Summer Music Preview 2019

Every year

the Pulse brings you the Summer Music Preview (SMP), a guide that covers all things live music in the county. The SMP includes a pull-out calendar, weekly music lists, venues, live-music features and more. People have different markers for the start of the summer season, but for me, the completion of the SMP marks the start of the busy season in Door County.

I have been working on the SMP since 2014: my first year at the Pulse. My job has been to help whoever led the project by collecting schedules, inputting information and anything else that was helpful. Admittedly, the SMP became very formulaic – lather, rinse, repeat. It is typically a busy time of year in the office, and with a small staff, we have to make do with what we have. This year, however, was different. While still considered small compared to many workplaces, we have added some new faces and talents since our last SMP, and with them comes the freedom to explore ways to bring back some of the charm of the earliest versions of the SMP. When our team sat down to discuss this year’s issue, we focused on figuring out new ways in which the community could interact

with the information we provide. What could we do to make a newspaper more interactive? While flipping through the pages, you may notice a few changes: a shorter venue list, some new content, more photos and a new format for the performances page. Although these small changes are not the most dramatic, we wanted to create more space to add back in some of the fun content that was in older versions of the SMP, giving this year’s edition a touch of nostalgia. Most notable as new this year is the addition of our Live Music Preview weekly email. If you misplace your pull-out calendar or can’t take it with you everywhere, sign up for our new, weekly update on all things live music. We will be including which gigs to check out during the week, videos, podcast interviews, a calendar of music and more. It’s like getting a mini SMP delivered to your email in-box every week! As always, we hope you enjoy our Summer Music Preview and find it useful to create a rockin’ summer filled with live music for the whole family. Hiroya Tsukamoto

Prepare to be wowed by the talents of guitarist and songwriter Hiroya Tsukamoto, originally from Kyoto, Japan. He began playing the five-string banjo at age 13, followed shortly by the guitar. He earned a scholarship to Boston’s Berklee College of Music in 2000 and took second place in the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in 2018. Don’t be fooled by the delicate nature of his playing. Tsukamoto’s songs have an internal energy that breaks through the lilting guitar sounds to create a peaceful, vibrant tone. His music is described as “… an innovative, impressionistic journey filled with earthy, organic soundscapes that impart a mood of peace and tranquility.” Tsukamoto will perform June 8 at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center on Washington Island.

Brulé

Brulé is a five-piece ensemble that combines traditional Native American instruments and rock with the steps of one of the top Native American dance troupes to create a fully immersive experience and multidimensional art form that’s also an exploration of culture. Paul LaRoche founded the group, which has been active since 1995. His personal story of growing up in a small Minnesota farming town with an adopted, white, middle-class family – and learning about his heritage later in life – is mirrored in his musical journey as he uses music to bring these two cultures together. The group has alsp launched 7th Direction, an innovative charity organization whose mission is to bring hope, pride and inspiration to Native American youth through the performing arts. Brulé will perform June 16 as part of the Peg Egan Sunset Concert Series.

Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers

Get ready to dance when Joe Herlter & The Rainbow Seekers take the stage at Door County Brewing Co. Taproom and Music Hall on June 22. The six-member group, led by lead singer Joe Hertler, takes the audience on a ride “… across the mountains of Motown, through the fjords of folk, over the archipelagos of Americana and – at last – into a funky firth, where only the fiercest of friendships can be found.” The laid-back and easy-going vibes of the group’s recordings are not indicative of their high-energy live performances, which the band says are its purpose, and that playing music is a symbiotic process that relies on the crowd’s energy. The members never take a break. Even when they aren’t playing, they bound across the stage and dance along with the music. Their newest album, Paper Castle, was released on May 31.

JC Brooks Band

Front man JC Brooks and his band will immediately engulf you in their up-tempo, groovy funk; lead vocals reminiscent of Marvin Gaye and Prince will leave you hanging on every lyric. The six-member group evokes plenty of soul that reverberates in contemporary fashion, so don’t miss the performance June 26 as part of the Sister Bay Concerts in the Park series. Expect a full show of enthusiastic rhythms and charismatic energy, and don’t expect to sit for the duration: this is a band that gets you to stand and sway, twist and move. Listen to the latest album, Neon Jungle, for elements of the group’s ’70s and ’80s style with a modern approach. Two new singles released in 2018, “Better Class of Thieves” and “Anywhere but America,” touch on political and social themes in modern-day America.

