helpful planning tool. Want to know more about a particular vendor in the area? Just ask a bartender.

“Everyone who works within the industry up here, we all know each

other and work so well together,” said Alex Cole, beverage specialist for Door County Event Planners.

It’s not uncommon, Cole said, for her team to work multiple weddings in a row with the same vendors. Not only does it make it fun to see familiar faces, but it also creates a synergy that leads to awless events.

“There are so many amazing vendors in Door County who know the area and the venues,” Cole said.

Murre agreed, noting the many bene ts of choosing local service suppliers.

“Where I see things fail or miscommunication happen is when vendors don’t know the area,” Murre said. “There is also a level of service that comes from choosing someone from within the county because of the level of dedication to the service industry here. Door County has, bar none, someone to provide every service you need.”