Sneezy

The chemistry of the fusion rock band Sneezy is no happy accident: the six members of this Chicago group have been playing together since their elementary years. With every performance, you can feel the energy and enthusiasm that only old comrades and partners in crime can ignite. The band has built a following around Illinois and is now gathering a base in Door County, where it set the stage for a funky time at the 2018 Fall Fest and has plugged in performances this summer at Husby’s Garage, including one on July 3. Sneezy’s tunes use rock, hip-hop and soul influences that play out on the guitar, bass, harmonica, drums, keys and saxophone. Audiences should take their groove to the dance floor, let the beat drive their feet and get carried away in the hypnotic harmonies.

Stas Venglevski and Misha Litvin

Stanislav “Stas” Venglevski, a native of the Republic of Moldova, stuns audiences worldwide with his talents on the bayan – a chromatic button accordion. He’s also a composer and arranger and performs in musical genres including classical, contemporary and ethnic. Complementing the sounds of the bayan will be master mandolinist Misha Litvin, a native of Minsk Belarus, who has performed with and directed multiple music venues in Europe. The combination of these lively instruments will have you dancing in your seat July 14 at Fishstock.

Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers

Taking a new approach to old-time country, the Sapsuckers will have you daydreaming of a refreshing lemonade on a hot, summer day. The duo has formed a solid following in the Midwest, and the Wisconsin Area Music Industry

Association nominated the group for Best Country Band in Wisconsin. The combination of guitar, mandolin, fiddle and enchanting harmonies hearken back to the days of old and create a sense of nostalgia. Audiences gush over the tight harmonies, charm, humor and the ability to turn something old into something new. You can gush, too, July 19 at Woodwalk Gallery.

Squirrel Nut Zippers

The sound of the Squirrel Nut Zippers is not easily categorized: it sits at some cross section of swing, jazz, Delta blues and klezmer, incorporating folk, punk and other-worldly sounds to add an air of mystery. Born in the early ’90s in North Carolina, the band rose to fame during the swing revival later that decade before breaking for a hiatus. Now the band has regrouped and released a new album called Beasts of Burgundy, named after the famous street in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The 12 new tracks embrace the Zippers’ original influences and find new fodder from the Big Easy: pirate lore, carnival culture and a healthy disregard for convention. The Squirrel Nut Zippers will bring their joyful racket and boogey-inspiring sound to the Door Community Auditorium on August 11.

The Squeezettes

This five-piece Milwaukee group is squashing traditional notions of polka by playing anything from waltz to pop to rock and calling it power-polka. The Squeezettes feature “ex-burlesquechanteuse-turned-old-school-torchsinger Chanel le Meaux; Pamela (Big Surprise) Scesniak and Linda (Tiny Bubbles) Mueller squeezing big, beautiful Baldoni accordions; Mike Chaltry on ‘freerange’ tuba; and Mike (Animal) Eells on vocals and pickle bucket,” according to the group’s bio.

The Squeezettes are four-time Wisconsin Area Music Industry award winners for Best Polka Artist, and for good reason: watch their videos on YouTube, and you’ll wish you were at a festival with a pint in hand. Good thing they’ll be at the Algoma Summer Concerts in the Park Series July 18.

Stolié

Stolié is a singer-songwriter and looppedal artist who hails from Chicago. She’s been a full-time musician since 2007, touring in the United States and Canada during the summer, and living and singing in Mexico during the winter. Stolié has played all kinds of venues for all kinds of people: she fits in wherever she goes. She has more than a dozen original albums and a cover catalogue of 500plus songs, including tunes for children (performing as Super Stolié), and she’s able to create full arrangements on the fly by layering beats and harmonies on her looping system. Her summer tour includes a stop at Washington Island’s Fiddler’s Green on July 24.

Laura Lou

Folk rock bangers: That’s singersongwriter Laura Lou from Minneapolis. She began her music career with her EP “Seduction Lullaby” in 2014 and released her first full-length album in spring 2018. She’s known for her full voice and songs that focus on “being authentic, present and timeless.” Laura Lou’s sound ranges from fast-paced rock songs to slow, acoustic jams. According to Kelsey Simpkins of the Aural Premonition, “The best parts about seeing Laura Lou live, however, are her frank and comedic comments between songs with Shaheen … and her mom whistling proudly somewhere off stage.” She’s also part of a duo called The Twins of Franklin, which plays original indie folk songs. She’ll bring her solo work to Stabbur on August 31.

Steel Bridge

June 14 and 15 Regulars of the Steel Bridge Songfest will notice a few changes to this year’s festival: it’s shorter than in previous years, and the group has decided to focus on rebranding its nonprofit, Citizens of Our Bridge, to go forward as the new Steel Bridge Creative Foundation. Although changes are being made, that doesn’t mean the Steel Bridge Songfest won’t host great music during its two-day run. This year, performances will be held exclusively at Third Avenue Playhouse, where the shows will showcase the new works penned by musicians during the five-day Construction Zone Collaborative. Tickets also include admission to afterparties, whose locations have yet to be announced.

Burning Cow

July 18-20 Get ready to rock out at Wisconsin’s premier music and camping experience. Enjoy all of the activities Door County has to offer during the day, then return to the 40-acre plot of land in Sturgeon Bay for a night of great live music. The lineup so far includes Davy Knowles, Left Lane Cruiser, Rebel Soul Revival, Josh Hoyer and Soul Colossal, The Hooten Hallers, and The Dirty Martinis. True to its name, the three-day festival will end when a 30-foot cow statue

is set ablaze. The cow is a symbol of Wisconsin culture, and it represents the temporal nature of the festival. Visit burningcowfestival.com for details about festival passes and camping options.

Fiddle Fest

August 3 Trek up to Washington Island for this annual festival featuring food, libations, prizes and foot-stomping live music from the festival’s star, the fiddle. Galynne & Markondrums and The Original Delta Jets will perform, and more artists will be announced later. Keep up with Fiddle Fest news at washingtonislandfiddlersgreen. com.

Blues on the Bay

August 24 Attending Door County’s only blues festival, Blues on the Bay, is a great way to wrap up a summer of live music. Based at the Ellison Bay Community Park, the festival boasts local and visiting artists. Previous headliners have included Mike Zito, Billy Flynn, Mike Wheeler, and the talents of local musicians Cathy Grier, Dirty Deuce, and PT and the Cruisers. Take a blanket or chair, and settle in for a fine night of fine blues. The festival is free, but donations are encouraged to raise money for Door County Secret Santa.

Midsummer’s Music

Throughout Door County midsummersmusic.com Founded by Jim and Jean Berkenstock, Midsummer’s Music has been bringing chamber music to Door County for more than three decades. This series of 40 concerts covers various themes at an array of locations around the peninsula, and the organization also collaborates with local restaurants, galleries and Write On, Door County to add extra elements to the performances – artwork and poetry inspired by the music, and special dinner/tasting concerts. Midsummer’s Music’s 2019 program includes Mendelssohn Bravura; Quintessential Quintets: Mozart & Brahms; Three Magical Years in the Lives of Clara, Robert and Felix; Prescient Youth; Czech and Triple Czech; Baroque Brilliance; The Piano Virtuoso as Composer; Profound Piano Quartets; and Mendelssohn Octet. Midsummer’s Music added a resident string quartet, Griffon Quartet, last year, and it now performs throughout the county, including performances for students to promote music education among youth and children. Ticket prices vary.

Peninsula Music Festival

Door Community Auditorium, 3926 Hwy 42, Fish Creek musicfestival.com What started out as performances in the Gibraltar gym in 1953 are now performances in the Door Community Auditorium to hundreds of attendees. The Peninsula Music Festival has grown from a chamber orchestra to a full symphony of 64 members, directed by Victor Yampolsky, who will retire after the end of the 2019 season. Concerts have various themes that highlight the works of composers from around the world, and they showcase featured performers and guest conductors throughout the season. The 2019 festival includes the seasonopening concert on Aug. 6, Dvořák Mini-Festival I on Aug. 8, American Greats on Aug. 10, Baroque and Beyond on Aug. 13, Dvořák Mini-Festival II on Aug. 15, An Evening of Choral Music on Aug. 17, On the Danube on Aug. 20, Dvořák Mini-Festival III on Aug. 22 and the festival finale on Aug. 24. Washington Island Music Festival

Check schedules on websites for specific dates, times and locations, and please see the calendar in the Pulse’s weekly print edition to learn about more performance offerings.

Trueblood Performing Arts Center, 870 Main Road, Washington Island washingtonislandmusicfestival.com The idea for the Washington Island Music Festival goes back to 1990. From performing five concerts in a week, the festival has added complementary lectures. Starting in 2003, it became the sole supporter and provider of music education at the Washington Island School, and it offers a music camp for children ages 6-12, who rehearse songs before performing during the festival. The 2019 concerts include Island Delight on July 29, Czech It Out on Aug. 1, Sweet Sunday on Aug. 4, Children’s Concert on Aug. 7 and the Friday Finale on Aug. 9. The accompanying lectures are “Inside the Notes,” with violinist Samantha George on July 31 and Aug. 2; “Piano 2,” with Peter Nehlsen on Aug. 6; and “Inside the Notes,” with oboist and educator Meaghan Heinrich on Aug. 8. Unless noted, most events are held in the Trueblood PAC.

oncert performances are a large and lovely part of the live-music scene in Door County. Although attending orchestra and ensemble performances may not be your typical activity, we encourage everyone to check out one of these great performances around the county. If you’re attending a more formal concert for the first time, however, it can be a little intimidating if you aren’t familiar with the etiquette. Here are some guidelines to follow so that you can attend concerts with confidence. NO TALKING DURING THE PIECE Unlike listening to bands in bars – which often includes talking to other bar-goers and singing along to the songs – this is a quiet-audience environment. Aside from it being common courtesy not to talk (or whisper or rustle candy or cough-drop wrappers), you may start to talk during a silence that’s built into the piece or during the silence between movements (parts of a longer work) before the piece is actually over. It’s safe to speak only during applause, and if you can hold your coughs until there’s applause, that’s best, too. KNOW WHEN TO CLAP This is probably one of the most confusing aspects of concert performances. Unlike songs that have an obvious start and end, classical pieces often consist of multiple movements. Typically, the conductor takes a short pause between movements, but don’t applaud because the piece is not over.

An easy way to make the distinction between the end of a movement and the end of the entire piece is to watch whether the conductor puts down the baton (the stick used to direct the ensemble). At the start of each piece, the baton goes up – and stays up – until the entire piece is finished. It’s also a good idea to look through the program before the performance begins so you’re familiar with the flow of the concert. The program lists each piece and each individual movement within each piece. You can count the silences between movements to determine how many movements have passed until the whole piece is finished. If you lose track of the movements or are in doubt, just wait to see whether the audience begins to applaud. You don’t need to start the applause. TURN OFF CELL PHONES This is another thing you don’t have to worry about in some other live-music settings. When sitting down to enjoy a classical concert, however, turning your phone off completely is the best option because shifting it to silent may still generate a noise if you have alarms or notifications set. And turn it off right away when you arrive so that you don’t forget; there may not be a reminder before the concert starts. If you do choose to keep your phone on to take photos, make sure the flash is turned off, and be very discreet when snapping the shots. REMAIN SEATED If you must get up during a performance, wait until the piece is completely finished and the audience is applauding. Don’t re-enter the performance space until the next round of applause.

Live Music + Bar Etiquette by CELESTE BENZSCHAWEL celeste@ppulse.com

W

hen it comes to behavior at a bar, most of it goes without saying. Bars that host live music have the same expectations, and then some. It’s all about reading the situation and behaving accordingly. Speaking from personal experience as both an attendee and a musician, I’ve found there are a few things to keep in mind when enjoying live music at a bar or festival. YELLING “FREE BIRD” ISN’T ACTUALLY FUNNY This signature Lynyrd Skynyrd song never fails to be requested of any cover band, ever. There’s always a jokester in the crowd who thinks it’s the first time anyone’s ever heard it. I don’t think anyone has ever been granted this request, so I will provide enthusiastic applause to whoever can pull it off. WHOSE BIRTHDAY IS IT? I might sound like an old grump when I say this (even though I’m a nicely seasoned 23), but it’s a little irritating when some drunk woman comes up to the band in between songs and asks the group to sing “Happy Birthday” to her even more intoxicated friend. Chances are that people in the crowd would rather just move on with the show. If you must make this request, I recommend asking the band ahead of time so they have a moment to prepare. WAIT UNTIL THE SONG IS FINISHED Don’t approach the band until the song is completely over, even if you’re approaching to give praise. Sure, musicians tend to be great at multitasking, but what they’re doing requires focus. Even the slightest interruption is bound to mess up the flow of a song. THERE’S A STAGE FOR A REASON On a similar note, do not enter the band’s personal space. Whether it’s a literal stage or a figurative stage, it’s there to separate the performer from the listener. I once had a stranger try to share the mic with me in the middle of a song. As if that wasn’t uncomfortable enough, the person began dancing dangerously close for the remainder of the song. I wouldn’t want to be in that situation whether I was holding an instrument or not. It might be funny to your friends, but it’s probably just embarrassing for the rest of us. DO TIP THE BAND You never know if the musicians are playing solely for tips or if music is their full-time job. Regardless, tipping the band is always a nice thing to do. These talented people have put in many hours of practice and hauled all of their equipment to the venue, and they work hard to put on a good performance. DO TIP THE BARTENDERS Like any other night at the bar, tip your bartenders. Live music shows can bring in large crowds, so they’re working extra hard to make it a good night for everyone. DO SING ALONG, CLAP AND DANCE If you’re having a good time, don’t be afraid to show it! Most bands work off the crowd’s energy and love to see feedback. If you’re too afraid to dance because you’re the first one, throw back the rest of that beer, grab a friend and hit the dance floor. Chances are you’ll encourage others to follow suit. These are the shows that are the most memorable for you and the band, so make it one to remember!
